B Andrea Lankford quit her job after spending 12 years as a National Park Service forester specializing in search and rescue missions in scenic and remote American landscapes. However, decades later, three young hikers went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them. Trail of the Lost was her answer. It’s an absorbing nonfiction narrative (叙事) about the three hikers, including their lives and those of the people looking for them. It also explores the history of the PCT and the rich subculture, practices and even literature that surround it and those who undertake the 2,650-mile journey. The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers. Lankford offers a biography (传记) of each of the missing men and shows them through the eyes of those who knew them well and those who joined the search. Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the stories of everyone looking for them. Lankford played a role in each search but she allowed friends, family and even strangers to occupy center stage throughout most of the narrative. The story looks at the role of missing person Facebook groups in the searches and how crucial word of mouth can be. Many warm-hearted individuals came forth and became instrumental in the searches or provided valuable information. But Lankford also writes of the many who lied for no apparent reason and confused the investigations. The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT. Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail, knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding. Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don’t observe the PCT’s unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or ignored dangers of the PCT. Written with a clear, fast-paced, straightforward style, Trail of the Lost is as full of hope and humanity as it is packed with pain, sorrow, danger and tension. Read it and you’ll find more than you seek. 24.What led Lankford to write Trail of the Lost? A.Her love for her prior career. B.Her strong attachment to the PCT. C.The stress from the missing families. D.Her investigation into hikers’ disappearance. 25.What is presented on the second level of the book? A.Efforts by different people in searches. B.A string of wilderness survival tips. C.Approaches to information classification. D.Respective stories of the three hikers. 26.What’s the purpose of mentioning Lankford’s previous adventures? A.To promote her book. B.To make her famous. C.To motivate hikers to challenge themselves. D.To stress the difficulty of hiking the PCT. 27.What can we say about the book? A.It targets single youth. B.It’s a romantic novel. C.It’s based on actual events. D.It’s a detailed account of a journey. C AI has advanced significantly over the years. However, its current models largely disregard human psychology, such as emotional intelligence. “The main focus of our work was how we could bring the emotional part of intelligence to AI,” says Saptarshi Das, associate professor at Penn State. “Human behavior is easy to observe but difficult to measure and that makes it difficult to replicate (复制) in a robot and make it emotionally intelligent. There is no real way right now to do that.” Eating habits serve as a prime example of this emotional intelligence. While hunger is the physiological drive to eat, our choices of what to eat are influenced by our sense of taste. As Das explains, even when one is not hungry, the psychological desire can drive him or her to consume a sweet treat, rather than a piece of meat. To grasp the intricacies (错综复杂的细节) of taste, Penn State researchers looked to the human tongue, which translates chemical data into electrical signals sent to the brain’s gustatory cortex (味觉皮层). In this brain region, complex neuronal networks shape our sense of taste. To imitate this, the team created an electronic “tongue”. This technology can be adapted to recognize all primary taste characteristics, from sweet and salty to umami (鲜味). Looking ahead, the researchers see numerous applications, including AI-designed diets based on emotional preferences or tailored restaurant meal suggestions. The team’s immediate goal is to expand the electronic tongue’s capacity. “We are trying to imitate the 10,000 or so taste receptors (味蕾) we have on our tongue that are each slightly different compared to the others, which enables us to distinguish between small differences in tastes,” says Das. “The example I think of is people who train their tongue and become a wine taster. Perhaps in the future, we can have an AI system that you can train to be an even better wine taster.” Beyond taste, the team wants to broaden this concept to other senses, leading to a more comprehensive and emotionally intelligent AI system. 28.What can be learned from the first two paragraphs? A.It is hard to make robots emotionally intelligent. B.It is necessary to make robots emotionally intelligent. C.Emotional intelligence is complex and difficult to observe. D.Few researchers pay attention to emotional intelligence of AI. 29.What might this electronic tongue be applied to in the future? A.Evaluating people’s diet plans. B.Designing a healthier diet plan for people. C.Helping restaurants serve customers better. D.Correcting people’s poor dietary preferences. 30.What is the team’s plan according to the last two paragraphs? A.Bringing all the human senses into the AI system. B.Making the electronic tongue available for everyone. C.Improving people’s taste sensitivity with the electronic tongue. D.Attracting the attention of other researchers to AI’s innovation. 31.What is the text mainly about? A.The future development trend of AI. B.The advantage of the “electronic tongue”. C.The progress in bringing emotional intelligence into AI. D.The big role of AI in developing emotional intelligence. D Earlier studies suggested that fatigue from virtual meetings stems from mental overload, but new research from Aalto University shows that sleepiness during virtual meetings might actually be a result of mental underload and boredom. “I expected to find that people get stressed in remote meetings. But the result was the opposite —— especially those who were not engaged in their work quickly became drowsy during remote meetings, “says Assistant Professor Niina Nurmi, who led the study. The researchers measured heart rate variability during virtual meetings and face-to-face meetings, examining different types of fatigue experiences among 44 knowledge workers across nearly 400 meetings. The team at Aalto collaborated with researchers at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, where stress and recovery are studied using heart rate monitors. “We shadowed each subject for two workdays, recording all events with time stamps, to find out the sources of human physiological responses,”Nurmi says. The study also included a questionnaire to identify people’s general attitude and work engagement. ”The format of a meeting had little effect on people who were highly engaged and enthusiastic about their work. They were able to stay active even during virtual meetings. On the other hand, workers whose work engagement was low and who were not very enthusiastic about their work found virtual meetings very tiring. “ It’s easier to maintain focus in face-to-face meetings than virtual ones, as the latter have limited cognitive cues and sensory input. “Especially when cameras are off, the participant is left under-stimulated and may start to compensate by multitasking,” Nurmi explains. Although an appropriate level of stimulation is generally beneficial for the brain, multitasking during virtual meetings is problematic. Only highly automated tasks, such as walking, can be properly carried out during a virtual meeting. “Walking and other automated activities can boost your energy levels and help you to concentrate on the meeting. But if you’re trying to focus on two things that require cognitive attention simultaneously, you can’t hear if something important is happening in the meeting. Alternatively, you have to constantly switch between tasks. It’s really taxing for the brain,”Nurmi says. 32.How does Niina Nurmi feel about the result of the research? A.Confused. B.Confident. C.Surprised. D.Optimistic. 33.What does the underlined word “shadowed ”in paragraph 3 mean? A.Observed. B.Interviewed. C.Employed. D.Analyzed. 34.What can be learned from the last two paragraphs? A.Limited sensory input increases stimulation. B.Turning off cameras boosts task switching. C.Automated tasks stimulate constant switches. D.Too little stimulation can cause multitasking. 35.What is the text mainly about? A.How remote meetings differ from face-to-face ones. B.Why cognitive attention in virtual meetings decreases. C.What role a person’s personality plays in remote meetings. D.Where the problem with the present meeting formats lies. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). 36 Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale. 37 Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. 38 “I used to hate parties and I was distant from my friends.” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition. Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. 39 Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. 40 There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.” A.Songs sound like noise to an amusic. B.Now she knows that she is not alone. C.The notes sound different to an amusic. D.She felt lonely while staying away from others. E.However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. F.Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. G.Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors. 第三部分 语言运用(共五节,满分30分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题1分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I have always enjoyed cold climates and connecting to the environment. They climbed trees, raced toy cars, and sometimes even built the tallest block towers. But this day was special. It was almost Father’s Day! "Hey, guys! We need to do something super special for our daddies!" exclaimed Max, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Like what?" asked Leo, scratching his head. Leo had a big head of curly hair that bounced when he thought. "We should make them a present — something with our own hands!" Max said, waving his arms in the air. "What about a card? A super-duper thank-you card! We can fill it with love!" Sam cheered. And just like that, the boys decided to create the most magical Father’s Day card ever! The next day, the boys gathered in Max's backyard. The sun was shining, the flowers were blooming, and butterflies danced in the air like little fairies. Carefully, they prepared colored paper, markers, glitter, and lots of stickers. The boys spread out all their supplies on the grass. Max started drawing a big, funny face on the front of the card. "Let me add mustaches!" laughed Leo, drawing thick, curly mustaches all over the big face. "And I'll put stickers everywhere!" Sam squealed, sticking shiny stars, hearts, and smiley faces all around. The little guys also decided to write special messages on it to express their love. "Now we need to add something magical. How about we make it sing?" Max said, revealing a tiny music box he found in his toy chest. They carefully opened the card and placed the music box inside. When the card opened, it would play a cheerful tune! With laughter and joy, they finished decorating the card, and it looked bright and magical, just like their daddies.注意: 注意: 1.续写第一段,词数应为90个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 On Father’s Day morning, the boys were bubbling (洋溢) with excitement. _ The boys sat together in Max’s backyard, watching their daddies enjoying their magic cards. _ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
