What started as a simple idea from 13-year-old Lois Agnello has turned into an unforgettable
journey-one that began with a 3D printer and a dream, and will soon take her all the way to Japan.
Lois was born with only part of her left hand, but she never let that stop her.One day,she went
to her science and technology teacher,Mr.Godson, with a great plan:"I wanted to create my own
hand with my friends so I could show them what it's like.
Mr.Godson was impressed by her enthusiasm ()"It really touched a lot of her
classmates,he said.Soon,a group of Year 7 students were spending their lunch breaks learning how

to use the school's 3D printer and testing different materials."Most of them had never used a 3D
printer before,so it was a great challenge,Mr.Godson added.
With the help from an Australian charity that provides free assistive devices, they kept improving
their design. After three months of testing and correcting mistakes, the first working hand was ready. It
moved using upper-arm strength through a plastic wrist. When Lois tried it,she couldn't believe it:
“This is crazy!I didn't even know if it would work!”
But the best part wasn't just the hand-it was making it together with her friends."That was the
best experience,Lois said. Her classmates were proud too.One of them said,"It makes me feel
really good that Lois got a hand that works-and it makes me want to build an even better one.
Now,the team has printed three more hands, each better than the last in terms of comfort and
flexibility ()Their story has caught global attention.Later this year, they will represent

Nearly everyone in the world has heard of the Olympic Games, and many people are familiar with
the Paralympic Games, but very few know about the equally important Transplant Games.Held every
year, these games celebrate the courage of transplant recipients (and the selflessness of
donors'families.
According to a news release from the Sheffield City Council, the games-which the city will host
in the summer of 2026-are the main event for the Transplant Active charity, which aims to raise
awareness of organ (donation and inspire recipients to stay healthy and active.
A blog on Westfield Health's website explains that over 7,000 people in Britain are waiting for
organ transplants now.On average, about three people die every day while waiting, but one donor can
save more than nine lives.
The lack of donors still exists even though Britain introduced an "opt-out"organ donation law

families that decide whether to donate their loved ones'organs, and many people never talk with their
families about their wishes.

that recipients can live happy, full lives.Anyone healthy who attends at least one team training camp

race,the 25-meter sprint,and the ball throw.Another participant,who received a kidney at age 13
and is now 36,trains for the Games every year.

breathe again, she was back on a bike, training for the Games. She told Positive News,"Why do I do

Long before cities, farming,or written records,Ice Age humans carved small lines and dots into
ivory (and bone.At first look, these marks seem simple. But new research suggests they may be
one of the earliest steps toward written language.
For years, historians have believed writing began in ancient Mesopotamia around 5,300 years ago.
There, early symbols helped record goods and trade. However,a new study suggests that the roots of
writing go much deeper-more than 30,000 years.
The study looks at 40,000-year-old Ice Age symbols carved into bone, stone, and ivory.Instead of
seeing them as just decoration, researchers asked a different question:Do these marks follow a pattern?
Scientists found the carvings in caves in southwestern Germany. The objects include animal
figures, stone pieces, and tools dating from 45,000 to 34,000 years ago. Many carry repeated dots,
short lines, crosses, and notches. The research team built a digital database of more than 3,000 signs
from 260 objects. They studied how often symbols appeared and how they were grouped. The results
showed structure. Some signs appear more often than others, and some come in regular orders. The
arrangements show purpose,not random action.
To understand what that structure means, the researchers compared the carvings to early writing
boards from Mesopotamia. They measured the statistical complexity of each system-that is,how much
predictable information a symbol system carries. The Ice Age symbols showed levels of order similar to
those early writing systems.
One detail stood out.Animal figures often show more complex symbol patterns than tools. This
difference suggests the marks may have carried social orritual (meaning.Perhaps they showed
identity.Perhaps they marked ownership,memory,or belief.We cannot read them today.Still,the
patterns suggest that people in those groups understood them. The marks may have worked as shared
visual signals long before alphabets (existed.
These carvings do not form a full writing system. But they do show repeated,rule-based
combinations. That kind of shared structure forms the backbone of written communication.

Music and Its Role in Human Life
Music is one of the most universal forms of human expression. From ancient songs to modern pop,
it has been an important part of every culture around the world. But why does music play such an
important role in our daily lives?36
One reason is that music helps us deal with our emotions in a healthy way. When people feel
happy, sad,or angry, they often listen to music that matches or changes how they feel.37 A
sad song can bring comfort during difficult times, while an upbeat song can make us feel energetic and
hopeful again.Sometimes, when we cannot find the right words, music speaks for us instead.
Music can bring people together.Think of concerts, festivals,or singing with friends.38
These shared moments create a feeling of belonging.Scientists have found that making music in a group
releases chemicals in our brains that increase trust and teamwork.Even strangers can become friends
through a shared love of a song.
高一英语A第8页(共12页)
39 Studies show that children who learn an instrument often do better in subjects like
math and language.Music training improves memory, attention, and problem-solving.For adults,
listening to music while working can help them focus and even make boring tasks more enjoyable.
However, not everyone reacts to music in the same way.Personal taste, cultural background, and
past experiences all affect how we feel about a piece of music.40 Some people find energy in
rock, while others prefer the calm of classical music. But one thing is clear:music will always be an
important part of human life.
A.Music is also good for the brain.
B.Music can be a way to celebrate.
C.The answer lies in its effects on us.
D.Different people like different music.
E.You don't need special skills to enjoy music.
F.These activities connect people in a special way.
G.Music helps us say what we cannot put into words.

Previous studies have shown that too much blue light from screens before bedtime can disturb the brain's
internal clock, which then affects sleep length and quality.
New research from the Netherlands finds that if teenagers cut down on evening use of phones and computers,
their sleep quality will get better in just 7 days. They will also feel less tired and be able to focus better. On
average, teens who spend over 4 hours on screens daily go to bed and wake up 30 minutes later than those with less
than 1 hour of screen time.
The research team tested 25 heavy screen users in two ways:wearing blue-light-blocking glasses or avoiding
screens at night. After a week, both ways helped the teens fall asleep and wake up 20 minutes earlier, and their
sleep loss signs were reduced. The study was carried out by three Dutch research organizations.
Most experts praised the research, but they also said more studies are needed to confirm the results.
