Some people avoid making small talk at work. They don’t think they should talk about things that aren’t important for the job, or their partners won’t think they are serious about their work. And some people just don’t enjoy making small talk about themselves.
▲ Knowing how to make proper small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you’re friendly and interested in your partners. You can become a better team member. If you don’t make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you’re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the USA said, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers.”
Here are some tips for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs, and famous people. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don’t share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too, but avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at making small talk!

In winter there is only about three hours of sunlight a day, so local (当地的) people have very little time to go outdoors and socialize (社交). Also, Swedish people are famous for being quite shy and will try not to talk to strangers. So it’s easy for people there to feel lonely.
This is especially common among young people. Recent research on the young people who are aged 16-29 in Luleå found that almost half of them experienced problems because of loneliness.
To solve the problem, the city has started a campaign (运动) called “säg hej”, which means “say hello” in Swedish. It encourages local people to say hello to each other. Besides, the city will also hold many kinds of activities for people to take part in. “Saying hello to others is a small thing, but it makes people feel comfortable and safe. It’s something we can all do to create a more enjoyable Luleå,” the campaign’s website said. “Of course, it’s not the solution (解决办法) to every problem, but a hello can make a big difference,” a city worker said.
The city hopes that a simple hello can help make people feel less lonely. Besides it also hopes that saying hello will lead to a friendlier, safer and closer place, which might also encourage more people to move there, including those from other countries.

If you like poems (诗), the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, US is a good place for you. There is a night table in the middle of the park. A note on it reads, “Take a poem; leave a poem.”
Amanda Barrows, a 31-year-old park ranger (管理员), came up with the idea. She said, “I never thought visitors would love the idea. They left over 100 handwritten poems on the night table in months.”
Three years ago, Barrows began writing poems. She attended a poetry class to keep herself writing. The class asked students to find a way to bring poems into communities. “Why not bring poetry to the city park where I work?” Barrows thought.
Barrows started her work. A friend of hers provided her with an old night table. Then Barrows filled the drawer (抽屉) at the top with fresh paper and pens and added a box at the bottom for poems. Then she asked her close friends to help her fill the drawer with their favorite poems for people to take. Finally, she put her idea into practice.
Barrows planned to leave the night table in one park for four days before moving it to a new one. “I wanted more people to join in the project,” Barrows said.

【答案】例文
How can we become good English readers?
As middle school students, we are required to read as many as 150,000 English words in and outside class. Reading is important because it helps improve vocabulary, grammar, and thinking skills. It also opens a window to the world, allowing us to learn about different cultures.
I usually read English books and articles that match my level. I underline new words and check their meanings. Sometimes, I read aloud to practice pronunciation.
My advice is to choose interesting materials first, such as stories or news. Set small goals, like reading 10 pages a day. Don’t be afraid of difficult words—guess their meanings first, then check a dictionary. Most importantly, enjoy reading!
With practice, everyone can become a good English reader.
