I've been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year.I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work.I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time,I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We,together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions she felt.We knew we could arrange something,so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is nonclinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor's surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It's great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a resolution for people who come in.It's good to have the team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
4.What can we infer about the author?
A.He is a retired doctor.
B.He is volunteering in a hospital.
C.He is a counselor in cancer.
D.He has fought against cancer before.
5.Why did the lady feel upset?
A.Because she was affected by cancer.
B.Because her husband suffered from cancer.
C.Because she didn't know how to treat cancer.
D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
6.What do we know about the volunteers?
A.They do well in teamwork.
B.They receive medical training.
C.They all used to be helped.
D.They often meet unusual things.
7.Why does the author write this text?
A.To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B.To show us how to help those in trouble.
C.To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

A
I was born in 1990—the year of the white horse.A girl born under this zodiac(生肖) is believed to have a wild, steedlike(骏马般的) spirit that will block her fortunes, bringing her family trouble. These beliefs were planted in my mind as a girl growing up in South Korea.I was repeatedly told to fight against my steedlike spirit and instead try being still, gentle, and quiet.
Actually, when I was young,I loved exploring the mountainous trails behind our house, examining the various soil layers in nearby fields, and generally running wild outdoors.I often returned home with soiled clothes.
In high school,I settled on a quiet career choice: I would become a lawyer. However, when I was accepted into a prelaw program,I found the courses boring. That's when a teacher said,“You could always get a science degree, and go back into law.”
I took her advice and landed in the United States to study geology(地质学).Shortly thereafter, though, culture shock set in.I was not ready for the intense physical requirements of my field courses. One 6week summer course required strenuous(费劲的) hikes, camping in extreme heat, and heavy lifting. My cultural upbringing had discouraged such “wild” activities and I had never gone on extended hikes or camps before. But other women in my program were an inspiration.I saw beauty in their strength, and I wanted to be like them.
By the end of my undergraduate degree,I had fully accepted my love of being a tough girl. And I'd given up on the idea of becoming a lawyer. My parents didn't quite know what to make of my adventurous field life. But they were supportive when I told them about the change in my career direction.
I'm now a postdoc with years of experience collecting samples in challenging field environments, and I'm thankful I resisted the cultural expectations placed on me.My wild, steedlike spirit wasn't something to suppress(压制).Instead,it led me to a career that's a perfect fit for me.

D.Her disappointment at the prelaw program courses.
3.What happened to the author when she started to learn geology?
A.She was strongly opposed by her family.
B.She was not interested in the field courses.

D.She was looked down upon by other women.
4.Which of the following best describes the author's parents?
A.Careful. B.Demanding.
C.Farsighted. D.Openminded.
根据第三段的内容和第四段中的“I took her advice and landed in the United States to study geology.”
根据第四段中的“Shortly thereafter, though, culture shock set in.I was not ready for the intense physical requirements of my field courses. One 6week summer course required strenuous hikes, camping in extreme heat, and heavy lifting. My cultural upbringing had discouraged such ‘wild’ activities and I had never gone on extended hikes or camps before.”
根据第五段中的“My parents didn't quite know what to make of my adventurous field life. But they were supportive when I told them about the change in my career direction.(我的父母不知道该如何看待我冒险的野外生活。但当我告诉他们我职业方向的改变时,他们表示支持。)”可知,作者的父母是很开明的。故选D。
B
(2025·四川达州模拟)“I spilled soup all over the table, but it wasn't my fault.”“I got into trouble at school, but it wasn't my fault.” Such statements are often heard.“It's not my fault” is actually a common response for so many people and especially teenagers.Parents complain that they're tired of the “excuses”.
The reason why variations of “it's not my fault” are so popular is that it lets us off the hook from guilt, blame and anger. Those emotions may come from others' reactions or our own selftalk. In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape responsibility and punishment for mistakes.
Some teens would benefit from decreasing their selfblame. Those who blame themselves for things that they can't control tend to be highly selfcritical and are more likely to be anxious.
Many teens overly rely on “it's not my fault”.However, overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of helplessness to control their own lives.Besides,“it's not my fault” focuses a teen's attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done.In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but the approach tends to be ineffective.A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks to find solutions to the drawbacks actively.
People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway.Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively. What does one do if he is pushed into a deep lake? One could certainly stay in water, yelling,“It's not my fault.” However, that is not going to get him out of water. At some point,he needs to swim to shore, regardless of the fault.
Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn't what is “right”,but what is most effective in moving forward.
5.Who is likely to rely on “it's not my fault”?
A.A highly selfcritical teenager.
B.A teenager unwilling to admit a fault.
C.A teenager facing up to his responsibilities.
D.A teenager anxious about uncontrollable things.
6.What is the author's advice on getting teens to assume responsibility?
A.Letting them focus on what is done.
B.Persuading them to admit their fault.
C.Making them correct the mistake actively.
D.Helping them analyze the reason for the mistake.
7.Why does the author raise such a question in Paragraph 5?
A.To put forward a new solution to drawbacks.
B.To show handling problems should come first.
C.To explain why teenagers get stuck in sharing blame.
D.To analyze what kind of problem is caused by others.
8.What is the author's purpose in writing this text?
A.To help teenagers out of selfblame.
B.To tell parents how to educate children.
C.To help teenagers face mistakes properly.
D.To tell children to do selftalk consciously.
根据第二段中的“The reason why variations of ‘it's not my fault’ are so popular is that it lets us off the hook from guilt, blame and anger.” 结合下文中的“In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape responsibility and punishment for mistakes.”
根据第四段中的“In trying to get them to assume responsibility ...to drawbacks to find solutions to the drawbacks actively.”
根据第五段中的“People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway.Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively.”可知,作者认为不论是谁的错误,都必须先解决问题,否则会阻碍人们有效地向前发展,进而在下文中提出问题“What does one do if he is pushed into a deep lake?”并进行分析,结合下文中的“At some point,he needs to swim to shore, regardless of the fault.”
