Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison on Robben Island， off the coast of Cape Town.

Today， it's a major tourist attraction.Visitors are given tours and lectures by former prisoners.Visitors can see the little cell （牢房） where Mandela was held， at first① with only a straw mat （草席） to sleep on， and can visit the limestone quarry （石灰石采石场） where he spent 13 years working along with② other prisoners.On a sunny day， the bright light from the white rock is blinding， but Mandela was refused the use of dark glasses.His eyesight never fully recovered.

Though Mandela may have been a prisoner on Robben Island， he always insisted on③ acting as④ a leader.He complained to visitors about prison conditions and never let himself be bullied （欺负） by the guards.Instead he took an interest in⑤ their lives and problems.He even started reading works by Afrikaner （南非白人的） writers as well as⑥ other favorites like Winston Churchill so that⑦ he could understand their way of thinking.Most important of all， he became the prisoners' leader and spokesman.Mandela and the other prisoners discussed strategy （策略；计策） and the news from the outside world.

In 1982， Mandela was moved to Pollsmoor Prison on the mainland.The authorities offered Mandela his freedom on the condition that⑧ he unconditionally gave up⑨ violence.He refused， but then began the negotiations （谈判） with the authorities that would finally lead to⑩ his own release.

In 1988 he was moved yet again， this time to Victor Verster， where he was still under guard⑪  but had a garden， a swimming pool and even a cook to make him fish cakes for breakfast.It was here that he held the final negotiations⑫  that led to his release.
