Hot weather hits Southeast Asia
东南亚热浪肆虐
What is life like for a person living in a “frying pan (煎锅)”? People in Southeast Asia are experiencing this. In May, temperatures in many countries have reached about 50°C, including Thailand and the Philippines.
We all know that summers are hot. But why is it so crazily hot now in Southeast Asia? Global warming (全球变暖), which we have talked about a lot, is of course one of the reasons for the heat. What makes it even hotter is a climate pattern (气候模式) called El Nino. This brings more warm ocean water and influences land temperatures.
“On some days, it can even get so hot that it feels like your skin (皮肤) is burning,” Sek Seila, an 11-year-old student from Cambodia, told CNN. When it’s really hot, you might feel dizzy (头晕的), throw up, or even pass out (昏迷). In very serious situations, the heat could lead to death.
Even if you feel OK, your daily life may be very different. Schools might close because they don’t have air conditioning (空调系统). You might not have fish to eat because they died in the heat. Vegetables could become more expensive because the heat influences how much can be grown. For farming families, their plants could be damaged by the heat.
Rich people can live comfortably in rooms with air conditioning, but many others can’t. They use simple ways to stay cool. For example, people paint roofs white to reflect (反射) more sunlight and make it cooler inside. They also wear light-colored clothes, drink more water and shower more often.
“The climate crisis (危机) is deeply unfair,” said a World Economic Forum report. This is because the poor suffer (遭受) more in the heat.
Choose the answer:
1.Why does the writer use “frying pan” in the first paragraph?
A.To show the cooking in Southeast Asia. B.To talk about personal experiences.
C.To introduce Asian culture. D.To show how hot it can be.
2.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Special climate patterns. B.The influence of global warming.
C.The causes of El Nino. D.Reasons behind the unusual heat.
3.What are the possible results of the crazy heat?
a. Expensive air conditioners.
b. Health problems.
c. The closing of schools.
d. Food shortages.
e. Better environment.
A.abc B.ace C.bcd D.cde
4.What can we learn from people’s ways of dealing with the heat?
A.Hot weather can bring people lots of fun.
B.Light-colored clothes can reflect heat.
C.Air conditioners are not environmentally-friendly.
D.Drinking water is the best way to cool down.

As he was digging, other helpless parents and the firemen arrived and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying, “It’s too late! They’re all dead! There’s nothing you can do!” To them he replied with one line, “Are you going to help me now?” And then he kept on digging.
No one helped, however. He went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for 8 hours... 12 hours... 24 hours... 36 hours... then, in the 39th hour, he pulled a rock and heard his son’s voice. He shouted his son’s name, “ARMAND!” He heard back, “Dad! It’s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. Passage4
(23-24八年级下·浙江杭州·期中)①Hail (冰雹), also called hailstorm, is a form of precipitation (降水形式)—like rain or snow—that is made up of ice. Hailstorms may happen all year long. Hail can even form in summer as long as the storms are strong.
②Hailstorms often visit the United States. The area where Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming meet is known as “Hail Alley” and they suffer seven to nine hail days every year. It’s hard to tell exactly when a hailstorm might come.
③Hailstorms are very dangerous. They can cause lots of damage (破坏) to people, buildings, cars, plants and animals. In fact, hailstorms can even cause deaths. For example, a hailstorm killed around 1,000 English soldiers in 1360. So we should know how to stay safe during it.
④One way to protect yourself from a hailstorm is to have your tools prepared throughout the year, and one of them must be helmets. They can help you save your head from both the hail itself and other things brought by heavy storm. You should also make a plan for your family so that you all know where to go for safety.
⑤What’s more, make sure you stay inside until the hail stops and stay away from windows. If possible, find a room at least one level down from the top of the house. Finally, if you get caught outside in a hail storm and can’t find a house to stay in, find something to protect your head. Remember: stay out of lowland areas, because they could be filled with water. And don’t forget to avoid trees.

D.The tree leaves will drop on the head.
4.What is the structure of the passage?
A.B. C. D.
Passage5
(23-24八年级下·四川成都·期中)When you look at a mountain with snow on the top, it looks so beautiful. But that can change very quickly if an avalanche happens.
An avalanche is a large amount of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, typically on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at speeds of 96 km/h to 129 km/h.
Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of humans, like climbers, and snow mobiles (雪地摩托). Strong winds, earthquakes, and even animals can also make them happen.
Avalanches happen all year around. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Alps and the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When it happens, the fast moving snow, ice and rocks can sweep away everything on the way. They cover people alive and the snow is so heavy that they can’t breathe. Some avalanches cover all the houses and villages along the way. Once an avalanche stops, the snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold.
However, what can we do to keep safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Education and proper training can help. Never start climbing when the snow begins melting (融化), especially in spring. Avalanches may happen in this season at any minute. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Bring useful tools, like a beacon to help others find you. Phones sometimes don’t work on mountains. Keeping quiet on the mountains is also important.
Anyway, avalanches are part of nature, we need to have a respect for the mountains and weather at all the time.
1.According to the passage, which picture shows an avalanche?
A.B. C.
2.Which of the following situation may NOT be the reason for avalanches?
A.The temperature in the snow mountain continues to drop.
B.Climbers shout loudly when climbing the snow mountain.
C.A rock sheep looked for food in the snow and broke through the ice.
3.What are the possible results of an avalanche according to the passage?
①It can make people feel colder. ②It can cover houses and villages. ③It can make the snow become harder.
A.①② B.②③ C.①③
4.Which is the right way to keep safe?
A.Start climbing after the snowstorm right away.
B.Climb snow mountains in spring with useful tools.
C.Take a beacon whenever you climb snow mountains.
5.The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A.explain the causes and results of avalanches
B.tell people how to keep away from avalanches
C.introduce avalanches and the ways to keep safe
Passage6
(24-25八年级上·江苏南京·期末)Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, rainstorms and strong winds, usually make a big difference to human life. They not only cause property (财产) loss but also take away people’s lives.
Strong winds can be very terrible. On March 31st, 2024, strong winds hit Nanchang, Jiangxi province. The strong winds broke the windows into pieces and blew off three people sleeping at home, causing their deaths. What’s worse, more than 1,600 trees were blown down overnight. This deadly disaster was mainly caused by funnelling (狭管效应).
When the earthquake happens, the ground and buildings will shake terribly. In serious situations, buildings may even fall down and will bury people in the ground. Recently, in Taiwan, the most powerful earthquake in a quarter century rocked the island on April 3rd. At least nine people were killed and hundreds of people were hurt.
Another example is rainstorms. They can flood many places. Dubai lies on the coast of the Persian Gulf and in the northeast of the U. A.E. with a long and beautiful coastline. It doesn’t rain a lot. But on April 16th, a big rainstorm hit Dubai. It rained so much in just 12 hours that it was like a year’s worth of rain. The heavy rain flooded roads, shopping malls, and even airports, causing a lot of damage (破坏).
To better deal with natural disasters, we need to make our disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief coordination system (防灾救灾机制) better. Also, people should learn ways to protect themselves when facing natural disasters. But most importantly, we should realize that we are not the master of nature, we need to care about it and respect (尊重) it.
1.How many pieces of news about natural disasters are mentioned?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
2.What kind of damage can an earthquake probably cause?
A.It can blow down a lot of trees overnight.
B.It can make buildings fall and kill people.
C.It can flood many places like roads and airports.
D.It can make plants die because of too little water.
3.How does the writer develop Paragraph 2?
Mini-dictionary
Facts are true statements. They include names, dates, events and numbers. Opinions tell what we believe, feel or think. They may not be true.
A.Fact—Opinion—Way B.Fact—Way—Opinion
C.Opinion—Fact—Reason D.Opinion—Reason—Fact
4.What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Why natural disasters can take away people’s lives.
B.How we can respect nature and live better with it.
C.Where we can learn about different natural disasters.
D.Which kind of natural disasters is the most dangerous.
Passage7
(24-25八年级上·江苏无锡·期末)
A tornado is a tower of spinning air. Tornadoes can be very dangerous. The cause of tornadoes is not fully known. They form during thunderstorms. Inside the stormy clouds, warm air rises and cool air falls. The warm and cool air can begin to spin. This spinning air can push out of the storm clouds as a funnel. When the funnel of spinning air touches the ground, it becomes a tornado.
There are three levels of tornadoes. Weak tornadoes have wind speeds that are below 160km/h. They last for less than ten minutes. They cause small damage like fallen tree branches. Strong tornadoes have wind speeds that are between 177km/h and 330km/h and can last about twenty minutes. These tornadoes can cause quite a bit of damage and can push cars and trains over. The most dangerous tornadoes are called violent tornadoes. They can last for longer than an hour and have wind speeds that are higher than 330km/h. These deadly tornadoes can lift houses and cars into the air.
Tornadoes and cyclones are very different. Tornadoes form on land and cyclones form on the ocean. Tornadoes can be a few kilometres wide. The biggest cyclones can be hundreds of kilometres across.
Some people set up a safe room in a basement. They get a radio, water, sleeping bags and extra food. They also keep their house and garden clean by getting rid of dead trees or weak fences. If a tornado alert is given, get your saferoom ready. Do not go outside or near windows. Hide under a large bed or table. Get out of your trailer or car. If you are outside, find flat ground. Lie down and protect your neck and head with your arms. Once the tornado is over, turn on the radio. Avoid any damaged areas and do not go near any fallen power lines.
1.What can we learn about tornadoes?
A.Tornadoes usually happen on sunny and windy days.
B.Tornadoes happen when the storm clouds touch the ground.
C.Tornadoes can be hundreds of kilometres across the land.
D.Tornadoes can take houses and cars into the air sometimes.
2.The following sentence can best be put at the beginning of _________. There are many different ways to prepare for a tornado.
A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2
C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4
3.The meaning of the underlined phrase “getting rid of” might be ________.
A.throwing B.keeping C.counting D.recording
4.What’s the purpose of the article?
A.To introduce tornadoes to us. B.To show us the danger of tornadoes.
C.To tell the differences of natural disasters. D.To give us some tips to protect ourselves.
Passage8
(24-25八年级上·江苏无锡·期末)阅读下面短文,根据短文内容及选项,从文后选出最合适的选项填入空格内,选项中有两项多余。
Earthquakes are one of the most serious natural disasters. 1 It is a good way recommended by emergency management organizations (应急管理组织) in many countries. Remember these following tips, and you may protect yourself and your family.
Drop to your hands and knees under a table or desk.
In the first few seconds after the shaking starts, try to quickly move away from anything that may fall and hurt you. 2 If you’re in a public place, such as a store, do not rush away hurriedly. Get away from glass and walls to find a safe place to take cover. 3 A table or a bed can offer cover from falling things. Get down on your knees and stay under the table until the shaking stops.
4
Heads and necks are the most important as well as the easiest part to get hurt. If you’re in bed during an earthquake, stay there and protect your head and neck with something soft such as thick clothes or soft pillows (枕头). These things are soft enough to protect your head and neck. If there’s nothing helpful, cover your face, head and neck with your hands and arms carefully.
Hold on and keep careful.
Stay until the shaking completely stops. Keep careful even when you get up as aftershocks (余震) can happen at any time after an earthquake. 5
Watch out for broken glass and falling walls. Wear a pair of trainers and put on a pair of long trousers and a shirt. Be careful not to hurt yourself.
A.Cover your head and neck.
B.Keep calm if you’re trapped.
C.You should have a plan during an earthquake.
D.If you’re at home, look for a hard piece of furniture.
E.If an aftershock happens, “drop, cover, and hold on” until it stops.
F.To live during an earthquake, remember “drop, cover, and hold on”.
G.Get low and walk away from any danger such as windows and shelves.

Just before midnight on July the 31st, 1997, some skiers returning to their hotel in the village of Thredbo heard a huge sound. The frightened skiers rushed to where the noise came from and found that part of the hillside above the village had dropped down onto two buildings in which nineteen people had been sleeping.
As soon as the day broke, rescue workers began digging for people alive. They used hand tools because they were worried that machines might hurt anyone trapped (围困) under the rocks. For two days, rescue workers never stopped digging. On Thursday evening they found the first body. The next day they found two more. They had almost given up hope of finding anyone alive when, at 5: 37 a. m. on Saturday morning, a special machine they were using found a small movement.
Immediately someone shouted to tell the workers to be silent. Everyone stopped talking, and no one moved. A fireman lay down over to a hole in a large piece of concrete (混凝土) and shouted down, “Can anyone hear me?” “I can hear you,” came the reply.
Worried that their digging could start more rocks falling down the mountain, rescue workers began carefully taking away the rocks and dirt on top of the trapped man. By 10 o’clock, a small hole had been made. At 10: 10 a. m. , rescue workers sent two tubes down through the hole, one carrying warm air and the other a warm drink. Then a microphone was passed through the hole so that they could talk to the man.
For the next seven hours, two workers talked to the trapped man while others slowly and carefully worked to free him. They found out that his name was Stuart Diver. By the time he was found, he was cold and hungry and had almost given up any hope of being rescued.
Finally, at 5: 17 p. m. on Saturday evening, Stuart was pulled out. Rescue workers all over the hillside began shouting with joy. In thousands of homes, people were also cheering as they watched the rescue on their television.

Passage2
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C 4.B
