Learning from Pompeii: Prevention and Preparedness for Natural Disasters
When it comes to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, we can’t help but think of its thriving markets, grand buildings, and busy harbors. However, it was completely destroyed by the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This tragedy, which serves as a reminder, makes us realize the importance of disaster prevention and preparedness.
Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons, pose great threats to life and property. Consequently, to prevent such disasters, we can take active measures like planting trees to hold soil, building dams to control floods, and conducting strict construction standards. Furthermore, it is vital to raise education on disaster awareness and conduct regular drills.
When disasters strike, swift evacuation, access to emergency supplies, and effective communication are important. Cooperation and unity can lead us through the darkest hours. Let’s learn from Pompeii and be ready to face nature’s challenges.
With it getting dark, Jason decided that it was just too dangerous to continue. He gathered the group in the shelter of a large rock, where he noticed that the other three were frightened and looking to him for a way out. Pushed by responsibility and pressure of leadership, Jason, shouting against the wind, explained that the safest thing for the moment was taking shelter from the pouring rain. They had expected that the storm would pass very soon. However, as darkness settled over them, the shower swept in. How time dragged!
Finally, the storm showed signs of stopping and the climbers stepped out of the shelter. Unbearably cold and hungry, they felt their way downward with great difficulty, eager for a miracle. Suddenly, something caught Jason’s eye. Was it a flash of light? There it was again…and another! In response, Jason immediately flashed his torch, exclaiming, “Over here! We are here!” His companions joined in. Rescue eventually arrived. Seeing the climbers, all the searching villagers breathed a sigh of relief and lovingly helped them return to the village. You see, weather changes but love remains.

When people are trapped under debris (碎片) without access to fresh air or water, timing is very important. In disasters such as earthquakes and floods, survivors and rescue teams often have to deal with difficult situations without the help of communications networks. Disaster relief technology can find survivors just in time.
When hazards get out of control, they become disasters that can turn an otherwise peaceful location into something like a war area. While military leaders use the latest technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (情报、监视和侦察) , the same technology can be applied to disaster relief.
Global Hawk, for example, provides views of disaster areas without putting people at unnecessary risk. This autonomous aircraft (自主飞行器) can fly high for long hours without a pilot. It is equipped with cameras that can “see” through clouds and bad weather, day and night. Furthermore, Global Hawk can also provide communications support. After a big earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Global Hawk surveilled damaged airports to find safe landing sites for relief aircraft. Rescue workers also used videos from Global Hawk observations to compare before and after images of the area to identify areas of need and plan clear ways to get to those locations.
Additionally, a new aircraft called Firebird can provide similar help. It’s a mid-level aircraft in terms of altitude, which is inexpensive and flexible. Pilots can fly this aircraft and then quickly turn it into an un-piloted aircraft, for example, in order to stay in the air longer and to go near dangerous areas to gather information.
Rescue workers continue to use traditional tools such as listening devices, cameras and dogs that are trained to find survivors. And over time, they’re also adding new disaster relief technology to their toolkits. With each new technology being used, lives are saved.
24.What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 2mean?
A.Dangerous situations.
B.Modern technologies.
C.Limited supplies.
D.Hidden traps.
25.What is the main purpose of Global Hawk in disaster relief?
A.To clear away debris.
B.To produce fresh water.
C.To provide a bird’s-eye view.
D.To conduct ground-based searches.
26.How does the author prove the usefulness of Global Hawk?
A.By listing its detailed fact file.
B.By comparing it with other aircraft.
C.By introducing the science behind it.
D.By giving an example of its application.
27.What is special about Firebird?
A.It is the fastest aircraft.
B.It is the cheapest aircraft.
C.It allows both low and high altitude flights.
D.It allows both piloted and unmanned flights.

Last month, a series of wildfires broke out in southern California, killing dozens of people. The clouds of smoke can even be seen from space.
People of many fire-prone (容易起火的) areas as well as those far downwind have grown familiar with the thick, orange smoke. Such smoke can contain an unpredictable chemicals linked with heart and lung diseases and even cancer. Here’s what makes wild-fire smoke so dangerous.
When organic matter like trees burns, it releases CO2, water, heat and, depending on the available fuel, various chemicals and particles (颗粒) . Those tiny particles, which float in the air, can include metals, dust and more. If they’re smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (直径), they can get through our body’s natural defenses when breathed in and go deep into the lungs, causing many health problems. Such particles, called PM2.5, is a common pollutant. It’s also created by motor vehicles and industrial plants. But the type present in wildfire smoke can be much more harmful to the human body.
When a fire breaks out in an urban area, it destroys homes, offices, cars and other facilities. In other words, more stuff is burned. Paints, metals and more can release many kinds of harmful chemicals. A 2023 study found that the quantity of harmful chemicals released during urban wildfires was more than 1,000 times larger than that in fires happening in woodland areas.
What’s worse, over time, the smoke is exposed to sunlight. The radiation can cause a set of reactions that usually result in other pollutants. Then, as smoke containing these chemicals travels and settles over other cities, it can mix with even more local pollution. Research also suggests that those chemicals and particles, both possibly harmful, can combine to make their respective health risks even worse.
28.What is the main topic of the text?
A.The causes of wildfires.
B.Climate change impact.
C.Preventing urban wildfires.
D.Health risks of wildfire smoke.
29.Why is PM2.5 from wildfire smoke dangerous?
A.It enters the lungs.
B.It travels far.
C.It’s larger in size.
D.It’s only from fires.
30.What’s a key difference between urban and woodland wildfires?
A.Urban fires affect more trees.
B.Urban fires burn less material.
C.Urban fires release more pollutants.
D.Urban fires produce less smoke.
31.What will probably happen when wildfire smoke is exposed to sunlight?
A.It changes color.
B.It becomes harmless.
C.It quickly disappears.
D.It forms other pollutants.
D
Aling Nenita is a 56-year-old mother to five children and a farmer in a remote community in the Municipality of Tumauini, located in the province of Isabela. The area has rich agricultural lands, but the farming families still experience hunger and food insecurity. Nenita’s husband is also a farmer. The couple are busy working on their farmland to provide for the needs of their children.
Not long ago, a typhoon attacked the area where Nenita lives, which caused heavy flooding that resulted in the massive destruction of farmlands, houses, and crops.
Nenita stood there still, her eyes filled with sadness, her voice trailing off (逐渐减弱) as she remembered how she nearly lost everything to the flood. It destroyed the ready-to-harvest crops in Nenita’s little farmland. “It was truly arduous for all of us,” she said. It was challenging for them to start again as they didn’t have spare money for seeds and other basic planting needs.
Luckily, the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) responded quickly and provided agricultural support to the affected areas in Isabela, preventing the most at-risk families from further sinking into hunger.
When CDRC reached Nenita’s community, she was one of those who received immediate assistance from the organization. You could see the happiness on her face as she lined up at the distribution site. Due to this project, she was given short-cycle vegetable seeds that she planted in her garden. She also received agricultural tools to help her farm more effectively and bags of fertilizers to make her garden fruitful.
As Nenita’s family gradually saw their planted seeds starting to grow, hope began to rise again. The agricultural assistance not only ensured a future harvest of enough food but also helped restore their hope in the face of future difficulties.
32.What can we learn about Nenita’s family?
A.They work in different fields.
B.They want to move to the city.
C.They live in a rich neighborhood.
D.They struggle to make ends meet.
33.What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Strange.
B.Tough.
C.Important.
D.Surprising.
34.How did CDRC support Nenita’s family?
A.By raising money for them.
B.By offering them food and clothes.
C.By providing them with places to stay.
D.By giving them seeds and tools to farm.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Hope in the face of a disaster
B.Brave mother on the farmland
C.Let your hopes shape your future
D.An opportunity always lies in a disaster

The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement, the four young climbers patted each other on the back.
As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a troubled look on his face.
“What is it, Jason?” Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.
“Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way,” Jason replied. He remembered the villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm could appear from nowhere.
“But it’s so warm and sunny here. I don’t think the storm is coming this way,” Sofia said, more in hope than expectation.
However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, “If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically. The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast.”
The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner than expected. The wind screamed in their ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.

W: That would be bad for her health. Has she lost any weight?
M : She doesn't look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight, only eggs for three meals.
W: That's bad for her heart! Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart.
M: I've also read that. What about a fish diet? One of my cousins eats nothing but fish, even for breakfast!
W: That's too expensive. The best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. That's why I'm on my way to the tennis court.

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.D 27.D
根据第二段中“When hazards get out of control, they become disasters that can turn an otherwise peaceful location into something like a war area. (当hazards失控时,它们就会变成灾难,把原本和平的地方变成类似战区的地方。)”可知,提到“hazards”失控会变成灾难,让和平之地变成类似战区,结合常识可知,只有危险的情况失控才会演变成灾难,由此可知,hazards意思是“危险的情况”。故选A。
根据第三段中“Global Hawk, for example, provides views of disaster areas without putting people at unnecessary risk. This autonomous aircraft (自主飞行器) can fly high for long hours without a pilot. It is equipped with cameras that can “see” through clouds and bad weather, day and night. (例如,“全球鹰”可以在不将人员置于不必要风险的情况下提供灾区视图。这种自主飞行器可以在没有飞行员的情况下高空飞行数小时。它配备了可以在白天和晚上穿透云层和恶劣天气的摄像头。)”可知,Global Hawk在救灾中的主要目的是提供鸟瞰图,以便了解灾区情况。故选C。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中“After a big earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Global Hawk surveilled damaged airports to find safe landing sites for relief aircraft. Rescue workers also used videos from Global Hawk observations to compare before and after images of the area to identify areas of need and plan clear ways to get to those locations. (2010年海地发生大地震后,“全球鹰”对受损机场进行了监视,为救援飞机寻找安全着陆点。救援人员还利用“全球鹰”观察到的视频来比较该地区的前后图像,以确定需要援助的区域,并规划清晰的到达这些地点的路线。)”可知,作者通过给出Global Hawk在海地地震中应用的例子来证明其有用性。故选D。
27.细节理解题。根据第四段“Additionally, a new aircraft called Firebird can provide similar help. It’s a mid-level aircraft in terms of altitude, which is inexpensive and flexible. Pilots can fly this aircraft and then quickly turn it into an un-piloted aircraft, for example, in order to stay in the air longer and to go near dangerous areas to gather information. (此外,一种名为Firebird的新型飞机也可以提供类似的帮助。就高度而言,它是一种中级飞机,价格低廉且灵活。飞行员可以驾驶这架飞机,然后迅速将其变成一架无人驾驶飞机,例如,为了在空中停留更长时间,并靠近危险区域收集信息。)”可知,Firebird的特别之处在于它既允许有人驾驶飞行,也允许无人驾驶飞行。故选D。

【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.D
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Last month, a series of wildfires broke out in southern California, killing dozens of people. The clouds of smoke can even be seen from space.(上个月,加利福尼亚南部爆发了一系列野火,导致数十人丧生。从太空中甚至都能看到烟雾云团)”和第二段中“Such smoke can contain an unpredictable chemicals linked with heart and lung diseases and even cancer. Here’s what makes wild-fire smoke so dangerous. (这种烟雾可能含有与心脏病、肺病甚至癌症有关的不可预测的化学物质。这就是野火烟雾如此危险的原因)”可知,文章主要讨论了野火烟雾对健康的危害。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“If they’re smaller than 2. 5 micrometers in diameter (直径), they can get through our body’s natural defenses when breathed in and go deep into the lungs, causing many health problems. Such particles, called PM2. 5, is a common pollutant. (如果它们的直径小于2.5微米,吸入时就能突破人体的自然防御,深入肺部,引发许多健康问题。这种颗粒被称为PM2.5,是一种常见的污染物)”可知,PM2.5之所以危险,是因为它能进入肺部,引发健康问题。故选A。
根据第四段中“A 2023 study found that the quantity of harmful chemicals released during urban wildfires was more than 1,000 times larger than that in fires happening in woodland areas. (2023年的一项研究发现,城市野火释放的有害化学物质数量是林地火灾的1000多倍)”可知,城市野火与林地野火的关键区别在于城市野火释放的污染物更多。故选C。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段“What’s worse, over time, the smoke is exposed to sunlight. The radiation can cause a set of reactions that usually result in other pollutants. (更糟糕的是,随着时间的推移,烟雾会暴露在阳光下。辐射会引起一系列反应,通常会产生其他污染物)”可知,野火烟雾暴露在阳光下会形成其他污染物。故选D。

【答案】32.D 33.B 34.D 35.A
根据第一段中“The couple are busy working on their farmland to provide for the needs of their children. (这对夫妇整日忙于耕作,只为养活膝下的孩子们)”和第三段中“It was challenging for them to start again as they didn’t have spare money for seeds and other basic planting needs. (因缺乏购买种子等基本农资的积蓄,他们重启生产困难重重)”可知,该家庭需拼命劳作,且无积蓄应对灾害,这说明他们勉强维持生计。故选D项。
33.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Nenita stood there still, her eyes filled with sadness, her voice trailing off (逐渐减弱) as she remembered how she nearly lost everything to the flood. It destroyed the ready-to-harvest crops in Nenita’s little farmland. (Nenita呆立原地,眼中噙满悲伤,当她忆起那场洪水几乎卷走一切时,声音渐渐低弱下去。这场灾难摧毁了她小农场上那些本该丰收的庄稼)”可知,庄稼被毁导致Nenita一家的生活陷入困境,画线词意思应该是“艰辛的,困难的”,与Tough“艰苦的”意思一致。故选B项。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Due to this project, she was given short-cycle vegetable seeds that she planted in her garden. She also received agricultural tools to help her farm more effectively and bags of fertilizers to make her garden fruitful. (得益于该项目,她获得了可在菜园种植的速生蔬菜种子。此外,她还收到了能提升耕作效率的农具,以及能让菜园硕果累累的肥料)”可知,CDRC为Nenita一家提供种子和农具。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Not long ago, a typhoon attacked the area where Nenita lives, which caused heavy flooding that resulted in the massive destruction of farmlands, houses, and crops. (不久前,一场台风袭击了Nenita所在的地区,引发严重洪灾,导致大面积农田、房屋和农作物损毁)”和最后一段中“As Nenita’s family gradually saw their planted seeds starting to grow, hope began to rise again. (当Nenita一家看着播下的种子渐渐发芽,希望又重新在心中萌生)”可知,文章主要讲述了农民Nenita一家在洪灾后濒临绝境,后因CDRC的农业援助重燃希望的故事。因此,A项“灾难中的希望”既包含洪水摧毁农田的灾害,又突出CDRC援助带来的希望,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
With it getting dark, Jason decided that it was just too dangerous to continue.

A.By listing its detailed fact file.
B.By comparing it with other aircraft.
C.By introducing the science behind it.
D.By giving an example of its application.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
With it getting dark, Jason decided that it was just too dangerous to continue.
