Celebrate spring with free admission to national parks
If you are eager to get outside and enjoy the budding trees and blooming daffodils (水仙), you’re in luck. On April 19, the National Park Service will not charge entry fees for all national parks that normally charge admission, saving you $25 to $35. Find a park near you at FeeFreeParksByState.htm. Then on April 22, many botanical gardens will offer admission in honor of Earth Day. Check local event listings or visit the websites of your favorite outdoor destinations for details and deals.
Enjoy Tax Day treats
Here’s a good reason to look forward to April 15: Many restaurants dish out special deals to celebrate making it through another Tax Day. Usually, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and California Pizza Kitchen give $10 off a $40 order, while Krispy Kreme sells a dozen doughnuts for half the price alone when customers buy another dozen at full price $12. Check out EatDrinkDeals.com for this year’s tasty bargains.
Sow seeds & score plants at no cost
Planning ahead? Seeds typically take 30 to 60 days to shoot, so if you can wait, they’re a great option. Pick up freebies (免费品) from “seed libraries” hosted at botanical centers by visiting SeedLibraryNetwork.org.
Want instant greenery? People often look to rehome mature plants when they’re refreshing their own gardens. Find them by searching “free plants” on Nextdoor.com.
Bring a cozy sweater
When feeling cold in a store, we tend to spend more. Supermarkets often keep temperatures low, which makes shoppers more likely to choose products based on emotions — like comforting snacks — as a way to cope with the cold. Wearing a warm sweater can help you better stick to your budget.
1. What can visitors do in April according to the passage?
A. Visit botanical gardens for free.
B. Enjoy free entry to some national parks.
C. Save $30 when dining out in most restaurants.
D. Find Earth Day events at FeeFreeParksByState.htm.
2. How much will it cost to buy two dozen doughnuts in Krispy Kreme on Tax Day?
A. $18. B. $12. C. $24. D. $6.
3. What do the four savings solutions have in common?
A. They are scheduled for April. B. They provide free items.
C. They are for economical people. D. They offer discount deals online.

It’s hard not to be impressed with 38-year-old Chris Ringot. The Missouri resident, who has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), has been competing in Special Olympics games since he was 10. He’s tried many Special Olympics sports — everything from golf to bowling to basketball — but swimming is his passion. The first time he got in the pool, he showed a natural talent. After that, it just took off.
From that moment on, swimming was a central part of his life. The camaraderie (友情) of Special Olympics and the swim family within it was really important to him, especially in the formative years. Chris became a star in competitions, and in 2011 he was selected for the Special Olympics World Games in Greece, where his relay team won a gold medal. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Chris.
When returning from the Games, he began giving keynote speeches to local organizations. He was the speaker in the school district where he grew up. The editor of the local newspaper wrote it was the best welcome-back-to-school speech he’d ever heard.
Last year Chris was inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame. The induction spoke not just to Chris’s athletic skills but also to what an inspiration Chris has been to his peers. Carrie, his sister, has never been surprised by his success. “We had great role models in our parents — growing up, it was always anything I could do, Chris could do. And most of the time Chris did it better!” she said.
Chris also credits his parents for his love of giving back to his community. He is involved in his church along with his wife. He has worked as a supplies assistant at the children’s hospital for seven years. And most meaningfully, he’s recently become a swimming coach for Special Olympics. “That was one of my dreams — it was a milestone for me,” Chris shares. “I want to pass what I’ve learned on to the next generation of swimmers.”
4. What can we learn about Chris Ringot from the first two paragraphs?
A. He was interested in becoming a star.
B. He won his first individual gold medal in 2011.
C. He developed his love for swimming instantly.
D. He competed in the Special Olympics before 10.
5. What does the underlined word “inducted” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Transformed. B. Divided. C. Merged. D. Introduced.
6. Which words can best describe Chris Ringot?
A. Talented and reserved. B. Diligent and kind.
C. Ambitious and likable. D. Adaptable and humble.
7. Why does the author mention Chris’ parents?
A. To comfort other families. B. To show their sorrow.
C. To emphasize their influence. D. To prove Carrie’s excellence.
C 5. D 6. B 7. C

The world of children’s publishing is tough. Print sales are struggling, and profits are thin. Because of this economic reality, many publishers lean heavily into “sure things”—like celebrity books, series, and popular IP projects.
Parents seek suitable books for their kids. Ben Okon, while enjoying reading with his son, found most books underestimated young readers. Instead of ABCs, he desired books on concepts like personal finance for kids. Nicole Filippone, whose daughter had sensory processing disorder (SPD), searched for books to make her feel accepted but couldn’t find any.
In the past, they might make up their own stories, tell them to their child at bedtime, and leave it at that. But now, easy access to print-on-demand companies like Amazon KDP and Ingram Spark has given parents a way to create the books they want. If they can’t buy it... they can write it!
Traditional publishers claim there’s low demand for such books. Are these parents losing money? The answer is absolutely “No!” Ben’s books have been already sold almost $60,000 in preorders. Nicole sold thousands of copies, and has become an influencer in SPD with 350,000 followers across multiple platforms.
Parents need these children’s books for just a few short years—when their kids are at the right age to learn from them! Traditional publishing moves so slowly that if the authors above had tried to go that route, their own kids would likely have been too old for picture books before they hit the shelves. When you’re a parent out to solve problems, you don’t have the luxury of being patient!
The explosion of self-publishing has opened the door for unknown authors to create books that fill those gaps in the market that traditional publishers can’t or won’t fill. And parent authors are the very people who discovered those gaps in the first place. There are always more stories to be told.
8. Why do many publishers focus on “sure things” according to the passage?
A. To meet public demands. B. To attract renowned authors.
C. To handle the financial stress. D. To advocate popular IP projects.
9. Which factor may motivate parents to start out on the path of self-publishing?
A. The lack of bedtime books. B. The easy access to Amazon KDP.
C. The deep affection for writing. D. The handsome profits of publishing.
10. How does the writer illustrate the popularity of self-publishing books?
A. By giving examples. B. By defining concepts.
C. By making comparisons. D. By presenting studies.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New publishing hits the Markets. B. Parent authors help fill shelf Gaps.
C. Traditional publishing is in a Dilemma. D. More children stories need to be Told.
C 9. B 10. A 11. B
根据第一段中“Because of this economic reality, many publishers lean heavily into “sure things”—like celebrity books, series, and popular IP projects.(正因为这一经济现实,许多出版商在很大程度上倾向于选择 “稳妥项目”—— 比如名人著作、系列丛书以及热门 IP 项目)”可知,许多出版商大幅倚重“稳妥项目”是为了解决经济压力。
根据第三段中“In the past, they might make up their own stories, tell them to their child at bedtime, and leave it at that. But now, easy access to print-on-demand companies like Amazon KDP and Ingram Spark has given parents a way to create the books they want...(过去,他们或许会自己编些故事,在睡前讲给孩子听,事情也就到此为止了。但如今,通过亚马逊 KDP、英格拉姆・斯帕克等按需印刷公司获取服务变得十分便捷,这为父母们提供了一种创作自己想要的书籍的途径……)”可知,像亚马逊KDP和英格拉姆这样的按需印刷公司让家长们可以轻松接触到出版渠道,从而能够创作自己想要的书籍。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Ben’s books have been already sold almost $60,000 in preorders. Nicole sold thousands of copies, and has become an influencer in SPD with 350,000 followers across multiple platforms.(Ben的书籍预售额已接近6万美元。Nicole售出了数千册书,并成为感觉处理障碍领域的影响力人物,在多个平台拥有35万粉丝)”推知,本段通过举例子的方式证明了自出版书籍的受欢迎程度。故选A项。
结合最后一段“The explosion of self-publishing has opened the door for unknown authors to create books that fill those gaps in the market that traditional publishers can’t or won’t fill. And parent authors are the very people who discovered those gaps in the first place. There are always more stories to be told.(自出版的蓬勃发展,为不知名作者打开了一扇门 —— 他们得以创作书籍,填补那些传统出版商无力或不愿填补的市场空白。而家长作者正是最早发现这些空白的人。值得讲述的故事还有很多)”可知,B项“家长作者有助于填补书架上的空白”包含文章中心话题,可以作为最佳标题。故选B项。
D
Hypnotising (催眠) people before an operation may sound unbelievable, but it is becoming standard medical practice in some hospitals in the US, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands.
The cases of surgical hypnosis that get the most attention involve someone having a major operation without any anaesthetic (麻醉剂), but the number of people who could be hypnotised so deeply is thought to be small.
What is more widely workable is for doctors to use hypnosis alongside drugs to help people feel less anxious when having procedures that they remain awake through. This can cut the amount of medication needed. One trial looked at children having a thin tube pushed into their hearts, which requires a general anaesthetic. Those who listened to a nurse reading from a hypnosis script in the preoperative period required a lower dose of drugs.
“It’s not an alternative to anaesthesia, it’s an adjunct (附属物),” says Samantha Black, an anaesthetist who helped develop hypnosis recording for the UK’s Royal College of Anaesthetists.
At a conference on “adjunctive medical hypnosis” at the Royal Society of Medicine in London in April, Black said people should be advised to listen to the recordings at home before a procedure. “Sometimes, patients can wait a couple of hours for their operations,” she says. “It’s very hard to relax in that kind of environment.”
But the application of hypnosis in surgery has aroused intense controversy. Some researchers are concerned about its sensitivity to individual differences among patients, and not all patients can achieve the desired hypnotic effect.
Black sees a silver lining, however. She believes that the exploration in this field may redefine the meaning of surgery — not just physical disinfection (消毒) and anesthesia, but also psychological preadaptation and active participation.
12. What does one trial of hypnosis on children exhibit in the case study?
A. Less suffering for families. B. Smaller amount of drug use.
C. Shorter duration of waiting. D. Higher efficiency of reading scripts.
13. What is Samantha Black’s attitude toward hypnosis before procedures?
A. Approving. B. Cautious. C. Subjective. D. Dismissive.
14. What is the main concern of researchers in paragraph 6?
A. The costly expense. B. Disbelief in doctors.
C. Individuals’ sensitivity. D. Patients’ recovery rate.
15. What does the text mainly talk about regarding hypnosis?
A. Its dominant impact on healing. B. Its well-received medical standards.
C. Its major upside over anaesthesia. D. Its underlying applications in surgery.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第三段“One trial looked at children having a thin tube pushed into their hearts, which requires a general anaesthetic. Those who listened to a nurse reading from a hypnosis script in the preoperative period required a lower dose of drugs. (一项试验针对的是需要全身麻醉将细管插入心脏的儿童。那些在术前听护士朗读催眠脚本的儿童需要的药物剂量更低。)”可知,对儿童进行催眠的案例研究表明催眠能减少药物使用量。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““It’s not an alternative to anaesthesia, it’s an adjunct (附属物),” says Samantha Black, an anaesthetist who helped develop hypnosis recording for the UK’s Royal College of Anaesthetists. (“它不是麻醉的替代品,而是一种辅助手段,” 萨曼莎·布莱克说,她是一名麻醉师,曾为英国皇家麻醉师学院开发催眠录音。)”以及第五段“Black said people should be advised to listen to the recordings at home before a procedure. (布莱克说,应该建议人们在手术前在家听这些录音。)”可知,萨曼莎·布莱克对手术前使用催眠持认可态度。故选A项。
根据第六段“Some researchers are concerned about its sensitivity to individual differences among patients, and not all patients can achieve the desired hypnotic effect.
I’ve been engaged in a years-long war with Grammarly over the phrase “in order to”. I occasionally use the grammar-checking site in my freelance writing work. It always highlights the phrase and suggests I reduce it down to “to.” ____16____ I’m a rhythm-focused writer, and sometimes the extra syllables work best. But this constant struggle against a robot copyeditor often depresses me about my writing ability.
Besides Grammarly, an array of writing tools are out there, from spelling and grammar checks to the AI generative tools like ChatGPT. They can be very helpful. But they endlessly complain about your work, which harms your confidence and depress you. ____17____
YOU DOING YOU
Some writing tools always redline the same grammar or vocabulary choice and insist it is a mistake instead of a choice, no matter the context. But you choose different grammar ideas, affection for certain words, or resistance to the so-called “rules” of writing. ____18____ They make your work unique.
Blindly following all that robotic advice may lead to work that could have been written by that robot, making you feel like a failure. To avoid having your spirit hurt by that cold, unemotional criticism — the key is to use these tools with authority.
USE THOUGHTFULLY
____19____ When using any AI tool for your writing, you have to approach it as an expert, because you’re the one getting paid to write something. You have to use it the same way a carpenter uses a saw.
Unless you fell into a writing career completely by accident and you’re one of those writers who actually hates writing, keep the fun stuff for yourself. ____20____
Remember that don’t let machines win and you’re in charge.
A. And just about every time, I refuse.
B. I didn’t use the word authority randomly.
C. So how do you handle AI-related depression?
D. These are the very DNA of your style and voice.
E. The following tips can build up even more confidence.
F. There is nothing wrong with using AI to correct your work.
G. Use AI merely for the dull task, like digging up references.
A 17. C 18. D 19. B 20. G
根据上文“It always highlights the phrase and suggests I reduce it down to “to.”(它总是会突出这个短语,并建议我将其简化为“to”这个形式)”以及下文“I’m a rhythm-focused writer, and sometimes the extra syllables work best.(我是个注重节奏的作家,有时候多出来的音节反而效果更佳)”可知,前文提到 Grammarly 总是建议将“in order to”简化为“to”,后文则说明作者作为注重节奏的作家,有时需要额外音节,因此此处应体现作者对该建议的拒绝,与A项中“而且几乎每次我都会拒绝”形成因果逻辑关系,故选A项。
根据上文“Besides Grammarly, an array of writing tools are out there, from spelling and grammar checks to the AI generative tools like ChatGPT. They can be very helpful. But they endlessly complain about your work, which harms your confidence and depress you.(除了Grammarly之外,市面上还有众多的写作工具,从拼写和语法检查工具到像ChatGPT这样的人工智能生成工具应有尽有。这些工具往往非常有用。但它们会无休止地对你的作品进行批评,这会损害你的自信心,让你感到沮丧)”可知,前文指出写作工具的过度批评会打击信心、让人沮丧,后文则给出应对建议,因此此处需要一个过渡句引出如何处理这种沮丧,C项“那么,对于与人工智能相关导致的抑郁情绪,你又是如何应对的呢?”符合语境,故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“But you choose different grammar ideas, affection for certain words, or resistance to the so-called “rules” of writing.(但你可能会采用不同的语法理念、偏爱某些特定的词汇,或者抗拒所谓的写作“规则”)”以及后文“They make your work unique.(这些都会使你的作品独具特色)”可知,前文提到作者对语法、词汇的选择或对所谓 “规则” 的抗拒,后文说明这些让作品独特,D选项中的 “These” 指代前文的选择,且解释了其与风格、声音的关系,衔接紧密。
根据后文“When using any AI tool for your writing, you have to approach it as an expert, because you’re the one getting paid to write something. You have to use it the same way a carpenter uses a saw.(在使用任何人工智能工具进行写作时,你必须将其视作一位专业人士来对待,因为你是那个需要完成写作任务的人。你应当像木匠使用锯子那样正确使用它)”以及本段标题为“USE THOUGHTFULLY(慎重考虑一下)”可知,后文提到使用AI工具时要以专家身份对待,就像木匠用锯子,而前文提到“use these tools with authority”,B 项解释了“authority”一词的用意,呼应上下文。故B项“我使用‘权威’这个词并非随意为之”符合语境,故选B项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Unless you fell into a writing career completely by accident and you’re one of those writers who actually hates writing, keep the fun stuff for yourself.(除非你是完全出于偶然才投身写作事业的,并且你还是那种真正讨厌写作的人,否则就把那些有趣的部分留给自己吧)”可知,前文建议保留写作中有趣的部分,本句说明AI仅用于枯燥工作,与“保留乐趣”形成对比,G项“仅将人工智能用于挖掘参考文献等枯燥任务”符合语境,故选G项。

“be of +抽象名词”相当于“be +该名词对应的形容词”,此处“be of great significance”相当于“be very significant”,表示“意义重大”,故填of。
分析句子结构可知,“____2____ has led to fruitful cooperation in various fields”为非限制性定语从句,先行词为前面整个句子“The Chinese and Brazilian economies are highly complementary”,关系词在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词which引导该定语从句,故填which。
根据时间状语“over the years”可知,此处强调过去发生的动作对现在造成的影响,应用现在完成时,其结构为“have/has +过去分词”,主语“The top leaders of the two countries”是复数,所以用have laid,故填have laid。
“opening up new prospects for China-Brazil relations in the new era”与“promoting the building of a China-Brazil community with ____8____ shared future”是并列关系,所以用连词and连接,故填and。
“a community with a shared future”表示“命运共同体”,此处表示泛指“一个命运共同体”,且shared是以辅音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词a,故填a。

Like most nights when Vanessa Kramer tucked (盖好被子) in her son, Daken, he became talkative, hoping to delay bedtime. But tonight, he had something important on his mind.
“I’m really going to miss my school,” said the 10-year-old, who would be graduating from Thomas Ultican Elementary in a few months and, in the fall, going on to middle school.
Daken’s eyes sparkled with determination as he turned to Vanessa. “I want to do something nice for my school, so they’ll remember me, just like the plaque (牌匾) hung in his school.” he declared, his voice filled with enthusiasm. Vanessa smiled warmly, immediately recognizing the passion behind his words. “That’s a wonderful idea,” she replied. “Let’s give it some thought, but right now it’s time to go to sleep,” she added gently.
Vanessa remembered her old school days, and the embarrassment when she couldn’t afford to buy lunch. They had a free lunch program, but her family didn’t qualify, even though her dad’s income was unreliable.
She knew the situation was still the same at Daken’s school. They never turned a child away, but they kept a running tab (累计记账) for those who didn’t pay.
“It’s not a problem for them now,” she told Daken. “But if they still owe money when they get to high school, they don’t get to go to senior party or walk at their graduation.”
“That’s not right!” he insisted. “We should ask all our friends and relatives to donate and pay off all the kids’ lunch debt, so they don’t have to miss things.”
Vanessa figured they could easily raise a few hundred dollars, but when she called the principal (校长) and learned the outstanding debt topped $3,000, she became worried.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
“We can raise it — I know we can,” Daken insisted.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At graduation ceremony, Daken gave the principal a check with all the funds.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“We can raise it — I know we can,” Daken insisted. He and his mom wrote a script for a Facebook video. Vanessa typed it up, Daken practiced reading the script several times and finally they filmed Daken’s appeal in his bedroom. “Please donate,” he pleaded in a 2-minute long video explaining the cause, and then they posted it to Vanessa’s Facebook page. A few hundred dollars in contributions came in as the video was shared. Then a local TV station picked up the story, and even more contributions poured in. In a month, the total topped $7,000. “That’s twice as much as kids owe!” Daken marveled.
At graduation ceremony, Daken gave the principal a check with all the funds. “Use the money to pay off kids’ debt and the extra for next year’s free lunches,” he said, his eyes clear and his voice filled with the sincere eagerness. The principal extended heartfelt gratitude to him. Then he pulled out a small package, “We have a surprise for Daken’s generosity.” Producing a carved plaque — “Daken Kramer Award,” he announced with wild applause. “This will hang in a place of honor at school.” “It’s important for kids not to be hungry. We couldn’t make it through the day without a good meal” Daken replied with a big smile. Daken, a kid hero, proved that it only took a small action to make a difference.
①.呼吁:appeal/call on
②.涌来:pour in/come
③.还清:pay off/wipe off
①.真诚的:sincere/genuine

It’s important for kids not to be hungry.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
