What made you turn to social media to record your vegetable growing? Initially, I used the online platform as a diary, something to look back on, giving me a sense of achievement and keeping me motivated and moving forward. As time went by, other gardeners and like minded people began to follow my progress, too. I know you grow lots of fruit on your land, which would you recommend to beginners as the best to grow? Strawberries would be a good choice. They produce a lot of fruit in their first season. That's cool. Well, do you have plans to try new or any particular crops next year? Next season, I will be adding some pair trees to the fruit area. I will be adding more urbs, which I can use in the kitchen. And after a couple of years of failure, I will try growing carrots again. What advice would you offer someone thinking of doing kitchen gardening? Have a plan of what you want your kitchen garden to look like. Don't be too discouraged if things don't go according to plan. Learn from your mistakes and move on. There's always next season. So mary, your kitchen garden looks excEllent. What made you turn to social media to record your vegetable growing? If you’re like me and find it hard to spend meaningful time in the gym, VR fitness might be for you. Here are my picks from the apps I have tested: Les Mills BodyCombat: Les Mills BodyCombat is great for beginners with a lot to offer-the works center around punching, squatting, and knee-striking targets. While the update added workouts and a new mixed reality mode showing you the room around you, I still look to other apps and games for variety. It also doesn’t have a “cool down” after the workouts — so I’ll typically switch to another app after my workout to relax. $ 30/one time purchase. FitXR: FitXR is a subscription-based app with a diverse line of workouts. A recent update added Zumba and a mixed reality mode called Slam to a list that includes boxing, combat, high-intensity interval training, sculpt and dance. I enjoy FitXR quite a bit, but it’s not my top recommendation due to the cost, the poor pictures, and some missing mixed-reality options. $3.00/ one time purchase. Supernatural: Supernatural is one of the most popular VR fitness apps. Unsurprisingly, it’s a polished experience with beautiful locations from around the world, popular music you’ll recognize, and energetic trainers with two main workout types — Boxing and Flow. $9.99/ month. Xponential+: Xponential+, the newest offering for Quest platforms, has partnered with other workout studios to bring their workouts to reality. I love how the app brings the workout into your living room by displaying a small version of the trainer on your floor or ceiling when it detects that you’re in a plank, push up, or lying on your back. $9.99/ month — also includes access to workouts via app or web. 21. What do Les Mills BodyCombat and FitXR have in common? A. Both provide mixed reality mode. B. Both are in line with beginners. C. Both provide a “cool down”. D. Both need so much money. 22. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Xponential+ makes you train with your coach on the floor or ceiling. B. Supernatural is available for monthly service with dynamic trainers. C. Les Mills BodyCombat has combined other apps with games. D. FitXR can provide high-quality pictures at a low price. 23. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A sports website. B. A tourist brochure. C. An assignment plan. D. A science magazine. B Years ago, my Singapore-based sister insisted my mother and I join her for the Christmas. My mum, a fearless woman, would get strangely nervous on flights. Perhaps the only thing that convinced her to overcome her fears was the chance to piece together our declining bond. Growing up, moments with Mum were painfully short-lived because I spent most time at the boarding school, reuniting only during the holidays. Every year, she would eagerly await my return, which would always lead to constant loving scenes. Those valuable moments were gradually disappearing as I moved away for university. Soon, our relationship became tense. She seemed unable to understand me and her stubborn and old-fashioned advice forced me to shut myself. But the more I pulled away, the more I felt a longing for the bond that had grown so weak. Perhaps Singapore would give us a chance to breathe it back to life. I assumed the immersive exhibits at Art Science Museum would refresh my mother, who was an art student. However, I was surprised when she just turned her nose up at the Bruges Whale, a sculpture using plastic waste to raise awareness about ocean pollution. “It’s art, Mum! Be more appreciative.” I defended. Disheartened by the distance between us, I led her to the kid’s zone. We signed up for a joint sketching activity, hoping that would help us connect. As our creative juices flowed, our faded relationship began to take on the hues (色调) and shades of something sincere and beautiful. “Look!” she excitedly pointed towards a digital screen that displayed our creations. “That one’s ours.” Mum went up and reached out, touching the fish as it moved its tail back and forth in the virtual tank. Looking around, I saw children sharing moments with their parents, and my own childhood flashed back. That rare instance where she let slip an inner innocence and delight at a new experience revealed the little girl in her, who was like me, had lost a vital connection to responsibilities of motherhood. “Our time together was like that of friends,” she remarks now. “You were my mother, and I were a child following you around.” Life has indeed come full circle. 24. Why did the author’s mother agree to take the flight to Singapore? A. She was fearless and adventurous by nature. B. She was eager to visit the Art Science Museum. C. She missed her Singapore-based daughter very much. D. She wanted to improve the relationship with the author. 25. What was the mother’s reaction to the sculpture Bruges Whale? A. She was deeply concerned about ocean pollution. B. She thought it was a creative use of plastic waste. C. She showed little interest and seemed unimpressed D. She showed great appreciation for its artistic value. 26. What can we infer from the joint sketching activity in the kid’s zone? A. It was a waste of time for adults. B. It helped the mother regain her identity as an art student. C. It made the author realize her mother’s hidden talent in art. D. It provided an opportunity for the mother and daughter to reconnect. 27. What does the last paragraph imply? A. The mother has finally overcome her fear of flying B. Their relationship has returned to a state of closeness. C. They have completed a round trip from their hometown to Singapore. D The author has grown up and now takes care of her mother like a parent. C For this year’s Fourth of July celebration, some U.S. cities have replaced traditional fireworks with impressive drone (无人机) light shows. Maybe most importantly, the drones being employed by more and more cities for Fourth of July celebrations don’t leave behind a blanket of smoke at a time when America’s air quality is already at its worst in decades. “Around the world, we’ve seen consistently that, during times when firework usage is really high, we have really bad air quality,” said Pallavi Pant, the head of global health at the Health Effects Institute. And while that pollution typically disappears quickly — usually around noon on July 5th — the concentration can be high enough to worsen the condition for those with breathing problems. Cities making the switch to high-tech shows say there’re plenty of other reasons why people may want to avoid traditional fireworks. “Fireworks can be harmful to folks who suffer from PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) or families who have dogs. Salt Lake City has more households with dogs than we do with kids,” said Lynze Twede, a manager for Salt Lake City Public Lands. “Being away from fireworks is considered by many to be the tendency of the future. Drones are reusable, while with fireworks, you have smoke, falling debris (碎片), and noise which especially stresses dogs and people with PTSD out.” About 12,264 fires were started by firework displays in 2021, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Those added up to around $59 million in direct property damage. But data also shows that much of the wildfire risk comes not from grand public displays, but from the small-scale shows on sidewalks. It may be too early to tell how this tendency may get close to smaller shows and consumers, but the price is a limiting factor. 8. What is the most important reason for U.S. cities’ giving up traditional firework shows? A. To reduce fire risks. B. To prevent noise pollution. C. To protect the environment. D. To support new technology. 9. What about fireworks typically threatens people with PTSD and dogs? A. Their thick smoke. B. Their falling debris. C. Their frightening noise. D. Their shining bright light. 10. What does the data from the National Fire Protection Association show? A. Public fireworks win more people’s favor. B. Street fireworks present more fire threats. C. Usage of fireworks is on the decrease. D. Prevention of fireworks is costly. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. What response Americans have to drone light shows. B. Why some U.S. cities replace fireworks with drones. C. How Americans celebrate special events. D. How drone shows develop in America. D In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium (钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes. The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. The team plan to improve the first design and hope to make the chopsticks available to consumers next year. The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce. The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women. The chopsticks use “very weak electricity — not enough to affect the human body — to adjust the function of ions such as sodium chloride and sodium glutamate to change the perception of taste by making food seem to taste stronger or weaker”, Kirin said in a statement. Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. High salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. “To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Kirin researcher Ai Sato. “If we try to avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would need to suffer the pain of cutting our favourite food from our diet, or suffer eating food with very little taste.” Miyashita’ s lab has also invented a lickable TV screen that imitates the flavours of various foods. 32. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us? A. How the chopsticks work. B. What the team plans to do. C. What the device is designed for. D. How a sense of saltiness is created. 33. What can be inferred from paragraph three? A. The chopsticks may be popular in Japan. B. The Japanese traditional diets are high in salt. C. The WHO advised an adult to take 2 0 grams of salt a day. D. A woman should eat at least 6.5 grams of salt everyday. 34. What is a direct result of the chopsticks according to clinical tests? A. Food can have stronger or weaker flavours. B. Low-sodium food tastes saltier than it actually is. C. People are less likely to have heart attacks and strokes. D. We may not be able to eat our favourite food anymore. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Japan conducts clinical tests on low-sodium diets B. Japanese high-tech salty chopsticks gain popularity C. Japan invents electronic chopsticks making food taste salty D. Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.” “It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said. “If that’s OK,” Mark added. “Oh dear” Mrs. Grady sounded disappointed, “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.” Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.” Then they struggled through the snow out of Ms. Grady’s driveway. Mrs. Grady slowly closed the door. When Mark watched Mrs. Grady’s lonely figure, memories of her heroic act last summer flooding his mind. Mr. Dunn’s dog, Goldie, escaped from his backyard. Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around the big dog. Mark had tried to call for his dad, but his tongue seemed locked behind his teeth. Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. “Goldie!” she’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had slipped between Mark and the dog. She wasn’t much taller than Mark, but she’ d stood firm as a rock in front of him. “Goldie, go home! ” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along. “Get! ” Goldie had obeyed. 21. A 22. B 23. D 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第一段中“Perhaps the only thing that convinced her to overcome her fears was the chance to piece together our declining bond.(也许唯一能说服她克服恐惧的就是有机会修复我们逐渐疏远的关系)”和第二段中“Perhaps Singapore would give us a chance to breathe it back to life.(也许新加坡会给我们一个让它起死回生的机会)”可知,作者的母亲同意乘飞机去新加坡是因为她想改善和作者的关系。 根据第三段中“However, I was surprised when she just turned her nose up at the Bruges Whale, a sculpture using plastic waste to raise awareness about ocean pollution.(然而,当她对布鲁日鲸不屑一顾时,我感到很惊讶,这是一座用塑料垃圾来提高人们对海洋污染认识的雕塑)”可知,母亲对布鲁日鲸的反应是“不屑一顾”,即表现出不感兴趣和印象不深。 根据第四段中“Disheartened by the distance between us, I led her to the kid’s zone. We signed up for a joint sketching activity, hoping that would help us connect.(由于我们之间的距离而感到沮丧,我把她带到了儿童区。我们报名参加了一个联合素描活动,希望这能帮助我们建立联系)”和第五段中“Mum went up and reached out, touching the fish as it moved its tail back and forth in the virtual tank.(妈妈走上前,伸出手,触摸着鱼,鱼在虚拟水箱里来回摆动着尾巴)”可知,儿童区的联合素描活动为母女俩提供了一个重新建立联系的机会。 根据最后一段中“Our time together was like that of friends(我们在一起的时间就像朋友一样)”和“Life has indeed come full circle.(生活确实已经回到了原点)”可知,最后一段暗示她们的关系已经回到了亲密的状态。故选B。 C For this year’s Fourth of July celebration, some U.S. cities have replaced traditional fireworks with impressive drone (无人机) light shows. C 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第一段中“Maybe most importantly, the drones being employed by more and more cities for Fourth of July celebrations don’t leave behind a blanket of smoke at a time when America’s air quality is already at its worst in decades. (也许最重要的是,在美国空气质量已经处于几十年来最糟糕的时期,越来越多的城市在7月4日庆祝活动中使用无人机,而无人机不会留下大量的烟雾)”可知,美国一些城市放弃传统烟花表演最重要的原因是保护环境。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Drones are reusable, while with fireworks, you have smoke, falling debris (碎片), and noise which especially stresses dogs and people with PTSD out. (无人机可以重复使用,而烟花则会带来烟雾、坠落的碎片和噪音,这些尤其会让狗和患有创伤后应激障碍的人感到紧张)”可知,燃放烟花的声音会使患有创伤后应激障碍的人群和狗感到紧张。故选C项。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“But data also shows that much of the wildfire risk comes not from grand public displays, but from the small-scale shows on sidewalks. (但数据也显示,大部分野火风险并非来自大型公共烟花表演,而是来自人行道上的小型烟花表演)”可知,街头烟花表演存在更大的火灾隐患。故选B项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“For this year’s Fourth of July celebration, some U.S. cities have replaced traditional fireworks with impressive drone (无人机) light shows. (在今年的7月4日庆祝活动中,美国一些城市用令人印象深刻的无人机灯光秀取代了传统的烟花表演)”和第二段中“Cities making the switch to high-tech shows say there’re plenty of other reasons why people may want to avoid traditional fireworks. (改用高科技表演的城市表示,人们想要避免传统烟花的原因还有很多)”可知,文章主要讨论了美国一些城市为什么选择用无人机灯光秀取代传统烟花表演,包括保护环境、减少火灾风险、避免噪音污染以及对应激障碍患者和宠物的影响等多方面原因。故选B项。 D In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium (钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes. Japanese researchers reduce sodium levels in popular dishes 【答案】32. A 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第二段中的“The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. 故选A。 根据第三段中的“The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan(这种筷子能够在日本找到接受它们的人群)”可推测出,这种筷子可能在日本会受欢迎,因此A选项正确;根据“where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce”可直接得出B选项,是直接信息,因此可排除B选项;根据“The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization(WHO).”可推知,10克是世界卫生组织推荐的盐日摄入量的两倍,所以世界卫生组织推荐的是每日摄入5克盐,因此可排除C选项;根据“The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women. (卫生部建议将每日盐摄入量减少到男性最多7.5克,女性最多6.5克。)”可推知,卫生部建议女性每天最多摄入6.5克盐,而不是至少6.5克,因此可排除D选项。故选A。 根据最后一段中的“Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. (Miyashita 和 Kirin表示,对低钠饮食的人进行的临床测试证实,该设备能将低钠食物的咸味提高约1.5倍。)”可知,使用筷子的直接结果是低钠食物吃起来比实际更咸。故选B。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium(钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes. When you’ re looking for inspiration, where do you go? ____36____ look through some magazines or design books, or even take a walk and take some photos. Depending on your project, the images, words, colors, and materials that inspire you might reveal interconnected themes. ____37____ Widely used for brainstorming, the mood board is a tool that inspires creativity across various fields. It’s an arrangement of elements that contribute to a project to keep its theme clear and consistent. It should include images, colors, textures, and typography ____38____ . 21. Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys.
