While all her classmates were flying through the 2nd and 3rd books in the Harry Potter series, Skye Malik, only on page four of the first book, got impossibly stuck on the word “doughnut”. Her unexpected difficulty with reading is called dyslexia. Skye got a professional diagnosis at the end of the 2nd grade. Knowing that other kids were going through the same thing made it easier on her somehow. What wasn’t easy, even after all the help she got from special tutors and reading programs, was fluent reading. What many people do without thinking — reading — she had to struggle with word by word, sometimes letter by letter. In class, she would hear the other kids flip through the pages on assignments and go on to the questions while she was still doing battle with the first paragraph. She was as frustrated as she was discouraged. But she didn’t know of any other way until her 4th grade teacher, Miss Pollock, told her about something called Learning Ally. Learning Ally is a non-profit organization that offers audio versions of books. A crew of volunteer readers has recorded 75,000 classic novels, children’s books, and school textbooks that help more than 300,000 students and adults with learning differences or who are blind. Now Skye could listen to the books with her ears and follow the words with her eyes on the page. Instead of having her mother read her textbooks to her, she could independently do her work. “With Learning Ally, I feel confident and capable and can easily keep up with my classmates,” Skye explains, “and I want other kids to feel empowered, just the way I did.” So Skye, now aged 16, created The Paco Project which was named after her grandfather, whose nickname was “Paco”. The Paco Project is a fundraiser and educational initiative focusing on giving students with dyslexia access to the same Learning Ally technology that changed her life. Skye has realized that she is one of the lucky kids who have been diagnosed. She knows that educating teachers about dyslexia and giving students with the learning challenge the tools they need is a great first step in meeting dyslexia head on, and helping them be confident, capable students. “Right now they feel stuck-ashamed, unsure and insecure about their school work. If I could help stop these students feeling this way, that would mean the world to me.” 14. According to the passage. Skye ________. A. found a way out with the help of Miss Pollock B. felt annoyed at being teased by her classmates C. preferred reading the first book of Harry Potter D. was diagnosed with dyslexia in her fourth grade 15. The Paco Project was created ________. A. to promote Learning Ally technology B. to empower those with reading difficulty C. with inspiration from Skye’s grandfather D. in response to the growing demands of teachers 16. The passage is mainly about ________. A. what people with dyslexia are suffering B. what measures are needed to beat dyslexia C. how Learning Ally influenced people with dyslexia D. how Skye battled against dyslexia and helped others 17. Which words best describe Skye’s character? A. Kind and patient B. Shy and dependent C. Persistent and caring D. Imaginative and curious 【答案】14. A 15. B 16. D 17. Skye got a professional diagnosis at the end of the 2nd grade. 斯凯在二年级结束时得到了专业诊断)”和第五段“So Skye, now aged 16, created The Paco Project which was named after her grandfather, whose nickname was “Paco”. The Paco Project is a fundraiser and educational initiative focusing on giving students with dyslexia access to the same Learning Ally technology that changed her life.(所以,现年16岁的斯凯创立了“帕科项目”,该项目以她的祖父命名,她祖父的昵称是“帕科”。 根据第四段““With Learning Ally, I feel confident and capable and can easily keep up with my classmates,” Skye explains, “and I want other kids to feel empowered, just the way I did.”(“有了Learning Ally,我感到自信和有能力,可以轻松地赶上我的同学,”斯凯解释说,“我希望其他孩子也能像我一样感受到力量。”)” 根据第四段“ Now Skye could listen to the books with her ears and follow the words with her eyes on the page. Instead of having her mother read her textbooks to her, she could independently do her work.(现在斯凯可以用自己的耳朵聆听这些书的内容,并通过眼睛在书页上跟随文字的指引来阅读。 C。 C We have known about climate change for decades. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer (see the graph). A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate. In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body, all that remained of the polar bear was “skin and bones”. An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth’s ecology. Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the “greenhouse effect”, which has two common meanings: the “natural” greenhouse effect and the “man-made” greenhouse effect. The “natural” greenhouse effect refers to the fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface as short-wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth’s climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the “man-made” greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly. There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses. Continued greenhouse gas emissions will result in further warming and long-lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our “carbon footprint” by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help? 18. What directly caused the death of the polar bear in Svalbard according to scientist? A. A sudden disease outbreak in the Arctic. B. Inability to hunt seals due to reduced sea ice. C. Competition from other predators for food. D. Extreme heatwaves melting its habitat. 19. Why is the “natural” greenhouse effect important and necessary? A. Because it traps heat to keep Earth’s climate warm enough for life. B. Because it stops the rise of sea levels and melting ice on Earth. C. Because it creates ideal conditions for polar bear habitats. D. Because it cools down the planet’s surface. 20. What are the consequences of high greenhouse gas emissions? A. Lower carbon footprints in people’s daily lives. B. The decrease in extreme weather events worldwide. C. Rising global temperatures and more natural disasters. D. The improvement of Earth’s ecology and sea ice levels. 21. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. The History of Climate Science B. How to Survive Extreme Weather Events C. The Tragic Story of a Starved Polar Bear D. Climate Change Requires the World’s Attention 【答案】18. B 19. A 20. C 21. 根据第二段“Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food.(专家们称,由于气候变化导致的海冰面积减少,使得北极熊无法像以前那样捕食海豹,因此它们不得不跋涉更远的路程去寻找食物)”可知,根据科学家的说法,导致斯瓦尔巴德地区那头北极熊死亡的原因是因海冰减少而无法捕食海豹。 根据第三段“Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth’s climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life.(大气中的温室气体,如甲烷和二氧化碳,会捕获部分热量,使地球的气候保持温暖且适宜生命存在。 故选A。 根据倒数第二段“There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses.(有大量且详尽的证据表明,气温的上升导致了全球范围内极端天气和自然灾害的增多,不仅造成了严重的破坏,还夺走了许多人的生命。 通读全文,并根据第一段“We have known about climate change for decades. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer (see the graph). A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate.(我们早就知道气候变化这一现象了。 不断变暖的海洋和大气层,以及冰层的融化和海平面的上升,都证明了全球气候发生了巨大的变化)”和最后一段“It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help?(我们有责任抓住每一个机会,向所有人普及全球变暖及其成因和影响,因为这是地球上影响我们所有人的最严峻问题。 三、阅读并回答问题 (共4题,前三题2分,最后一题4分,共10分) Music has long been considered to be an enjoyable pastime for many people. It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety. The mental health benefits from music can’t be argued. Music could also be helping you with many other health problems behind the scenes. Some experts say that music can be harmful if it is too loud. However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain. By distracting (分心) the mind from the pain, music, people say. can lower stress and anxiety levels. This, of course, can lead to less pain. Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed. They say it can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep. While the validity of the idea is still being assessed, the lowered stress can even be tied back to blood pressure. Similarly, according to researchers, listening to just 30 minutes of soft music every day may help with healthy blood sugar levels, through the lowering of stress and anxiety. When it comes to heart health, there is speculation (推测) that it’s not the style of music, but rather the tempo (节奏) that makes it so good for your heart health. In one European study, participants listened to music as the researchers monitored their heart rates and blood pressure. Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were. On the other hand, when the music slowed, the participants’ stress and anxiety levels became lower and the effects on heart rates appeared to follow suit. The implications of music on overall well-being are really impressive. But there is a whole range of other health issues that turning up the radio could be beneficial for, which is what makes music so valuable. 22. How can music help reduce pain according to some people? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 23. What are the possible effects of listening to relaxing music before bed? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 24. In the European study, what was the relationship between music tempo and participants’ heart rates? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 25. In your daily life, what benefits can music bring you? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】22. Because music can distract the mind from the pain, lower stress and anxiety levels, which can lead to less pain. 23. It can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep. 24. In the European study, the relationship between music tempo and participants' heart rates was that the more cheerful (faster tempo) the music was, the faster their heart rates were. Conversely, when the music slowed down, participants' stress and anxiety levels decreased, and this seemed to be reflected in their heart rates as well. 25. In my daily life, music brings many benefits. It relieves stress by calming my mind with soft melodies after study. It also helps me focus on tasks through instrumental tunes, and lifts my mood with upbeat songs when I’m tired. What’s more, it also creates a relaxing atmosphere for better sleep at night. making each day more balanced and enjoyable. 根据文章第二段“However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain. To introduce the history of the Colorado River B It was a reading class. A. found a way out with the help of Miss Pollock B. felt annoyed at being teased by her classmates C preferred reading the first book of Harry Potter D. was diagnosed with dyslexia in her fourth grade 15. Imaginative and curious C We have known about climate change for decades. Climate Change Requires the World’s Attention 三、阅读并回答问题 (共4题,前三题2分,最后一题4分,共10分) Music has long been considered to be an enjoyable pastime for many people. 22.
