A few years ago, my gym workouts were a joke — 5 minutes on the treadmill (跑步机), awkwardly struggling with weights, then escaping. Exercise just wasn’t my idea of fun.
Everything changed when I was dealing with some stuff in my personal life and I needed an outlet for my depression. I had heard exercise was a good way to relieve stress and improve my mood. I knew if I was going to be successful this time around, I needed to be in a group setting. I definitely needed an accountability partner, someone who would keep me going even when I wanted to skip a session.
That was how I met Adria, the owner of a local training center who became my coach and friend. She never let me unmotivated — when I made excuses, she offered other time options; if I skipped, she’d text, “What’s your workout plan this week?” Her persistence paid off. Before long, I was seeing changes in my body, emotions and attitude. I began to look forward to going to the gym. It felt like the gym was becoming an essential part of my life.
One day, exhausted from running her gym alone, Adria sighed, “I wish you’d get certified as a group fitness instructor because you’re the only one I’d trust with the keys.” I laughed it off, knowing that was impossible. Me? A trainer?
Although she never mentioned it again, I couldn’t get her comment out of my head. It was so encouraging that she thought that much of me — and trusted me — but there was no way! I was completely out of study habits for years. How could I genuinely commit myself to studying for the fitness instructor qualification?
For days following our conversation, every time the thought popped into my head, I heard the words “No way!” But for some reason I couldn’t stop thinking about it. After much internal debate, I realized that I didn’t want to miss this opportunity. Neither did I intend to betray(辜负)Adria’s trust.
