When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art standardized (标准化) exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
4 What did the author think of her drawing before the standardised exam?
A. Discouraging. B. Meaningless. C. Satisfying. D. Empowering.
5. In her 30s, the author ______.
A. avoided oil painting practice B. searched for a painting career
C. took oil painting seriously D. began water colours as a hobby
6. What attracted the author to oil paintings at last?
A. Her ambition. B. Her dream. C. Her grade. D. Her taboo.
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. It never rains but it pours.
C. Dreams are the reflections of realities. D. Strong will can move mountains.
C
In a small village in Zhejiang Province, a group of young craftsmen are breathing new life into an ancient art form — traditional brick carving. This 500-year-old craft, once on the verge of extinction, has found unexpected revival through modern design and e-commerce platforms.
The turning point came in 2018 when 26-year-old Li Wei returned to his hometown after studying architectural design. Combining his knowledge of 3D modeling software with ancestral carving techniques, Li developed innovative patterns featuring both dragons (traditional Chinese symbols) and abstract geometric shapes. His team now uses drone photography to document village architecture, transforming these images into digital blueprints for carvings.
Surprisingly, 60% of their customers come from overseas markets. Through livestream demonstrations on cross-border e-commerce platforms, international buyers can watch artisans turn raw clay into delicate artworks. The most popular item — a moon-shaped wall decoration combining brick carving with LED lighting — has sold over 10,000 units in Europe alone.
Local authorities have supported this revival by establishing a “Brick Culture Experience Center” where visitors try basic carving under master craftsmen’s guidance. The center also runs workshops for school children, ensuring the craft’ s survival for future generations. This blend of tradition and technology offers a promising model for preserving other endangered crafts worldwide.
8. The word “revival” in paragraph 1 most closely means “________”.
A. renewed popularity B. complete transformation
C. sudden disappearance D. commercial success
9. What mainly contributed to the revival of brick carving?
A. Government funding for rural development.
B. Discovery of historical documents about the craft.
C. Growing international demand for Chinese artworks.
D. Combination of modern technology and traditional skills.
10. What can be inferred about the moon-shaped decoration?
A. It uses recycled materials. B. It appeals to foreign buyers.
C. It requires advanced carving skills. D. It was designed by master craftsmen.
11. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A To discuss challenges in craft preservation.
B. To suggest applications for 3D modeling.
C. To compare different traditional crafts.
D. To highlight the project’s social impact.
D
Health organizations such as the UK’s national health services recommend that adults take 10 micrograms, or 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D every day, while the National Institutes of Health advise that most adults take 600 IU, with both bodies cautioning against taking more than 4,000 IU per day. Having too much vitamin D can cause a build-up of calcium (钙) in the blood, leading to symptoms such as nausea and kidney stones.
But Patrick J. LaRiccia at the University of Pennsylvania and his colleagues recently found that a daily dose (一剂) of 5,000 IU may reduce the risk of influenza-like symptoms. They wondered whether this higher-than-recommended dosage may also have other positive effects.
So the team asked 196 adults to take 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 every day for about nine months. The adults, aged 47 on average, were aware of the dose they were having. The researchers also analyzed the data of more than 1,900 people who weren’t given the 5,000 IU daily dose of vitamin D. However, they were free to take vitamin D supplements if they wished. Towards the end of the study, across this group, the average reported dose was 1,318 IU and the average age was 50.
Over 10 months, those on the 5,000 IU dose had a lower risk of being hospitalized due to any cause, and they had to visit the emergency room or be admitted to intensive care less than people in the other group. No participants reported side effects.
However, LaRiccia says the team can’t rule out the age difference as a possible cause of these results, with those in the high-dose group potentially avoiding hospital because they were on average three years younger. The nationalities of people in the two groups also differed, with fewer Hispanic and Latino people in the high-dose group, which may have affected the results.
“The findings are promising, but the study was relatively small and the study period was too short to monitor any long-term safety issues of such a high daily dose of vitamin D,” says JoAnn Manson at Harvard University.
12. How much vitamin D does National Institutes of Health recommend us to take daily?
A. At least 10 IU. B. Less than 400 IU. C. Roughly 600 IU. D. Over 4,000 IU.
13. How did the team carry out the study?
A. By explaining the phenomenon. B. By referring to previous data.
C. By using supporting examples. D. By comparing and analyzing.
14. How many factors may have affected the results according to LaRiccia?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
15. What is JoAnn Manson’s attitude towards the study?
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Favorable. D. Uncertain.

One sunny afternoon, 17-year-old Lily was walking her dog, Max, in the nearby forest. Max, a golden retriever(猎犬), was always full of energy, smelling around and wagging (摇摆) his tail happily. Lily followed Max as he explored the paths, enjoying the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings.
Suddenly, Max stopped and started barking loudly. Lily looked around but saw nothing unusual. She tried to calm Max down, saying, “It’s okay, Max. There’s nothing to worry about.” However, Max refused to listen and kept barking, pulling on the leash (拴狗链) towards the thick bushes.
Curious, Lily decided to follow Max. As they got closer, she heard weak cries for help. Pushing through the bushes, she discovered a young boy trapped in a deep hole. The boy, who looked about 10 years old, was terrified and crying. Lily immediately realized that Max had heard the boy’s cries and led her to him.
Lily tried to comfort the boy, saying, “Don’t worry! I’ll get help right away.” She quickly called the emergency services and stayed with the boy, talking to him to keep his spirits up. Max sat beside her, looking at the boy with gentle eyes as if trying to offer comfort too.
After what felt like ages, the rescue team arrived and safely pulled the boy out of the hole. The boy’s parents soon came, and they were overjoyed to see their son unharmed. They thanked Lily and Max sincerely. “Thank you so much! If it weren’t for you and your dog, who knows what would have happened,” the boy’s mother said, tears of relief in her eyes.
Lily smiled, feeling proud of Max. “It’s all thanks to Max. He’s the real hero,” she said, patting Max on the head. Max wagged his tail, his tongue hanging out happily.

Back home, Lily gave Max a well-deserved treat. She opened a new pack of Max’s favorite chicken snacks and watched as he gobbled them down, his tail wagging so fast. Then, she wrapped him in a warm hug on the soft sofa, saying, “You’re my hero, Max.” Max licked her hand gently. They spent the rest of the evening playing with his favorite tennis ball. The way Max eagerly chased the ball and brought it back, his eyes bright with joy, made Lily realize how lucky she was to have such a loyal friend.
The next day, the boy’s family knocked on Lily’s door. The boy came in and knelt down to pet Max, his eyes shining with gratitude. “Thank you for saving me!” he exclaimed, hugging the dog tightly. The boy’s mother presented Lily with a gift box filled with treats for Max. “Your kindness and Max’s bravery have taught us all a valuable lesson,” her voice filled with emotion. From that day on, the boy visited often, and he and Max became inseparable. Their friendship was a bond that goes beyond words and enriches lives in countless ways.
