Cornell Note-Taking Method
The Cornell method of taking notes was developed by Dr. Walter Pauk of Cornell University in the 1950s. It is a widely used system for noting material from a lecture or reading, and for reviewing and retaining (记住) that material.
Tips for Effective Use:
Self-Quiz Questions: Write simple questions in the cue column to test yourself later.
Summarize Even If Incomplete: Reflect on key points in your own words, even if your notes aren’t perfect.
Color Coding: Use colors to highlight key terms, definitions, and examples. This makes your notes clearer and more engaging.
Next Steps: Add actions you need to take in the summary to keep learning proactive.
Use Your Notes to Study
Concentrate on the left-hand column and summary at the bottom. These contain the most important points you will need for your assignment or exam.
Cover the right side of the page (the note-taking column) with your hand or another sheet of paper. Quiz yourself by giving answers to the potential questions that you included in the left column. Then uncover the right side and check your comprehension.
Reviewing frequently over a longer period of time, rather than cramming before a test, will greatly increase your retention and deepen your understanding of course material. With your effective notes made using the Cornell system, you will be able to study efficiently and with minimal stress.
1. What shared feature do the Cue Column and Summary Column have?
A. Act as decorative sections. B. Concentrate on core concepts.
C. Be completed during the lecture. D. Document detailed lecture content.
2. Which is the correct way to study with Cornell notes?
A. Skip the cue column during revision. B. Rewrite comprehensive notes regularly.
C. Intensive memorization right before exams. D. Cover notes and test recall before checking.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare note-taking methods. B. To illustrate how note-taking evolved.
C. To describe the benefits of color coding. D. To promote an effective note-taking method.

A new documentary, Timeless Qingyi, airs on China Central Television’s documentary channel, offering an intimate look into the life and legacy of Shen Fucun, one of the most revered masters of Peking Opera.
Born into a poor family in Chongqing in 1935, Shen rose to become a distinguished performer of his generation. As a male actor renowned for portraying qingyi, a virtuous and refined female role, he earned the nicknames “Sichuan Mei Lanfang” and “Chongqing Zhang Junqiu”, showing respect to two celebrated masters. Over a career spanning nearly 70 years, he became a national inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage and served as a visiting professor. He passed away in 2021.
The documentary stands out for its meticulous, deeply human approach. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Xu Bei, the three-episode series weaves together archival footage, family recollections and interviews to illuminate both the artist and the man behind the stage. Playwright Luo Huaizhen says the film reveals an artist’s refined aesthetic sensibility and the enduring grace of a true gentleman. Luo also notes that the film goes beyond a conventional account of Shen’s accomplishments, placing his life within social change and opera evolution, moving away from heroic narrative to reveal the experiences of an ordinary individual. By focusing on daily life details and inner world, the documentary creates intimacy, making audiences feel as though they are beside him.
The series highlights Shen’s role as a father and mentor to his daughter Shen Tiemei, vice-chair of China Theatre Association, capturing a cross-generational artistic dialogue. Shen Tiemei recalls his unwavering commitment to creative transformation and innovative development of Peking Opera, describing him as a mirror who inspired her to refine her craft. She is determined to carry forward his artistic vision, hoping to pass on his ideas to younger performers and devote herself to preserving traditional Chinese opera.
4. According to the passage, Shen Fucun in his early life.
A. has a wealthy childhood B. acted as a male character in the play
C. was influenced by Mei and Zhang D. was well-known throughout the world
5. What makes the documentary unique according to the passage?
A. It only covers Shen’s major stage achievements
B. It tells Shen’s story in a heroic and grand style.
C. It focuses on Shen’s personal emotion and experience.
D. It mainly relies on interviews with his daughter.
6. What did Shen Fucun leave to his daughter?
A. His personal fortune. B. His academic reputation.
C. His spiritual treasure. D. His unique skills of acting.
7. What message does this passage convey?
A. All that glitters is not gold. B. Art is long, life is short.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Good teachers carry culture’s flame.

A “memory breakdown” is often said to be the major cognitive problem of our time. In a recent piece in The Chronicle Review, Daniel Mercer argued that “students can’t remember even simple facts without checking their phones”, and many schools have quietly lowered expectations for memorizing dates, formulas and vocabulary.
Yet complaints about weak memory are hardly new. In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students’ power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. Over the decades, similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms.
Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. Many students now treat their phones as an “external brain”, much as earlier generations treated the family bookshelf. At the same time, the use of digital calendars, search engines and cloud storage continue to rise. This points to a change not in whether people can remember, but in what they believe is worth remembering. “Students can still memorize,” Mercer wrote. “They’re just deciding to memorize different things.”
This leads to a deeper question: What kind of memory do we truly need, and why? Psychologists often distinguish between recall — producing information with no help — and recognition, which is using clues to find what we once knew. In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources.
Could today’s young people be developing useful memory strategies that we have not yet learned to value? What about their skill at searching huge databases in seconds, or at linking ideas across videos, chats and online documents? These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways.
8. What does the underlined word “denunciations” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Origins. B. Reminders. C. Criticisms. D. Indicators.
9. What does the growing use of digital tools suggest according to Mercer?
A. People no longer need to train their memory.
B. People are changing the way they use their memory.
C. Schools are forcing students to rely on external devices.
D. Modern technology is destroying traditional learning tools.
10. Why does the author mention the “change blindness” experiments?
A. To display that people are easily fooled by visual tricks.
B. To prove that using outside cues can be a reasonable strategy.
C. To demonstrate that face recognition is more important than tasks.
D. To illustrate that most memories are formed without our awareness.
11. What will probably be discussed next?
A. Challenges facing the young generation.
B. More valuable lessons taught by history.
C. Ways to support memory in the digital age.
D. Effects of relying on external memory tools.

Beneath the ocean’s surface lies a secret world of light. While bioluminescence — the ability of living things to produce their own light — has long interested scientists, a lesser-known phenomenon called bio-fluorescence (生物荧光) is now stealing the spotlight.
Bio-fluorescence occurs when sea animals absorb light at one wavelength and send it out at another, creating vivid lights in colors like green, red, or orange. Unlike bioluminescence, which produces light through chemical reactions, bio-fluorescence depends on absorbing light from outside to glow. This natural light show is not just for beauty; it serves critical survival functions.
In the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) of the Pacific, researchers observed corals sending out green under blue light. “It’s a dance of partnership guided by light,” explains marine biologist Dr. Kenji Nakamura. Without this interaction, coral bleaching (白化) — a major threat to coral ecosystems — would speed up.
Another wonder comes from the Hawaiian bobtail squid When threatened by hunters, it releases a cloud of bio-fluorescent ink. The sudden burst of light confuses attackers, buying the squid precious seconds to escape. Dr. Emily Carter who led the study notes, “This is evolution’s version of a smoke screen — but far more shining.”
The discovery of GFP — green fluorescent protein (绿色荧光蛋白) — in jellyfish in 1962 revolutionized science. Researchers realized GFP could be used to mark specific cells, making invisible processes visible. Today, it lights up nerve cells in brain studies, helping map out connections in diseases like Alzheimer’s. “GFP is a window into the brain’s hidden workings,” says brain scientist Dr. Maria Gonzalez.
Scientists are now copying bio-fluorescence to develop sustainable technologies. For example, fluorescent proteins inspire energy-efficient LED lighting, and bio-fluorescent markers could improve medical imaging. “Nature’s designs are blueprints for human innovation,” says materials scientist Dr. Raj Patel.
Yet mysteries remain. Over 200 species of bio-fluorescent fish were recently discovered, their purposes still unclear. As submarines dive deeper, each expedition reveals new players in this beautiful underwater light show, proving that the ocean’s depths still guard ancient secrets.
12. How is bio-fluorescence different from bioluminescence?
A. It is drawing less attention. B. It produces brighter lights.
C. It needs an outside light source. D. It makes better use of chemical reactions.
13. What can we learn about the examples in paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. They both describe light-based hunting methods.
B. They both explain the formation of a close partnership.
C. They both highlight potential threats to the environment.
D. They both show survival functions of bio-fluorescence.
14. What is the main use of GFP in science?
A. To protect corals from bleaching. B. To create more efficient LED lights.
C. To treat the disease of Alzheimer’s. D. To visualize cells for better observation.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Bio-fluorescence: Nature’s Hidden Light Show
B. Bio-fluorescence: Nature’s Display of Beauty
C. Bioluminescence: Ocean’s Ancient Magic Power
D. Bioluminescence: Colourful Window into Ocean Secret

How to handle criticism in a healthy way
Criticism is a universal experience that can trigger (引发) feelings such as anger, shame, or fear. While criticism can be taken as hurtful, it can also be viewed in a positive way. ____16____ Keeping a healthy attitude will not only help you not get depressed by criticism, but it can also help you move forward in life. Here’s how you should seek to handle constructive criticism and how you can use it to your advantage.
Stop your first reaction. Feeling “attacked” may trigger a fight-flight-or-freeze response. Take a breath and cool off to allow logic to step in. Having a stock comment in your pocket, such as, “That’s an interesting viewpoint,” can lessen the initial emotional impact. If you have received heavy criticism, then feel free to ask for more time to process it. ____17____
Embrace it as a learning opportunity. We all make mistakes. As we go through life, we have plenty of opportunities to learn and improve. However, accepting criticism positively does not mean shutting yourself off emotionally. ____18____ Accept the fact that the other person’s comments may have hurt you. Once you have acknowledged it, you can allow yourself to use their words toward the process of self-improvement.
____19____ If criticism is feedback, it’s important to understand what that feedback actually is. What is the true intention of the criticism? For instance, if your boss is giving you feed back on a mistake you made, he’s probably trying to convey how you can fix and avoid the mistake in the future. Try to understand what your critic is saying and seek clarification if you need to.
Thank those offering the criticism. Sometimes they’re coming from a place of wanting to help you. That takes courage, and is a very generous thing. Even when they’re not trying to be helpful, they’ve taken the time to respond to you. ____20____ Causing a reaction means you’ve done something interesting — and for that, you should be thankful.
A. Respond calmly.
B. Practice active listening.
C. It is quite normal to feel hurt.
D. It can be an opportunity to improve.
E. Getting a response is better than absolute silence.
F. This is a good time to clarify any misunderstandings.
G. This is better than responding in the heat of the moment.

Mrs. Thompson often reminded her daughter, Amy, that helping with housework was not only a responsibility, but also a way of showing care for the family. But to Amy, household chores were a tiresome burden and a waste of her precious time. Every time her mother asked her to wash the dishes after dinner, Amy would protest, “It’s unfair! Why should I have to do the dishes?” Usually, Mrs. Thompson would sigh and do it herself.
One Monday evening, as Amy got up from the table, Mrs. Thompson began coughing violently and her face grew very pale. “I’m not feeling well,” she said and went to her bedroom without even mentioning the dishes.
Amy was about to leave the dirty plates in the sink as usual, but something stopped her. She remembered her mother’s tired eyes and weak voice, and it struck her how tired her mother had looked lately — doing a demanding job and taking care of the household all by herself.
Quietly, Amy walked her mother to her room, and then returned to the kitchen. She stared at the mountain of dishes, took a deep breath, and rolled up her sleeves. Just as she was drying the last plate, she heard a gentle voice from behind.
“Amy?” Mrs. Thompson, who was standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with surprise and warmth, said very gently.
Amy turned around and, feeling a little embarrassed, she mumbled, “Well... Since you’re not feeling well, I thought I’d help out tonight.”
“Thank you, sweetheart,” Mrs. Thompson said very gently. “That means a lot to me.” That night, as Amy lay in bed, she couldn’t stop thinking about the gentleness in her mother’s voice.
“Maybe, Mom was right,” Amy thought. “Doing housework isn’t just a chore. It is a way to show love.”

C
C 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据上文“In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students' power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. (19世纪末,英国教育家亨利·拉瑟姆指责廉价印刷书籍会摧毁学生的记忆力,因为他们不再需要将长篇段落记在脑海中。)”可知,此处blamed表示批评、指责,下文“similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms(每当有新工具进入课堂时,类似的denunciations就会再次出现)”中similar说明denunciations与上文blamed含义相近。
根据第三段“Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. (Mercer认为,与其说是简单的能力丧失,不如说我们正在目睹人们选择使用记忆的方式发生了转变。)”以及“Students can still memorize. They're just deciding to memorize different things. (学生仍然能够记忆。他们只是决定记住不同的东西。)”可知,Mercer认为数字工具的日益使用表明人们正在改变使用记忆的方式,而非丧失记忆能力。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources. (在经典的 “变化盲视” 实验中,人们无法察觉正在交谈的陌生人已经被悄悄换成了另一个人,因为他们的注意力集中在任务上,而非对方的面孔。这表明依赖外部提示和语境并不总是一种弱点;它可能反映了一种管理有限心理资源的不同方式。)”可知,作者提及“变化盲视”实验是为了证明使用外部线索可以是一种合理的策略,而非弱点。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways. (这些新的记忆习惯促使我们重新思考——考虑到过去“记忆衰退”的历史——我们如何以更灵活、更具前瞻性的方式理解和支持人类记忆。)”可知,文章结尾提出了以灵活、前瞻性方式理解和支持记忆的方向,接下来最可能讨论的是在数字时代支持记忆的具体方式。
D
C 13. D 14. D 15. A

根据第二段“Unlike bioluminescence, which produces light through chemical reactions, bio-fluorescence depends on absorbing light from outside to glow.(与通过化学反应产生光的生物发光不同,生物荧光依赖于吸收外界的光来发光。)”
根据第三段“Without this interaction, coral bleaching (白化) — a major threat to coral ecosystems — would speed up.(如果没有这种相互作用,珊瑚白化 —— 珊瑚生态系统面临的一个重大威胁 —— 将会加速。)”可知,第三段以珊瑚礁为例,说明了珊瑚的生物荧光能减缓白化速度;根据第四段“When threatened by hunters, it releases a cloud of bio-fluorescent ink. The sudden burst of light confuses attackers, buying the squid precious seconds to escape.(当受到猎人的威胁时,它会释放出一团生物荧光墨汁。突然迸发的亮光会迷惑攻击者,为乌贼争取宝贵的几秒钟时间来逃跑。)”可知,第四段以短尾乌贼为例,介绍了它的生物荧光墨水能迷惑捕食者。结合第二段“This natural light show is not just for beauty; it serves critical survival functions.(这种自然的灯光秀不仅仅是为了美观;它还具有重要的生存功能。)”
根据第五段“Researchers realized GFP could be used to mark specific cells, making invisible processes visible. Today, it lights up nerve cells in brain studies, helping map out connections in diseases like Alzheimer’s.(研究人员意识到绿色荧光蛋白可以用来标记特定细胞,使看不见的过程变得可见。如今,它在大脑研究中照亮神经细胞,帮助绘制阿尔茨海默病等疾病中的神经连接。)”可知,GFP在科学中的主要用途是标记细胞使其可视化,便于观察研究。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Beneath the ocean’s surface lies a secret world of light. (海洋表面之下隐藏着一个秘密的光世界)”和最后一段“each expedition reveals new players in this beautiful underwater light show”(每次探险都揭示了这场美丽的水下灯光秀中的新角色)”及文章内容可知,全文围绕“生物荧光”展开,介绍了其原理、生存功能、科学应用和未解之谜,故“生物荧光:大自然隐藏的灯光秀”最能概括全文内容。

D 17. G 18. C 19. B 20. E

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Before sleeping, Amy set the clock 40 minutes earlier. The next morning, Amy sprang out of bed as soon as the alarm rang and tiptoed into the kitchen. She boiled eggs and made toasts. She even squeezed fresh orange juice on the bread. When her mother came to the kitchen, Amy said cheerfully, “Surprise, Mom! I find I am very good at preparing breakfast! Now, you could rest a bit more until you’re fully recovered.”
As time went on, Amy’s attitude to household work began to change. She no longer saw it as a duty but a way to contribute to the family. She took on more tasks — sweeping the floors, tidying the living room, and even joining her mother in the garden on weekends. Mrs. Thompson was overjoyed by the change. What’s more, Amy discovered that working side by side with her mother had become their special time to talk and bond — and their relationship grew closer than ever.
