Passage 1
Chen Zhe is a 36-year-old who was born in Anji county in Zhejiang Province. He never imagined that one day he would return to his hometown to start a business that makes use of classic cartoon characters from the films produced by the Shanghai Animation (动画) Film Studio (电影制片厂).
Chen’s coffee shop Mei@Yucun opened in March in Anji’s Yucun village. A number of 1.7-meter-high models of cartoon characters from cartoons like The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven and the Calabash Brothers, stand in front of the store. Models of cartoon characters also fill the coffee shop, which sells around 100 cultural and creative products based on the cartoons. “The characters are from classic cartoons made by the studio. It may be their debut in a countryside coffee shop.” he said.
In 2022, Yucun village started the international partners program to encourage young people to take part in village life. Around 1, 100 young people have taken part in the program, introducing new forms of business. In 2022, Yucun village made 13 million yuan in total.
“As more people began to visit Yucun village, I decided to open a coffee shop here at first,” said Chen. “Then the international partners program inspired me. I wanted to bring coffee and cartoon characters to the village, to add color and energy to the countryside. Because of their love of Chinese cartoons, people’s attention is caught easily. They are reminded of their childhood, when they could enjoy cartoons and be happy.”
Chen plans to encourage teams of young cartoon artists to live in Yucun village and create more products. He also plans to cover the outside walls of buildings with cartoon characters, to make the countryside more beautiful and creative.

Passage 2
What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a very common problem among young teenagers: Most of them have little idea about their career plans as there is too little help from school or family.
To offer teenagers helpful advice on career, the students from Tianjin TEDA No. 1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi (点职成诗)”. “Our survey shows that 72% of students want to know more about different jobs. Being doctors is one of the best jobs,” said Wang Xinran, 16, the project leader.
According to students’ needs, the team interviewed 32 excellent workers with different jobs and put their interviews on the Internet. These workers shared true stories behind each job, allowing students to learn about the jobs further.
“We also invited the workers to give speeches in our school. In this way, students could have a chance to talk to them face to face,” said Wang.
Team member Lu Jinyan said his most impressive interview was with a photographer. “I thought being a photographer was cool and romantic in the past. But now I realize that they need to deal with lots of problems, such as a sudden change of weather or broken cameras. They also need to communicate with different people. This is not easy.”
But the project doesn’t mean to disappoint (使失望) students by telling them the truth. “We want to show the workers’ love and spirit of never giving up instead of the bad sides,” said group member Zhao Yajie. “The project’s name means to turn a career into a poem. We believe working is not just about bread and butter. It should be like a poem, full of love and beauty. And we hope our project can let students know that.”

(2021·四川泸州·中考真题)In a small village, there was a middle-aged postman, who just turned 20 years old and started delivering (投递) all kinds of happy or sad stories to each home day after day for 50 kilometers. 20 years flew by, and so many changes took place, but the road from the post office to the village always hadn’t had any trees and nothing but the flying dust (尘土) could be seen.
“How long shall I go along this lonely road?”
As soon as he thought he must spend his life riding the bike on the dusty road with no flowers or trees, he felt somewhat sorry.
One day, when he finished delivering the letters and was ready to return, he happened to pass by a flower shop.“Right, that’s it!” He walked into the shop, bought a handful of wild flower seeds (种子), and from the next day on put these seeds along the roadside. Thus, after one day, two days, one month, two months... he always kept putting the wild flower seeds along the roadside.
Before long, on the lonely road, where he had come and gone for 20 years, grew up a lot of little flowers, in all seasons endlessly.

Livestream assistance is getting popular
I like watching livestreams (直播) online and I’d like to learn about the job of a livestream assistant (直播中控).
Yan Zihan, 14, Guangdong
I worked as a livestream assistant in 2023. It’s a job that has emerged (兴起) in recent years. I think it is an interesting job.
Wang Furong, 22, Sichuan
Yan: What did you need to do as a livestream assistant?
Wang: The livestreams were usually from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am. At around 4:30 pm, I had to clean the room and set up things like the lights. During the livestream, I had to answer questions from the people watching it. I also needed to tell the livestreamer if she forgot to say some of the selling points. I would show a link (链接) to the product on the screen and keep an eye on the information backstage (在后台). Most of the time, people couldn’t see me but could hear my voice.
Yan: Is this job hard?
Wang: This job needs you to be able to make changes and answer questions quickly. Livestreamers have their own styles. Some are relaxed while others are excited. We need to help them in a way that suits (适合) their style. For example, if a livestreamer wants people to buy something, then I need to say things like, “It’s nearly sold out.”
Not being afraid of the camera and liking to talk are also important. Sometimes we need to take the livestreamer’s place if he or she is tired. If we are good at it, we can even become livestreamers ourselves.
Yan: What are the pros and cons (利弊) of this job?
Wang: It’s not an easy job. Losing my voice was quite common after eight hours of working and talking. Going home at 2:00 am by myself also made me feel sad sometimes. Now, when I’m talking to my family and friends, I can’t help but say “yes” or “that’s right”. Those are things I often said during livestreams.
However, this job’s schedule worked for me. I go to bed very late anyway, so I think it’s not bad to make good use of the time at night to do some work.
