But when 13-year-old Emmie Tallent who has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) didn’t make her school’s cheer squad (啦啦队), she responded in the most impressive way — she cheered anyway. Emmie Tallent, agirl with firm determination, took to the sidelines while her school’s cheer squad performed. She matched the entire routine, moving for moving, in a black dress and tie-dyed shoes. Her sister, Sydnee, recorded this moment on video, and it’s now capturing hearts worldwide. The video, with over 3 million views and 87,000 likes, shows Emmie facing the official squad and performing the routine alongside them. Her performance is nothing short of inspiring. “Girl didn’t make the cheer team, but she didn’t care,” Sydnee wrote, admiring Emmie’s confidence. “Emmie may not be on the cheer team this time, but I’m sure her talent and spirit will shine through somewhere in the future,” Sydnee said with a smile. “Right now, she’s satisfied and happy doing what she loves. Thank you all for supporting her. I want to show the world Emmie’s joy from pursuing what she likes and the beauty of diversity.” The team did not have a lot of spots and even neurotypical (神经正常的) girls who were much better than Emmie didn’t make it to join it. Emmie’s school was giving Emmie help and kept encouraging her, but there are hard decisions that have to be made sometimes. Though Emmie didn’t make the squad, she wasn’t feeling upset at home, and continued to follow cheer squad’s routines and moves to please herself and spread joy to others, even if from the sidelines. In the face of rejection, this tough 13-year-old chose to dance rather than sit by and let it define her, inspiring us all to embrace our uniqueness and find joy in every moment. 4. Prepare for the worst. D. Youth gives us light. C The pleasure people get from a piece of music has been linked to its effects on our emotional responses and ability to form social connections. The degree of enjoyment differs from person to person, but little is known about why. To see if genetics (遗传学) can account for it, Giacomo Bignardi at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands and his colleagues conducted a new study. The researchers looked at more than 9,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. About 3,400 were identical (同卵的) and 5,600 non-identical. The former share the same genome (基因组), while non-identical twins share only half their genomes, which enabled the researchers to determine the effects of genes through comparison. Besides, all the twins in the study were raised in the same households and so grew up with similar environmental influences. This made it easier to sort out genetic contributions. The researchers got the twins to complete the Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire, which focused on how much pleasure they get from music. For example, they were asked the extent to which they agreed with statements such as “when I share music with someone I feel a special connection with that person” and “in my free time I hardly listen to music”. The result showed that genes seem to play a significant role in influencing how much pleasure music brings, with the identical twins being more than twice as similar in this feature as the non-identical ones. “While it’s fairly understandable that musical ability might have a genetic basis, which provides an easy explanation for why some people seem to have a talent for music, it’s obscure that the degree of pleasure from listening to music is influenced by genes, so it is inspiring that the study finds this effect,” says Peter Harrison at the University of Cambridge. However, Nick Collins at Durham University, UK thinks differently. “Certain musical abilities and preferences may be influenced by genetics, but there are a large number of cultural elements in music development that are not addressed by genetics alone,” he says. 8. What can we learn from paragraph 2? A. How twins contribute to the progress of genetic research. B. Why the researchers chose the twins as research subjects. C. What makes the new study different from previous ones. D. What inspired the researchers to conduct the new study. 9. What is the finding of the new study? A. The secret of musical talent lies in our genes. B. Our genes determine what kind of music we like. C. Our genes can influence how much we enjoy music. D. The pleasure that different people get from music varies greatly. 10. Which can best replace the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 4? A. easy to conclude. B. reasonable to assume. C. impossible to prove. D. difficult to see. 11. What is Nick Collins’ attitude towards the research finding? A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned. Using needles to help life’s energy flow For thousands of years, the Chinese have relieved pain and cured disease through acupuncture (针灸). 4. What do we know about Emmie from the first two paragraphs? A. She refused to give up performing. B. She used to be looked down upon. C. She showed a special talent for cheerleading. D. Her performance is nothing short of inspiring.(这段视频有超过300万的点击量和87000个赞,埃米在视频中面对官方球队,和他们一起表演。 故选A项。 根据第三段““Emmie may not be on the cheer team this time, but I’m sure her talent and spirit will shine through somewhere in the future,” Sydnee said with a smile. “Right now, she’s satisfied and happy doing what she loves. Thank you all for supporting her. A How twins contribute to the progress of genetic research. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一项关于基因对人们从音乐中获得快乐的影响的研究。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“The researchers looked at more than 9,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. This made it easier to sort out genetic contributions.(研究人员观察了瑞典双胞胎登记处的9000多名双胞胎。 根据第三段“The result showed that genes seem to play a significant role in influencing how much pleasure music brings, with the identical twins being more than twice as similar in this feature as the non-identical ones.(结果表明,基因似乎在影响音乐带来的快乐程度方面发挥着重要作用,同卵双胞胎在这一特征上的相似性是非同卵双胞胎的两倍多。)”可知,这项新研究的发现是我们的基因可以影响我们从音乐中获得多少快乐。故选C。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“While it’s fairly understandable that musical ability might have a genetic basis, which provides an easy explanation for why some people seem to have a talent for music.(虽然音乐能力可能有遗传基础是相当容易理解的,这为为什么有些人似乎有音乐天赋提供了一个简单的解释。)可知,“obscure”所在的部分与上文是转折关系,上文说音乐能力有遗传基础是容易理解的,那么可推测出“obscure”的意思应该是“不容易看出”或“难以察觉”。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Certain musical abilities and preferences may be influenced by genetics, but there are a large number of cultural elements in music development that are not addressed by genetics alone.(某些音乐能力和偏好可能受到遗传学的影响,但在音乐发展中存在大量文化元素,这些元素并非仅由遗传学所能解释。)”可知,Nick Collins认为这项研究结果有疑点,即他对此持怀疑态度。故选B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Using needles to help life’s energy flow For thousands of years, the Chinese have relieved pain and cured disease through acupuncture (针灸). (运用了动名词作宾语) 第二节 读后续写(满分25分) 53. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 My husband and I were out shopping on a cold windy day. On the way out of the parking lot, we saw a man standing on the grass, holding a sign. The sign didn’t say anything about needing money or food, but simply said, “Help would be appreciated (感激)!” My husband wanted to give him some money, but he just had credit cards with him, so he picked up a bag of fast food and gave it to the man. But thinking about what we gave wouldn’t be enough, we parked and asked him to go to a restaurant with us. He looked at us for a moment as if we were crazy, but then followed us. The man told us that he was trying to save money for some candles that can warm him up, not for food that day. My heart broke. I explained that it was our treat and he could pick out anything he wanted from the menu. He said he always wanted to try a double cheeseburger, but had never got the chance. So we bought him a double cheeseburger and a cup of hot coffee. The total was around nine dollars. It was a piece of cake for us, but the world to him. He said he had lost his flat after losing his job. Since then he’d lived in a tent because the shelters were full and he wanted to leave room for women and children. Then, he began to enjoy the delicious meal. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 After he finished eating, we went to a store and bought some candles for him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One day, my husband and I went to a fast-food restaurant to treat ourselves. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: After he finished eating, we went to a store and bought some candles for him. As he held the candles in his hands, he expressed his gratitude to us sincerely. We could sense a glimmer of hope in his eyes, a belief that things might improve for him. Then we said goodbye. We saw that man in the parking lot a couple more times. We would give him a few dollars if we had any cash with us. Then one day, he just wasn’t there. A year passed and we never met again. One day, my husband and I went to a fast-food restaurant to treat ourselves. We heard a voice say “hi” while we were looking up at the menu. It was that man. He had been working there for eight months. He was preparing to get a flat, too. So happy for him! We talked about how his life was going before there was a line behind us. Then I said we should probably pick something and get out of the way. He said, “I’ll treat you.” He set down a tray in front of us, with double cheeseburgers and hot coffee. At that moment, I realized that sometimes, all it takes is a genuine desire to help, even in the smallest ways, to make a positive impact on someone’s life. 词汇激活 行为类 ①表达:express/convey/articulate/utter ②感觉到:sense/feel/discern/recognize ③给:give/offer/provide ④过去:pass/go by/fly/elapse ⑤谈论:talk about/discuss/speak about ⑥意识到:realize/become aware of/understand ⑦帮助:help/assist/aid/do sb. a favor 情绪类 ①感激:gratitude/thanks/gratefulness ②高兴的:happy/delighted/glad 【点睛】[高分句型1] We could sense a glimmer of hope in his eyes, a belief that things might improve for him. (连接词that引导名词性从句作belief的同位语) [高分句型2] We would give him a few dollars if we had any cash with us. (从属连词if引导条件状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
