Beating brain fog Do you ever wake up with a fuzzy feeling in your head, you can't concentrate on anything, or find your memory just isn't working as it should? You're not alone. 39% of British people said they suffer brain fog on a regular basis in a FutureYou Cambridge study. But why do we get brain fog, and can we do anything to prevent it? The technical word for brain fog is cognitive impairment. When you have it, you can't think as clearly as you normally can – just as if your brain was actually full of fog. Dr Brennan, a neuroscientist and author, says "Brain fog is different to these short-term disruptions, because it is persistent, occurs regularly and can interfere with the quality of your life, your relationships, and your work". The reality is that no-one knows exactly what causes it, though theories include chemical or blood flow changes in the brain, and low-level inflammation. What we do know are factors that make it worse. Fatigue, for example, is a key contributor to brain fog, making it hard to stay focused. This is because sleep deficiency can change activity in some parts of the brain, which means processing and recalling detail becomes harder. Pain and anxiety can also contribute to it – they interfere with cognitive speed because they are distracting. There are also medical conditions that can make it worse, like long Covid or autoimmune conditions like lupus disease. So, if you're suffering from brain fog, what can you do to fix it? One thing you can do is avoid ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Dr Megan Rossi, the founder of The Gut Health Doctor, told the BBC that "UPFs are often low in essential nutrients like magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids and iron, all of which are crucial for brain function and mental clarity". Therefore, we should pack our diets with nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, vegetables and healthy fats. Blueberries are particularly rich in polyphenols and have been shown to improve cognitive function and memory in clinical trials. Hydration is also very important. So, if you feel a bit foggy, try to get more sleep and consider making some changes to your diet. 1.What physiological change is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of brain fog? A. Chemical changes in the brain B. Reduced blood flow C. Low-grade inflammation D. Hormonal imbalance 2. Which group would most likely experience worsened brain fog symptoms according to the text? A. Office workers with regular sleep patterns B. Long COVID patients with autoimmune conditions C. Athletes maintaining balanced diets D. Students avoiding processed foods 3.What is the primary purpose of mentioning blueberries in the article? A. To illustrate a specific nutrient-rich food example B. To promote a particular brand of supplements C. To compare fruits and vegetables D. To discuss seasonal food choices 4.Which conclusion best aligns with the article's overall message about brain fog management? A. Medical intervention is the only effective solution B. A combination of lifestyle adjustments shows promise C. Brain fog is an inevitable part of aging D. Dietary changes alone can completely eliminate symptoms Understanding Brain Fog Brain fog, (1)______ (know) technically as cognitive impairment, affects millions worldwide. People experiencing it often struggle with concentration and memory, as if their brains (2)______ (fill) with thick fog. Researchers believe several factors may contribute (3)______ this condition. Poor sleep quality, for instance, can disrupt brain function, making (4)______ harder to process information. Additionally, chronic stress triggers chemical changes in the brain that may worsen symptoms. Diet also plays (5)______ important role. Ultra-processed foods, (6)______ are often low in essential nutrients, fail to support optimal brain performance. (7)______ (eat) more whole grains, vegetables, and healthy fats can help improve mental clarity. (8)______ (interest), a 2022 study found that proper hydration enhances cognitive abilities by nearly 30%. Therefore, (9)______ you frequently experience brain fog, drinking enough water should be your first step before (10)______ (consider) other solutions. 1. What percentage of British people reported experiencing brain fog regularly, according to the FutureYou Cambridge study? 2. How does Dr. Brennan distinguish brain fog from short-term cognitive disruptions? Provide two key characteristics. 3. List three possible physiological explanations mentioned in the text for what might cause brain fog. 4. Explain the connection between sleep deficiency and impaired cognitive function, as described in the passage. 5. Besides fatigue, name two other factors that contribute to brain fog by reducing cognitive speed, and explain how they do so. 2.B 第三段末提到"medical conditions like long Covid or autoimmune conditions"会加重脑雾。 A项"only"和D项"alone"过于绝对,C项与年龄无关。 二、语法填空 known (非谓语动词,过去分词作后置定语) were filled (虚拟语气,as if从句用过去式表示假设) to (contribute to固定搭配) it (形式宾语,指代to process information) an (important以元音开头,用an) which (非限制性定语从句,指代foods) Eating (动名词作主语) Interestingly (副词作状语,修饰整个句子) if/when (条件/时间状语从句引导词) considering (before为介词,后接动名词) 3、 任务型阅读 1.39% of British people reported experiencing brain fog regularly according to the study. 2.Dr. Brennan distinguishes brain fog by its:Persistence (it lasts over time)、Regular occurrence、Interference with quality of life (unlike short-term disruptions) 3.Three possible physiological explanations for brain fog:Chemical changes in the brain、Blood flow changes in the brain、Low-level inflammation 4.Sleep deficiency alters activity in some brain regions, making it harder to:Process information、Recall details、Maintain focus 5.Two other contributing factors:Pain: Distracts the mind and slows cognitive processingAnxiety: Consumes mental resources needed for clear thinking
