教学过程
一、开场(约 2 分钟)
T: Good afternoon, dear students! In the previous classes of Unit 2 “Morals and Virtues”, we have learned about many remarkable figures. Remember Lin Qiaozhi, the “Mother of Ten Thousand Babies”? She dedicated her life to the health of women and children, showing great love and responsibility. And we also talked about common people performing acts of kindness. Now, today, we are going to explore something that has had a profound impact on Chinese culture for thousands of years in our “Video Time”. We will focus on the thoughts of an ancient Chinese sage. Can you guess who it might be? Any ideas? Raise your hands!
二、导入(约 3 分钟)
T: Right! It's Confucius. Confucius is one of the most respected and influential philosophers in Chinese history. He is often referred to as the “Saint”. So, class, before we watch the video, let's think about what you already know about Confucius. What kind of person do you think he was? What were his main ideas? (Pause for students to answer)
Some of you mentioned that he was a great teacher. Exactly! He had a lot of disciples and his teachings were passed down through generations. And someone said his ideas were about how to be a good person and how to get along with others. That's very true. Now, we are going to learn more about his thoughts, especially the concept of “Ren” in the following video.
三、浏览视频简介及预测(约 4 分钟)
T: First, let's look at the introduction of this video together. It says that this video will introduce the significance of Confucianism in Chinese culture and interpret the connotation of “Ren” and its position in Confucian thought. Now, turn to the “Before You Watch” part on your textbooks. Let's discuss the first question: What is the significance of Ren? (Pause for students to discuss in pairs and then share their thoughts)
Student A, what do you think?
SA: Maybe “Ren” helps people to be kind to each other.
T: That's a great thought. And for the second question: What do you expect to see in the video? Any predictions?
Student B?
SB: I think we might see some stories about Confucius teaching his disciples about “Ren”.
T: Good guess. Now, let's fill in the blanks in this part according to our understanding. (Guide students to fill in the blanks)
四、第一次观看视频(约 5 分钟)
T: Alright, class. Now, let's watch the video for the first time. While watching, please pay attention to the historical background of Confucianism, its core content, and Confucius' views on “Ren”. Try to verify the answers we guessed in the “Before You Watch” part. Are you ready? Here we go! (Play the video)
五、检查答案及初步理解(约 3 分钟)
T: OK, the video has ended. Let's check the answers in the “Before You Watch” part. For the first blank, many of you filled in that Confucian thought has been an important part of Chinese culture for more than two thousand years. That's correct. Confucius lived around 2,500 years ago, and his ideas have been passed down and developed ever since.
For the second blank, his teachings are all about the most basic values of life, such as kindness, righteousness, respect, wisdom, and faith.
And for the third blank, Confucius thought that “Ren” was the most important moral principle. Now, let's briefly talk about what you got from this first viewing. What's your general impression of Confucianism and “Ren” so far?
Student C?
SC: I learned that Confucianism has influenced China for a long time and “Ren” seems to be very important for people to be good.
T: Great summary. Now, let's dig deeper in the next viewing.
六、第二次观看视频(约 6 分钟)
T: Now, let's look at Activity 2 in the “While You Watch” part. We will watch the video again. This time, circle the correct words according to what you hear and see in the video. Be careful with the details. Let's start. (Play the video again)
七、讲解视频细节(约 8 分钟)
T: Let's check the answers together. In the first sentence, it should be “Confucian thought is still greatly valued in China and in other East/Southeast Asian countries.” Many countries in East and Southeast Asia, like Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, have been influenced by Confucianism.
For the second one, “If students really understood Confucian ideas, it could change society/their lives.” Both are possible answers. Understanding Confucian ideas can not only improve individuals but also have a positive impact on society as a whole.
In the third sentence, “In English, many different words can be used to translate Confucius’s highest moral principle.” Because “Ren” has a very rich meaning and it's hard to find an exact equivalent in English. Words like “benevolence”, “kindness”, “humanity” can all be used to describe it to some extent.
For the fourth one, “Mencius explained this principle as ‘loving one’s parents, loving people, loving everything in the world’.” Mencius was an important Confucian philosopher who further developed the concept of “Ren”.
And the last one, “Confucius taught Zigong that the one single concept to take as a guide for all actions in life is fairness.” This shows that “Ren” is related to fairness and treating others equally.
Now, let's take a closer look at the interpretation of “Ren” in the video. The video said that from the shape of the Chinese character “仁”, it consists of a person and the number two, indicating relationships between individuals. And experts in the video said that “Ren” represents the heart of Confucius' thought. It's about how to become a better person, how to get along with others, and how to live a happy and meaningful life. For example, the quote from Mencius “亲亲而仁民,仁民而爱物。” means that people of virtue love and care for their loved ones first, then they are kind to other people, and finally, they treasure everything on earth. Another quote “己所不欲,勿施于人。” from “The Analects” also reflects the idea of “Ren”. It means that whatever you don't like done to yourself, don't do it to others. Can you think of some examples in our daily lives that reflect the concept of “Ren”?
Student D?
SD: When we share our food with a hungry classmate, that's being kind, like “Ren”.
T: Exactly! That's a great example of showing kindness, which is part of “Ren”. Any other examples?
Student E?
SE: When we help an old man cross the street, we are being kind and showing respect, just like what “Ren” teaches.
T: Very good. These small acts of kindness and respect are manifestations of the concept of “Ren”.
八、小组讨论(约 10 分钟)
T: Now, let's divide into groups of four and discuss the following questions: How can Confucian ideas, especially the concept of “Ren”, guide our study and daily life? And how can we spread these traditional Chinese values? You have 10 minutes to discuss. I will walk around and join your discussions. (Students start to discuss, and the teacher moves around the classroom, listening and giving guidance)
九、小组汇报(约 10 分钟)
T: Time's up. Let's start with Group 1. Please share your ideas.
Group 1 representative: In our study, the concept of “Ren” can teach us to be kind to our classmates. For example, when someone doesn't understand a question, we should patiently explain it instead of laughing at them. In daily life, we can show “Ren” by respecting our parents and elders. To spread these values, we can organize school activities, like a speech contest about Confucianism.
T: That's a very comprehensive answer. Group 2, what do you think?
Group 2 representative: We think in study, “Ren” can encourage us to study hard to become better people in the future to contribute to society. In daily life, we can be more understanding and forgiving towards others. As for spreading, we can make short videos about Confucian stories and post them online.
T: Great ideas, especially the one about making short videos, which is very creative. Group 3?
Group 3 representative: “Ren” can help us build good relationships with teachers and classmates. We should be polite and helpful. In daily life, we can participate in volunteer activities to show kindness. We can also set up a Confucian study club in school to attract more students to learn about it.
T: Wonderful. It seems that all of you have a good understanding of how Confucian ideas can be applied in our lives and how to spread them.
十、总结(约 2 分钟)
T: Class, today we watched a video about Confucius and the concept of “Ren” in Confucianism. We learned that Confucian thought has been an important part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. The concept of “Ren” is the core of Confucius' thought, guiding us to be kind, respectful, and responsible. We also discussed how to apply these ideas in our study and daily life and how to spread these traditional Chinese values.
