Early in my teaching career, I heard countless make-believe stories for unfinished homework.
Then I grew less trusting and quit __11__ any excuse. When the students at my new school didn’t
finish homework, I never asked why. Instead, I just sighed loudly and recorded a zero in the grade
book. I soon gained the __12__ I thought I wanted.
One day, Anthony approached me. “Could I talk to you?” he asked __13__. “I know you said
no excuse, but I don’t want you to think I’m __14__ because I often come without my homework.”
He then looked up at me for the first time. “It’s just that... my dad moved out, and my mom works
at night, so I have to look after my little brothers. Often, they cry a lot, and it’s hard for me to
__15__...”
I was about to ask why he didn’t tell me earlier when I suddenly realized why. So I changed the
__16__. “Would it help if you stayed after school and worked on it before you go home?”
He nodded hard.
Anthony became the first student in my after-school study session. Several days later, Terrell
joined him, followed by Sandy and Randy. Before long, I had a room full of students. Their stories
were not amusing, but all very __17__:
• The power company __18__ our lights because we couldn’t pay the bill.
• My dad says schoolwork is just a waste of time.
• We don’t have any paper in the house.
I thus discovered not all kids come from families that are __19__. Not all kids have a quiet
bedroom with a desk and study light. Some don’t even have home. Most importantly, I learned that
“I’ll listen” __20__ better than “No excuse!”

Are you concerned about that tree in the front yard? Have tree
branches been falling off that evergreen tree over the garage? Or
maybe you just need tree removal or some regular tree pruning to let
that rare Portland sunshine shine in?
Urban Forest Pro in Portland is a full-service tree care company providing the Portland area
with tree services. If you have a problem, any problem, that involves trees, our tree service and
removal experts can help you solve it. Below are our most popular tree services.
Tree Pruning Our arborists(树艺师)are trained to recognize the unique needs of your trees,
taking into account factors such as the tree’s age, health & prior pruning. Doing tree pruning,
we selectively remove certain parts of a tree according to the goals of our customers such as
roof protection, increased sunlight, view clearance, and privacy protection. Our arborists can in
most cases come up with a pruning method that is both beneficial for the tree’s health and
longevity and meets the needs of our customers.
Tree Removal Our arborists use the latest techniques and skills to assure the safety of your
home, roof, and nearby structures to make sure your tree removal is done successfully. All tree
debris(残骸)is roped down and kept under our control at all times to ensure your tree removal
is safe.
Tree Assessment A tree assessment provides customers, for a small fee, with a verbal
explanation of the condition of their trees. In addition, the arborist may describe any DIY
options you might have to correct or improve the problem. It is also of value for customers who
cannot afford to have tree services done at this time but only want to make a budget now.
Tree Planting We have a large selection of affordable high quality trees that are handpicked
by our arborists, or our customers can also purchase their own trees and have them planted
under the best conditions by a knowledgeable professional from our company. Our arborists

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you
how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents
are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck.
As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly,
“old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my
Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn
calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own.
Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person.
“You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔
画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed
me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written
and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural
restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the
word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes,
conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been
learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a
return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself
more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This
word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself.
This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
24. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
25. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A. reconnect with her origin B. pick up a new hobby
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
26. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A. comes from creative energy B. reflects the creator’s spirits
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
27. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. We are the sum of what we create.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. Find beauty from your inner self.

Plants do not listen to the radio. But a team of researchers in Greece recently found a way to
turn lemons into very small “radio stations” that can broadcast information about their trees’
moisture content to a smartphone—the first step toward creating what the researchers call an
“Internet of plants.”
Scientists had previously attached sensors to trees to measure their water use, but “no other
team had created a wireless radio network among plants, sending information while consuming only
a few microwatts and costing just a few dollars,” says project leader Aggelos Bletsas, a professor of
electrical and computer engineering at the Technical University of Crete.
The network consists of several basic components: an existing FM radio station, an antenna (天
线 ) attached to a lemon growing on a tree, a humidity (湿度 ) sensor in the lemon, a transistor
connected to an antenna and an FM receiver. First, the antenna picks up the signal from the FM
station, and then passes the signal to the transistor, which is modulated by the humidity sensor. The
sensor switches the transistor on and off at a rate dependent on the plant’s moisture level: if the soil
is wet or if the atmosphere is humid, that rate is lower; if it is dry, the rate is higher. Finally, the
antenna broadcasts this information to the radio receiver on a mobile phone.
In this way, plants can tell farmers if they are thirsty. “We can literally ‘listen’ to the moisture
of the plant, using our mobile FM radio with a $3.4 sensor,” Bletsas says. “Two of these sensors for
every acre on any given farm might change the way we conduct agriculture and ‘understand’
plants.” He notes that more sensors may be needed for the best possible results. Such real-time
information could enable better control of air and soil moisture.
Why go through all this trouble and not just use already common wireless technology, such as
Bluetooth? “Not only is our technique less complex, as we are just borrowing signals in the
environment,” Bletsas says, but “a Bluetooth-based sensor costs about $25. Our final aim is to
launch sensors onto the market costing less than $1.”
“Bletsas and his team are completely changing the way of environmental sensing using very
simple equipment and surprisingly little power,” says Alexandros Dimakis, an associate professor
of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, who was not involved
in the research. “Their work could be a transformational Internet of Things technology for
agriculture and for monitoring the environment.”
28. The radio network created by Greek researchers _____.
A. consumes much energy B. can be put in a smartphone
C. uses simple technology at low cost D. broadcasts radio programs to plants
29. What does the underlined word “modulated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Monitored. B. Adjusted. C. Measured. D. Connected.
30. What is Alexandros Dimakis’ attitude to the “radio network”?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.
31. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To discuss methods of studying plants.
B. To assess the efficiency of Internet of plants.
C. To stress the importance of keeping soil’s moisture.
D. To introduce a new way of measuring plants’ water use.
D
“If I only had a little humility, I’d be perfect,” the media giant Ted Turner supposedly said

Intellectual humility is a particular instance of humility, since you can be down-to-earth about most
things but still ignore your mental limitations.”
Intellectual humility means recognizing that we don’t know everything. Actually, it means we
should acknowledge that we’re probably biased in our belief about just how much we understand
and seek out the sources of wisdom that we lack.
The Internet and digital media have created the impression of limitless knowledge at our
fingertips. But, by making us lazy, they have opened up a space that ignorance can fill. The
psychologist Tania Lombrozo of the University of California explained how technology enhances
our illusions (错觉 ) of wisdom. She argues that the way we access information is critical to our
understanding—and the more easily we can recall an image, word or statement, the more likely
we’ll think we’ve successfully learned it, and so withdraw from effortful cognitive processing.
Logical puzzles presented in an unfriendly font (字体 ), for example, can encourage someone to
make extra effort to solve them. Yet this approach runs counter to the nice designs of the apps and
sites that populate our screens, where our brain processes information in a “smooth” way.
What about all the information that presents online? Well, your capacity to learn from it
depends on your attitudes. Intellectually humble people don’t hide or ignore their weaknesses. In
fact, they see them as sources of personal development, and use arguments as an opportunity to
refine their views. People who are humble by nature tend to be more open-minded and quicker to
resolve disputes, since they recognize that their own opinions might not be valid.
At the other end of the scale lies intellectual arrogance. Such arrogance almost always
originates from the egocentric bias—the tendency to overestimate their own virtue or importance,
ignoring the role of chance or the influence of other people’s actions on their lives. This is what
makes these people credit success to themselves and failure to circumstance. From an evolutionary
perspective, intellectual arrogance can also be seen as a way of achieving dominance through
forcing one’s view on others. Intellectually arrogant people hardly invest mental resources in
discussion or working towards group consensus, thus making it hard for groups to work
successfully.
The Thrive Center for Human Development in California, which seeks to help young people
turn into successful adults, is funding a series of major studies about intellectual humility. Their
hypothesis is that humility, curiosity and openness are key to a fulfilling life. “Without humility, you
are unable to learn,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s Head of People Operations, notes.
32. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. the harm arrogance does to us B. the key elements to a fulfilling life
C. the way people access information online D. the significance of intellectual humility
33. Technology enhances our illusions of wisdom because it _____.
A. allows easy access to abundant information B. enables people to think critically
C. makes it hard for people to recall information D. offers too much unreliable information
34. According to Para. 4, intellectually humble people _____.
A. value others’ opinions more than their own B. use online information to better themselves
C. are unwilling to show their strengths D. prefer to solve difficult problems
35. The author will probably agree that _____.
A. intellectual arrogance is the result of evolution
B. intellectually arrogant people often lack team spirits
C. successful people are often unaware of their limitations
D. circumstances don’t favor intellectually arrogant people

I work at a community library. Many people are under the assumption that public libraries
are no longer needed because of the Internet. Nothing could be further from the truth.
____36____ A simple Internet search for “cats” produces approximately 2.98 billion results in
less than one second. It is a huge number! How do you even begin to sort through all of those
results? We hear so much about “false news”. ____37____ Librarians are there to help. They
have been trained, through special classes and workshops, to sort through all of the results and
find credible sources. Author Neil Gaiman said, “Google can bring you back 100,000 answers.
A librarian can bring you back the right one.”
____38____ It helps connect people with the resources they need to find a job, continue
their education, and learn new skills. It helps seniors find the resources they need to keep up
with the “modern” world. It helps new parents develop a love for literacy in their children and
bond with them. It helps local artists and craftsmen display their work. It helps students find
the answers to those seemingly impossible homework questions. It allows people to meet and
exchange ideas.
Libraries are so much more than books and information. Yes, there are public computers,
Internet access, movies, music, programs and a thousand other things. ____39____ They are
places where people feel safe and welcomed. They are places where someone who has limited
resources can freely access materials and equipment they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. They
can, at times, be a harbour for someone who needs a quiet place to work or study.
Some of the best memories of my childhood involve going to the local library and in
speaking with many others in the neighborhood, they too have those same memories. They are
presently making those same memories with their children and their grandchildren.
____40____ I don’t see the Internet doing that.
A. We don’t know what sources to trust.
B. The public library helps people better their lives.
C. The importance of library staff comes to the surface.
D. However, libraries’ meaning and relevance goes even beyond that.
E. The public library brings people together to build a strong community.
F. In fact, it is because of the Internet that public libraries are needed now more than ever.
G.Every day children, students and adults use libraries to learn, grow and achieve their dreams.

Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods? One reason is that eating these
types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body.
Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods.
When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes (酶) that are part of the food in its raw form.
These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without
these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to
be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients
are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the
- 高一年级英语第六学段考试 2025 年 7 月 第 7 页(共 8 页)-
digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic
waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.
Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism that
tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset
the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely
away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the
bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital
oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism (新陈代谢 ) becomes
inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity.
The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When
that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more
common.
To stop this vicious circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will
neutralize the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can
help. It’s also important to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods
that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly
want to change and help your body heal itself, you need to take an active approach.
1. What’s the function of the natural enzymes?
2. How does the body protect its vital organs from acidic waste?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Eating the right types of processed foods can help neutralize the acid accumulated in body.
4. In your daily life, what active approaches can you take in choosing food if you truly want to stay
healthy? (In about 40 words)

By 2055, schools will transform into dynamic hubs where sustainability, innovation, and human connection
coexist in harmony.
Campuses will rely on green energy solutions. Solar panels will blanket classroom rooftops, while courtyard
gardens irrigated by rainwater recycling systems serve as outdoor learning laboratories. In science labs, AI tutors will
provide personalized guidance, and students could analyze experiment data via holographic displays, then design
eco-friendly structures with 3D printer. Yet the human touch remains essential. Human teachers use brainwave-
monitoring headsets to tailor lessons, giving feedback in handwritten uplifting notes. Art studios will be creative
spaces, where digital art platforms showcase student creations.
Imagine such a school where technology fuels curiosity, nature fosters responsibility, and human interaction
stays heartfelt. I’m filled with optimism for the future development of our country’s educational landscape.
