Matt may have found his calling related to birds. He used to make puppets and is now a farming officer in Yorkshire, England. Matt drew a lot of attention over the weekend when he went into nature dressed as a giant bird.
It wasn’t just any bird, but a 10-foot-long costume of the Eurasian curlew (白腰杓鹬), a large wading bird in Europe known for its long, thin beak and decreasing population. Over the weekend, Matt walked 53 miles (about 85 kilometers) along the Nidderdale Way to raise awareness about the curlew’s decline.
Matt affectionately called the costume “Cathy the Curlew”. It was made out of polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) and bamboo. This unique challenge began on April 19, which is before World Curlew Day on April 21, which was created in 2017 to inform people about habitat loss, land-use changes, and climate change affecting the curlew.
For Matt, this was as much an art project as it was a conservation effort. The journey took about two days. He started at Pateley Bridge on Saturday and finished at Brimham Rocks on Sunday. Along the way, news coverage and Matt’s talks with people he met helped spread the message to protect the curlew.
The area where Matt hiked was once a main habitat for the curlews, but their population has significantly declined over the years. In 2015, the bird was added to the UK Red List for birds, indicating the highest conservation concern.
“I’m really worried about the curlew,” Matt said. “Every nest, chick, and egg matters. We need around 10,000 more curlews each year to reach a sustainable (可持续) population,” he added. “Curlews need to successfully raise one chick (雏鸟) every two years, but they usually don’t manage that from the four eggs they lay each year. One chick every two years is what we need to have a sustainable population, but we are far from that goal.”
4. Why did Matt choose to dress as a Eurasian curlew?
A. To warn the public of the species’ decline. B. To promote puppet-making skills.
C. To get people to know about curlews. D. To celebrate World Curlew Day.
5. How did Matt’s hike contribute to raising people’s awareness of curlews?
A. By calling on volunteers to hike with him. B. By selling curlew costumes.
C. Through activities held by news media. D. Through media reports and communication.
6. What can be inferred about the area where Matt hiked?
A. Few curlews live there now. B. There used to be a large curlew population.
C. The habitat there is completely destroyed. D. It experienced a massive increase in curlews.
7. What do Matt’s words in the last paragraph mean?
A. The curlew population is sustainable. B. The curlew population increases slowly.
C. Curlews should lay more eggs each year. D. Curlews are important for the ecosystem.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。主要讲述Matt扮成白腰杓鹬徒步,以提高人们对其数量减少的关注。
4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Over the weekend, Matt walked 53 miles (about 85 kilometers) along the Nidderdale Way to raise awareness about the curlew’s decline.(上周末,Matt沿着尼德代尔步道走了53英里(约85公里),以提高人们对杓鹬数量减少的认识)”可知,Matt选择扮成白腰杓鹬是为了提醒公众该物种数量在减少。故选A项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Along the way, news coverage and Matt’s talks with people he met helped spread the message to protect the curlew.(一路上,新闻报道以及Matt与他遇到的人的交谈帮助传播了保护杓鹬的信息)”可知,Matt的徒步通过媒体报道和与人交流来提高人们对杓鹬的关注度。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The area where Matt hiked was once a main habitat for the curlews, but their population has significantly declined over the years.(Matt徒步的地区曾经是杓鹬的主要栖息地,但多年来它们的数量大幅减少)”可知,该地区曾经有大量的杓鹬。故选B项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Curlews need to successfully raise one chick (雏鸟) every two years, but they usually don’t manage that from the four eggs they lay each year. One chick every two years is what we need to have a sustainable population, but we are far from that goal.(杓鹬需要每两年成功养育一只雏鸟,但它们每年产四个蛋,通常也无法做到这一点。每两年一只雏鸟是我们拥有可持续种群所需要的,但我们离这个目标还很远)”可知,Matt的话意味着杓鹬的数量增长缓慢。故选B项。
C
Britain was once covered with rainforests, known as Celtic rainforests or Atlantic woodland. The temperate (温带的) rainforests only occur in places close to the sea with high rainfall, high humidity (湿度) and low variations in temperature and full of plants and animals. The Celtic rainforests used to spread out all across the wetter areas of the country’s west. But over the centuries the ancient woodlands were later cleared and changed into grasslands for sheep and cattle. By the start of the 20th century, Britain had become the least-wooded country in Europe, with only small parts remaining in western coastal rainforest areas.
There’s a new rainforest coming back to Britain right now. A movement is underway across Britain to recover these forgotten ecosystems. And in Devon, the first step towards achieving that has just been completed. With the help of over 100 local volunteers, more than 2,500 native trees have been planted at Devon Wildlife Trust’s Bowden Pillars site, not far from the town of Totnes. It’s hoped that another 4,500 oak, rowan, alder, hazel, birch, willow and holly trees will be planted by the end of this winter and over the coming decades, and that they’ll grow to form a thriving (欣欣向荣的) temperate rainforest.
The recovery programme, led by The Wildlife Trusts, is happening across other parts of the country, including Cornwall and Pembrokeshire and has been boosted by a significant £38 million of funding from an insurance company.
Claire Inglis, a nature reserve officer at Devon Wildlife Trust, said, “The full grown temperate rainforest will take several decades to become established, but the advantages for nature will be much swifter. The mix of young trees planted among grasslands and hedges (树篱), along with our promise not to use chemicals, will be better for local butterflies and bees, along with local birds such as yellowhammers and barn owls. It will be fascinating to see how it develops.”
8. What was mainly responsible for Britain’s lost Celtic rainforest in the past?
A. Low temperature. B. Animal farming.
C. Plant variation. D. High humidity.
9. What can we say about the movement across Britain?
A. It’s worrying. B. It’s promising.
C. It’s unrealistic. D. It’s uncontrollable.
10. What does the underlined word “swifter” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Further. B. More unlikely.
C. Quicker. D. More costly.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A Story of Destruction About Britain’s Lost Rainforests
B. The Challenges of Reviving Celtic Rainforests in Britain
C. A Nationwide Effort to Revive Lost Rainforests in Britain
D. The Truth of the Disappearance of Britain’s Celtic Rainforests
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. C

【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一段“The full grown temperate rainforest will take several decades to become established, but the advantages for nature will be much swifter. (成熟的温带雨林需要几十年的时间才能形成,但是对自然的好处会更swifter)”,由but可知,前后形成转折,前面说需要的时间长,后面应表示好处来得快,所以“swifter”意为“更快的”。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The Celtic rainforests used to spread out all across the wetter areas of the country’s west. But over the centuries the ancient woodlands were later cleared and changed into grasslands for sheep and cattle. (凯尔特雨林曾一度遍布英国西部较为湿润的地区。但在过去的几个世纪里,这些古老的林地逐渐被砍伐清理,转而变成了用于放牧牛羊的牧场)”以及结合全文内容可知,文章开篇提到英国凯尔特雨林的消失,随后重点介绍了当前全国范围内恢复雨林的努力,包括植树计划、资金支持以及预期的生态效益,因此,最佳标题应涵盖“恢复雨林”这一核心内容。故选C项。
D
If you’re reading this in bed on your phone, you’re not alone. Many people use their phones before and after bedtime, especially young adults and teens. Still, you might want to stop soon. Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep, although the exact reasons are not completely clear.
In a new study, researchers looked into this issue by using data from a large survey of 45, 202 university students in Norway. They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night.
“Sleep problems are very common among students and have serious effects on mental health, school performance, and overall well-being,” says Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, a clinical psychologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. “Because so many people use screens in bed, we wanted to see how different screen activities affect sleep. We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive (互动的) and can motivate (激发) emotions.”
However, the study found that using social media is no worse for sleep than other screen activities. The type of screen activity doesn’t matter as much as the total time spent using screens in bed. The researchers found no significant differences between social media and other screen activities. This suggests that using screens in general is the main cause of sleep problems, likely because it takes up time that could be used for resting.
“If you have trouble sleeping and think screen time might be a cause, try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep,” says Hjetland. “If you use screens, consider turning off notifications (通知) to reduce disruptions during the night.”
12. How does the author begin the argument?
A. By listing different opinions.
B. By referring to scientific data.
C. By mentioning a common act.
D. By analyzing cause and effect.
13. Why did researchers initially guess social media could affect sleep more?
A. It included emotional inspiration.
B. It contained violent content.
C. It was entirely used by students.
D. It required frequent physical interaction.
14. Which is the practical advice Hjetland provides?
A. Reading e-books instead of social media.
B. Avoiding using screen for a while before bed.
C. Increasing daytime physical activity.
D. Stopping using screens after supper.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time in Bed May Increase Sleeplessness
B. Good Sleep Is Key to Students’ Performance
C. Social Media Has the Worst Effect on Mental Health
D Reading on Phones Is Common Among Teens and Young Adults
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. A

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland的观点“We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive and can motivate emotions. (我们认为社交媒体可能对睡眠更不利,因为它是互动的,可能激发情绪。)”可知,研究人员最初猜测社交媒体影响更大是因为其包含情感激发(emotional inspiration)。故选A项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段Hjetland的建议“try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep (减少床上使用屏幕的时间,睡前至少30-60分钟停止使用)”可知,实用建议是睡前一段时间避免使用屏幕。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。全文围绕“床上使用屏幕”与“睡眠问题”的关联展开,重点说明屏幕使用时间(而非活动类型)是导致失眠的主因,尤其是第一段的“Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep (睡前或在床上使用屏幕被认为会扰乱睡眠)”以及第二段的“They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night. (他们发现,在床上使用屏幕会使失眠的几率增加59%,并且会导致每晚睡眠时间减少24分钟。)”可知,A项“床上使用屏幕可能增加失眠”最贴合主题,适合作标题。故选A项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a freshman in college, I liked to write in my free time. I even started writing personal stories online for clients (委托人). At first, everything seemed to go well. However, over time, I began to feel uneasy about my clients and the work.
In the third month, I didn’t receive my payment on time, which made me anxious. I sent an email to the client to ask what happened. But I got no reply. I sent more emails, but still no answer. Finally, I got his email, saying that my story wasn’t what he had expected. Time and time again, my already low confidence was completely destroyed. I started avoiding friends, stopped answering calls, and locked myself in my room, feeling anxious and helpless.
One night my phone rang. It was my high school friend Lydia. I answered the call, and hearing her warm voice made me feel better. After a brief chat, I told her all my troubles. Lydia listened quietly. After a moment, she said, “You are very good at writing. Why not try something more meaningful? You like writing, so why not try writing for magazines? There are many opportunities out there.”
“Writing for magazines? I’m not sure,” I replied. “I don’t know how to write that kind of article, and I don’t know what they want.”
“You can research it yourself,” she encouraged me. “In high school, you always found ways to solve problems. Now, you are facing a problem. Why not try to find a way out for yourself? You can take the first step.” “You’re right,” I said. “I will give it a try.”
After the call, I started researching magazines online. I learned about the topics they usually covered and the types of articles that were popular.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Then, a thought flashed through my mind. What if I write about my own struggles as a college writer? Many students might relate to self-doubt and rejection. With trembling fingers, I searched “student writing magazines” and discovered New Voices Quarterly, a publication dedicated to authentic youth stories. Their latest theme was “Overcoming Creative Blocks” — perfect for my story. That night, I outlined an article blending my client disasters with hard-won lessons, tentatively titled “From Rejection to Redemption: A Writer’s Journey”. I included practical tips I wished I’d known earlier, like how to vet clients and set clear expectations.
When I finally finished the article on my own experience, I was excited to send it out. Two weeks later, the editor gave a surprising reply: “Your raw honesty is exactly what our readers need. Would you consider expanding this into a monthly column?” That acceptance letter became my turning point. Readers’ messages poured in — some shared similar struggles, others thanked me for the hope. I realized that meaningful writing wasn’t about pleasing clients, but connecting with real people. My dorm walls no longer felt like a hopeless prison.

We need around 10,000 more curlews each year to reach a sustainable (可持续的) population,” he added.

One night, my phone rang.
