When you're choosing a college, a lot of factors probably may be considered: the school's

laptop designed to carry you through until after you graduate.

Everyone tries their best in life, and sometimes a few kind words of encouragement can
help people realize that their efforts are not in vain (徒劳 ).Ⅰ remember a time when I was in
fifth grade, and I was a very shy girl.
There was a drawing competition at my school that day. As everyone started to use their
creative ideas to draw, I was only trying to think of something creative that could express my
thoughts and emotions. Lost in my own world, I was brought back to reality when my art
teacher called my name from behind. She came to me and encouraged me, saying, “Don’t
overthink it, just put whatever comes to your mind on the canvas (画布). Do your best, and you
will do well.”
Taking her words of wisdom to heart, I started my painting. Time flew by, and soon the
bell rang, signaling the end of the time limit. We all turned in our canvases for inspection (检
查). The next day, the winners of the competition were announced in front of the whole school.
To my surprise, I heard my name being called second prize. It was a bolt from the blue for me,
as I had never dared to dream of winning any prize.
Later on, I expressed my gratitude to my art teacher for her words of encouragement and
for believing in me. That day, I became aware of my talent and started painting more whenever
I had free time. Sometimes, I think that if it weren’t for her words of encouragement, I may
have never discovered the talent I have.
Overall, this experience taught me the importance of encouraging others and how a few
kind words can make a significant impact on someone’s life.

Everybody hates rats. But in the areas where there are many earthquakes, rats will soon be
man’s friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(营救)dogs. Why? Because they can
smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and
they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to
save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's
brain gives a signal(信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow
the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at
Cornel University, New York says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells
around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to
train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland
says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get
out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a
building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
61. Why are rats used in the new research project?
A. They are smarter than dogs. B. They are more curious.
C. They can reach smaller spaces. D. They are more popular than dogs.
62. What is the purpose of the new research project?
A. To make a comparison. B. To help rescue people.
C. To reduce the work of rescuers. D. To charge robots.
高三英语试卷 第 8 页 (共 10 页)
63. What’s the main reason why rats are better than robots to find survivors?

B. Robots can't judge the smell of living survivors.
C. Rats have natural ability to find survivors.
D. Rats can get to spaces unreachable for robots.
64.What’s Julie Ryan’s attitude towards “rat project”?
A.Negative B.Neutral C.Positive D.Opposed
65. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The ways to rescue survivors.
B. Rats are man’s new best friends.
C. Rats can be trained to help find survivors after the earthquake.
D. Man will be happy to see a rat in the building.
D
"Lack is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity, " said the American talk show host
Oprah Winfrey. I've never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice
it's probably worth listening to.
Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these
days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you.
If you're a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree
stump (树桩)for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.
A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can
all make ourselves luckier. It's not about going to a temple to burn some incense(香)in hopes
that the gods will give you good fortune, but practical advice you can follow each day.
Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies, First he divided volunteers into
two groups: those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave
everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had
inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while
the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command,
“Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper, “was written in big letters. The
unlucky people mostly did not spot the message.
It's easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They
might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People
who are "lucky", in fact, keep an open mind and don't go through the same routine every day.
In a word, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the
time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.

67. What do you know about Oprah Winfrey?

D. She became successful by her own effort.
68. The writer quoted the Chinese tale of a farmer in order to show _____________.

第 II卷(非选择题,共 25分)
第一部分:阅读表达(共 5小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分)
My job consists of planning, producing operating scientific instruments in-flight,and I
am grateful for having worked on missions(太空飞行任务) on Saturn, the Moon, and our own
planet Earth.
When I was a high-schooler, I was unsure of what college I wanted to attend,or what
major I wanted to choose. After receiving an email from a college called Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT)I decided to apply to a summer program they were offering with
the encouragement of my mom. After taking part in that program, I knew that MIT was the
right university for me.The enthusiastic students and endless opportunities developed a feeling
of belonging in me that led me to apply and eventually get accepted.
The most exciting and fulfilling(令人满足的) part of being an engineer is that I am able to
work on projects that benefit humans. What they may not imagine is the great body of work
高三英语试卷 第 10 页 (共 10 页)
being done to study our own home -Earth. I am thankful to have a career that to commit myself
to that allows me responsibility. The most exciting part of my career has been seeing the end of
the Cassini mission to Saturn. Some of the people on the team had been working on the mission
for longer than I had been alive, but they still treated me as one of their own.I was given the
opportunity to operate the cameras that would catch breathtaking(激动人心的) images of the
planet. And when the Cassini spacecraft had run out of fuel, I quickly learned that it was not
just the end of the mission, but the end of a team. The night we watched with bittersweet
longing as its signal faded to nothing is something that I will always keep in my memories.
And while Cassini will be remembered for its historic contributions, what I will remember it
for is the team it brought together.
My friends often ask why a girl could achieve all these.I always grew up as a big fan of
fiction.I read the Harry Potter books and loved anything fantasy. I realized that the common
theme of hero stories is that the hero must always make a choice to start their adventure. If you
don't pick up the sword(剑)in your own story because you are afraid of what may happen next,
you risk not having a story at all.
71. Why did the author apply to MIT? (No more than 8 words)
72. What does the author think about her job according to Paragraph 3? (No more than 15
words)
73. How did the author feel when seeing the end of the Cassini mission to Satern? (No more
