Passage 1 基础层
The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine, is honoring the career of popular children’s book author and illustrator who calls the state home. Upon That Isle: The Story & Works of Chris Van Dusen is on view, with artwork and information about Van Dusen, whose books include The Circus Ship, Hattie and Hudson, and the If I Built series. He is also known for his colorful and cartoon - painted artwork.
The exhibition was designed by Luke Gates - Millardo. He noted that the museum showcasing Van Dusen’s work made sense because “a lot of his books have been inspired by historic events of the culture and lifestyle living in Maine.”
While planning the exhibition, Gates - Millardo and his team visited Van Dusen’s home studio, where he showed them tens of old story verses, sketches, and scribbles (like rhyming verses on scraps of paper). “A bunch of those scraps and sketches made it into our exhibit because we wanted to convey how much effort truly goes into creating something new,” Gates - Millardo said. The team re - created the studio at the museum and filled it with items Van Dusen uses and looks at as he works. The exhibition also has large replicas of objects from Van Dusen’s books, such as the Circus Ship (Gates - Millardo made it with guidance from the museum’s boat - building department). As visitors leave, they can learn how to draw the author’s beloved dog character and write a message to Van Dusen. “Hopefully they can leave feeling inspired and ready to use their imagination and create something beautiful,” Gates - Millardo said.

Passage2 培优层
Disney and Pixar, the studios behind films like Inside Out 2, Turning Red, and Luca, are releasing a new animated film: Elio. The movie follows an Earth boy who feels like an outsider. It hits theaters on June 20.
In Elio, the title character (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) is an 11 - year - old who dreams of being abducted by aliens to a world where he fits in. After sending a message into space, he’s recruited by the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization. There, he befriends Cloaked, a kind alien and the son of a warlord. Domee Shi (director of Turning Red) co - directed Elio and described it as “a funny, exciting adventure with a lot of heart and some surprises.”
Elio was inspired by Adrian Molina’s lonely childhood as an artsy kid on a military base (Molina co - directed the film with Madeline Sharafian). Classic sci - fi films like E.T. also influenced the movie. To design the Communiverse and its aliens, production designer Harley Jessup studied ink pools, cell images, and bacteria under a microscope. For example, Cloaked is based on a tardigrade (a microscopic aquatic animal with no eyes and sturdy legs).
After helping an alien leader, Elio’s view of himself and the world changes. As Sharafian noted, one of the film’s messages is “the possibility of connection everywhere.”
