M: So, what advice would you give to new college students?
W: Well, professors expect you to work a lot outside of class. So use a planner. It’s also important to know what the best time for you to study is. Like, after two years, I finally realized that I don’t do my best work late in the evening! So now I try to schedule my classes for the afternoon and the evening, and study the rest of the day on my own. Oh, and one more thing — Take breaks! Don’t think you can study effectively for six hours straight!

W: Hello, everyone. As part of this series of lectures on the development of early humans, today we are looking at rock art.
Rock art is found all over the world, and what is rather amazing, is... Well, let me give you an example. When our ancestors drew humans, they would often draw them as stick figures, but if they drew a face, then the eyes were almost always very open and wide. And these drawings were produced by people of totally different cultural backgrounds. But I’d like to focus now on the rock art of the early residents of Australia. The images that survive in this part of the world date back to at least 20,000 years ago. In fact, people in Australia were still practicing this art form in the late 18th century, when the Europeans began to arrive, and certain images point to the contact between them. For example, the image that is evidence of European arrival is that of horses, an animal that would have been very unusual to the Australian landscape.
Um, it isn’t actually known how many sites there are across Australia where rock art can be found, but unfortunately we do know that much of the art is being lost to us. Since the 1960s, industry alone has destroyed around an estimated 10,000 pieces of art. In some cases, the art is damaged when...

4 Global Art Fairs to See in 2025
The art market rises and falls, but art fairs are forever. Here are some fairs coming up in 2025.
Art Dubai: Dubai, Apr. 18-20
Founded in 2007, Art Dubai usually features around 120 galleries, some 65 percent of which are from the Global South. The fair has a section for digital works — not typical at other fairs. The solo project section, Bawwaba, is worth seeing.
Expo Chicago: Chicago, Apr. 25-27
Expo Chicago was established in 2012. The 2024 edition had 170 galleries from 29 countries exhibiting their artworks. One of those was Claire Oliver Gallery of New York, which has participated in every edition so far. “We love this fair,” Claire Oliver said. “The visitors are engaged, ask great questions and are truly curious.”
Tokyo Gendai: Yokohama, Sept. 12-14
Asian art fairs have been growing rapidly. The biggest regional player, Art Basel Hong Kong, was joined by Singapore’s Art SG in 2023, the same year as the first edition of Tokyo Gendai. The fair had 69 galleries showing contemporary art in July 2024 for its second edition. “The focus is on cutting-edge and contemporary work,” said Tim Blum, who runs the gallery Blum.
Paris Photo: Paris, Nov. 13-16
Held annually, Paris Photo will have its 28th edition in 2025. Despite the photography focus, organizers say the fair has crossover appeal. “We’ve expanded the range of collectors — we get not only photography people, but contemporary art collectors,” said the fair’s artistic director, Anna Planas.

In the small town of Willow Creek, there lived a strange old man named Mr. Thompson. He was known for his daily walks through the town square, always carrying a worn-out violin case. Yet, no one had ever heard him play a single note.
Every morning at precisely 8:00 am, Mr. Thompson would sit on the same weathered bench, carefully open the case, and gently touch the strings of his violin. Passers-by would often pause, expecting to hear music, but the old man would simply sit in silence, his eyes closed as if listening to a melody (旋律) only he could hear.
The citizens had various theories about Mr. Thompson’s strange behavior. Some believed he had lost his ability to play due to age, while others thought he was waiting for the perfect moment to reveal his talent. The local newspaper even ran a story titled “The Silent Musician of Willow Creek”, which brought curious visitors to the town.
One particularly cold winter morning, a young girl named Emily approached Mr. Thompson. She had recently lost her hearing due to an illness and was attracted by the silent musician. As she sat beside him, she noticed tears streaming down his face as his fingers gently moved along the violin’s neck.
Suddenly, Emily understood. She reached into her bag and pulled out a notebook, writing: “You’re playing for someone you’ve lost, aren’t you?” Mr. Thompson read the note and nodded, his hands shaking as he wrote his reply: “Every day, I play for my wife who passed away. She was the only one who could hear my music.”
From that day forward, Emily and Mr. Thompson formed an unlikely friendship. Though the town never heard a single note from the old man’s violin, they came to understand that some of the most beautiful music is the kind that plays in our hearts.
24. Why did Mr. Thompson always carry a violin but never play a single note in public?
A. He was playing for his late wife in his heart.
B. He was waiting for the perfect moment to reveal his talent.
C. He had lost his ability to play due to age.
D. He was too shy to play in front of others.
25. Why did the local newspaper run a story about Mr. Thompson?
A. He was a famous musician.
B. His strange behavior aroused curiosity.
C. He often performed in the town square.
D. He made a lot of money by playing the violin.
26. What is the author’s attitude toward Mr. Thompson’s story?
A. Critical. B. Admiring. C. Indifferent. D. Humorous.
27. What is the main theme of the story?
A. The importance of perseverance in music.
B. The impact of loss on artistic expression.
C. The power of unspoken emotions and memories.
D. The value of friendship between different generations.
A 25. B 26. B 27. C

Thompson read the note and nodded, his hands shaking as he wrote his reply: “Every day, I play for my wife who passed away. She was the only one who could hear my music.”(汤普森先生读了便签条,点了点头,双手颤抖着写道:“我每天都为我去世的妻子演奏。她是唯一能听到我音乐的人。”)”可知,汤普森先生每天在心里为去世的妻子拉小提琴。故选A。
根据第三段“The local newspaper even ran a story titled “The Silent Musician of Willow Creek”, which brought curious visitors to the town.(当地报纸甚至刊登了一篇题为“柳溪沉默的音乐家”的报道,吸引了好奇的游客来到该镇)”以及前文对汤普森先生奇怪行为(带着小提琴却不演奏)的描述可知,当地报纸报道他是因为他奇怪的行为引发了人们的好奇。
全文通过细腻的描写,如第四段“As she sat beside him, she noticed tears streaming down his face as his fingers gently moved along the violin’s neck.(当她坐在他身边时,她注意到当他的手指轻轻地沿着小提琴的琴颈移动时,泪水从他的脸上流下来)”和结尾的升华“Though the town never heard a single note from the old man’s violin, they came to understand that some of the most beautiful music is the kind that plays in our hearts.(虽然镇上的人从来没有听到过老人小提琴上的一个音符,但他们开始明白,一些最美丽的音乐是在我们心中演奏的)”表明,作者对Mr.

She was the only one who could hear my music.”(汤普森先生读了便签条,点了点头,双手颤抖着写道:“我每天都为我去世的妻子演奏。
C
Socrates declared that the unexamined life wasn’t worth living for a human being, implying that we should attempt to know ourselves, to think through our actions, choices, prejudices, and attitudes. But when it comes to thinking about our own happiness and what makes our lives go well, it really does seem that this reflective attitude can ruin our chances of finding what we seek.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that we are better designed for engaging in other activities than reflecting on how best to achieve our own happiness and well-being. Doing things that enhance our growth in physical, social and intellectual areas tends to bring the reward of feeling good, and so stimulates us further to pursue those activities. Sitting around reflecting on what will make us happy is a lot less efficient than chasing the things that make us happy, and if we think too much, there is an opportunity cost—time that we could have spent in a worthwhile activity has gone while we were thinking deeply about the best way to develop.
The philosopher David has written about the role of reflective thinking in sports. One of his observations is that while sportspeople need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. A footballer needs to think about kicking the ball low and hard to the left of the goalkeeper, but not to overthink the mechanics (力学原理) of the precise small movements of legs and feet that produce that outcome. If he or she does start this sort of thought process, it very often leads to a poorer shot. What’s needed is a kind of automatic response to the situation.
Perhaps something similar is going on in our life. Those people who start detailed programs of self-development in various dimensions, focusing on diet, habits, exercise, mental activity, work output, and so on, are like the footballer thinking through small muscle movements. Perhaps their well-meaning self-reflection on their own development and how they want to achieve it are the very things that will make a high level of development forever unobtainable for them.
28. What may cause an opportunity cost according to the text?
A. Spending time on worthy activities. B. Getting stuck in much self-reflection.
C. Joining in social meetings actively. D. Doing physical exercises efficiently.
29. Why does the author mention David’s observations?
A. To praise a wise philosopher. B. To teach readers football skills.
C. To cite a case of overthinking. D. To support reflective thinking.
30. What does the underlined word “counterproductive” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Harmful. B. Efficient. C. Progressive. D. Complicated.
31. What does the author imply about people who make detailed self-development plans?
A. They are more likely to achieve high-level success.
B. Their methods are supported by scientific research.
C. They should focus more on physical exercise than mental habits.
D. Their over-analysis may prevent them from obtaining their goals.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第二段“Sitting around reflecting on what will make us happy is a lot less efficient than chasing the things that make us happy, and if we think too much, there is an opportunity cost—time that we could have spent in a worthwhile activity has gone while we were thinking deeply about the best way to develop.(坐下来思考什么能让我们快乐比追求让我们快乐的事情效率低得多,如果我们想得太多,就会有机会成本——我们本可以花在有价值的活动上的时间,而我们却在深入思考最好的发展方式。)”
根据第三段“One of his observations is that while sportspeople need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. (他一个观察是,虽然运动员需要思考他们正在执行的基本动作,但开始思考构成这些动作的元素可能会……)”可推知,作者提到David的观察是为了举例说明过度思考的劣势。故选C。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“One of his observations is that while sportspeople need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. A footballer needs to think about kicking the ball low and hard to the left of the goalkeeper, but not to overthink the mechanics of the precise small movements of legs and feet that produce that outcome. If he or she does start this sort of thought process, it very often leads to a poorer shot. What’s needed is a kind of automatic response to the situation. 故选A项。
根据最后一段“Those people who start detailed programs of self-development in various dimensions, focusing on diet, habits, exercise, mental activity, work output, and so on, are like the footballer thinking through small muscle movements. Perhaps their well-meaning self-reflection on their own development and how they want to achieve it are the very things that will make a high level of development forever unobtainable for them. (那些在各个方面开始详细自我发展计划的人,专注于饮食、习惯、锻炼、心理活动、工作产出等,就像足球运动员通过小肌肉运动思考一样。也许他们对自己发展的善意自我反思以及他们想要如何实现这一目标,正是这些事情将使他们永远无法获得高水平的发展。)”可知,他们的过度分析可能会阻碍他们实现目标。故选D项。
D
Scientists from three research facilities in the UK have recently discovered a rare human blood group system called MAL, which could potentially save thousands of people lacking a blood group antigen (血型抗原) called AnWj.
The first such patient was discovered in 1972. Her blood sample lacked the AnWj antigen, which is present in over 99.9 percent of people, as reported by Science Alert.
Blood group antigens are typically protein or sugar molecules (分子)found on red blood cells’ surface, according to the Cleveland Clinic in the US. The presence (positive) or absence (negative) of specific antigens determines different blood groups. These antigens also function as name tags to help our immune system recognize which cells belong in our body. Red cells without the correct antigens may cause allergies, leading to kidney (肾)failure or even death. Therefore, accurate blood typing and proper cross-matching are crucial for safe procedures like organ transplants.
Using advanced DNA analysis technology, the team identified the gene that determines the AnWj blood group antigen. They then tested their finding by introducing that gene into AnWj-negative red cells, delivering the antigen into them. Given AnWj’s close association with the MAL protein, the scientists named the new blood group system MAL.
“It represents a huge achievement to establish the MAL system and to be able to offer the best care to rare, but important, patients,” said lead scientist Louise Tilley.
The discovery adds MAL to other 46 blood group systems already identified before October 2024, according to the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). The ABO system we are familiar with is one of them. Altogether, they contain 366 red cell antigens.
But why do humans have different blood groups in the first place? Scientists have developed various hypotheses (假设) on this. One of the most popular theories suggests that blood types evolved to enhance our species’ immunity against diseases, said the US Stanford Blood Center. One key piece of evidence is that blood type O likely originated before humans migrated out of Africa and was particularly common in regions where malaria was widespread.
32. What is the function of blood group antigens?
A. They determine the shape of red blood cells.
B. They help red blood cells produce more protein.
C. They can prevent people from getting kidney diseases.
D. They act as name tags for the immune system to recognize cells.
33. How did the scientists name the new blood group system MAL?
A. According to the name of the research facility.
B. Based on the name of the patient with the rare blood type.
C. Given the close association between AnWj and the MAL protein.
D. In memory of the Nobel-winning scientist Karl Landsteiner.
34. It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A. people with AnWj-negative blood type are very common
B accurate blood typing is less important for blood transfusion now
C. the study of blood groups may help us better understand human evolution
D. the discovery of the MAL blood group system has no practical value
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Blood Types
B. The ABO Blood Group System
C. The Function of Blood Group Antigens
D. Scientists Discover a New Rare Blood Group System
D 33. C 34. C 35. D
根据第三段“These antigens also function as name tags to help our immune system recognize which cells belong in our body.(这些抗原还起到了“身份标识”的作用,有助于我们的免疫系统辨别哪些细胞属于我们身体的一部分)”可知,血型抗原的功能是作为免疫细胞识别身体细胞的“名字标签”,故选D。
根据第四段“Given AnWj’s close association with the MAL protein, the scientists named the new blood group system MAL.(由于安维蛋白与MAL蛋白质有着密切的关联,因此科学家们将这一新的血型系统命名为MAL)”可知,科学家是鉴于AnWj与MAL蛋白的紧密联系,将新血型系统命名为MAL,故选C。
最后一段“But why do humans have different blood groups in the first place? Scientists have developed various hypotheses (假设) on this. One of the most popular theories suggests that blood types evolved to enhance our species’ immunity against diseases, said the US Stanford Blood Center. One key piece of evidence is that blood type O likely originated before humans migrated out of Africa and was particularly common in regions where malaria was widespread.(但人类为何会有不同的血型呢?
根据第一段“Scientists from three research facilities in the UK have recently discovered a rare human blood group system called MAL, which could potentially save thousands of people lacking a blood group antigen (血型抗原) called AnWj.(来自英国三家研究机构的科学家们近期发现了一种罕见的人类血型系统——MAL。
At the start of your career, it can feel like a Catch -22 situation: You can’t get hired without experience, but you can’t get experience without being hired. So, what is the key to getting jobs with no experience? ____36____, but what else can you do?
Target realistic roles. If you don’t have relevant experience in your chosen field, you’ll have to apply for roles right at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. There’s certainly no shame in targeting entry-level and junior roles. They can both be character-building and a great way to develop a knowledge of the role. ____37____.
Emphasize the skills you do have. Don’t get hung up on the experience you don’t have. ____38____. Soft skills such as communication, and team working are highly valued by all sorts of employers. If you lack experience in your chosen field, then it’s important to acknowledge that, but use it as an opportunity to demonstrate your passion for the role and your motivation to learn.
____39____. In order to gain work experience, you might have to consider working for free, even to get an entry-level position, because some industries are so competitive. Volunteering and internships (实习) are excellent opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of a job and build useful contacts that could lead to a paid position.
Stay busy and resilient ____40____, but it’s something everyone has gone through. It’s all too easy to take the rejection personally and quit. However, by volunteering, participating in community activities, being social and getting out in the world, opportunities will present themselves and you will find the right role for you.
A. Look for work experience
B. Seek jobs with no experience needed
C. Experience means everything during job hunting
D. Trying to find a job with little or no experience isn’t easy
E. Luck and personal connections play important parts in getting jobs
F. Instead, focus your application on the skills that make you a great fit for the role
G. That will give you a head start as you work your way up through the organization
E 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. D
根据前文“So, what is the key to getting jobs with no experience? (在没有经验的情况下,找工作的关键是什么)”以及后文“but what else can you do (还能做什么)?”
根据上文“If you don’t have relevant experience in your chosen field, you’ll have to apply for roles right at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. (如果你在所选领域没有相关经验,那么你就得从最底层的职位开始申请,然后一步步向上晋升)”可知,本句对前文的补充,说明初级岗位的优势。故G项“这会让你在晋升时占得先机”符合语境。故选G。
【38题详解】
前文提到“Don’t get hung up on the experience you don’t have.(不要纠结于你缺乏的经验)”可知,本句承接上文,提出解决方案。
根据后文“In order to gain work experience, you might have to consider working for free, even to get an entry-level position, because some industries are so competitive. Volunteering and internships (实习) are excellent opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of a job and build useful contacts that could lead to a paid position.(为了获得工作经验,你可能不得不考虑无偿工作,哪怕是为了获得一个初级职位,因为某些行业竞争非常激烈。志愿服务和实习是获取工作第一手经验以及建立有助于获得有偿职位的有用人脉关系的绝佳机会)”可知,本段的主旨是寻找工作经验。故A项“寻找工作经验”概括了段落主旨。故选A。
后文提到“but it’s something everyone has gone through (但是这是每个人都会经历的事情)”以及“However, by volunteering, participating in community activities, being social and getting out in the world, opportunities will present themselves and you will find the right role for you.(然而,通过志愿服务、参与社区活动、社交和走出去,机会就会出现,你会找到适合你的角色。)”

故填was recognized。
故填of。
故填a。
故填to enhance。
故填who。
“delight the senses”与“bring people together”是并列关系,都描述了烧饼给人们带来的影响,所以用连词and连接。故填and。

Bill walked out of the medical center slowly at dusk, his legs feeling as heavy as iron. The October wind cut through his jacket, carrying the faint smell of fallen leaves. This was his second trip in 24 hours, and the endless dialysis (透析) had left him exhausted—both in body and wallet. Holding his appointment papers tightly, he sighed at the taxi app on his shaky phone; even short rides were becoming a financial burden.
Timothy almost missed the warning tone on his phone. He was driving to a friend’s house when the medical center address caught his eye. “Hospital rides usually mean trouble,” he murmured, clicking to accept. When Bill slid into the backseat, Timothy noticed the man’s hands were marked with both needle scars and work-calluses (茧). “Thanks for coming, sir,” Bill said, voice trembling. “These treatments... they’re costing my savings faster than I can keep up.”
As streetlights flickered (闪现) over Bill’s lined face, he talked about his years as a soldier, volunteering at the food bank, and fixing neighbors’ roofs for free. “Now I’m the one begging for help,” he laughed sadly, tapping the IV port (留置针) on his arm and adding that he felt like life flipped upside down. Timothy’s heart ached—this man who had spent decades serving others was now struggling alone. “What if we start a fundraiser?” he said suddenly. “You were a soldier and acted as a volunteer before; people here care about you.”
Bill’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope but quickly dimmed. “I don’t want to be a burden,” he protested gently. “People have their own problems to deal with.” “That’s precisely why we should help,” Timothy argued, his voice firm. “Community is about supporting each other in times of need. You’ve given so much; now it’s our turn to give back.”
At Bill’s doorstep, Timothy refused payment. “I’ll make an online page soon,” he said eagerly. Timothy left with some photos of Bill and some detailed information.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
On arriving home, Timothy couldn’t wait to sit in front of his computer.

The following day, Bill opened his door to a crowd of familiar and new faces.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On arriving home, Timothy couldn’t wait to sit in front of his computer. Fingers flying across the keys, he poured his heart into creating the fundraising page. Photos of Bill—a soldier’s proud stance, callused hands repairing roofs, and the IV port’s stark—flooded the web page. “A man who dedicated his life to serving others now needs our help,” he wrote, the words pouring out of him like a rushing stream. Never had he felt such a strong urge to make a difference. With the page finally published, a sense of anticipation filled Timothy’s heart. What touched him most was that the donations flooded in within hours.
The following day, Bill opened his door to a crowd of familiar and new faces. Among them were his old neighbors who recognized him from the photos, along with people he’d never met but were touched by his story. “Look, we’re here with you.” Timothy patted Bill on the shoulder gently, showing Bill the increasing donations. Tears of gratitude welled up in Bill’s eyes as he took in the sight before him. It was then that Bill truly understood that it was the love and care from the community that could help him through the tough times. What he had given in his years of service had sown the seeds of love, now blooming in this outpouring of support.

4 Global Art Fairs to See in 2025
The art market rises and falls, but art fairs are forever. Here are some fairs coming up in 2025.
Art Dubai: Dubai, Apr. 18-20
Founded in 2007 Art Dubai usually features around 120 galleries, some 65 percent of which are from the Global South.
21. What is special about Art Dubai?
A. Its active interaction. B. Its electronic artworks.
C. Its cutting-edge collections. D. Its theme on photography.
22. Which fair has the longest history?
A. Art Dubai. B. Expo Chicago. C. Tokyo Gendai. D. Paris Photo.
23 What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain the work of artists. B. To make assessments on art market.
C. To recommend upcoming art fairs. D. To predict future development of art.

B. accurate blood typing is less important for blood transfusion now
C. the study of blood groups may help us better understand human evolution
D. the discovery of the MAL blood group system has no practical value
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Blood Types
B. The ABO Blood Group System
C. The Function of Blood Group Antigens
D. Scientists Discover a New Rare Blood Group System

On arriving home, Timothy couldn’t wait to sit in front of his computer.

As part of this series of lectures on the development of early humans today, we are looking at rock art. Rock art is found all over the world. And what is rather amazing is, well, let me give you an example. When our ancestors drew humans, they would often draw them as stick figures, but if they drew a face, then the eyes were almost stories, very open and wide.
