The popular saying has inspired many people to read or go sightseeing. Traveling just like reading, is a refreshing journey from the busy world. Books, brain food, can keep you company on your travel. On the Road, 1957, by Jack Kerouac The book is a globally popular spiritual guidebook about youth. The main character in the book drives across the US continent with several young people and finally reaches Mexico. After the exhausting and exciting trip, the characters in the book begin to realize the meaning of life. The book can be a good partner with you to explore the United States. Life Is Elsewhere, 1973, by Milan Kundera Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains (镣铐).” The book tells a young artist’s romantic but miserable life, about how he reads, dreams, and has a relationship. Experience the artist’s passionate life in the book during a trip to Central Europe. The book invites you to deeply reflect on your current life. Stories of the Sahara, 1967, by Sanmao The book narrates the author’s simple but adventurous life in the Sahara Desert, which seems a wild and dull place. The fancy natural scenery and life there along with the author’s romantic and intensive emotion will inspire you to explore the mysterious land. Lotus, 2006, by Annbaby This novel set in Xizang, tells three people’s stories, each with their unique characteristics. It shows modern people’s emotions and inner life, their confusion about love and exploration of Buddhism (佛教). The book is a good partner to bring you to the sacred (神圣的) land of Xizang. 1. What do the first two books have in common? A. They both talk about youth. B. They are both themed life meaning. C. They are both from an artist’s view. D. They are both about travelling in the US. 2. Which book could be a choice for people to Xizang? A. On the Road. B. Life Is Elsewhere. C. Stories of the Sahara. D. Lotus. 3. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To advertise four travel guidebooks. B. To arouse readers’ interest in traveling. C. To advise books to read while traveling. D. To show the popularity of four guidebooks. A 2. D 3. 根据Lotus, 2006, by Annbaby部分中“This novel set in Xizang, tells three people’s stories, each with their unique characteristics. 根据第一段中“You can either travel or read, but either your body or soul must be on the way. The popular saying has inspired many people to read or go sightseeing. Traveling just like reading, is a refreshing journey from the busy world. Books, brain food, can keep you company on your travel. C。 B It’s the last year of high school, and commonly young minds are turning their attention to the thought of leaving home. This seems a natural progression: parents have children and raise children; children graduate from high school and flee far from parents, returning on weekends to eat home-cooked meals. But what happens when a child loses home right before leaving? My family has lived in my home since I was two years old. Seventeen years later, as I got ready to leave for university, my parents decided that it was time to move. And naturally, I panicked. This was the place I used to run around with friends; where I got sunburned, chasing ants with sidewalk chalk; where I would sit for hours staring out, making up songs about the passersby. If we were to move, the new house wouldn’t be my home at all, just a strange, new place. After all, I’d be moving out to go to university. But something still wasn’t quite right. And then it hit me: this is what the move was really about. I wasn’t concerned about losing my childhood bedroom. What was bothering me was that I’d soon be completely responsible for myself. When I do go to university, I’ll go without a safe place to come home to. Of course I’ll have my family’s love and support, but I’ll never be able to go home again. As graduating high-school students, we’re all in love with the idea of going away and having wild adventures if we always have someplace to return to. Leaving the family home behind is really just growing up without a safety net. The move from one place in life to another is an important change. Because it’s true, you can never go home. Not really, however. Once you’ve had an adventure or two, you will still have a nice place to come back to for a nice visit, which is such a blessing. 4. How does the writer start the passage? A. By giving an answer to the question. B. By talking about adults’ experiences. C. By presenting a common phenomenon. D. By scolding the thought of leaving home. 5. What was the real reason behind the writer’s unwillingness to move? A. The responsibility of growing up. B. The strangeness of the new house. C. The loss of the childhood pleasure. D. The long years spent in the old home. 6. According to the last paragraph, how does the writer feel about returning home? A. Grateful. B. Adventurous. C. Depressed. D. Panicked. 7. What message does the passage convey? A. Parents’ love lights the path of life. B. Grow up and take on responsibilities. C. Leave home and follow your dreams. D. The outer world is full of adventures. C 5. A 6. A 7. 根据文章第一段中的“It’s the last year of high school, and commonly young minds are turning their attention to the thought of leaving home. This seems a natural progression: parents have children and raise children; children graduate from high school and flee far from parents, returning on weekends to eat home-cooked meals. But what happens when a child loses home right before leaving?(这是高中最后一年,通常青少年的思绪都会转向离家的念头。 根据第三段“And then it hit me: this is what the move was really about. I wasn’t concerned about losing my childhood bedroom. What was bothering me was that I’d soon be completely responsible for myself.(然后我突然明白了:这正是搬家的真正原因。 故选A项。 根据最后一段中“Because it’s true, you can never go home. Not really, however. Once you’ve had an adventure or two, you will still have a nice place to come back to for a nice visit, which is such a blessing.(虽然这确实是真的,你永远无法真正回到过去。 故选A项。 通读全文,尤其根据第三段“And then it hit me: this is what the move was really about. I wasn’t concerned about losing my childhood bedroom. What was bothering me was that I’d soon be completely responsible for myself.(然后我突然明白了:这正是搬家的真正原因。 C Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is sparking debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist. In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théâtre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney — an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts (提示). Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord Server on August 25, along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.” However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with prompts that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution (分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop. Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said. 8. What can we learn about Théâtre D’opéra Spatial? A. It contains a lot of written prompts. B. It is a masterpiece of a famous artist. C. It features classic painting styles more. D. It was originally made with an AI system. 9. Which can best describe many artists’ opinions about the competition result? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Neutral. 10. What does Paragraph 4 focus on? A What Théâtre D’opéra Spatial looks like. B. Where Théâtre D’opéra Spatial was printed. C. How Théâtre D’opéra Spatial was generated. D. Why Théâtre D’opéra Spatial won the competition. 11. What can be inferred about Allen from his words? A. He is happy to get so much attention. B. He recognizes the power of the debate. C. He advocates using technology for good. D. He hates the people behind the technology. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段中“His winning image, titled Théâtre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney — an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts.(他的获奖作品名为《太空歌剧院》,是由Midjourney人工智能系统制作的,该系统可以在输入书面提示时生成详细的图像)”可知,该作品最初由AI系统创作。 根据第三段中“it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image.(几天后,它在推特上迅速传播开来,许多艺术家对Allen的获奖感到愤怒,因为他使用了人工智能来创作这张照片)”可知,艺术家们对比赛结果持负面态度。 根据第四段“However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with prompts... Over time, ... he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution and had the images printed at a local print shop.(然而,Allen表示,为了得到最终提交至比赛的三幅作品,他花费了超过80个小时。 根据最后一段中““Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.(Allen说:“我们不应该憎恨这项技术或它背后的人,我们需要认识到它是一个强大的工具,并利用它来做好事,这样我们都能向前迈进。”)” C。 D Recent research has found that Martian soil contains all the essential nutrients necessary for growing rice, planetary scientist Abhilash Ramachandran reported at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, providing new possibilities for agriculture on the Red Planet. The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, tested simulated (模拟的) Martian soil to determine its suitability for growing rice. The researchers found that the soil contained all the essential nutrients needed for the crop to grow, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They also found that the pH level of the soil was within the preferable range for growing rice and that the soil was able to support the growth of healthy rice plants. However, it would be a bit challenging for the plants to survive in the soil that has perchlorate, a chemical that has been detected on Mars’ surface which can be toxic to plants. The team of researchers conducted an experiment to grow rice in soil containing perchlorate. They employed a wild rice variety and two genetically modified varieties, which were designed to tolerate environmental stressors such as drought, and tested them in Mars-simulated soil with and without perchlorate. The study revealed that a concentration of 3 grams of perchlorate per kilogram of soil resulted in no growth of rice plants. However, when the concentration was reduced to 1 gram per kilogram, one of the genetically modified lines successfully grew both a shoot and a root, while the wild variety was only able to grow a root. The discovery could be a game-changer for future missions to Mars, as it could enable astronauts to grow their own food on the planet, reducing the need for costly and complex resupply missions. In addition, studying the growth of plants on Mars could provide valuable insights into the potential for life on other planets and help scientists to better understand the conditions necessary for life to exist. 12. What is the main finding of the recent research on Martian soil? A. It is the same as the soil on earth. B. It is suitable for different kinds of crops. C. It contains all nutrients required for rice growth. D. It has a pH level supporting the growth of plants. 13. Which word can best replace the underlined word “toxic”? A. Harmful. B. Suitable. C. Important. D. Accessible. 14. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. Insights provided by scientists. B. Needs for future space missions. C. Potential for life on other planets. D. Benefits brought by the discovery. 15. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Time to Land on Mars! B. Martial Soil Could Grow Rice! C. Planting Rice: a Great Mission! D. Essential Nutrients Found on Mars! C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段“Recent research has found that Martian soil contains all the essential nutrients necessary for growing rice (最近的研究发现,火星土壤含有种植水稻所需的所有必需营养素)”以及第二段“The researchers found that the soil contained all the essential nutrients needed for the crop to grow, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. 根据第三段“However, it would be a bit challenging for the plants to survive in the soil that has perchlorate, a chemical that has been detected on Mars’ surface which can be toxic to plants. A. 故选A。 根据最后一段“The discovery could be a game-changer for future missions to Mars, as it could enable astronauts to grow their own food on the planet, reducing the need for costly and complex resupply missions. In addition, studying the growth of plants on Mars could provide valuable insights into the potential for life on other planets and help scientists to better understand the conditions necessary for life to exist. Technology is everywhere. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do. I thought that we would just be passing our dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner. As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared because some of them looked so dangerous, but I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned to serve the salad. I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and from different countries. Most of them wore torn and dirty clothes. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. However, it really saddened me to think of how many homeless people there were and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen. As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. I greeted each one with a warm “Hello” and asked them what kind of salad they would like. To my surprise, they responded just as kindly. They thanked me with smiles on their faces, and some even started brief conversations with me. I was so happy after the work, but it’s not just because I had earned my service hours. 46. want, require, happy, prepare, easy, hour, frightened, different, respond, mix, positive, wear I signed up for a soup kitchen to earn service hours ________ to graduate from high school. C Jason M. D Recent research has found that Martian soil contains all the essential nutrients necessary for growing rice, planetary scientist Abhilash Ramachandran reported at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, providing new possibilities for agriculture on the Red Planet. D.
