Indoor green spaces, even small ones, have benefits for our physical and mental well-being. Easy to care for and full of charm, these houseplants bring both beauty and wellness into our home.
Peace Lily
The name “peace lily” definitely evokes a sense of calm, but sensitive to drought and excessive heat. Peace lilies can live for years and continuously produce broad white flowers that resemble a peace flag. They’re easy to take care of and don’t need much light. Just keep them out of reach from pets and small children.
Rubber Plants
Rubber plants, also called rubber trees, make for great indoor houseplants. They’re generally easy to take care of and only need to be watered every week or so. They must be kept away from any pets and young children, as they’re known to be highly toxic when swallowed.
Elephant Ear Plants
If you want to spend a little more time with your houseplants, try elephant ear plants. Elephant ear plants are instantly recognizable by their big, heart-shaped leaves. One thing to watch out for: the leaves of this plant contain harmful elements that, when eaten, can cause symptoms such as blisters in the mouth, nausea and vomiting, and severe swelling of the tongue, mouth and eyes.
Snake Plants
Also known as mother-in-law’s tongues, the snake plant is known for having tall leaves that grow vertically. But there are many varieties of snake plants. Some have striking yellow accents; other types are long and curvy; and still others are cute and spiky. The plants should only be watered when the soil is dry. Keep them out of reach of pets, as they’re considered toxic to cats and dogs.
1. Which is the best option for those enjoying flowering plants?
A. Peace Lily. B. Snake Plant.
C. Elephant Ear Plants. D. Rubber Plants.
2. What is a feature of snake plants according to the text?

Shreya Vemulapalli, a junior at The Harker School, founded nonprofit Cancel. Cancer. Culture. (CCC) in 2023 to help reveal hidden stories on cancer and encourage open conversations.
Vemulapalli made up her mind to challenge how cancer is viewed after she lost her father to cancer. While many people hear about cancer survivor stories, the reality for many people like her father, is that not everyone beats cancer. Vemulapalli thought that the stories of people who lost their lives to cancer deserve to be shared and can comfort others going through the same experience. Having a community aids the journey through cancer.
A central focus of CCC is to cultivate this community and make it accessible for those experiencing cancer. The experience leaves cancer patients emotionally separated from their loved ones. Through CCC, Vemulapalli has received messages from those who have faced cancer, further stressing the widespread need for connection.
Reflecting on her own experience, Vemulapalli recalled how she kept her story private, in fear that it made her different. However, she said she now recognizes the importance in sharing her experience and encourages others to do the same.
Looking ahead, Vemulapalli is set to release an anthology (选集), which will feature stories from cancer patients and survivors, offering diverse perspectives on the disease. CCC plans to host and attend fundraising events to continue building its community and connect more people.
Though CCC isn’t for everyone, Vemulapalli’s mission is meant to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds. She works to demonstrate how one can overcome instead of being overcome in the face of grief and pain.
4. What motivated Vemulapalli to start CCC?
A. Her interest in medical research. B. A fundraising event she attended.
C. The death of her father from cancer D. Her school project on cancer awareness.
5. How does the community benefit cancer patients?
A. It helps them with medical advice. B. It entertains them with a pleasant travel.
C. It offers them a platform to share and connect. D. It encourages them to find a cure for the disease
6. What is Vemulapalli’s plan for the future?
A. She will raise money for cancer survivors. B. She hopes to expand the impact of CCC.
C. She will overcome all grief and pain. D. She aims to be a famous writer.
7. Which words can best describe Vemulapalli?
A. Traditional and cautious. B. Curious and competitive.
C. Independent and modest. D. Determined and inspiring.

Researchers have known for many years that there was more to ancient Greek and Roman statues than the plain white marble (大理石) you typically see in museums. Now, a researcher says there’s another aspect to these statues to consider: how they smelled.
Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were not just experienced visually. Cecilie Brons, a senior researcher of the Glyptoteket museum’s collection of ancient Greek and Roman art in Copenhagen, Denmark, says ancient texts provide evidence that statues were often scented with perfumes (香料), oils and waxes. “These scents (香味) could help promote the interaction between the image and the observer, without the use of touch,” Brens writes in her article.
A variety of flowers and herbs were used to make the perfumes, but evidence points to rose perfume being the most widely used type. Some old records show that people used nice-smelling oils on statues. On a Greek island called Delos, many stones with writing were found, and some of them list items like oils and perfumes.
It’s hard to find physical evidence of scents on statues, as the oils and waxes degrade over time. One exception is a statue of the Ptolemaic Queen Berenice II from the third century B.C. Brons said previous research did not detect a scent, but did detect evidence of beeswax spread on the statue.
Verity Platt, a professor at Cornell University’s Department of Classics who specializes in Greek and Roman art history and was not involved in the study, said that among experts in classical studies, the idea that statues were scented is already well-established. But given the attention the study has received, it’s clear many people hadn’t heard about the practice before.
8. Why were scents used in ancient sculptures according to Brons?
A. To show the artist’s high social status.
B. To stop viewers from touching the images.
C. To remove unpleasant smells from white marble.
D. To bridge the artwork and the visitors without touch.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The types of flowers and herbs.
B. The evidence of scenting statues.
C. The process of making perfumes.
D. The discovery of statues on Delos.
10. What does the underlined word “degrade” probably mean?
A. Break down. B. Show up.
C. Burn down. D. Mix up.
11. What does Verity Platt’s comment on the study suggest?
A. It receives little attention.
B. It is criticized by other professors.
C. It is the first to analyze scents on statues.
D. It has made the practice more widely known.

As climate change leads to more frequent and extreme weather events, water experts from around the world are urging greater use of digital technology to improve the management of dams and reservoirs (水库). At a recent international conference held during the 28th International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) Congress in Chengdu, China, experts emphasized the importance of modernizing dam systems to face new global challenges.
Michel Lino, president of ICOLD, mentioned the critical role of dams in dealing with global challenges. “We are facing common challenges,” he stressed. “Whether it is climate change, aging infrastructure, water shortage, environmental pressure or extreme weather events, they are not limited to one country or one region. These problems go beyond borders and call for collective solutions,” he emphasized. Lino also warned that the engineering standards of traditional dam design and construction are now being tested by emerging risks, including more intense floods driven by climate change.
China’s Vice Minister of Water Resources, Wang Baoen, also noted the vital role of dams in managing floods, providing water, and supporting ecosystems. “But in the face of increasingly extreme weather events, the growing impact of human activities and the rapid advancement of socioeconomic development, humanity is faced with significant global challenges in ensuring the high-quality development and safety of reservoirs,” Wang said.
To tackle these challenges, China has been using advanced information technology to improve dam monitoring and safety. One of China’s latest innovations is the development of “digital twins” — virtual models that simulate (模拟) the behavior and performance of dams under different conditions. These digital systems help engineers predict problems precisely. They are seen as a cutting-edge solution to improve dam design, operations and risk management.
Wang said China is committed to sharing its approaches and experience with the global community. Experts believe that through smarter technology, stronger regulations, and better global coordination, dams can continue to play a major role in addressing climate challenges and securing a sustainable future.
12. What is Michel Lino’s main point in Paragraph 2?
A. Global challenges require joint efforts worldwide.
B. Traditional dams can no longer deal with new issues.
C. Every country is to blame for extreme weather events.
D. Dams are primarily responsible for environmental issues.
13. Which challenge is mentioned by both Michel Lino and Wang Baoen?
A Severe environmental pressure.
B. Rapid development of economy.
C. Negative impact of human activities.
D. Increasingly extreme weather events.
14. How do digital twins help with dam management?
A. By imitating real dam performance.
B. By reducing risks of flooding.
C. By letting machines handle dam tasks.
D. By providing accurate predictions alone.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. International Cooperation for Shared Future
B. The Role of Dams to Address Climate Challenges
C. Global Call for Smart System in Dam Management
D. China’s Leadership in Digital Solutions for Reservoir Safety

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I came home from school and dropped my backpack on the floor. Before I could relax, my mom reminded me to finish any homework I had. Then she surprised me with exciting news — we were going to the night market! I jumped up and down with happiness.
At the night market, colorful lights and cheerful music surrounded us. When mom asked what I wanted to do first, I immediately pointed to a game where kids were throwing balls. As we got closer, I saw rows of fishbowls, each with a small fish swimming inside. My heart beat faster- I really wanted to play this game.
I asked the friendly stall (摊位) owner how it worked. He explained that for 2 RMB, I’d get one ball to throw. If it landed in a bowl, I’d win that fish. I turned to mom with hopeful eyes, but she shook her head. “Remember, we can’t have pets,” she said, “pets are a big responsibility.” I begged, promising to take good care of it.
The man smiled at mom and said, “Don’t worry ma’am. It’s actually very hard to win.” After some thought, mom agreed I could try once. “If you get it on your first try, you can keep the fish,” she said.
I studied the bowls carefully and noticed one with the most beautiful goldfish I’d ever seen. The little fish’s bright orange skin sparkled under the colorful lights. I knew I had to win that one. Taking a deep breath, I aimed carefully and threw the ball. Too nervous to watch, I squeezed my eyes shut.
Unexpectedly, I heard the man shout, “We have a winner!” My eyes flew open to see him holding out the bowl with my perfect goldfish. “I’m naming you Moebus!” I announced happily. I burst out laughing at Mom’s astonished expression — her eyes were wide and her mouth formed a little “o” shape. Holding Moebus, I suddenly realized that winning was easy, but keeping a promise to care for him would be harder.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When we got home, I told Mom not to worry.

I joined the basketball game and the relay race. I felt so excited and happy while playing with my friends. Through this event, I deeply realized that sports not only keep us healthy but also make school life more enjoyable. I hope you can experience something similar in your school!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】When we got home, I told Mom not to worry. I promised I would take full responsibility for Moebus. I found a clean and big glass jar, filled it with fresh water, and carefully transferred Moebus into his new home. Every day after school, I would rush to Moebus, feed him on time, and change his water regularly. I even decorated his jar with small stones and colorful shells. Mom gradually saw my dedication and started to believe I could take good care of the little fish. But one day, Moebus suddenly became less active and didn’t eat much either.
To save Moebus, I quickly searched “goldfish care” online for help. I learned that goldfish need clean water, proper food, and enough space. I followed the advice strictly. I bought a water-purifying device and high-quality fish food. I also enlarged Moebus’ living space by getting a larger fish tank. With my efforts, Moebus became more and more active. Mom was really impressed by my perseverance. From then on, I understood that winning a prize is just a momentary joy, but fulfilling a promise brings long-lasting satisfaction and growth.
