Early one morning, I opened the window to find that the sun was splashed everywhere. The sunshine warmed my face, making it comfortable. I started to play my beloved violin. My mind was quite focused, my spirit firm, and my mood entirely free of worry. When I was playing the climax to the piece, a sound from next door got my attention. I was fascinated and had a special idea: “How wonderful if we played together!” I began to play pieces by Beethoven with my neighbor, one piece after another. We played together so well that I was curious about how she or he looked. However, I couldn’t figure out why the violinist next door never responded when I knocked on the door. I was extremely disappointed. A year later, I took part in a violin competition. At the event, I made a new friend, whose name was Rita. This girl, who was my age, was deaf and dumb, but she had played the violin for eight years! I saw Rita carefully walk onto the stage. She put the violin between her neck and shoulder and began to perform. “The melody is so familiar!” I said to myself. It was unbelievable that a girl who was deaf and dumb could play such marvelous music. The audience warmly applauded her. What was even harder to believe was that the girl was my neighbor. It was fate that we should meet and become friends. Rita’s story made me realize that life is not always sunny or poetic; sometimes there are violent storms and setbacks. However, no matter what you suffer, believe in yourself and strive You can succeed. 21. Why was there no response every time the author knocked on his neighbor’s door? A. His neighbor had moved away. B. His neighbor meant to decline him. C. His neighbor was hearing-challenged. D. His neighbor was too excited to respond. 22. What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph? A. Nothing is difficult to a willing heart. B. Happiness exists in acceptance. C. A fall in the pit, a gain in your wit. D. Smile to life, and you’ll get a smile back. 23. Born in 1995 or later, a lot of Gen Z-ers are entering adulthood and will soon join the workforce. People of Generation Z have grown up with the Internet. Policy makers, sociologists, as well as employers and marketers, are trying their best to understand these young people. So, how should we pin down the Gen Z-ers? Most people will agree that the single biggest difference between Gen Z and other generations is how connected they are. This is a group of people who were hooked up to social media as soon as they were born. A recent Guardian article says that the average teenager in the UK has at least 150 followers on Instagram and spends around half an hour a day on Snapchat, an image messaging application. “We are the first true digital natives,” said Hannah Payne, an 18-year-old UCLA student and lifestyle blogger. “I can almost create a document, edit it, post a photo on Instagram and talk on the phone at the same time, all from the user-friendly interface(界面) of my iPhone.” The Guardian also notes that young people in the UK are becoming more active in politics. Voting is just one way of making one’s voice heard. Most of Generation Z are still to young to vote, says the Guardian. Instead of party politics, they focus more on single-topic issues such as feminism or climate change. And “much of the civil engagement and organizing they do takes place on social media rather than through traditional political structures”, according to the newspaper. 24. The underlined phrase “pin down” in the second paragraph can be replaced by ________. A. set an example to B. have an interest in C. give an explanation for D. make a decision on 25. A. how linked they are B. how enthusiastic they are C. how they communicate with each other D. how many hours they spend on the Internet 26. What do Instagram and Snapchat have in common? A. They are newly-created cellphones. B. They are popular among millennials. C. They are online games invented by teenagers. D. They are applications applauded by teenagers. 27. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Generation Z have great interest in politics. B. Most Gen Z-ers haven’t entered the political field. C. Voting is the only way of making yourself noticed. D. Voting on social media is the same as voting through traditional ways. C The circadian clock, more commonly known as the body clock, is an internal system that tells our bodies when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin(褪黑激素) circulating in a person’s blood at any given time. In a healthy sleeper, melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night, and then settle back down when it’s time to wake up. In our modern society, however, most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in may hours after sunrise if we could. And the trouble is, your melatonin levels may still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to grogginess. It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes(糖尿病),overweight and heart disease. Professor Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado in the US wanted to see if our body clocks can be reset by a short stay in nature. His team recruited(招募) 14 physically active volunteers in their 20s and 30s. Nine went on a weekend camping trip, while the other five stayed home. At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers’ body clocks had shifted to that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip. By comparison, the body clocks of the group that stayed home shifted even later over the course of the weekend. “This tells us we can reset our clocks fast,” Wright said. 28. Which of the following is TRUE about melatonin? A. When melatonin levels are high, we may feel very excited. B. When melatonin levels are low, it’s time to go to sleep. C. The amount of melatonin affects our body clock. D. Melatonin tells us when to go to sleep and to wake up. 29. What does the word “grogginess” mean in Paragraph 3? A. Sleepiness. B. Headache. C. Stomachache. D. Homesickness. 30. According to the passage, camping can ________. A. increase the amount of melatonin B. balance the hours of sleeping and waking up C. control the level of melatonin D. help shift the campers’ body clocks 31. What may be the best title for the text? A. Mention melatonin! B. Reset your body clock C. Melatonin and body clock D. Camp, if you can! D A recent report by the Ministry of Education shows that the Beijing dialect is declining among the younger generation. The news doesn’t come as a surprise though, as previous studies have highlighted the “dialect crisis” in other parts of China as well. He Hongzhi, of the Beijing Municipal Language Commission, owes this problem to migration and the promotion of Putonghua. “With rapid social development over recent years, an increasing number of migrants with different dialects can be found all over China. However, people are encouraged to speak Putonghua between each other, threatening the existence of dialects,” he told Beijing Daily. “For many Chinese who live outside their hometowns, dialect is an important symbol of identity and a constant reminder of where they come from,” commentator Li Yue wrote on Daily Sunshine. Dialects also reflect history and embody local culture. The Beijing dialect, for example, though being a language of the Han ethnic group, shows traces of Mongolian and Manchu languages. Mongolian and Manchu are ethnic groups who had ruled Beijing during the Yuan and Qing dynasties respectively. The Mongolian word hutong and the Manchu word Sachima (a common Chinese pastry) now appear in the Beijing dialect. To preserve these valuable parts of history, the State Language Commission has maintained databases since 2008 to cover different local dialects, while may areas such as Beijing, Shanhai and Zhejiang province have established museums dedicated to local dialects. But all these efforts are still not enough in keeping dialects from fading away. A more effective measure to keep them alive could be using elements such as pop songs and the “celebrity effect” to attract the young to use dialects. They need to realize that speaking their local dialect is something they can be proud of. 32. According to the passage, the Beijing dialect is declining because of ________. A. its little attraction B. differences and the promotion of Putonghua C. migration and the promotion of Putonghua D. rapid social development over recent years 33. Which of the following is TRUE about dialects? A. Dialects reflect a person’s hometown and education. B. Dialects play an important role in Chinese history and culture. C. Dialects make it hard for people to communicate with each other. D. The Beijing dialect is mainly a mix of Mongolian and Manchu languages. 34. We can infer from the text that ________. A. we should speak less Putonghua B. the young hate to speak their dialects C. the young may not realize the value of their dialects D. the celebrities should use more dialects in daily life 35. What’s the author’s attitude towards preserving dialects? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Negative. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Giving presentations is part of our educational or professional lives, whether we like it or not. A presentation is key to getting your message across, 36 So it’s advisable to brush up on the skills in quality presentations. Control your nerves. For years, Sally Chopping, a speech coach for the US training company Acting for Business, had feared the day she would draw a blank during a presentation. 37 “The audience doesn’t care if you mess up, and what they care about is what you are going to do about it,” Chopping said. “My nervousness went away when I concentrated not on myself, but instead just thought, ‘How is my speech going to help the audience?’ Once you do that, it gets rid of the fear. Every single step of the way, ask yourself; ‘What’s in it for them?’” 38 Doug Carter is the founder of Canada-based presentation skills training company Presentations Etc. When possible, he gets to the location of his presentation the day before to make sure all the electronic aids work. 39 In addition, build an exit plan before you present your presentation. Having a point from which you know you can conclude your main idea helps when approaching the end of the allowed time, or if you are given an unexpected five-minute warning. Engage the audience. Whether you’ve got a one-on-one talk or a speech in front of 400 people, think “storytelling”. 40 The way to a person’s head is through their heart. Sometimes all it takes is a few seconds to connect an audience member with a story. Moreover, the hardest thing for people to do is say nothing, although it can be an effective tool. If you’ve got something people should read, pause and let them read it. A. Think more. B. Be prepared. C. Stories are powerful because they combine data and information with emotion.
