Different from Earth Day which falls on April 22 every year, Earth Hour has been known for its
“lights off” moment. On March 22, 2025, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, millions turned off their lights
to show they cared about the Earth. This year’s Earth Hour, with the theme(主题 ) “Create the
Biggest Hour for Earth”, was even more important because it shared the same day as World Water
Day. However, it’s not enough to have such an hour every year. What matters is how we can be
初二英语试卷 第 2 页 (共 4 页)
kinder to the earth every day.
Planet-friendly food
You might not realize it, but the meat industry has a huge influence on forests around the world.
Large numbers of trees are cut down to make space for soy(大豆) and other plants that are used to
feed animals. Have a chat with your parents about going meat-free, even for a few days every week.
Also, foods like vegetables, fruit and nuts are helping the planet.
Go green and save money, too
Electricity(电 ) produced by burning fuels like oil, coal and gas causes global warming and
pollution. Ask your parents how they heat your home and suggest using green energy like wind or
solar power(太阳能 ). Another tip is to remember to turn off the electricity whenever you leave a
room. Cutting down on screen time is actually good for both your health and the earth.
Waste Less, Help more
Waste is a big problem! We’ve talked about saving electricity. What about food waste? Every
year, 1.3 billion kilograms of food is wasted around the world. That’s one-third of the total amount,
which can feed up to 1.26 billion people. Try to talk to your parents about buying proper amount of
food. More importantly, find some ways online for leftover food at home.
19. Which is the poster of this year’s Earth Hour?
A. B. C. D.
20. Why is this year’s Earth Hour more important than usual?
A. A great number of people in the world turned off lights.
B. The theme is “Create the Biggest Hour for Earth”.
C. It was on the same day as World Water Day.
D. More people decide to be kinder to the earth.
21. Which of the following activities helps the earth?
A. John: I plan to eat more beef because it is good for my health.
B. Mary: I often forget to turn off lights when I leave the rooms.
C. Kate: We heat our homes by using the solar power in winter.
D. Harry: My parents always buy a lot more food than we need.
22. Why did the writer write the passage?
A. To introduce fun facts about Earth Hour. B. To tell us how to help the earth every day.
C. To give us advice about saving electricity. D. To compare Earth Day with Earth Hour.

The sun was still shining when I got home from school, but Dad wasn’t back yet. As usual, he
was out cleaning pools all over Florida. Mom always made us wait for him before dinner. I didn’t
mind the wait because it meant more time playing basketball with my younger brother.
Two years ago, Dad bought us a basketball hoop(篮筐). He put it up on our driveway(车行道).
The “court(球场)” wasn’t perfect - just dirt(泥土) and small stones - but we loved it. Every day after
school, we practiced different shots. There was something special
about playing basketball. When I shot the ball, all my problems
seemed to go away.
Dad told me he felt the same way about cleaning pools. He said
making dirty water clean was like magic. But recently, he looked
tired and worried. Many customers stopped paying because of the
pandemic(流行病). One evening, Dad came home earlier than usual,
looking very tired.
“Dad, want to play basketball with us?” I asked.
He smiled and said, “Okay, but just for a little while before dinner.”
We decided to play H-O-R-S-E. Dad still used his old way of shooting with two hands. My
brother and I shot with one hand. Dad was really good. He almost never missed!
As the sun went down, we kept playing. Dad missed one easy shot when a bird flew by. I
thought maybe he missed on purpose to make my brother happy.
Then Mom told us dinner was ready.
“Time to eat,” Dad said. “Maybe another game tomorrow.”
Inside, we could smell Mom’s cheese. My brother kept bouncing the ball until Dad playfully
tapped(轻拍) his head.
For that short time playing basketball, Dad looked happy again. I wished we could do this every
day. When we play together, everything feels perfect - just like when the ball goes straight through
the net without touching the rim.
23. How did the writer feel about waiting for his dad before dinner?
A. He was angry because he was hungry. B. He thought it was a waste of time.
C. He enjoyed it as he could play basketball. D. He would rather have dinner alone.
24. What does the underlined phrase “on purpose” mean in the sentence?
A. 偶然地 B. 困难地 C. 匆忙地 D. 故意地
25. What can we infer(推断) about the father from the story?
A. He disliked basketball but played to make his sons happy.
B. He planned to give up his job and became a basketball coach.
C. He thought his sons needed a better basketball court.
D. He got stress from work but found joy with his family.
26. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. The Happiness of Family Dinner B. Family Love Helps Through Difficult Times
C. Practice Makes Perfect D. How to Win at H-O-R-S-E Every Time

In China, many young people are starting to collect things that others
throw away. From bubble tea cups to train tickets, they are keeping these small
items(物品) as treasures. This habit is sometimes called “grandma-core(奶奶风
囤 物 )” because it reminds them of how their grandparents used to save
everything for future use.
Many young people once wondered why their parents and grandparents
kept so many things. But now, they find themselves doing the same. A common saying among them
is: “First, we question our moms. Then, we understand our moms. Finally, we become our
moms.”
Luo Jiayi, a 20-year-old college student, is a perfect example. He loves milk tea and has
collected many takeout(外卖食品 ) bags from his favorite drinks. Some bags are reused as gift

wrap(礼品包装纸), while others become craft(手工艺) projects or even trash bags. “Many students
do this,” he said. “Special bags with movie or game designs are especially popular at school.”
However, keeping these items can be a problem, especially in small dorm rooms. Still, young
people find creative ways to reuse(再利用 ) them. On apps like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, young
people proudly share how they turn “trash” into useful items. For example: A takeout bag becomes a
pencil case. A coffee cup sleeve(套) becomes a book cover. Thermal food packaging(保温食品袋) is
reused as a lunch bag. Shoe boxes are not thrown away but are reused as storage(存储) boxes.
Another student, 19-year-old Lu Yunli, collects pretty packaging because she loves beautiful
things. “Bringing a nice bag to class with my lunch makes me happy,” she said. “These designs are
getting more and more attractive.”
For young people, saving isn’t about being cheap—it’s about being ▲ . They spend
money on things they love but avoid(避免 ) waste. By reusing and recycling, young people are
creating a lifestyle that is both practical and creative.

29. Which of the following can be put in “For young people, saving isn’t about being cheap—it’s
about being ▲ .

30. How does the writer organize the article?
