It helped to kick-start Dickens’s career, and continues to excite readers’ imaginations today. Picturing Pickwick explores the illustrations of this incredible book, which began with the cooperation between Dickens and the illustrator Robert Seymour. The exhibition, which runs from 6th April 2024 to 11th September 2024, explores the relationship between Dickens and his illustrators, and includes original illustrations of The Pickwick Papers, a page of the original manuscript, and historic monthly instalments (连载) of the story, some of which was penned here at 48 Doughty Street. The exhibition showcases a series of works by Anna Marongiu, an Italian artist who created 262 illustrations of The Pickwick Papers between 1928 and 1929. These rich artworks picture scenes from the novel that have rarely been illustrated. This is the first time they have been on display in the UK to celebrate the unique talent of Marongiu, whose own life was cut short in 1941 by a plane crash when she was just 34. Her Pickwick series was given to the Charles Dickens Museum by her family in the 1980s. The Pickwick Papers caused a sensation when it was published, inspiring ‘Pickwick Clubs’ and societies to be set up in honour of the work. The exhibition features items including an 1837 Pickwick Club MinuteBook, which records the debates of one such society. The display will also note the international reaction to the novel, exploring how the story came to Italy, where it would inspire such incredible artistry within Marongiu. The exhibition, which runs from 6th April 2024 to 11th September 2024, explores the relationship between Dickens and his illustrators, and includes original illustrations of The Pickwick Papers, a page of the original manuscript, and historic monthly instalments (连载) of the story, some of which was penned here at 48 Doughty Street.(Picturing Pickwick探索了这本令人难以置信的书的插图,这始于狄更斯和插画家罗伯特・西摩的合作。 根据第三段“The exhibition showcases a series of works by Anna Marongiu, an Italian artist who created 262 illustrations of The Pickwick Papers between 1928 and 1929.(展览展示了意大利艺术家安娜・马隆吉乌的一系列作品,她在1928年至1929年间为《匹克威克外传》创作了262幅插图。)” B After a three-year hiatus(间隙), famous Chinese video influencer Li Ziqi restarted posting online with two new videos on November 12, 2024. The videos were shared by her across social media platforms, including Douyin, Sina Weibo, and YouTube and quickly became the top trended topic online, with her Douyin uploads alone gaining over 2 million likes and nearly 200,000 comments in just two hours. One newly uploaded video showed how she turned a woodshed into a woodland cloakroom, and the other showed her craft using the intangible cultural heritage Chinese lacquerware (漆器)techniques. Five and a half hours after release, the video of the lacquerware has gained 100 million views on Sina Weibo, with a total of 1.6 million interactions, including shares, comments, and likes. Many netizens have flooded the comment area with messages of support and expressed how much they missed her content under her videos. “We’ve missed you so much and have been waiting for these three years. We hope you stay strong and keep moving forward,” a Weibo user wrote. Another fan on YouTube commented, “After years, your videos are back. I really missed your videos, you and your grandmother. Whenever I watch your videos, I feel relaxed,” echoing the affection of many of her followers. Li started posting short videos on Sina Weibo in 2016, featuring poetic portrayals(描写) of rural life, traditional cooking techniques, and cultural practices, such as making ink and clothing. In 2020, Li set a Guinness World Record for the most subscribers on a Chinese-language YouTube channel, with a total of 11.4 million followers at the time. Despite not updating her content since July 14, 2021, she has seen her followers increase and fans request new videos during her absence. In her latest Weibo post, she wrote a comment, “No time for a small essay today, I’ll catch up with everyone after I finish my busy schedule. Miss you!” 4. She needs to improve her content quality to attract views. C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第二段中“One newly - uploaded video showed how she turned a woodshed into a woodland cloakroom, and the other showed her craft using the intangible cultural heritage Chinese lacquerware (漆器) techniques.( 最近上传的一段视频展示了她如何将木棚变成林地衣帽间,另一段视频展示了她使用非物质文化遗产中国漆器技术的工艺。)” 根据第二段中“Many netizens have flooded the comment area with messages of support and expressed how much they missed her content under her videos.( 许多网友在评论区留言支持她,并表达了对她视频内容的怀念。)”以及粉丝在微博和 YouTube 上的评论,如 “We’ve missed you so much and have been waiting for these three years.( 我们非常想念你,已经等了三年了。)”和 After years, your videos are back. I really missed your videos, you and your grandmother.( 多年后,你的视频又回来了。 根据最后一段中“Despite not updating her content since July 14, 2021(尽管自2021年7月14日以来她就没有更新过她的内容)”说明她在 2021 年 7 月 14 日之后就没有更新内容了,所以 C 选项“She frequently updates the video content and always maintains interaction with the audience.(她经常更新视频内容并始终与观众保持互动)”是最不可能的原因。 根据文章大意以及最后一段“Despite not updating her content since July 14, 2021, she has seen her followers increase and fans request new videos during her absence. In her latest Weibo post, she wrote a comment, “No time for a small essay today, I’ll catch up with everyone after I finish my busy schedule. C Over the past 40 years, neuroscience researchers have begun to build a remarkably accurate picture of what exactly happens in the brain during adolescence. One area of research has been neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) — that is, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. During childhood, the brain’s 86 billion neurons create numerous connection patterns. Each time we learn to do something, neural pathways are created that allow us to repeat and improve upon the action. By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become “fixed”, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger “fixed” connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively. However, the disappearance of other less-used connections reduces the brain’s “flexibility”. As a result, adults find it harder to master new skills or remember unfamiliar information. It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous “plasticity” — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorizing things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language. Recent research has even shown that a person’s IQ, which was previously thought to be unchanging, can improve in the teen years! Research has also shown a further difference in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of teenagers and adults. The PFC is the area of the brain that’s responsible for abstract thinking. Its functions include planning, predicting the results of actions as well as regulation of emotion, and focusing on goals. Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices. Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 8. What happens to neural pathways as individuals grow from children to adults? A. Some become strengthened through frequent use. B. Some disappear as new connections are formed. C. They increase in number but decrease in strength. D. They remain highly flexible throughout adulthood. 9. What does higher brain plasticity mean to teenagers? A. They are more intelligent than adults. B. They are more interested in learning. C. They do better in learning and memorizing. D. They can speak a language better than adults. 10. How are teenagers influenced by the PFC? A. They adapt to new surroundings easily. B They act without much consideration. C. They are likely to make good choices. D. They can get good control of their emotions. 11. What is Dr Daniel Siegel’s opinion? A. Adolescence is the most challenging period of life. B. Teenagers’ brain development is slow but smooth. C. It is beneficial to study the development of teenagers’ brains. D Teenagers should be given more liberty and independence. A 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段中“By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become ‘fixed’, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger ‘fixed’ connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous ‘plasticity’ — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorizing things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language. 根据第四段中“Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices. 根据最后一段“Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills. D American YouTube star IShowSpeed, famously nicknamed “Jiakang Ge” for his high-energy live streams, recently introduced 37 million global fans to modern China during his visit from March 24 to 28, 2025. This cultural exchange sparked global discussions. Fans applauded those moments like IShowSpeed singing the viral Chinese song “Sunshine Rainbow White Horse” with locals. While some questioned if scenes were staged in advance, most agreed that his authentic reactions revealed everyday life in China. Officials described the visit as “people-to-people diplomacy,” and foreign audiences acknowledged that it “bypasses political biases to showcase real China. 12. If so, you might benefit from trying one of these three methods to help manage overthinking, and allow your mind to rest: ●Schedule a “thinking time” ____16____ This time could be spent going through any worries, considering any problem-solving, or just thinking about what you need. And if something crops up outside this time, you can try to set it aside until your “thinking time”, so that it doesn’t affect your mood. ●____17____ The more you actively tell yourself not to think about something, the more impossible it becomes to consider anything else. Instead, redirect your attention elsewhere. If you’re watching TV and your mind wanders into worries, grab a book, call a friend, or ask someone to play a board game. ____18____However, shaking up what you’re interacting with can help the overthinking from sticking. ●Physically let things go. ____19____ First, write a list of all the things bothering you, divided into what you can control, and what you can’t. Tear the list of uncontrollable things up, or put it in the bin! Seeing what you can’t control clearly can help loosen the hold these worries have on you, and leave you with a list you can actively work on. Second, if you’re not even sure how to write that list, simply write down everything that’s concerning you. ____20____ Again, you could destroy the page when you’re done as a means of symbolically letting go. A. Change course. B. See the “bigger picture”. C. It doesn’t really matter what you do. D. There are two ways journaling can help with this. E. Write down five things that have gone right over the past week and your role in them. F. When it’s in writing, it’s easier to see what’s worth your worrying, and what isn’t. G. Setting aside time for space with your thoughts can help stop your worries from affecting the rest of your day. G 17. A 18. C 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据标题“Schedule a “thinking time” (安排思考时间)”和下文的“This time could be spent going through any worries, considering any problem-solving, or just thinking about what you need. And if something crops up outside this time, you can try to set it aside until your “thinking time”, so that it doesn’t affect your mood. 【17题详解】 根据下文的“The more you actively tell yourself not to think about something, the more impossible it becomes to consider anything else. Instead, redirect your attention elsewhere. If you’re watching TV and your mind wanders into worries, grab a book, call a friend, or ask someone to play a board game. 【18题详解】 根据上文的“The more you actively tell yourself not to think about something, the more impossible it becomes to consider anything else. The house was near the pretty blue sea and had tall coconut palms (椰子树) with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell, the kids would break them open and drink the coconut water. Colin really enjoyed being there. He liked to play with the rabbits running around the trees. He would go fishing with his friends. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place. During his winter break, Colin was surprised when he arrived at his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. “Grandpa, where did all the trees go?” Colin asked. “People cut them down for wood, to use as fuel and make furniture,” Grandpa replied. Grandpa’s house was different. He never let anyone cut down his trees. He loved and hugged each palm tree in his yard. He also named two big trees near the front door Strength and Hope. He had planted them himself, and now they had grown tall and strong. One night, Colin woke up because he heard a strange sound. He quickly ran to his grandfather. Grandpa shouted, “It’s an earthquake!” They ran outside the house and saw the sea rising. People were shouting, screaming, and crying. The waves kept getting higher. Huge waves crashed into Grandpa’s house. They covered Colin and Grandpa and then went back into the sea, taking everything in their way. Grandpa held Colin’s hand tightly, but another big wave came and separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and held onto Strength. He called out to Colin but couldn’t see him. Grandpa climbed up the coconut tree and held on tight while the sea was all around. “Colin, Colin!” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared. Come to me quickly.” “Oh Grandpa, I can’t reach you!” A wave carried Colin around, and to his surprise, he found himself next to the familiar tree, Hope. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day on, Colin and his grandfather valued Strength and Hope more. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】A wave carried Colin around, and to his surprise, he found himself next to the familiar tree, Hope. He quickly grabbed onto one of its strong branches. The waves still crashed around him, but the tree held firm. Colin looked around desperately, hoping to see his grandfather. Then he heard Grandpa’s voice calling him from the other tree, Strength. With all his might, Colin clung to the branch and tried to move towards his grandfather. Inch by inch, he made his way through the raging waters. Finally, he reached Strength and climbed up to join his grandfather. They hugged each other tightly, relieved to be together again. From that day on, Colin and his grandfather valued Strength and Hope more. They knew that these two trees had saved their lives. They also realized the importance of trees in protecting the village from natural disasters. Colin decided to plant more trees with his grandfather. They worked hard every day, digging holes and watering the young saplings. Other villagers were inspired by their actions and joined them. The trees not only provided shade and fruit but also became a symbol of hope and strength for everyone in the village. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抓住:grabbed/ grasped ②到达:reached /got to ③拥抱:hugged/ embraced 情绪类 ①绝望地:desperately/ hopelessly ②鼓舞:inspired/ motivated 【点睛】[高分句型1] Colin looked around desperately, hoping to see his grandfather.(运用了非谓语动词中的现在分词作状语。) [高分句型2] The trees not only provided shade and fruit but also became a symbol of hope and strength for everyone in the village.(运用了not only…but also… 1. B. They act without much consideration. D. Teenagers should be given more liberty and independence. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
