Dear editor,
I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we held on whether we should devote whole
lives to one thing. 40% of my classmates express that they can’t understand why some
people spend their whole life doing just one thing, while 60% admire those people
who devote their whole lives to one thing.
I whole - heartedly admire those who dedicate their entire lives to a single pursuit.
First of all, devoting oneself to one thing can lead to unparalleled expertise and mastery.
When a person focuses all their energy and efforts on a particular field, they have the
opportunity to explore every aspect, which will allow them to accumulate a vast amount of
knowledge and skills. For instance, take the great scientist Yuan Longping for example. He
dedicated his whole life to the research of hybrid rice. Through countless experiments and
efforts, he not only solved the food problem for a large number of people in China but also
made significant contributions to global food security.
Secondly, a lifelong commitment to one thing can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose.
When people are passionate about a particular cause or activity, working on it for a lifetime
gives them a clear direction in life. A good example is the famous painter Vincent van Gogh.
Although he faced many hardships and setbacks in his life and didn't gain much recognition
during his lifetime, he never gave up his love for painting. His dedication to painting gave his
life meaning, and today, his works are celebrated around the world, inspiring countless people.
In conclusion, I believe that devoting one's whole life to one thing is a noble and
admirable choice. It can lead to great achievements and a deeply fulfilling life.

A few suggestions are listed as follows. SLEEP FOR MORE THAN EIGHT HOURS! Make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep and plenty of rest. Don’t believe that you can always “catch some sleep or rest later.” Your body cannot make up for lost sleep or rest time because it is not physiologically possible. SET STRICT FAMILYTIME! Resolve(决意) to make Saturdays and Sundays strictly for family time. And stick to this! Mondays until Fridays you make an excuse not to relax and spend time with your family because it’s work time, why not make a similar excuse for Saturdays and Sundays? “I can’t work today because I’m spending time with my family.” GET SOME FOOD IN! Make sure you get food in your stomach. Workaholics are known to be food-skippers. If you can’t afford to get off your desk or from doing paperwork, have food delivered to you. It’s always a good idea if you have crackers (薄脆饼) on your drawer to ease the hunger pain. CONFINE WORK! Resolve to confine work in your office. Don’t bring work to your home! Keep those files in your office desk where they belong. Practice working only within your working hours. If you have an eight-to-five working schedule, stick to it. WORK UP THOSE MUSCLES! Exercise, exercise, exercise! Set aside at least an hour each day or every other day for exercise. Your body needs to be conditioned, and working non-stop isn’t going to give it the proper physical conditioning it needs. Since most workaholics tend to have their behinds stuck on their chairs, it’s even more important that you get some exercise. MAKEA PLAN! Plan your day. Work on only one or two things at a time. It’s much easier to work on something and finish it first and then move on to the next rather than do a number of things all at the same time and never finish or accomplish anything at the end of the day. Make out a list of priorities (优先权). Write down things that need to be worked on immediately or are urgent, keeping the least ones at the bottom of your list. After you’ve done this, be guided by this list. Turning this activity into a habit will also help you manage your time better, be more organized, and accomplish more. 51. The passage is intended for _. A. those who are hardworking B. those who keep themselves healthy and alive C. those who consider work the center of their life D. those who live a busy, successful and happy life 52. According to the passage, which of the following is not mentioned as a practical tip for a workaholic? A. Don’t have your behinds stuck on your chairs. B. Make sure of time available for your family. C. Make up for lost sleep whenever possible. D. Don’t be food-skippers. 53. The underlined word “confine” in paragraph 5 possibly means _. A. improve B. start C. practice D. restrict 54. By making a plan, the author means _. A.finishing a number of things at once B. working on only one or two things each day C. organizing your time and finishing urgent things first D. accomplishing as much work as possible at any given moment 55. If there were one more tip, it could be _. A. LIVE TO WORK B. WORK TO LIVE C. MAKE WORK YOUR LIFE D. STOP TO ENJOYWORKING 高二英语试卷 第 5 页(共 8页) B One day, I was sitting in a local coffee shop, and staring at this man in a wheelchair. He could move his head and parts of his fingers but nothing else. He had a servant who cut up his food and placed it on a special mechanically powered fork that he would use to eat. He saw me staring at him and invited me to join him at his table. His name was Stephen. For several hours we sat at that table and we got to know each other on a deeply personal level. I had never known a man who was more radiant (容光焕发), more energizing to talk and get to know than Stephen. Stephen used to be a very successful businessman in Denver. He was in the natural gas business. Thirteen years before, when he was forty, he was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery to occur any moment. He said, “I had so much nervous energy. I saw the storm clouds gathering, and I decided to clean out the gutters (檐沟)rather than sitting around waiting for this gas well to come in.” He climbed up the ladder to clear the piles of pine needles on the roof. As he backed up, he accidentally fell off the roof. He landed on his back. He was paralyzed (瘫痪) for the rest of his life, except for his head and his hand. I asked him, “How do you do it all? How do you suddenly stop hiking, fishing, and running marathons?” He said, “There are three things you have to do when something like this happens. The first thing you have to do is adjust. The second thing you do is adjust. And the third thing you do is adjust.” He said, “By adjusting to your abilities, Bill, you have to change your self-expectations. If you can’t be a physical athlete any longer, then perhaps you can be a spiritual athlete.” He was. 56. The author noticed Stephen at the coffee shop because_. One should give up all hope and accept the new situation. B. One should find a completely new hobby immediately. C. One should adjust to the new abilities and change self - expectations. D. One should try to go back to the old way of life as soon as possible. C People often wonder why some entrepreneurs have greater success than others. Is it habits, connections, luck, work ethic or any other behavior? I believe the key to success is willpower. Willpower is the ability to control yourself. It is a strong determination that allows you to do 高二英语试卷 第 6 页(共 8页) something difficult. It is a behavior we are born with more than one we learn; however, it is possible to not only learn it, but also strengthen it with constant exercise. Willpower is just like a muscle; to keep it strong you need to constantly exercise it. People with a great amount of willpower have the discipline to develop positive, successful habits. Even with an incredible amount of talent, without the discipline and motivation to create positive habits, it can be difficult to achieve success. Willpower and habits go hand in hand. It is critical to create good habits and take the actions necessary to stick to those habits day in and day out for greater success. Almost half of our daily actions are part of our habits and not decisions, so once the correct habits are in place, you will automatically perform those tasks on a day-to- day basis. The best way to create and stick to a habit is to have strong motivation. It’s easier to change your habits to lose weight if you have a health issue and you want to be around longer for your kids, or if your business is something you’re passionate about. Having a valuable outcome associated with a habit will help you stick to that habit permanently. The art of self-control is one that most successful individuals have mastered. Self-control enables you to avoid behaviors that don’t contribute to your success and adopt those that do. Because there is a delayed satisfaction associated with self-control, it can be easy to get off track. However if you work on sticking to those small positive habits one day at a time, it becomes easier to stay strong and achieve that delayed reward. Once a reward is achieved, it is much easier to continue sticking to your habits. 61.What does the author say we need to do to strengthen our willpower? A.Keep it under control. B.Apply it continuously. C.Learn from entrepreneurs. D. Aim at success determinedly. 62. .How are almost half of our daily actions performed according to the passage? A. Out of habit. B.With determination. C. Like muscle building. D.By self-discipline 63.What will help people stick to doing something constructive automatically? A.Practising it on a day-to-day basis. B.Associating it with improving health. C.Possessing a reasonable amount of talent. D.Foreseeing the desired outcome it will produce. 64.How does the art of self-control help us succeed? A.By allowing us to remain clear-headed permanently. B.By enabling us to alter our behaviors constantly. C.By enabling us to take positive actions. D.By allowing us to avoid taking risks. 65.Why can it be difficult for us to maintain self-control? A.Most of us are not in the habit of exercising self-control. B.We may not get immediate rewards from self-control. C.Self-control tends to be associated with pains. D.Self-control only brings about small benefits. D Human beings tend to follow the pack. Why is that? Dr. Gregory Berns tried to answer the question in an experiment. Berns gathered some people for a test. The test was simple—to mentally rotate(转动) some 3-D shapes and compare them to see whether they were the same or different. First, the volunteers wrote down their answers privately. But then they had to give the next series of 高二英语试卷 第 7 页(共 8页) answers out loud for everyone to hear. But this test came with a surprise. One of the participants, Jocelyn, had the answers in her hand. Everyone else had been told to follow her lead, except for Tony. He was being set up to see whether he would follow the pack. When the group gave the right answer, Tony agreed. And when everyone gave the wrong answer, Tony still agreed. Tony wasn't alone. Berns put seven other unsuspecting test subjects on the hot seat. Barbara, for example, got 70 percent on the written test, but her score fell to 30 percent when she listened to others’ answers. David and Graham, unlike the others, gave the right answers, even when the group didn't. Berns wanted to see what was happening in the brain during his experiment. Using an fMRI, Berns found that, during the moment of decision, his subjects’ brains lit up not in the area where thinking takes place, but in the back of the brain, where vision is interpreted. Essentially, their brains were misinterpreting messages —people actually believed what others told them they were seeing, not what they saw with their own eyes. And for those who went against the group, there was another interesting result: Their brains lit up in a place called the amygdala, which Berns calls “the fear center of the brain.”“And what we are seeing here, we think, is the fear of standing alone,” Berns said. So why do people follow the pack no matter how ridiculous(荒唐的) it seems? Perhaps it's not so much about right and wrong. It might be that our brain gets confused between what it sees and what others tell us. Just knowing that might help us guard against it. 66. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The result of the experiment. B. How the experiment was conducted. C. Why Dr. Gregory conducted the experiment. D. The science behind why people follow the pack. 67. What do we know about Tony after he listened to the majority? A. He ignored the truth. B. His test scores improved. C. He realized his mistakes. D. His teamwork spirit was inspired. 68. What led to Barbara’ s behavior in the experiment? A. A part of her brain that controls fear was activated. B. A part of her brain that controls vision got confused. C. A part of her brain that controls thinking shut down. D. A part of her brain that controls language got mixed up. 69. What might be David and Graham's worry according to Berns? A. Copying others’ behaviors. B. Giving the wrong answers. C. Failing to fit in with the group. D. Misunderstanding the rules. 70. What is the best title for the text? A. Why Should We Stand by Our Own Beliefs? B. Why Is It Hard to Tell Right from Wrong? C. Why Is It Wise to Take Advice? D. Why Do People Follow the Crowd? 第 II卷(非选择题,共 35分) 第一部分:阅读表达(共 5小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分) Do you think cookies can tell stories? Jasmine Cho, 35, does. A baker, artist, entrepreneur and activist, Cho tries to spread knowledge about social justice issues and diversity through the delicious medium of cookies. It was in high school that she discovered her love of baking. At a sleepover a friend taught her how to make a dessert, “sort of demystifying baking and that whole process”. 高二英语试卷 第 8 页(共 8页) Later, Cho realized her second passion: learning more about her Asian, American culture. An elective in college that taught Asian-American immigrant experiences brought an emotional moment for her. “So many emotions came up that I just couldn’t articulate. It was like this mix of anger, of relief, empowerment, sadness...” Cho said. Cho realized she could combine these two passions to educate others about influential Asian American people and showcase matters that were important to her. With her online bakery, she designed cookie portraits about people she admired and posted the images on Instagram. “I don’t think I ever really knew how to communicate these stories until I found cookies,” Cho said. “Cookies are just so disarming. Who doesn’t like cookies?” One cookie that Cho has identified with deeply is one she made of George Helm, a Hawaiian activist in the 1970s. “It’s insane the amount of injustice that the native Hawaiian population has faced as well through the whole annexation (吞并) of the kingdom. There were so many horrific stories that I heard about nuclear testing and the fallout( 核爆炸后的沉降物 )impacting native Hawaiian populations in all of this,” Cho said, “George Helm was one of those activists who really represented the spirituality of the native Hawaiians and the connection to their land, to nature.” Among her amazing cookie art are other political figures such as Larry Itliong, a Filipino-American labor organizer, and pop culture figures such as Keanu Reeves, a Canadian actor. Cho hopes her cookie art continues to inspire people to be creative and think positively. “Instead of trying to think of something new and original, just look inward and see, maybe there’s already a passion or a love that you have,” Cho said. “Use that for something that will serve the world in a better way.” 71.What inspired Cho to take an interest in Asian-American culture?(No more than 10 words) 72.What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 mean? (No more than 3 words) 73.Why does Cho think cookies are a useful tool to promote Asian-American culture?(No more than 10 words) 74.What is the author’s dream about her cookies art?(No more than 10 words) 75.How are you inspired by the story? Put it in your own words.(No more than 25words) 第二部分:书面表达(满分 25分) 76 . Dear editor, I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we held on whether we should devote whole lives to one thing. Your train will be ready for boarding in fifteen minutes.
