I have always been a design enthusiast and painting something never fails to fill me up with joy. Once I took my brother’s old shoes and started my creation on them on a casual afternoon. He had almost decided to throw them away, but that was when I picked them up, thinking to give it a shot with the pictures. When my brother saw the final piece, he decided to wear the shoes again.
The concept, Upcycling Is A Fun Process, occurred to me that day. I understood that if I can give a makeover to certain things, they’ll be of use again and there is nothing better than returning the use to something while protecting nature.
I shared my work online and started making notebooks, bookmarks, and name signs. Gradually I sharpened my skills. For almost a year, I have been trying my hand at upcycling things such as shoes, bags, T-shirts and so on, for many people. I make over things in different ways to suit the needs of their future owners; that is what I put before everything else in most of my works.
I see upcycling as an opportunity to give a makeover to old stuff, restore its value, reduce waste and have lots of fun. I want to normalize upcycling, especially in a world where “ring out the old, ring in the new” is so common with fast fashion trends, fast food, and our boredom with most material things.
With respect to art and upcycling, I soon start working on jeans to give them a new look. Most of us throw away our old jeans just because they’re behind the times. But they can be something that is all the rage. I’m aiming to take those pitiful pairs of pants and turn them into something worth keeping and in style. Such practices are always beneficial as they help with sustainable development. After all, we have limited resources and must use them wisely.
4. What gave the author the idea of upcycling old things?
A. Her design talent. B. A cheer from her brother.
C. A painting experience. D. Her concern over the environment.
5. What does the author think most important in the upcycling process?
A. Improving her skill. B. Tailoring every object.
C. Keeping original value. D. Avoiding material waste.
6. Why does the author mention “ring out the old ring in the new”?
A. To stress the value of old things. B. To criticize the craze for new trends.
C. To show difficulties with her work. D. To explain the necessity of upcycling.
7. What does the underlined phrase “all the rage” mean in the last paragraph?
A. On-trend. B. Wear-resistant. C. Eco-friendly. D. Good-looking.

The health benefits of being in nature have long been known, whether through activities like listening to birdsong or taking a walk in the park. A study published in 2024 shows that even half an hour of bird watching could make us happier, healthier and help develop a deeper connection with nature. The study suggests that not only can bird-watching offer even more benefits than just listening to birdsong, it’s more effective at increasing well-being and reducing stress than going on a nature walk.
So why is bird-watching so good for us? Biophilia could be a big part of it. Biophilia is the belief that humans have an affection for nature, so being in natural surroundings makes us feel well. Meanwhile, biodiversity is a natural medicine for humans that can help reduce stress and encourage physical activity.
Bird-watching can be awesome (令人敬畏的) as well as joyful. “Noticing” nature is an essential aspect of awe. Noticing means that people’s full attention is on the birds rather than themselves. When watching birds, people become fully concentrated on identifying bird species, understanding their behaviors and observing their actions. This state occurs naturally, fueled by great curiosity, high concentration and continuous engagement. By doing so, birdwatchers can immerse (沉浸) themselves in nature, which can improve mental and physical health.
So, step into nature for a bird-watching session and a well-being boost (提升). Start the journey and enjoy every moment.
8. What does the study mentioned in Paragraph 1 suggest?
A. Birdsong is hardly heard in parks. B. Bird-watching offers great benefits.
C. Benefits of being in nature are known. D. People prefer walking to watching birds.
9. What makes bird-watching awesome according to the passage?
A. Understanding of life. B. Concern about humans.
C Improvement of health. D. Respect for nature itself.
10. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce a bird species. B. To recommend people a park.
C. To call on people to watch birds. D. To inform people of birds’ situation.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear?
A. Health. B. Fashion. C. History. D. Food.
D
For thousands of years, people have changed food to please their sense of taste. More than 3, 000years ago Mesoamericans, living in what is Mexico and Central America today, cooked com kernels (玉米粒) in a solution of wood ash or limestone. The process unlocked nutrients and softened the tough outer shells of the corn, making it easier to chew.
With the invention of canned goods in the 19th century, the industrial-scale transformation of food became possible. According to the UN, the average daily food supply available for a person in the rich world increased by over 20% between 1961 and 2021, to 3, 500 kilocalories. In that time, obesity rates have more than tripled; today, nearly one in three people globally is obese or overweight.
Now worries are mounting that the heavy processing used to cook up cheap, tasty snacks may itself be harmful. A parțicular target is “ultra-processed foods” (UPFs), heavily processed foods like ice-cream or instant noodles. At the heart of the debate is a question: are UPFs unhealthy because their nutritional content is poor, or does the processing somehow pose risks in itself? At the turn of the 21st century some scientists noticed that people in Brazil were buying less sugar and oil than in the past. Yet rates of obesity were still rising. This unintentionally occurred with the growing popularity of packaged desserts and ready-made meals.
By now numerous studies have shown that people who consume diets high in UPFs tend to have more health problems. But a recent analysis by Samuel Dicken and Rachel Batterham at University College London reviewed 37 studies and found that even after adjusting for fat, sugar and salt UPFs were still strongly linked to poor health. That suggests there is more to their harm than just a poor nutrient profile.
Where those harms come from is still unclear, however. With so many influential causes that could also explain poor health — such as income and education — observational studies alone cannot offer conclusive answers. Arne Astrup, a Danish researcher, argues that evidently most of the studies that make statistical adjustments to try to isolate (分离) the effects of processing are “not good enough”.
12. Why did Mesoamericans process corn kernels?
A. To ensure better consumption. B. To enable easy handling.
C. To discover new solutions. D. To facilitate safe storage.
13. What do the data in paragraph 2 show?
A. The history of food industry. B. The benefits of preserved food.
C. The results of food mass production. D. The development of food processing.
14. What can be inferred about ultra-processed foods?
A. Their popularity is in decline. B. Their presence changes Brazilians’ diet.
C. Their nutrients can make up for their risks. D. Their processing methods arouse concerns.
15. Why do observational studies fail to determine the effects of UPFs?
A. Many factors affect the results. B. The related statistics are inaccurate.
C. The studies lack enough evidence. D. The causes of harm remain unknown.

It was a sunny Saturday morning. Tom, a passionate hiker, set out on a trail in the mountains. The path was narrow but well-marked, winding through thick forests and across bubbling brooks (小溪). As he walked deeper into the mountains, he noticed the sky gradually becoming cloudy.
Suddenly a strong gust of wind blew through the trees, making them sway violently. Tom realized a storm was approaching. He quickened his pace, looking for shelter. Just then, he saw a small, abandoned cabin (小木屋) by the side of the trail. Its roof was partially damaged, but it was better than nothing. Tom rushed inside and started to look around. It was dirty and filled with spider webs, but in a corner, he found an old flashlight. He hoped it still worked.
As the storm hit, the rain poured down in sheets and thunder roared. Lightning flashed, lighting up the dark interior of the cabin. Tom sat on the floor, waiting for the storm to pass. After what seemed like hours, the rain finally began to ease. Tom decided to head back home before it got dark.
He stepped out of the cabin and started walking back along the trail. But the storm had caused several landslides, blocking parts of the path. Tom had to carefully climb over rocks and fallen trees. As he was making his way, he heard a faint cry for help. It seemed to be coming from a nearby ravine (沟壑).
Tom stopped and listened carefully. The cry came again, more desperate this time. He knew he had to find out where it was coming from. He tied a rope he had brought to a solid tree near the edge of the ravine and slowly started to go down to a lower level, using the flashlight to guide his way.

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. A

【16题详解】
前文“Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was (《健身》杂志最近刊登了一篇题为《感谢你的健身伙伴的五个理由》的文章。一个原因是)”引出健身时有伙伴有好处的话题,空处应给出一个感谢健身伙伴的理由,因此D项“You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym. (如果你知道有人在健身房等你,你就会出现)”符合语境,指出健身伙伴的存在让人更容易去健身,承接前文。故选D。
【17题详解】
前文“First of all, decide what you want from that person. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport? (首先,决定你想从那个人身上得到什么。你想在你最喜欢的运动中成为更好的运动员吗)”建议考虑想从健身伙伴所求的东西,以问题的形式列举健身的目标,后文“Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner. (想想你想和你的健身伙伴一起做的运动)”建议考虑两人一起做的运动,因此E项“Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? (或者你只是想要身体健康,能够有力量且灵活地移动吗)”符合语境,同样是一个问句,描述想通过健身获得身体健康的目标,和前文的问句构成选择关系,引出后文进一步的建议。故选E。
【18题详解】

(你可能会考虑在社交媒体上发布你想要的东西,但这可能不会得到有用的回应。健身伙伴通常需要住在附近)”指出寻找健身伙伴需要考虑位置便利这个因素,因此G项“If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym. (如果你计划在健身房锻炼,那个人必须属于同一个健身房)”符合语境,指出健身房锻炼的伙伴需属于同一个健身房,进一步强调位置便利这个因素,承接前文。故选G。

(发给训练伙伴的任何布告都应包括这些信息)”总结要包含以上信息,空处应列出这个伙伴给出的其他信息,因此F项“It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. (上面还列出了她最喜欢的运动和活动,并提供了她的电话号码)”符合语境,选项中“also”提示进一步说明包含的信息,承接前文。故选F。
【20题详解】
空处位于段首,需引出段落内容。后文“Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. Over time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. (接受你们之间的差异,学会合作。随着时间的推移,你们俩都会受益——你的伴侣将能够举起更多的重量,你也会变得更健康)”主要建议接受差异,从合作中取得进步,因此B项“You and your partner will probably have different skills. 五、书面表达
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew through the trees, making them sway violently.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As he reached the bottom of the ravine, he saw a young girl hide under a rock.

Then, Tom picked up the girl and started to climb back up the ravine.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As he reached the bottom of the ravine, he saw a young girl hide under a rock. She was wet and shivering, her clothes torn. Tom quickly approached her and asked if she was okay. The girl looked up at him with frightened eyes and said that she had slipped and fallen while trying to find shelter during the storm. She had twisted her ankle and couldn’t walk. Tom comforted her, telling her not to worry. He examined her ankle and found that it was swollen but not broken. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around the girl to keep her warm.
Then, Tom picked up the girl and started to climb back up the ravine. The rope helped them, but it was still a tough task. The wet and slippery rocks made it a challenge. But he kept going. Finally, they reached the top of the ravine and got to the entrance of the mountain. Tom saw a car there and waved for help. The driver rushed over and took the girl to get medical attention. The girl thanked Tom before she left, and Tom felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. He knew this was an adventure he would never forget.
