“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase the business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression serves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
4.How does the author understand Maxie’s words?
A.Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.
B.Maxie really wishes the author a good day.
C.Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.
D.Maxie really worries about the author’s security.
5.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The salesgirl is polite. B.The salesgirl says the words as a routine.
C.The salesgirl cares about me. D.The salesgirl is bored.
6.By saying “Have a nice day,” a stranger may ________.
A.try to be friendly to you B.express respect to you
C.give his blessing to you D.share his pleasure with you
7.Which the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A.“Have a nice day” is a social custom.
B.“Have a nice day” means a polite ending of a conversation.
C.“Have a nice day” is a heart-warming greeting.
D.“Have a nice day” is a pleasant gesture.
C
“Colour” and “color” , “favourite” and “favorite” , “honour” and “honor” …Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a “u”? Is it because they are lazy? Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster (1758-1843). He was a teacher who reformed (改革) English to make American identity (特征) stronger. Linguists (语言学家) celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year.
After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. Some other examples are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”.
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining (定义) preposterous (unreasonable), he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.”
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.
“He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Why does a language become used internationally, or even — as in the case of English — globally (全球地)? 16 They say that English has become a world language because it’s more beautiful than other languages, or because it has a simpler grammar or vocabulary.
The reason is none of these things. Beauty is impossible to explain exactly. And, as any English learner knows, English has quite a difficult grammar and a very large vocabulary! There are also other parts of English which make it more difficult to learn than some other languages. 17
A language becomes a world language for one reason only: the power (力量) of the people who speak it. But power can be of many different kinds. 18
English started its international growth during the Middle Ages. 19 Soon after, it crossed the Atlantic, and then the Indian Ocean and beyond. Here we’re talking about political (政治的) and military (军事的) power. When the British Empire became a global reality, English was described as ‘a language on which the sun never sets’.
Today, English is still a world language, though the British Empire is a thing of the past. 20 During the Industrial Revolution, we saw the power of knowledge: English became the main language of science and technology. During the 19th century, we saw it was connected with economic (经济的) power. And during the 20th century, we saw it became the language of cultural power, used in everything from transport to the Internet.
A.English has a large number of speakers.
B.Some say that English will become less important.
C.Yet this hasn’t stopped its rise as a global language.
D.Three other kinds of power make English still a world language.
E.Many people think it has something to do with the language itself.
F.It moved from England up into Scotland and across the sea into Ireland.
G.It’s important to see which kinds of power led to the growth of English over the centuries.

第二节(满分25分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For more than 20 years I have been traveling the world, preferring often to spend a year or two in different countries rather than to just visit as a tourist. It has become an important part of my personality as I grew older and shaped the way I saw the world and myself.
My little taste of this amazing life was when I was 19 years old. I was selected among a small group of college classmates to spend a year abroad. This was long before people could travel the world through social media like Facebook and Twitter. In order to see a place, you had to go there and experienced it.
I was raised in a middle-class family and couldn’t afford to travel around the world the way I wished I could. The only way I knew about the world outside was through letters I wrote to pen pals from over a dozen countries as a kid, and from television. Growing up, I always loved the very funny British comedies that were shown on local public television every Saturday night. So when I got the chance to apply for a study abroad program, I chose London.
Living abroad can be exciting, scary and challenging. I thought it would be easier because I spoke the same language as the local people did. But I also like to relish (享受) the little differences between the British and American culture and language. I also learned that in England, they spell words differently than in the U. S. In British spelling, they put a “u” in words like favor to make it “favour” and an “s” in words like analyze to make it “analyse”. I was able to adapt quickly to this new way of writing since I was submitting papers all the time for my classes.
Academically, I got to take classes that weren’t offered at my college back home. For example, I had a course in sociology and learned about the native people of Papua New Guinea.

Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed.(语言交流项目让学生们两人一组,每周用他们希望分享和学习的两种不同的语言进行交流。学生们在每次搭档会议后记录简短的条目,指出所练习的语言技能和讨论的主题)”可知,在这个项目中,学生们将练习他们的语言技能。故选D。

3.细节理解题。根据Sign up部分第一点“Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.(学生们报名参加并表明他们可以分享的语言以及他们有兴趣学习的语言)”可知,学生们在注册期间需要表明他们感兴趣的语言。故选A。
B
【答案】4.B 5.B 6.A 7.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了人们之间相互问候的用语“Have a nice day”的特点和不同场合下的一些意义。
4. 细节理解题。由文章第一段中“I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me.”(我知道她真心关心我的情况。)可知,Maxie是真心祝福作者一天开心。故选B。
5.词句猜测题。根据第二段的“The words came out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure.”(词语发音都是以相同的声调和固定的程序。)可知女售货员这么说只是固定程序,没有特定含义,由此可知,画线句子指的是女售货员例行公事地说着这句话。故选B。
6. 推理判断题。根据第四段的“you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.”( 你可能会觉得这很温暖,因为你不认识的人试图对你好。)”可知陌生人向你这样说,是想向你表示友好,故选A。
7.主旨大意题。通览全文及结合文章最后一段的第一句中“Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times”(虽然这个表达的使用有时是一种不真诚、毫无意义的社会习俗),可知文章主要讲述了简单的一句“Have a nice day”已经成为一种交际习惯。故选A。

C.Noah Webster added local words to the dictionary.
D.Noah Webster wrote an American English dictionary and reformed English.
【答案】8.A 9.C 10.B 11.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美式英语实际上是由诺亚·韦伯斯特开启的,他编写了一本美式英语词典,改变了一些英式英语的拼写和表达,让当时的美国人拥有了自己的词典,加强了美国人对于自己文化和身份的认同感,促进了美国的团结统一。
8.词句猜测题。根据划线词的上文“After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary (独立战争(1775-1783)后,韦伯斯特认为美国人应该有自己的词典)”和下文“He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. (他在一些单词中省略了英式的u。他把centre改成了center,让孩子们通过拼写更接近发音的单词来学习英语。他用subway代替了英国的underground)”可知,韦伯斯特编写该词典是在美国独立战争后,是为了让美国人拥有自己的词典,词典中的一些单词与英式英语不同。由此推知,他希望美国人在词典这方面能够独立,不依赖英式词典,划线词意思应该是“依赖”。故选A项。
9.细节理解题。根据第二段中“He dropped the British “u” in some words. (他在一些单词中省略了英式的u。)”以及第四段“Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words. (韦伯斯特花了28年的时间才在1828年完成了这部7万词的美式拼写词典。他还加入了当地的词汇)”可知,韦伯斯特词典中包含当地词汇,有7万词,且单词是美式拼写,把一些英式英语中的字母u省掉;C项“所有单词的拼写都没有u”不符合文意。故选C项。
10.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom. (语言学家认为,在大多数人关心政治自由的时候,它帮助一个新国家实现了统一和文化独立)”和最后一段““He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”

“We overproduce in fashion; there are always extra products no matter what company you go to,” said Munz. “Clothes are lying around their showrooms and nobody knows what to do with them.”
Munz wanted to find a good use for the designers’ clothes and sell them at a lower price to anyone who wants to buy them.
She turned her dream into a reality when she received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Baruch College, where she learned the basics of starting a non-profit organization. In 2014, she created The Fashion Foundation. She started small collecting clothes from her friends and family for her online shop.
Her first big partner was a designer who she found through a networking event. The designer offered Munz some unwanted products for free. From there it continued to grow and now Munz has over 140 designers helping with her business.
Munz knew that with the money collected from her sales, she wanted to give back, so she did some research and found that some kids in New York needed school supplies (用品).
“It’s so basic, but a lot of schools don’t have it,” said Munz. “It was at the moment that I realized I could do something for them.”
Munz is excited to continue her dream working with different designers towards a great cause that can help students get school supplies while at the same time, having people buy a piece of clothing they might have not been able to afford.

【答案】16.E 17.C 18.G 19.F 20.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主语介绍了英语成为国际通用语的原因。
16.上文“Why does a language become used internationally, or even — as in the case of English — globally (全球地)? (为什么一种语言会在国际上使用,甚至像英语一样在全球范围内使用?)”以及下文“They say that English has become a world language because it’s more beautiful than other languages, or because it has a simpler grammar or vocabulary. (他们说英语之所以成为世界语言,是因为它比其他语言更美丽,或者因为它的语法或词汇更简单)”说明,本空在回答上文的问题,解释有的语言如英语成为国际通用语的原因,空后They指代E项中的Many people。因此E项“许多人认为这与语言本身有关”符合语境,故选E。
17.文章第一段提到许多人觉得英语之所以会成为国际通用语是因为它容易掌握。上文“There are also other parts of English which make it more difficult to learn than some other languages. (英语的其他部分也比其他一些语言更难学习)”解释说明实际上英语是一门很难学的语言,由此可知,尽管英语难学,但它还是在全球范围内得到了广泛应用,C项“然而,这并没有阻止它作为一种全球语言的崛起”是对上文内容的转折,this指代上文内容,故C项符合语境。故选C。
18.上文“But power can be of many different kinds. (但力量可以有很多种)”解释了导致语言兴起的真正原因,下文几段具体解释了导致英语兴起的几种力量。由此可推断,空格处与“导致英语兴起的力量”相关,且能起到引出下文的作用,因此G项“重要的是要看看是什么样的力量导致了几个世纪以来英语的发展”承上启下,符合语境,故选G。
19.上文“English started its international growth during the Middle Ages. (英语在中世纪开始了国际发展)”以及下文“Soon after, it crossed the Atlantic, and then the Indian Ocean and beyond. Here we’re talking about political (政治的) and military (军事的) power. (不久之后,它穿越了大西洋,然后是印度洋和更远的地方。在这里,我们谈论的是政治和军事力量。)”可知,此处应描述英语是如何兴起的,F项中的It 指代上文中的English,且F项与空格后的Soon after, it crossed the Atlantic, and then the Indian Ocean and beyond一起描述英语的扩张之路。因此F项“它从英格兰向上进入苏格兰,穿过大海进入爱尔兰”符合语境,故选F。
20.上文“Today, English is still a world language, though the British Empire is a thing of the past. (天,英语仍然是一种世界语言,尽管大英帝国已经成为过去)”以及下文“During the Industrial Revolution, we saw the power of knowledge: English became the main language of science and technology. During the 19th century, we saw it was connected with economic (经济的) power. And during the 20th century, we saw it became the language of cultural power, used in everything from transport to the Internet.( 在工业革命期间,我们看到了知识的力量:英语成为科学技术的主要语言。在19世纪,我们看到它与经济实力有关。在20世纪,我们看到它成为了文化力量的语言,用于从交通到互联网的所有领域)”具体描述了三种力量使得英语依然是国际通用语,空格处为本段的主旨句,因此D项“另外三种力量使英语仍然是世界语言”中的Three other kinds of power, 即下文中的power of knowledge、economic power、cultural power,故选D。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: But there were also challenges that year too.

Paragraph 2: Sometimes the difficult times made me sad and homesick.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】But there were also challenges that year too. One of my classes was called “Europe Since 1870”. In the U.S., I would have expected an introductory history class, but in England, I was supposed to have already known the history. Now was the time to analyze it. That meant I not only had to learn the history as I went along but also had to try to write a paper explaining why certain events happened as they did. Despite this, I don’t regret anything about my time in London. Even through painful experiences, I learn to grow.
Sometimes the difficult times made me sad and homesick. But luckily, I met some classmates from all over the world, and these wonderful interactions with people watered down my negative feelings. I met dozens of interesting people from places like France, Greece and Germany, Palestine, and Australia. Learning how to make friends with people from different cultures and backgrounds is really fun. Moreover, interacting with these new friends helps me understand the countries they represent.

②由第二段首句内容“有时困难时期使我悲伤和想家。”可知,第二段可描写作者是如何从悲伤和想家中走出来的。
2.续写线索:课程挑战——感受如何——困难时期悲伤——化解悲伤的方式——作者的感悟
