1. Greetings
T: Good morning, class! How are you all today?
Ss: Good morning, teacher! Fine, thank you. And you?
T: I'm great too. Are you ready for an interesting English class?
Ss: Yes!
2. Lead - in
T: Okay, class. First, let's look at the pictures on pages 2 and 3 of your books. (Show the pictures on the big screen) Now, tell me, how do you think these people feel? Take a moment to observe their expressions.
S1: Maybe they are very happy, because they all wear happy smiles on their faces.
T: Exactly! Their smiles are a big giveaway. Happiness is such a wonderful feeling. Can you think of some things that make you feel happy? Raise your hands and share with the class.
S2: Playing games with my friends makes me happy.
S3: Eating my favorite ice - cream makes me feel really happy.
S4: Getting good grades in exams makes me happy.
T: Great! There are so many things that can bring us happiness. Now, let's move on to our new lesson. We are going to explore more about the secrets of happiness.
3. Starting out
T: Now, class, look at the poem on your books. Let's read it aloud together. Pay attention to the rhythm and intonation. (Read the poem aloud with the students)
Holidays and having fun
Afternoons in the park
Playing games with friends
Parties and birthday presents
Your happy smile
T: Well done! Now, let's think about two questions. First, what is the poem about?
S5: It's about happiness. The words like “holidays”, “fun”, “friends” and “happy smile” all show happiness.
T: Correct! And the second question, what's special about this poem? Look carefully at the first letter of each sentence.
S6: The first letters of each sentence spell out “HAPPY”.
T: Excellent! This is called an acrostic poem. It's a very interesting way to show the theme of happiness. So, as we can see from this poem, happiness is everywhere! We can find it from our daily life, from small things around us. Now, what stories do you know about happiness? And what can you learn from them? Maybe we can find some answers from the passage we'll learn today.
4. Understanding ideas
4.1 Pre - reading—prediction
T: Class, look at the picture on page 4 of your books. What can you see in the picture?
S7: I can see a family sitting around a table. There are some simple foods on the table.
T: Good observation. Do you think everyone is happy? Why or why not? Discuss with your partner for a minute. (Give students time to discuss)
S8: I think they are happy. Although they don't have much food, they are together and seem to enjoy each other's company.
S9: I'm not sure. Maybe they are a little sad because they are poor and don't have enough to eat.
T: These are all great thoughts. Now, what do you think makes them happy? Share your ideas with the class.
S10: Their love for each other might make them happy.
S11: Spending time together as a family can also bring happiness.
T: Very good. These predictions are really helpful. Now, let's see if our predictions are right when we read the passage.
4.2 Global reading
T: Most of us like stories, right? Have you read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?
Ss: Some say yes, some say no.
T: Okay, class, today we'll read a book review about this story. First, let me explain the word “REVIEW” to you. In Chinese, it means “书评”. A review usually includes comments on the book, contents about the book and the theme of it. Now, open your books and read the whole passage quickly. After that, choose the best title from the options in Activity 3 on page 6. Start reading! (Give students time to read)
T: Time's up. Which title do you think is the best?
S12: I think (b) “The key to happiness” is the best title, because the passage seems to talk about what makes the family in the story happy.
T: That's a great choice. The passage indeed explores the key to happiness through the story. So, from this global reading, we know that the story is about a family's life and their happiness.
4.3 Close reading
T: Now, let's go through the passage more carefully. First, match the main idea with each part of the passage. (Give students time to do this)
T: Let's check the answers together. For the first part, what do you think the main idea is?
S13: It's about introducing the story.
T: Correct. And the second part?
S14: It's about the happy family in the story.
T: Right. Now, let's continue with Activity 4 on page 6. Read the passage carefully and fill in the blanks. (Students do the activity)
T: Time to check. For the first blank, what should we fill in?
S15: story.
T: Good. And the second one?
S16: happy family.
T: Perfect. Let's keep going. (Check all the answers one by one)
Possible keys: 1. story 2. happy family 3. small 4. the floor 5. enough food 6. listened to 7. a happy place 8. their hungry and poor life 9. Love 10. happiness
T: Through this close reading, we can see that although the family in the story was poor, they found happiness in simple things like being together and loving each other.
4.4 Deep reading & discussion
T: Now, let's think about a question in “Think and share”. Do you agree that “happiness comes from things like money”? But before we start discussing, remember, to better understand others' views, you can relate them to your own experience, then give your own opinion on the topic. Discuss in your groups for 5 minutes. (Students discuss in groups)
T: Time's up. Which group wants to share your ideas first?
Group 1: We don't totally agree. In the story, the family was poor but happy. In our lives, we also have many happy moments that don't need money. For example, when we help others and see their smiles, we feel happy.
T: That's a great point. Helping others can bring us a lot of happiness without spending money. Any other groups?
Group 2: We think money can bring some happiness. With money, we can buy things we like, go on trips. But it's not the only thing that makes us happy.
T: Right. Money can meet some of our material needs and bring temporary happiness, but true happiness is more than that.
5. Language points
5.1 exciting 的用法
T: Now, let's learn some important language points. First, look at the word “exciting”. “Exciting” is an adjective, and it means “令人兴奋的;使人激动的;刺激的”. When we use it with an indefinite article, we use “an” because it starts with a vowel sound. For example, “It's an exciting movie.” Now, let's compare “exciting” with “excited”. (Write on the board)
“exciting” is used to describe something (a thing) that has a certain characteristic. It often tells us about the nature of the thing. For example, “The game is exciting.” Here, we are talking about the game itself, which has the quality of being exciting. And it can be used as a predicate or an attributive. When it is used as a predicate, the subject is usually a thing.
“excited” is used to describe a person's mental state. It shows how a person feels inside. We often use the phrase “be/get excited about…”, which means “对…… 感到兴奋”. For example, “I am excited about the trip.” Here, “I” is the person who has this feeling. And “excited” is often used as a predicate, and the subject is usually a person.
Let's make some sentences to practice. I'll give you some topics, and you make sentences with “exciting” or “excited”. Topic 1: The football match.
S17: The football match is so exciting. Many people are excited about it.
T: Very good! Topic 2: The news of winning the prize.
S18: The news of winning the prize is exciting. We are all excited when we hear it.
T: Perfect!
5.2 forget 的用法
T: Next, let's talk about the word “forget”. “Forget” has two important usages. “Forget to do sth” means you forget that you need to do something. It means the thing hasn't been done yet. For example, “I forget to bring my homework.” Here, I was supposed to bring my homework, but I didn't remember to do it.
“Forget doing sth” means you forget that you have already done something. For example, “I forget closing the door.” It means I closed the door, but I don't remember that I did it.
Let's practice. I'll give you some situations, and you use “forget to do sth” or “forget doing sth” to make sentences. Situation 1: You were supposed to feed the dog this morning, but you didn't.
S19: I forget to feed the dog this morning.
T: Right. Situation 2: You cleaned your room, but later you don't remember that you did it.
S20: I forget cleaning my room.
T: Great job!
6. Summary
T: Class, let's summarize what we have learned today. First, we read a passage about the secrets of happiness. We learned that happiness doesn't always come from money. Family love, simple joys in life can also bring us great happiness.
We also learned some new words and their usages, like “exciting” and “forget”. Remember the differences between “exciting” and “excited”, and the two usages of “forget”.
For homework, I want you to write a short passage about a happy moment in your life. Try to use the words and grammar we learned today.
T: That's all for today's class. Class is over. Goodbye, class!
Ss: Goodbye, teacher!
