In May 2023, on the eve of her summit attempt on Mount Qomolangma, Xu Zhuoyuan met a fierce snowstorm during her climbing. Howling winds and heavy snowfall relentlessly battered her team, and her oxygen mask kept freezing. Despite this, Xu reached the summit at 5:46 am the following day, making her the youngest Chinese woman to conquer the world’s highest peak from the southern slope.
“Standing on the same ridge (山脊) my father climbed 16 years ago from the northern slope felt like a meeting across time and space,” Xu, now 18 and in her third year of high school. In 2007, when Xu was just 1 year old, her father became the first person from Central Chin’s Hunan province to summit Mount Qomolangma. Growing up in a mountaineering environment, Xu’s life was naturally shaped by a passion for the mountains.
Over the years, Xu has climbed several challenging peaks across China, including Mount Siguniang and Banji Peak in Sichuan, and Muztagh Ata in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, which prepared her for the great challenge — Mount Qomolangma. After summiting Mount Qomolangma, Xu didn’t stop. In 2024, she climbed Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, and Elbrus, Europe’s highest. These expeditions are part of her ambitious “7+2” plan — referring to the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, along with the North and South Poles.
Xu shared that in extreme sports like mountaineering, many stereotypes about women still exist. “Some believe women are too fragile to handle the tough.” she said. However, she pointed out that many women are active climbers. “We are proving through our actions that these biases (偏见) are wrong,” Xu said. She admitted that, due to physiological differences, women may face certain challenges in high-altitude climbing, “But our mental resilience (韧性) stands out. We stay calmer, more patient, and more detail-oriented in crises.” she explained. “In extreme sports, women can achieve as much as men— and sometimes even excel.”
4. How old was Xu when she reached the world’s highest peak from the southern slope?
A. 15. B. 17. C. 18. D. 20.
5. What does the ‘7+2’ plan refer to?
A. To climb 7 peaks and ski at both Poles.
B. To break 7 records and run two marathons.
C. To summit Qomolangma 7 times and explore two Poles.
D. To conquer the highest peaks on 7 continents and reach both Poles.
6. What does the underlined word “stereotypes” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Natural phenomena. B. Climbing techniques.
C. Scientific theories. D. Fixed beliefs or thoughts.
7. What does Xu stress as a key strength of women in extreme sports?
A. Mental resilience. B. Endless patience.
C. Technical skills. D. Competitive spirit.

We know sleep quality is important for good health, that adolescence (青少年时期) is an important time for brain development, and that teens don’t always get a huge amount of sleep — and new research gives us some fresh understanding of how that all fits together.
Researchers used data from 3,222 adolescents aged 9 to 14. They divided them into three groups based on sleep habits: the worst (averaging 7 hours and 10 minutes per night), the best (7 hours and 25 minutes), and those in between (7 hours and 21 minutes). While there wasn’t much difference between these groups in terms of academic achievement, the best sleepers showed noticeable improvements in cognitive (认知的) tests for reading, problem solving, and focus, compared to the worst sleepers. “Even though the differences in the amount of sleep that each group got were relatively small, at just over a quarter-of-an-hour between the best and worst sleepers, we could still see differences in brain structure and activity and in how well they did at tasks,” says clinical neuropsychologist Barbara Sahakian from the University of Cambridge. “This shows us just how important it is to have a good night’s sleep at this important stage in life.”
The group of young people who slept the longest per night was also observed to have the largest brain volumes, the lowest heart rates, and the highest levels of brain connectivity, compared to the other groups. Worryingly, 39% of the young people had the poorest sleep data, 24% were in the middle group, and 37% had the best sleep scores.
The research can’t prove cause and effect between sleep and brain function, but together with other studies, it shows that young brains need sleep protection. Psychologist Qing Ma said there are studies supporting the idea that better sleep may lead to better brain function and test performance. This study reminds teens and parents to reduce time on mobile devices. Regular good sleep helps us function properly, yet we know little about adolescent sleep despite its importance.
8. What does the research aim to do?
A. Measure heart rate differences in teenagers.
B. Analyze the effects of sleep habits on good health.
C. Investigate sleep-brain relationships in adolescents.
D. Compare academic achievements among adolescents.
9. What can be inferred about the “best sleepers” from Paragraph 2?
A. They had the lowest heart rates. B. They performed better in cognition.
C. They had better academic performance. D. They spent significantly more time sleeping.
10. Why are the percentages listed in Paragraph 3?
A. To compare sleep habits. B. To draw attention to the sleep problem.
C. To explain the study’s sample size. D. To challenge previous research findings.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Longer sleep betters academic achievement.
B. Sleep habits are well-understood in current research.
C. Protecting sleep during adolescence may require practical changes.
D. Reducing screen time is likely unnecessary to improve sleep quality.

Chinese artificial intelligence firm Manus AI launched a new AI agent, Manus, on Thursday, and it quickly became popular on social media, with many referring to it as “the second disruptor after DeepSeek” and calling it “the GPT moment” for AI agents.
AI agents are autonomous intelligent systems performing specific tasks without human intervention. Manus said that based on the GAIA Benchmark, a standard for general AI assistants, its tool has achieved state-of-the-art performance across all three difficulty levels, ahead of Open AI’s models. “This isn’t just another chatbot or workflow tool,” said Ji Yichao, co-founder and chief scientist at Manus AI. “It’s a truly autonomous agent that bridges the gap between instruction and execution (执行).”
“Where other AI stop at generating ideas, Manus delivers results, ” he said, adding that the team has been quietly building what it believes is the next evolution in AI. As of Thursday, the so-called Manus invitation codes were being resold for nearly 100,000 yuan ($13,797) on the second-hand trading platform Xianyu.
According to database firm Tianyancha, Manus’ founder, Xiao Hong, established the company in 2015but exited(退出) as a shareholder in December 2024. Following his leave, shareholders including Tencent’s venture capital company increased their investment (投资) . Besides, Monica. im, the operator Manus, and a related company linked to technology firm Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Co Ltd secured a seeding round of investment from ZhenFund in July 2022.
Industry experts believed that the significance of the Manus ecosystem strategy lies in introducing a new business model to the industry — building a general AI agent ecosystem. This could emerge as the second-largest AI application scenario after AI-powered search.
Technology sector consultancy and research firm Gartner reported in January 2024 that 21 percent of companies had already put AI agents into their production workflows. By 2026, this figure is projected to be over 80 percent.
12. What do people think of Manus AI’s new agent?
A. It requires constant human control. B. It has achieved human-like intelligence.
C. It mainly focuses on household tasks. D. It represents a breakthrough like GPT.
13. What’s Manus’ main feature?
A. A chatbot generating ideas. B. An autonomous task-executor.
C. A workflow efficiency tool. D. A system with human intervention.
14. How does the author describe the development of Manus AI in the article?
A. By comparing its performance with Open AI’s models.
B. By using benchmark data and industry adoption trends.
C. By stressing its founder’s background and company history.
D. By focusing only on its widespread popularity on social media.
15. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. The Progress of AI Tech B. Changes in AI Investment
C. Manus: An Advanced workflow tool D. Manus: A Rising Challenger

A Special Anniversary
Our home in New Jersey was close to a lottery retailer (彩票销售点), but my husband Frank and I had never been there together. We lived carefully with our money — carrying lunches to work, skipping vocations, and staying at home most nights. But for our fifteenth wedding anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves, we decided to eat out first and then try our luck at the lottery retailer.
We chose a nice restaurant near the lottery retailer and arrived early to enjoy a slow, relaxing dinner. We ordered soup, main dishes, and even a glass of wine each. Halfway through our delicious dinner, Frank and I noticed that the two diners at the table to our right seemed to be looking for something under their table and all around. The elegantly dressed woman appeared to be in her late seventies, and her much younger male companion looked like he might be her son. The woman kept touching her ear.
“Did you lose an earring?” I asked. The woman shook her head. “My hearing aid,” she said. “My son finally talked me into getting it this week, and it’s so expensive,” she continued. “My son’s eyes are better than mine, but he can’t find it either.”
No waiters seemed to be helping. Frank stood up immediately. “Let me look,” he offered. “Maybe a fresh eye will spot it.” “Oh, it’s very small, and it’s the same color as the floor,” the woman said, adding, “I don’t want to bother you.” “That’s okay, let me try.” Frank said, and bent down, moving a few inches at a time, eyes and hands sweeping back and forth.
The woman sat down slowly. Her son was carefully searching the floor back and forth away from the table and back. Meanwhile, I also bent down to help together. “Thank you so much,” the woman said. “But I’m afraid it’s lost forever. Your dinner’s getting cold...”

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
After a while, her son also gave up, but Frank kept searching.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. C

【答案】
After a while, her son also gave up, but Frank kept searching. He was on his hands and knees, crawling slowly across the floor. Suddenly, Frank let out a little cry. “I found it!” he said, holding up the tiny hearing aid. The woman’s face lit up with relief and joy. She took the hearing aid from Frank’s hand, tears welling up in her eyes. Her son also thanked us profusely, and they insisted on paying for our dinner as a token of their gratitude, but we politely declined.
Having accepted their best wishes, we happily went to the lottery retailer. We each picked a lottery ticket. When the numbers were announced, we were shocked to find that we had won a significant amount of money. On our way home, we decided that a part of the money would be donated to charities that helped the elderly. After all, helping others was the real treasure, and this anniversary would always be remembered as a time when kindness was rewarded.
