B Standing on the shore of a lake, I can’t help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time. And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks? Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago. And much like a rock, I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun. Once I too was a sharp rock covered in point y edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and I’ve become more understanding. I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together. But I’m not a rock. I’m a human being filled with all the drama built into my DNA. Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can to get through this together.” The group of young men wished to argue about the note. I sat watching, understanding both sides. I’ve been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more open, I’ve also found more happiness and success. You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to adapt to others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view. I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again. 4. What does the author compare the rocks to? A. People’s abilities. B. People’s personalities. C. What nature offers us. D. Challenges we come across. 5. Why does the author mention the incident at the restaurant in the Pacific Northwest? A. To criticize the restaurant owner for being too strict. B. To highlight the importance of following rules without question. C. To argue against the effectiveness of official mask rules. D. To show how he once behaved like the young men who argued. 6. What does the underlined phrase “chip away at” probably mean? A. Adapt to. B. Do harm to. C. Fight against. D. Get on well with. 7. What lesson does the author draw from observing the rounded rocks by the lake? A. Rounded rocks are better teachers than people. B. Happiness and peace come from avoiding challenges. C. Strength builds up by maintaining sharp and pointed edges. D. Time and experiences soften resistance and encourage understanding. B 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第四段“Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and I’ve become more understanding. I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.(曾经我也是一块边缘尖锐的石头。 根据第八段“I sat watching, understanding both sides. I’ve been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others.(我坐在那里看着,理解双方。 根据第四段“Once I too was a sharp rock covered in point y edges.(我曾经也是一块尖利岩石,上面布满了棱角。)”以及划线词句下文“What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others.(然而,我失去的是通过别人的眼睛从经历中成长的能力。)” 根据倒数第二段“Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view.(时间,就像冲刷着曾经尖锐的石头的水一样,通过冲走我们对从他人角度看世界的抵触情绪来改变我们。)” D。 C It is commonly believed that we should adopt a positive attitude towards life. But too much of a good thing can potentially be harmful. So how does one practice proper positivity in order to have a healthy mindset? According to the journal New Scientist, being positive to an extreme extent can be bad for you. Constantly forcing positivity, especially during challenging and difficult times, can result in the suppression (抑制) of your emotions. Not being afraid of your emotions is healing, which can bring you peace. Forcing certain feelings, even positive ones, takes away the chances of experiencing and being honest about what your feelings really are. Negative thoughts and emotions are real. They are part of the human experience and we should accept and explore them rather than ignore them. It’s OK not to be OK. Not being OK is part of life sometimes, and facing it with courage can open the door to recovery. Of course, allowing yourself to be overcome by negativity and not being positive at all is not the way to go either. Balance is the key here. Although that is easier said than done, it all originates from honesty. You can get there. So, it is OK to feel both your negative feelings and the positive ones. They are there for a reason, either to warn you of something, guide you towards something, or inform you of something. You don’t have to run away from them or hide from them. All you need to do is be honest. Be yourself and be authentic. Allow yourself to feel the feeling, the good, the bad and the ugly. Positivity can be a great thing. But remember to use it in moderation and not as a way to suppress how you are actually feeling. 8. Why is New Scientist mentioned? A. To present a common belief. B. To introduce a new theory. C. To support an argument. D. To explain a concept. 9. What’s the author’s attitude towards suppressing one’s negative emotions? A. Mixed. B. Opposed. C. Supportive. D. Unclear. 10. What can we infer from the passage about negative emotions? A. They are natural and serve important purposes. B. They should always be avoided for mental health. C. They are unnecessary and harmful to personal growth. D. They only appear when people lack a positive attitude. 11. What message does the author intend to deliver? A. Mental health really counts. B. Negative emotions are of great harm. C. Balancing positivity and negativity is necessary. D. Positivity and negativity interact with each other. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“According to the journal New Scientist, being positive to an extreme extent can be bad for you. Constantly forcing positivity, especially during challenging and difficult times, can result in the suppression of your emotions.(根据《新科学家》杂志的说法,过度积极可能对你有害。 根据第二段“Not being afraid of your emotions is healing, which can bring you peace. Forcing certain feelings, even positive ones, takes away the chances of experiencing and being honest about what your feelings really are.(不畏惧自己的情绪是一种治愈,它能带给你平静。 和第三段“Negative thoughts and emotions are real. They are part of the human experience and we should accept and explore them rather than ignore them.(消极的想法和情绪是真实的。 根据第三段“Negative thoughts and emotions are real. They are part of the human experience and we should accept and explore them rather than ignore them.(消极的想法和情绪是真实的。 和第四段“So, it is OK to feel both your negative feelings and the positive ones. They are there for a reason, either to warn you of something, guide you towards something, or inform you of something.(所以,感受你的负面情绪和正面情绪都是可以的。 故选A。 根据最后一段“Positivity can be a great thing. But remember to use it in moderation and not as a way to suppress how you are actually feeling.(积极是一件好事。 C。 D Will chatbots that can generate fascinating articles destroy education as we know it? New York City’s Department of Education banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT from school owned networks and devices, arguing that while it provides quick answers, it does not build critical thinking skills, which are necessary for academic and lifelong success.” However, banning AI tools from the classroom is a short-sighted response. Instead, we must find a way in which such technologies combine well with, rather than replace, student thinking. Banning ChatGPT is impossible in practice. Students will find ways around it, which will cause a further defensive response from educators. It’s hard to believe that a close race between digitally fluent teenagers and their educators will end in a decisive victory for the latter. In fact, chat-bots may well speed up a trend toward valuing critical thinking. In a world where computers can fluently answer any question, students — and the rest of us — need to learn to ask better questions and critically evaluate AI-generated responses. The key challenge is ensuring students still engage in deep thinking. GPT often generates text that is fluent and “reasonable” — but wrong. So using it requires the same mental heavy lifting that writing does: forming an opinion, creating an outline, picking which points to explain and which to drop, and looking for supporting facts. GPT and similar AI technology can help with those tasks, but they can’t — at least in the near future — put them all together. Writing a good essay still requires lots of human thought and work. Indeed, writing is thinking, and authentically good writing is authentically good thinking. One approach is to focus on the process as much as the end result. For instạnce, teachers might require — and assess — four drafts of an essay. After all, as John McPhee, the famous writer, said, “The essence of the process is revision.” Each draft gets feedback from the teacher, from peers or even from a chatbot. Then the students produce the next draft, and so on. Will AI one day outperform human beings not just in knowing but in thinking? Maybe, but for now, we must think for ourselves. Like any tool, GPT is an enemy of thinking only if we fail to find ways to make it our partner. 12. How does the author feel about the ban? A. Favourable. B. Irresponsible. C. Unwise. D. Necessary. 13. Why is it impossible to ban ChatGPT in practice? A. Because students will likely find solutions. B. Because people treasure critical thinking. C. Because ChatGPT will keep developing. D. Because schools will defend the ban. 14. How does the author explain his idea in Paragraph 4? A. By quoting others. B. By presenting figures. C. By giving examples. D. By showing similarities. 15. What might be the best title of the text? A. Is GPT a process or a result? B. Will GPT outperform students? C. Are chatbots becoming a new trend? D. Will chatbots destroy education? C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段“However, banning AI tools from the classroom is a short-sighted response.(然而,禁止在课堂上使用人工智能工具是一种短视的反应。)” 根据第三段“Banning ChatGPT is impossible in practice. Students will find ways around it, which will cause a further defensive response from educators.(实际上,禁止ChatGPT是不可能的。 故选A。 根据第四段“The key challenge is ensuring students still engage in deep thinking. Indeed, writing is thinking, and authentically good writing is authentically good thinking.(关键的挑战是确保学生仍然进行深度思考。 根据第一段“Will chatbots that can generate fascinating articles destroy education as we know it?(能够生成引人入胜的文章的聊天机器人会摧毁我们所知的教育吗?)” No parent likes to hear their child complaining about being bored, and it can feel like a personal attack when your child tells you, “there’s nothing to dooooooooooooo.” ____16____ And it’s something we can all get better at managing. She knew how to make seven meals. That was all. Each of her meals began with the same letter as the day of the week, like Fish Fridays and Spaghetti Saturdays. Today was Meatloaf (肉糕) Monday, again. I pushed my food back and forth on my plate, watching the sad meatloaf spread around. Noticing that, Jeanie pushed her plate away too. At eleven, I should have set an example for my younger sister. But today, I felt out of sorts. I grabbed the salt shaker and pointedly shook it all over my food to show my dislike. A look of hurt and disappointment crossed my mom’s face. The next day, our teacher announced a cooking competition to finish off our unit on kitchen skills. It would be like the show MiniChef, where contestants created dishes using only the provided ingredients (材料). The difference was that we all had to make a specific dish assigned by the judges within an hour. As he revealed the grand prize — the newest book in the Cave of the Dragons series — the class erupted in cheers. The book was a treasure, nearly impossible to find. At break, everyone was talking about the competition, wondering which dish we would be asked to make. Tania, my best friend, was confident she would win. She claimed to have her dad’s genes and her dad was an amazing cook. My thoughts shifted to my family. I couldn’t help but wish my mom were a professional chef; then I wouldn’t be stuck with the repetitive meatloaf. To be honest, it tasted good, but I was just tired of it. On the day of the competition, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. As we filed into the kitchen classroom, the judges handed out the ingredients: beef, onions, eggs, and seasonings (调料). Since I had learned accurate measuring, food preparation and cooking techniques this term, I felt confident to cook with creativity. Then the judges announced that the dish we had to make was meatloaf. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I looked at my creation proudly, waiting for the judges to taste it. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Then the judges announced that the dish we had to make was meatloaf. I couldn’t believe my ears. Meatloaf? The dish I had seen my mom make countless times? Memories of my mom preparing meatloaf came flooding back. I began combining the beef with the onions. As I stirred them, I could almost hear Mom’s voice instructing me. To add a personal touch, I even used tomato sauce. As I baked the meatloaf, the familiar smell floated up, reminding me of Meatloaf Mondays at home. With the timer finally going off, I pulled my meatloaf out. I looked at my creation proudly, waiting for the judges to taste it. When they reached me, I held my breath. They took a bite, nodded, and moved on. After all the dishes were tasted, the judges announced the winner. To my astonishment, it was me! Winning the book was amazing, but what mattered more was the newfound appreciation I had for my mom. From that day on, Meatloaf Monday became a family favorite, not because of the dish itself, but because of what it represented: love, effort, and the ability to make the best out of any situation. 词汇激活 动作类 ①指导:instruct/direct/guide ②宣布:announce/declare ③充分利用:make the best (out) of/ as best one can/ try one’s best 情感类 ①惊讶:can’t believe one’s ears/ in astonishment/ in wide-eyed amazement/ freeze with shock/ one’s jaw drops ②紧张,焦虑:hold one’s breath/ be a bag of nerves/ get tensed up/ be on edge 【点睛】【高分句型1】As I baked the meatloaf, the familiar smell floated up, reminding me of Meatloaf Mondays at home. I sat watching understanding both sides. C It is commonly believed that we should adopt a positive attitude towards life. B Negative emotions are of great harm. C. Balancing positivity and negativity is necessary. D. Positivity and negativity interact with each other. D Will chatbots that can generate fascinating articles destroy education as we know it? She knew how to make seven meals. That was all. Each of her meals began with the same letter as the day of the week, like Fish Fridays and Spaghetti Saturdays. Today was Meatloaf (肉糕) Monday, again. I pushed my food back and forth on my plate watching the sad meatloaf spread around. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
