The snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening. On the way home from work,I filled up

get some for dinner.
Then the snow started, and came down so fast that it screamed. It was terrifying!I didn't

heavy snowstorm at night?Would it be invisible?Was I on someone's farm?Or worse,was I on
the wrong side of the road?I searched my location online and figured out that I was on a road called
Bouvier Lane.It was now 6:30 p.m.I posted this new information to my online community group,
asking anyone who knew someone nearby to rescue me.
At 8 p.m.,my phone rang.It was the daughter of the farmer who owned the land beside the

flashlight().It was Andre Bouvier,80 years old, who'd walked half a mile through the
snowstorm to find me,fighting the wind and snow each step of the way. When we reached his
house a few minutes later,I got out of the car and burst into tears. All my fears disappeared and I
was grateful.
The experience let me approach challenges and surprises with a sense of calm.It reminded me

On an early winter morning,a small group of students and tourists were taking pictures of the
horses with their phones. These horses, known locally as takhi and globally as Przewalski's horse,
are unique. They are the only type that has never been trained and they are the fruits of one of the
most successful ever wildlife reintroduction plans of Hustai National Park.
"Horses are key to our culture.Everyone is glad to have them back, says Dashpurev with a
smile, who is in charge of Hustai National Park.Once hunted to extinction in the wild in the
1960s,Przewalski's horses now number nearly 1,000 at three sites across Mongolia,as well as in
China and Kazakhstan. The largest population-numbering 423-is in central Mongolia's Hustai
National Park. These horses are descendants()of 84 animals that were airlifted from European
zoos in the 1990s.
"Before the reintroduction,no one believed we could save this species, recalls Dashpurev.
Now,the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN)has downgraded Przewalski's
horse from "critically endangered"to "endangered",marking a significant milestone in their
recovery.
However, despite this success story,Mongolia faces numerous challenges in protecting its
other species.Besides hunting, the climate emergency is putting more pressure.Temperatures are
rising three times faster than the global average, bringing more extreme weather events that wipe
out large numbers of animals.
Faced with this crisis, the government has taken actions to protect wild areas. In 1998,
Mongolia promised to protect 30%of its territory by 2030-a goal adopted by 100 other countries
in 2021.So far it is on 21%.Last year, the president launched a drive to plant 1 billion trees by
2030 and tough fines have had success in stopping illegal hunting.
Yet these efforts are hamstrung()by a lack of funding."The government wants to grow
the economy. That's the key thing for them,so they are putting a lot of effort into agriculture and
mining,"says Buuveibaatar,a scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society."Wildlife is ignored.
As a result, some of its conservation areas are paper parks. The Przewalski's horse reintroduction
plan is an example of how to save wildlife.Now.the challenge lies in introducing this success to the
rest of the country's other wildlife."
8.Why are these horses unique according to the passage?
A.They are airlifted from European zoos.B.They are successfully introduced species.
C.They are the only true wild horse species.D.They can only be photographed in Mongolia.
9.What was the public's attitude towards saving these horses before the reintroduction?
A.Relieved.
B.Supportive.
C.Uninterested.
D.Doubtful.

11.What does Buuveibaatar imply in the last paragraph?
A.Hustai National Park provides a positive model.
B.The government's focus should be on the economy.
C.Other countries can help by following the footsteps.
D.The Przewalski's horse is the only one worth saving.

Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one
day help out in surgery(外科手术)?
Scientists have designed this small,"insect-bot"called mCLARI that can control and even
change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It's 2 centimetres
long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimetres per second. It's the
smaller, faster replacement to CLARI,which was designed by the same team.
"Because of the robot's small size and ability to change shape,we expect usage of this
technology in four important areas,"the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster
response, check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment.
"In the long term,we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human
bodies and performing surgeries that can't be easily done at present,"Jayaram said. With
mCLARI,Jayaram's team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different
environments-just like the insects they're inspired by.
The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running
forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body
through joints(),which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment
it is in.For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50%in certain spaces.
As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while
helping the surgeries."We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on
improving functions of robots,Jayaram said."And this is sure a great one-step forward of the
technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to
mankind,especially in medical treatment."

It is an efficient way for you to make the most of mind mapping to create projects, plans and
ideas.16 Here are the four steps of mind mapping and how you can apply them in your life.
17 If we take the example of presenting something to an audience, ask yourself,"What
exactly do I want to tell my audience?"and "What do I want them to leave knowing?"The clearer
your question is,the better answers you will get.Once you know your question, write that down in
the middle of the page.
Once you have your question written down, let yourself go.Don't try and edit yourself. No
matter how crazy, wild,or stupid something may seem at first, get it down onto your mind map.
18 Editing yourself at an early stage will not produce your best ideas.
After your initial brainstorm, giving yourself a few days will produce more ideas and expand
others.A few days later, come back to your mind map and give yourself another hour or two with
it.You will find you have a lot more ideas to add.Meanwhile, you may also see ideas that don't
work.19 After this session, you will have a lot of ideas, answers, and steps.
The next stage is where you make small changes about these ideas and start to structure the next
step. You now need to decide in what order you will move forward.Once you have all your ideas and
points numbered, you can then move those to your to-do list and place them in the right order. You may
find that as you begin working on your project, you may change your order round.20
A.You can remove ideas later.
B.It doesn't encourage you to go deeper with your ideas.
C.You can leave them just in case they bring more ideas later.
D.Your brain is likely to give you unrealistic or unclear answers.

Adam,my 6-year-old son,has a natural curiosity about the world around him and likes asking
many questions.
One afternoon,my son came home from school with a puzzled look on his face. After being
asked what was on his mind,he said,"Are all people the same even if their skin colour is
different?"
I thought for a moment, and then I said,"I'll explain if you can just wait until we make a
quick stop at the grocery store.I have something interesting to show you."
At the grocery store,I told him that we needed to buy apples. We went to the produce section
where we bought some red apples, green apples and yellow apples.
At home, while we were putting all the groceries away,I told Adam,"It's time to answer
your question."I put one of each type of apples on the countertop:First a red apple, followed by a
green apple and then a yellow apple. Then I looked at Adam, who was sitting on the other side of
the counter.
"Adam, people are just like apples. They come in all different colours, shapes and sizes.See,
some of the apples have been bumped around and are bruised()On the outside, they may not
even look as delicious as the others. However, things are not always what they seem.As the saying
goes, you can never judge a book by its cover."As I was talking,Adam was examining each one
carefully.
"Now,just look at me and follow my instructions, and I'll demonstrate something interesting
to you,"I told Adam, who looked at me with a curious look in his eyes. Then,I took each of the
apples and peeled()them,placing them back on the countertop, but in a different place.

Paragraph 1:
Then.I asked Adam which was the red apple.the green one and
the yellow one.Staring at the three apples in confusion.Adam said."1
can't tell. They all look the same now.""Now you know how
ridiculous it is to focus on the outside appearance alone,"I told Adam.
Meanwhile,I intended to help him realize the importance of the inner
qunlity of things. So I instrueted him to take a bite of each one to see if
that helped him figure out which one was which.
Paragraph 2:
He took big bites, and then a huge smile came across his face.
"People are just like apples! They are all different, but once you take
off the outside, they're pretty much the same on the inside.""Right."
I agreed."Just like how everyone has their own personality but is still
basically the same.So don't judge people by their outward
appearanee."He totally got it.I didn't need to say or do anything else.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. It's also true that a
