Imagine an infinite()number of monkeys each typing randomly on a typewriter, will one of
them,by any chance, type out the complete works of William Shakespeare one day?
According to the Infinite Monkey Theory, the answer is yes,as long as you give them time long
enough. This theory, developed in 1913 by French mathematician Emile Borel, aims to demonstrate that
with enough time, random actions can produce ordered and meaningful results. However,as sound as the
idea may seem.a new study has shown that it does not hold up in the contert of our reality.
The study was carried out by Stephen Woodcock and Jay Falletta, two mathematicians at the
University of Technology Sydney in Australia. They looked at the possibility of various lengths of texts
being typed by 200.000 chimpanzees()-toughly the current global population of the species. Each
chimpanzee was imagined to hit one key per second and continue at this rate for up to a googol(10)
years,by which time, according to a physics theory, the entire universe will have "died".
During the study, the mathematicians discovered that within its lifetime,a single chimpanzee has a 5
percent chance of typing the word "bananas".The likelihood of a chimpanzee producing even a short
sentence is also extremely low.For example, the chance of a monkey typing the phrase"I chimp,
therefore I am"is calculated to be about 1 in 1,025.So,what are the odds of a chimpanzee producing all
884,647 words of Shakespeare's works in a googol years? The answer is about 6.4X104,which may
as well be zero, noted Science Alert.
In short, while the theory might be mathematically true,it is potentially misleading in our finite
universe."It shows how assuming infinite resources when analyzing problems can lead to results that are not
relevant or realistic in the real world, where resources are always limited,"said Woodcock in a statement.
⑨
1.What does the Infinite Monkey Theory suggest?
A.Monkeys can be trained to write novels.B.Monkeys are naturally good at learning.
C.Patterns appear logically from randomness.D.Randomness can leads to meaningful results.
2.What can we learn from Woodcock and Falletta's study?
A.They adjusted the limits of randomness.
B.They assessed the applicability of the theory.
C.They found monkeys'most frequent word.
D.They explored monkeys'behavioral patterns.
3.How was the study conducted?
A.By analyzing the texts typed by chimpanzees.
B.By observing real chimpanzees typing words.
C.By calculating probabilities on a typing model.
D.By involving chimpanzees with typing abilities.
4.Why does Woodcock believe the theory is "potentially misleading"?
A.It ignores practical limits.
B.It overestimates monkeys'ability.
C.It applies only to simple problems.
D.It conflicts with random-order relationship.

Education is the best tool when it comes to protecting our cultural heritage. It assists us in
understanding the importance of conserving aspects of human life.1
Teaching Everyone Why Heritage Matters.
Suppose society did not know why specific structures or specific dances were essential. This is
where education comes into play.2 Thus,we can learn about the history of these treasures.
This knowledge makes people appreciate their cultures since they can identify what makes them
different from other regions and have the urge to protect them.
Bringing Heritage into Schools.
Have you ever been in a history or an art class, and suddenly the teacher starts talking about a
specific building or painting? That is because schools are introducing heritage into their courses.
This way, students become familiar with history and craft culture.3
4
It is not enough to know why preserving our heritage is necessary:it is also necessary to know
how to do it correctly. This is where training programs come into help. They educate those who
handle old structures or artifacts()on maintaining them in their excellent state. These
programs range from architects to museum curators(负责人),and they equip them with the tools
to protect our heritage for the future.
5 Therefore,it tells us why our cultural heritages are so valuable, integrates (
heritage into education, promotes the interactions between professionals, and enables communities
to act.
A.Training people to be heritage heroes.
B.Understanding the ways of preserving heritage.
C.They also learn the value of preserving such items.
D.Education in schools teaches us to respect cultural heritage.

NASA has even proposed sci-fi plans to potentially shut down a super volcano. But such a
geologic proposal might not ever be necessary. In new research from NASA's Goddard Institute for
Space Studies and Columbia University, scientists found that after the most powerful scale of
eruption,a deep, cold volcanic winter that would destroy the global food chain wouldn't ensue.
A super-eruption would burst an enormous number of sun-reflecting droplets into Earth's
atmosphere, but these droplets would then pile up together.Crucially, the larger particles()
are less efficient at reflecting sunlight, because there's less surface area for sunlight to reflect off.
What's more, the particles also trap heat radiating off Earth-similar to the greenhouse gases
currently driving climate change. So while some solar radiation is being blocked, radiation coming
from our planet is also being absorbed, which causes a temporary warming effect.
The group of scientists adventured to a pre-historic site along Ethiopia's Shinfa River.
Crucially, tiny pieces of volcanic glass are dropped around the site, which chemically-match output
from the Toba volcano, which erupted in Indonesia 74,000 years ago.
The mighty eruption changed the environment in this region of Africa. But the researchers
argue that these people didn't simply survive, but their need to seek out new water for hunting and
fishing opportunities could have helped drive one of the human movements out of Africa.
"Volcanoes wouldn't be greatly destructive. We can be confident of this because there have
been two massive explosions while humans were present on Earth, and both of these were actually
larger than Yellowstone's most recent cataclysmic eruption,"the US Geologic Survey said.

Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge.It's a long,dangerous journey.And astronauts
will have to take everything they need.1 Launching things into space is expensive."To get to
Mars,we already have the technology, says Michael Flynn."The problem is,it's costly."
2 Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff, why not build Water
Walls-a recycling system and use the stuff as part of the spaceship?
Making oxygen and taking away carbon dioxide-the waste gas you breathe out-is one
problem in space.Water Walls will remove carbon dioxide the same way it's done here on Earth-
with living plants.Living plants take in carbon dioxide to make their food, and give off oxygen.
But plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft.3 Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae
will live in bags in the walls too,fed by poop and sunlight, eating up carbon dioxide and making
oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.
4It's compact(紧密的),efficient, and doesn't need a lot of fancy machinery that might
break down.A mission to Mars will require astronauts to get back to nature.
Alas, the human body needs a lot of help to survive in space. If only we were more like the
tardigrade!Tardigrades are very tiny insect-like creatures that live in soil. When they find
themselves in danger, they roll themselves up into a ball and dry out.In this state they can survive
without food or water for 100 years.5
A.Algae can be a good choice.
B.Nothing is wasted in the spacecraft.
C.But Flynn thinks he has a solution.
D.So a trip to Mars is full of packing challenge.
E.If only we could train them to fly a spaceship.
F.This onboard recycling system has many advantages.
G.The more you take, the more rockets you must launch, and the more it costs.

As I've grown older and experienced my ageing memory.I've often reflected on the
possibility of a miracle cure that would rejuvenate it.As if in answer to my wishful thinking,
not one but several reports recently appeared, highlighting a trending solution of which I was blissfully
unatare-Bacopa monnieri,an aquatic flower.A new study which concluded that ingesting bacopa
brought significant improvements in both memory and cognition skills.
I delved deeper. My search led me to a surprising source-Ayurvedic medicine.
It would be true to say that millions of people over the centuries have relied on this supplement
(for health and mental health benefits. However, history and tradition teach us many
things, but not all of them are true. And,therefore,I asked myself:What about the scientific
evidence?
It's true to say that some of the papers find that bacopa is positive for improved memory and
reduced anxiety. But by no means do all studies show that bacopa improves memory and anxiety. In
fact,in 2021 a review of bacopa research stated that there are only limited studies (six to date)to
establish the memory-enhancing and brain-protecting effects of bacopa.
Then I asked myself,is it safe? The FDA states,"Many dietary supplements contain ingredients(
that have strong biological effects which may con flict with a medicine you are taking."Such effects
are known in bacopa because it inhibits (an important brain chemical called acetylcholine and
therefore could counteract cholinergic drugs for conditions such as dementia and glaucoma.
The moral here is that before spending your hard-earned money on a promising product that has been
seized upon by millions, you should pause, read, research, think and then, based on real evidence, commit
one way or the other. After all, since the days of Newton, science has served us pretty well.

A.Bacopa is proven useless for memory.
B.Scientific evidence remains insufficient.

原⑩Not a single Mount Lyell shrew(菜尔山的)had ever been photographed alive before, making
them the only known mammal species in California to have eluded human cameras.
That all changed in October last year when recently graduated wildlife photographer Vishal along
with student scientists Jain and Forbes ventured out into the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and
captured six live Mount Lyell shrews (Sorex lyelli). There, they photographed and observed them before
setting them free. The Mount Lyell shrew was first described by a scientist over 100 years ago,but since
then,it hasn't been studied much.Three college students were determined to change that.
The team set more than 100 pitfall traps, designed for shrews to fall into as they walked across
the ground, and constantly monitored the traps for three consecutive days, only sleeping for two
hours at a time to monitor the animals'wellbeing.
“They bite and they're venomous(有毒的).So we had to improvise quite a bit.We had to
weigh them in plastic bags, and they're only a few grams, but they chew(through the plastic
bags.They're kind of a pain generally,but they're worth it,"a student explained.
They also recorded four different species of shrews in the area, some of whom were so similar to the
Mount Lyell shrew that they later ran genetic tests to confirm that they had indeed spotted one.
Photographing live animals, particularly ones who are smaller and more obscure, also allows the
public to connect with them, helping conservation efforts.Mount Lyell shrews are extremely threatened
by the climate crisis and could lose up to 90%of their cold, high altitude habitat as the Earth warms.
"Without that kind of public awareness and outreach through photographs, the species could have
just quietly disappeared under the radar, and nobody would have had any idea about it,"said Vishal.
1.What drove the students to observe the shrew?
A.The unpredictability of the shrews'habitat.
B.The lack of research of the shrews.
C.Climate threats to the shrews.
D.The unique mammal status of shrews.
2.What's the challenge of handling the shrews?
A.Their inability to survive in captivity.
B.Their dangerous and destructive nature.
C.Their refusal to eat during the study.
D.Their tendency to escape unnoticed.
3.Why did researchers perform genetic tests on the captured shrews?
A.To study their venomous properties.
B.To separate them from other physically similar shrews.
C.To analyze their food-storing behavior.
D.To measure their adaptability to environments.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.First live photos of Mount Lyell shrews.
B.Discovery of new shrew species.
C.Study of shrews'venomous bites.
D.Climate impact on shrew habitats.
