Karen Keech Swerling worked in Hollywood as a costume designer for three decades. She and her
husband were looking for a change of pace in retirement,so they traded their house in Malibu for an early
1900s Victorian in Richmond's museum district.Swerling turned the basement into a studio for her
nonprofit organization,Richmond Really Sews, and she offered free classes to anyone loving sewing.
Swerling said,"People chat while they're sewing and become friends-I love it.Sewing allows
us to express where we come from and how we feel.We can't do that if we go to the store."
Members are people of different backgrounds.Every Saturday afternoon, they gather around
30 work stations with different sewing machines. On Nov.2nd,they showcased their work at their
annual fundraiser,Richmond Frocktails.While Swerling donates()her time and talent,she
relies on money raised at the event to cover sewing machine maintenance and supplies.
In spring, the group went to New York City, where they encountered famous fabric designers
at Elliott Berman and Metro Textiles. When they returned to Richmond, they received a surprise:
a 60-pound box of fabrics from Elliott Berman."They're sustainable fabries from France and Italy
and really high-end fabrics,"Swerling said.
Swerling says she loves sharing her knowledge as a way of honouring the teachers at
California's Long Beach City College,where she met a significant teacher,Alicia Annas,who
helped her research the business and introduced her to friends in Hollywood.
Swerling's first project was"Esperanza".Though unpaid, the work made her known and brought her
into the clothing industry so that she was able to go on to design the costumes.Over the next 33 years,

It's been 50 years since the beginning of bar codes().Scanning an item at checkout is
something we take for granted in this age of convenience.1
On March 31,1971,a historic meeting took place in New York City. The meeting agreed to
create a system to uniquely identify every single product, calling it the Global Trade Item Number
(GTIN),the core of bar codes,according to El Mudo,a Spanish newspaper.2 Today,bar
codes are scanned over 6 billion times every day, used by 2 million companies worldwide and
remain one of the most trusted symbols in the world,PR Newswire,a US news agency, reported.
3 Where does the product come from?Where has it been? Its price expiration
(过期时间),you name it.Bar codes don't only identify the category of goods but also manage the
number of goods. For example,if there are 10 cartons of milk and a consumer takes one,it will be
registered when it is scanned at the cash counter,so the store owner knows there are nine left.
4 The unique identification of products at a global level was the key that opened the door to
retail(零售)as we know it today.
In the past five decades, bar codes have provided many conveniences for commerce."The next
generation of bar codes, such as QR codes can hold vastly more information.Their use,for
example,.can tell consumers if a product contains allergens(过敏原)or if it is organie,5”
according to GS1,the organization that develops and maintains the global bar codes standard.
⑨
A.Time has proved it a great decision.
B.It gives consumers a greater level of trust,
C.What information does a bar code contain?
D.When do we scan a bar code on the product?
E.We can thank the game-changing technology for that.
F.The numbers can indicate where that product is identified.
G.It allows the first digitization in the control of the goods for sale.

The measure of beauty is something that has worried humans for a very long time, and this is
still a hot topic in the 21st century, whether male or female, people since ancient times have
experienced judgement being passed by others based on their appearance, whether in stating
preferences for marriage partners,in the securing of a job,or even in offering help to a stranger.
From a biological angle, human beings are able to appreciate their own as well as the outer
appearance of others. This has its basis in the physical world around us,where many living things
found in nature are closely linked to the perfection that the golden ratio()shows.So,the
pure physical perfection in the build of a male happens when the shoulder-to-waist ratio of a man is
equal to 1.618,the golden ratio.Bodybuilders thus train to get a perfect figure in males.Likewise,
women try to have an hourglass figure, through whatever ways, whether by dieting and exercise,
or through make-up or plastic surgery.
However,is beauty an objective feature or a subjective one considered through the "eye of the
beholder(旁观者)”?Research carried out worldwide on beauty shows that the way people view
beauty differs across time and culture.Hardly any common features exist across all cultures. This
completely explains that cultural evaluations()of beauty greatly differ.
As John Keats said,"A thing of beauty is a joy forever",as long as we,as a human race, have
the power to recognize and appreciate different forms of beauty in our fellow human beings,we will
continue to increase our awareness of aesthetic()and find a reason to admire and value the
different aspects of beauty which make each of us uniquely beautiful.

4.What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.Different aspects of our life are affected by aesthetic.

Does technology replace more jobs than it creates? What is the balance between these two
things?Until now, that has not been completely measured. However,a new research project led by
MIT economist David Autor has developed an answer,at least for US history since 1940.
The study uses new methods to examine how many jobs have been lost because of machine
automation(自动化),and how many jobs have been created through augmentation(扩增),in
which technology creates new chances and tasks. In this research,Autor and his workmates studied
about 35,000 jobs, recording how they appear over time. That led them to find that technology has
replaced more US jobs than it has created, particularly since 1980.
"Clearly, from 1980 to the present, there is a faster rate of automation and a slower rate of
augmentation than in the former 40 years,"says Autor.From 1940 to 1980,for example,jobs like
elevator operator and typesetter(排字工人)were getting automated..But at the same time, more
workers filled roles such as shipping and receiving clerks, buyers, department heads and industrial
engineers. From 1980 to 2020,the number of machinists()dropped because of automation,
while operations and systems researchers enjoyed growth. Finally, the research suggests that the
negative effects of automation on employment were more than twice as great in the 1980-2020
period as in the 1940-1980 period. There was a more positive change in the effect of augmentation
on employment in 1980-2020 compared to 1940-1980.
Automation and augmentation often happen within the same industries.Within the same large
company, there may be fewer machinists but more systems researchers."Technology is really
making a difference,"Autor says."It may substitute some expert knowledge or skills, but may add
decision-making tasks. It takes a while to figure them out."
1.What does Autor's study focus on?
A.The key to searching for a job.
B.The solutions to taking up new tasks.
C.The influence of new technology on jobs.D.The application of machines to industry.
2.How does the author prove his idea in Paragraph 3?
A.By listing figures.B.By raising questions.C.By telling stories.
D.By giving examples.
3.What does the underlined word "substitute"in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Depend on.
B.Take the place of.C.Take control of.D.Concentrate on.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Are Jobs More Challenging or More Friendly?
B.Are New Technologies Job Killers or Creators?

For decades,scholars debated whether Indo-European languages-including
English,Russian,Greek and more, spread from the Eurasian steppe or from early farmers in
Anatolia,in what is now Turkiye.A new study presents strong genetic evidence linking Indo-European
origins to the steppe.
The researchers found that around 6,000 years ago,the Caucasus-Lower Volga (CLV)people
began migrating in two directions:One group moved west into what is now Ukraine and mixed
with local hunter-gatherers,eventually forming the Yamnaya genome.Another group moved south
into Anatolia, likely bringing an early form of Indo-European with them.
"We know that people such as Hittites spoke Anatoian, but these people didn't have Yamnaya
ancestry,"David Reich,a geneticist at Harvard and a senior author of the studies said."We
hypothesized()some deeper population was the ultimate source of Indo-European languages."
But not all experts are convinced that genetic data alone can pinpoint the origins of a language.
"Language is transmitted socially, not biologically-there isn't necessarily a direct link between
language and ancestry,"Guus Kroonen,a linguist at Leiden University, tells Andrew Curry from Science.
Still, many researchers believe the findings provide the strongest evidence yet for a steppe origin.
This study marks a major step forward in understanding how Indo-European languages spread
across the world, and helps dismantle 19th-and 20th-century racial theories that falsely claimed
Indo-European speakers belonged to a pure "Aryan"race.
Instead, the study paints a very different picture:Indo-European speakers came from a region
where multiple populations mixed and migrated over time.As linguists and geneticists continue to
untangle the origins of Indo-European languages, one thing is clear-the story of language is one of
movement, change and cultural exchange, far from the rigid, nationalist narratives of the past.
1.How was the Yamnaya genome generated?
A.CLV people displaced Anatolian farmers.B.Hunter-gatherers migrated to Anatolia.
C.CLV people mixed with local groups.
D.Hunter-gatherers adopted Indo-European.
2.Why did the author mentioned Guus's words?
A.To stress the study is also questioned.B.To make the study more convincing.
C.To show findings of other studies.
D.To challenge findings of previous studies.
3.What does the underlined word "dismantle"in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.Relieve.
B.Indicate.
C.Disprove.
D.Displace.
4.What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.The study is related to immigration.

"Depression impacts so many people right now,and we thought virtual reality(VR)could have
a large impact,"said Bullock, founder of Stanford's Neurobehavioral Clinic and Virtual Reality
program.“There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation(行为激话)in some patients-
they might be stuck in a hospital bed,or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities
like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated
pleasant activities could be a good first step for them."
The study by Bullock's team, published in JMIR Mental Health, followed 26 people with major
depressive disorder.Half were told to plan and take part in real life activities like going on outings in their
community or socializing with friends. The other half used a virtual reality headset to participate in activities
ranging from table tennis to touring foreign cities or attending shows. After four weeks, people in both
groups saw a decrease in their symptoms of depression and their depression rating by similar amounts.
"People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this
technology in their own homes,"said Margot Paul,a professor of mental and behavioral sciences.
Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms-especially those that have mobile
phones put into cheap cardboard headsets-make it an easy treatment to promote.
The team says further studies are needed to find how to practice virtual behavioral activation,
as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment.More efforts
are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately.

A.It provides easier access to mood-lifting activities.
B.It increases public awareness regarding depression.
C.It motivates those with serious depression to get out.
