for.Time would tell.
Every night for most of my life,I remove from my trousers the items I'm going to need the
next day-keys,wallet and hankie,if it's still unused.After 60 years,my body weight feels wrong
if I'm heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.
I am sure this habit has sometimes shocked friends and colleagues who've noticed it as a little
quaint, but in a polite company nobody comments on somebody else's business. That rule of
behaviour,of course, did not apply to one's children in the late 20th century. When my three kids
were growing up,they all let me know whenever they could that my hankie was as ridiculously old-
fashioned as a top hat and a walking stick. They had their arguments,"If you have to be prepared
every day for a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues?"
Point taken-especially in the time of pandemic. But a cotton handkerchief is a lot more
durable than tissues, creates no waste, and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle
of a pot that's boiling over with a tissue?Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and runny
noses that hankie wiped? In fact, for Father's Day last year my wife gave me several new
handkerchiefs. And by now, neither of us can count the number of times her eyes have welled up at
a movie,or,as happens, she's needed to blow her nose.
Yet not even my mother could have expected the hankie's new role as an Essential Public Health
Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching
your face. Here is an answer.Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a
DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.

"Why didn't they understand me?I was as clear as I could be."Everyone has had this thought
at one time or another. In Failing to Com municate,Dr.Roger Kreuz explores the answers to these
questions.
We are exposed to the dangers of miscommunication early in life.As children,we play the
Telephone Game and learn an important lesson about the fragility()of long communication
chains. And as adults, people interrupt each other,on average.about every ninety seconds in order
to check their understanding.Despite such alarm, however,a great deal of what is said and written
is not understood as intended.
Miscommunication has led to military defeats, the loss of spacecraft, and even more tragically,
accidents that cost human lives. It plays a role in road rage and social media feuds().It appears in the
courtroom, the boardroom, and different occasions.Failing to Communicate includes dozens of such
examples and explains how communication works-and why it so often fails.
Researchers have showed plenty of specific factors that contribute to misunderstanding. Some
of these have to do with how our minds make sense of what we hear and read, while others are the
result of cognitive, social, and cultural factors. The very structure()of a given language can
be problematic as well.In short, there are plenty of underlying causes.
Issues of misunderstanding have only grown as new mediums for communication have arisen.
Emails, texts, and social media posts are even more problematic for there are no facial cues, tone
of voice, gestures, and even the creative use of silence in the communication.

If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help? How about
lending them five dollars for the bus,if they said they'd return and pay you back?
Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers.A recent study found that our ability to
trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic-it could be rooted in
our DNA.This is important,as it turns out that trusting people might actually live longer and
healthier lives compared to more skeptical(怀疑的)people.
Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others.
One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it's
influenced by a person's ongoing evaluation of the social environment. We can easily imagine that
the answer to the question "Would you say that most people can be trusted?"would depend on
whether you'd been robbed the day before or if you'd had your missing wallet returned.
This is where the recent research comes in.A professor of Lund University,Edgerton and his
coworkers have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, involving 33,882
Danish blood donors, they found a single gene()-PLPP4,strongly associated with the
personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6%of the difference in social
trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life
experiences, this gene alone could account for 6%of the difference in how much they trust others.
082英语·∞黑白题高一上
They believe that the PLPP4 gene may somehow soften our "fight-or-flight"survival response.
If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people,it makes sense that trusting
others could have huge health benefits.Indeed,if trusting others acts as something against stress,
it may lower the risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease.
As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear:understanding its
genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world.
12.What might affect people's trust levels according to the two main theories?
A.Childhood habits.
B.Personal abilities.
C.Social experiences.
D.Communication skills.
13.What does the recent study focus on?
A.The mental cause of trust.
B.The ways to develop survival ability.
C.The characteristies of different genes.
D.The connection between trust and a gene.
14.What does the passage say about trusting others?
A.It could bring health benefits.
B.It reduces the strong stress in work.
C.It helps to develop the world faster.
D.It causes quicker survival response.
15.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.A Gene Influences How Trusting You Are B.Experiences Make You Grow Dependable
C.A Link Between Biology and Social Science D.Theories That Explain Why You Are Trusted

Life isn't fair. Some people just seem to have the ability to effortlessly charm anyone they
meet.Well,it might seem like a magical power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work.
16 The answer is:to a large degree,yes you can.
But first, the bad news.People first judge each other based simply on physical appearance.
With just a look of a face, people make quick judgments about each other's likeability,
trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this?17 People view a smiling face
as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn't it?Smile and
others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have?18 As a result, three things we can do to signal that we
are not a threat()are to:raise our eyebrows quickly, lift our heads slightly, and once again,
smile.
So,we've looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless
you want to just stand there smiling foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is that if you make
people feel good about themselves, they're going to like you.In other words, you should not talk
about yourself or your wonderful achievements.19

Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection.Charming people are particularly
skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to connect with others.Simple things like asking
where someone's from really can open up a discussion and allow you to find areas in common. And if all
else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics:the weather.20
A.There's one simple tool:your smile.
B.It can be a nice start of a conversation.
C.Instead, you need to show interest in them.
D.So,can you learn to develop superhuman charm?
E.What good tricks can we use to become charming?
F.Shared interests are the key to making connections with others.

On September 15,1752,twelve-year-old Lewis Hallam Jr.stood shaking on the stage, his
heart beating fast in his chest.Born in a family that worked in the theater, with his mother an
actress and his father the manager of their theater company,Lewis had never faced an audience
before.The theater,once a well-known place during the day,now seemed strange and scary,with
the walls moving in the light from the hanging lamps, and the air full of the smells of smoke, and
the press of the crowd, all eyes focused on him.The Hallam family's theater company had made
the journey from England to America earlier that year, and tonight's performance of Shakespeare's
The Merchant of Venice marked their first show in this new world.Lewis was clearly aware of the
importance of this play:their jobs in the future depended on how well this show did.
His father,a clever manager, thought that both Lewis and his big sister should be given roles
in the play because people often clapped()for kids, even if they weren't great at acting. This
was called the "clap trick".His sister had already done her part and people liked it a lot,and now it
was Lewis's turn.
He was to play a helper to Portia, the main girl in the play, with a single line to say.His mom
was playing Portia,so he simply had to walk up to her as she handed him a letter and say,
"Madam,I go with all convenient speed."As Lewis stood in the bright light, scared, his mom
smiled at him.She held out the letter and said,"But get thee gone.I shall be there before thee."It
was his time to talk.He must speak now.He looked at the audience, his tongue feeling heavy in his
mouth. Then, without saying anything,he started crying and ran off the stage.
