B Every morning on the island of O‘ahu, students at Pü‘öhala Elementary gather on a field as towering mountains watch them from the mist. Their day starts with songs in ‘ölelo Hawai‘i, the islands’ native language, restating values of respect that their teachers hope will guide them through their education, and throughout their lives. Like most kids their age, they’re not concerned about the significance of the language they’re learning. Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch (火炬) and ensure the security of ‘ölelo Hawai‘i for future generations. It was only 50 years ago that the language was on the edge of extinction. Though the situation is much improved, in many ways ‘ölelo Hawai‘i is still on life-support. Teachers say there’s a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they’re encouraged to focus on “more useful” subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work. In 2016, there were 18,610 Hawaiian speakers on the islands. “One hundred thousand is the approximate (大约的) number of speakers needed to consider the language safe,” says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. “The idea is that there are enough people passing it on to the next generation, socializing their children to use the language in their daily life, to express all thoughts and needs and desires.” Fortunately, the kids of Pū‘öhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘ölelo Hawai‘i in part through TikTok and Instagram, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better. 24. What are the students at Pū‘ōhala Elementary expected to do? A. To figure out the value of life. B. To go out of the island of O‘ahu. C. To pass their native language down. D. To draw people’s attention to folk songs. 25. What makes the students quit ‘ölelo Hawai‘i? A. The improved situation. B. Career development. C. Lack of enthusiasm. D. Little educational support. 26. What is the current situation of ‘ölelo Hawai‘i according to professor Solomon? A. It has one hundred thousand speakers. B. It is considered a safe language. C. It demands more speakers to be safe. D. It is used in all walks of life. 27. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of ‘ölelo Hawai‘i? A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful. C The term ''helicopter parents'' refers to ''a style of parents who are over focused on their children''. Helicopter parents are always making a big effort to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age I, homework at age 8, college application at age 18, employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30, 40 or even older. They constantly (不断地) shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time. Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons. Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their children’s life in an attempt to protect them. Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate (对……补偿过多) with their own children. When parents see other over-involved parents, it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents. The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen. Mary called the landlord to install (安装) an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations (协商), her mother rushed in and demanded action. ''I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated, '' says Mary. Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are in fact damaging their child's basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They're winning the battle, but in fact losing the war. 28 What's the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting? A. To make their children not ignored. B. To help their children find a good job. C. To do something good for their children. D. To get rid of the pressure from other parents. 29. What does the underlined word ''backfire'' in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Make an unwanted effect. B. Get a lot of support. C. Set fire in the backyard. D. Help to be independent. 30. What can we learn from the passage? A. Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life. B. Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children. C. Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run. D. Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems. 31. What will possibly be discussed in the following paragraph? A. The bad effects of helicopter parenting. B. How we can avoid being helicopter parents. C. Different opinions about helicopter parenting. D. The reasons for the development of helicopter parents. D Scientists agree that predicting (预测) when and where an earthquake will occur and how big it will be is not yet possible. Therefore, much research has focused on coming up with ways to reduce the damage from earthquakes, rather than trying to predict when they will occur. Specifically, finding more information about the place under the surface helps developers and others make safer choices when constructing a building. This is where Navakanesh M Batmanathan is putting his efforts. Batmanathan is an earthquake geologist at the National University of Malaysia. He is actively engaged in mapping the areas surrounding earthquakes in Borneo. Faults (断层) are places in the Earth’s crust (地壳) that are weak to sudden movement between masses of rock, resulting in occasional earthquakes. Batmanathan is working to map the faults, as well as the infrastructure (基础设施) in the area of the faults, to hopefully reduce the potential damage that can be caused by an earthquake. Developers and engineers can use this knowledge to plan where it is safest to build and where earthquake-resistant structures are needed. Batmanathan is using a variety of tools to map faults. Working on the ground to map the area is just one of the methods he employs. He also uses images from satellites and ground-penetrating radar (GPR). GPR is a technology that creates an underground image without digging. It has many applications, from finding the water level to understanding soil and rock types for construction projects. Batmanathan and others are using this technology to map faults, and the areas around faults, to gain a clearer picture of potential earthquake damage. It might not ever be possible to know exactly when or where an earthquake will happen, but Batmanathan hopes that his work will help educate people and better prepare them for earthquakes. 32. What is the function of paragraph 1? A. Introducing the topic. B. Giving suggestions. C. Providing evidence. D. Drawing a conclusion. 33. What is Batmanathan actively working on in Borneo? A. Mapping Borneo. B. Designing infrastructure. C. Studying faults. D. Planning building sites. 34. What do we know about GPR from paragraph 3? A. It can gather images from satellites. B. It can be quite multifunctional. C. It can test the quality of the soil. D. It can take pictures of earthquake. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Mapping Faults for Safer Construction B. So, when my job relocated me to a small town in Vermont, I felt a great contrast. My first morning in Vermont, I was awakened by the sounds of birds. It is a quiet, simple life where people know their neighbors, and everyone greets you with a smile. It took time to settle in, but I finally loved it. After managing my work here, I spend my free time trying local food, exploring the hiking roads and enjoying the pleasure of ice fishing when the lake is frozen. I wonder how my city friends would find excitement skiing in the mountains if I invited them here. Sure, I miss the excitement and the endless choices of New York at times. But Vermont offers a different kind of richness, a connection to nature and a sense of community I haven’t experienced before. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Books That Celebrate Diverse Holidays and Traditions It’s important to remember there are a diverse set of holidays available to explore. A To figure out the value of life. A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful. 【答案】24. C 25. B 26. C 27. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了夏威夷语的传承现状及人们为保护它所做的努力。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch and ensure the security of ‘ölelo Hawai‘i for future generations.(尽管如此,他们仍肩负着重大责任:接过火炬,确保夏威夷语在后代中的安全)”可知,Pū‘ōhala小学的学生被期望传承他们的母语。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Teachers say there’s a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they’re encouraged to focus on “more useful” subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work.(老师们说,学生们对学习这门语言有着极大的热情,但随着他们长大,他们被鼓励专注于“更有用”的科目,并使用英语,因为人们相信这有助于他们在工作中取得成功)”可知,职业发展使得学生们放弃学习夏威夷语。故选B。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段““One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe,” says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.(“要认为这种语言是安全的,大约需要10万名使用者,”夏威夷大学马诺阿分校的夏威夷语教授所罗门说)”可知,根据所罗门教授的说法,夏威夷语目前需要更多的使用者才能确保安全。故选C。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Fortunately, the kids of Pū‘ōhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘ölelo Hawai‘i in part through TikTok and Instagram, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better.(幸运的是,Pū‘ōhala小学的孩子们将承担起责任,继续当前捍卫语言的年轻人的工作,通过TikTok和Instagram等部分扩大夏威夷语的使用范围,使这种语言在成年后成为一项实用技能。这些年轻人,以及那些致力于从上一代人那里恢复这种语言的人,都分享着他们对美好未来的希望)”可知,作者对夏威夷语的未来是充满希望的。故选B。 C The term ''helicopter parents'' refers to ''a style of parents who are over focused on their children''. 28. What's the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting? 【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. (我们如何避免成为直升机式父母)符合以上猜测,故选B项。 D Scientists agree that predicting (预测) when and where an earthquake will occur and how big it will be is not yet possible. A It can gather images from satellites. B. It can be quite multifunctional. C. It can test the quality of the soil. D. It can take pictures of earthquake. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Mapping Faults for Safer Construction B. Challenges in Preventing Earthquakes C. The Future of Earthquake Prediction D. Technology for Reducing Earthquakes 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35.
