A young painter cleverly mixes traditional Chinese painting with puns
95后“草根毕加索”画家:将国画和谐音梗巧妙融合
A rooster is washing a mahjong tile with the Chinese character Fa (发) on it. This funny scene reminds us of the popular Chinese phrase gongxi facai (恭喜发财), through the clever use of homophony (谐音).
Zhang Mingxiang, 26, also known on social media as “Wo Shi Chao Ren CR”, created this interesting pun (双关语). The painter mixes traditional Chinese painting with homophonic elements (同音异义的元素). This creative style has got him over 1 million followers on Bilibili.
“I grew up with picture books,” Zhang said. “The more I read, the more I wanted to draw.”
Zhang used to draw by himself in the classroom during his middle school years. When he began sharing his paintings online, he quickly got a large following. The inspiration to focus on cute animals came along in 2018 after he saw people selling Chinese calligraphy (书法) on Douyin. “The black and white seemed a bit boring to me,” Zhang said. “I remembered the cartoon books I read as a child. Suddenly, pictures of cute animals came into my mind.”
Once, he was trying to draw a Chinese story about Wu Song fighting a tiger. Then an idea hit him: Why not draw five squirrels (松鼠), which could then be called “wu song (五松)”?
Since then, he has begun to add homophonic elements to his wordplay. Zhang tries to show the dreams of everyday people with encouraging themes in his paintings.
“For example, when I considered drawing a great hawk (鹰) spreading its wings, I thought, ‘Why can’t it be a little chicken spreading its wings instead’?”
Now, Zhang also creates all kinds of cultural products with his artwork, including T-shirts and pillows (枕头). He hopes that his style and intellectual property (知识产权) will go abroad one day.

When a holiday or special time is around the corner, Zhang often shares paintings and videos about it. For example, before the start of a new semester, he might post artwork about “back-to-school blues” as experienced by animals. This shows their imagined sadness about having to return to school.
Making different characters
In Zhang’s paintings, each animal character has its own personality. For example, the horse wishes to be free, while the cow is stubborn (顽固的).

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs (恐龙) controlled (控制) the earth. And there were different kinds of dinosaurs on the earth. Some of them were no bigger than chickens, while some were about 90 feet long. But all of them had very small brains (大脑). Later on, there weren’t any dinosaurs. What happened to them?
In the days of dinosaurs, the whole earth was warm and wet. There were many green forests. But the earth changed slowly all the time. When parts of the earth became freezing and dry, the forests there died. Then dinosaurs could not find enough food to eat. This must be one reason why dinosaurs died out.
There were also terrible fights between dinosaurs. Though there was no man to see any of the fights, the animal’s footprints could tell us that the fights did happen.
What’s another reason? We can make a guess. New kinds of animals might come to the earth. Some of them had big brains and were fast and strong. They could kill dinosaurs. Some ate dinosaur eggs, too.
There may be other reasons that we do not know about. Each year people will find some dinosaur footprints and bones. Scientists are trying to tell us more about dinosaurs.

Some fish weigh more than a fridge. Some fish look like cows. Now, getting to know these very special creatures is becoming easier. On a new website (www.eol.org), called the Encyclopaedia of Life (EOL), you will find basic facts on about 30,000 species-or kinds-of fish.
But as surprising as 30,000 fish sounds, it’s just a baby step for the website. Its designers dream of making it the largest biological (生物学的) encyclopaedia ever, with a web page for every living specie.
Although there are already a lot of websites about living things, and a lot of encyclopaedias too, they’re not the best tools for scientists, say the encyclopaedia’s designers. Scientists need websites with information that has been double-checked by other scientists. A dream site would include links to all the basic research and also automatically (自动的) update itself as new research is published. Finally, even people who aren’t scientists should be able to use such a site to get to know what’s living in their backyards-or anywhere else in the world.
Think of it as one huge book that can keep growing in size—to millions of pages. If those pages were made of paper, the book would become large and heavy and hard to update. However, because it’s used online. Anyone who has a computer can search its pages easily. Moreover, those new pages can be added quickly.
36.What’s The Encyclopeadia of Life?
A.An organization studying special species.
B.A website where people can find information of 30,000 fish.
C.A meeting where people discuss the research of the living things.
D.A large, heavy book which is a record of living things.

A.An important project. B.A difficult problem.
C.A new beginning. D.A tiny success.
38.What can be inferred (推测) from today’s websites and encyclopacdias about living things?
A.They are not the best tools for scientists. B.They provide wrong information.
C.They seldom update the information. D.They are easy to search for information.
39.What’s the aim (目标) of the EOL designers?
A.To make the encyclopaedia popular.
B.To provide description of every species.
C.To give correct information to the scientists.
D.To challenge the other websites and encyclopaedias.
40.Which one is the best title of this passage?

Playing with words

Following timely topics

37.What is “a baby step” in paragraph 2?
A.A “Book” of life. B.A dream website.
C.An automatic encyclopaedia. D.A surprising tool.

第一节 阅读理解 (共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)
A
Playing with words

The secrets behind Zhang’s likable style
Following timely topics

37.What is “a baby step” in paragraph 2?
A.A “Book” of life. B.A dream website.
C.An automatic encyclopaedia. D.A surprising tool.
