Even if you’re very angry, never hurt anyone in your family. That could only make things get worse. If your brother or sister hurts you, it’s important to tell your parents. There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
According to the WHO, over half people in the world may be sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep- deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back.
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea and it is held by people with no imagination. You will be able to do more.”
9. The best way to keep healthy is ________ according to the passage.
A. to have more sleep B. to do more exercise
C. to get more medical help D. to eat more healthy food
10. In the writer’s opinion, less sleep may cause ________ more likely.
①tiredness ②traffic accidents ③foolishness ④medial problems
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④

A. Time. B. Money. C. Credit card. D. Work.

One day, on my way back home, half an apple flew towards me. It just landed in front of my feet. Surprised, I felt I was so lucky that it didn’t hit me.
I live beside a school. There is a wall between my neighborhood and the school. I guessed it was a student who threw the apple over the wall. Thinking it was a small accident, I didn’t care about it anymore and just kept going. Then I forgot it.
A week later, when I passed by the same place, a bad apple came again. This time, it landed on the roof next to the wall. I thought to myself, “Is it my destiny (命运) to get hit by an apple?”
Yesterday, when I was walking back home, my mind got lost in a new movie. But suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by another apple. And it was big and flew so fast.
I couldn’t stand it anymore. Someone could get hurt because of these apples. Didn’t the students know that people often walked outside the wall in the day? Or didn’t they care at all? I got really angry and told my friends about it.
“You should throw the apple back over the wall. That will teach them a lesson,” One of them suggested. But I didn’t want to play that “game”. As they say, an eve for an eve leaves the whole world blind. Besides, I might end up bringing trouble to others.
I’ve decided to call the school and let the students learn from their mistakes. Their impolite actions may hurt others if they keep throwing their waste. What’s more, waste belongs to the rubbish bin, not anywhere else.

WONDER—Giving a helping hand
I recently finished reading the book Wonder written by the US writer R. J. Palacio. This book tells the story of Augusta Pullman, a 10-year-old boy with facial difference, and his journey through school.

As their children, learning to care for our parents is what we should do. Firstly, we can do sports with them to help them keep healthy and do housework as much as possible at home. Secondly, we should tell them to eat healthy food and not to stay up late so that they can get enough sleep. Last but not least, we should share our school life with them and get closer to them.
All in all, we should care for our parents and love them as they love us.

When you’re sad or angry, keep calm and then try thinking of a way to solve the problem. You could go out to run around or play a ball, or just find a quiet place and relax. When you’re really calm, talk with the person you argued with. Then maybe you’ll feel much better.
Even if you’re very angry, never hurt anyone in your family. That could only make things get worse. If your brother or sister hurts you, it’s important to tell your parents. It’s also important to tell an adult if your parent hurts you. You could have a family meeting to talk about it when the fight happens.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
11 What does “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Time. B. Money. C. Credit card. D. Work.
12. The purpose of the writing is to ________.
A. help people learn about the facts of sleep B. teach people how to sleep well
C. make people interested in sleep D. tell people the importance of sleep

13. What did the author think when he saw a flying apple for the first time?

A. The author was hit by the flying apple once.
B. One of his friends suggested he should call the police.
C. The students’ actions are not only impolite but may hurt others.
D. The author described his four experiences of seeing flying apples.
15. Which of the following can be an example of “an eye for an eye” in Paragraph 6?
A. The boy next to me hit me on the nose and I hit him on his back angrily.
B. On the bus, Sam saw two boys fighting and walked away without a word.
C. Jim borrowed 50 dollars from Tony and gave them back to him as promised.
D. I helped the new neighbor send his sick son to the hospital and he said thanks.
16. What’s the correct order according to the text?

WONDER—Giving a helping hand
I recently finished reading the book Wonder written by the US writer R. J. Palacio. This book tells the story of Augusta Pullman, a 10-year-old boy with facial difference, and his journey through school.
The book teaches us to be kind to others. It really touched my heart. Students often bully (欺负) Pullman for not looking normal. But his classmates Jack and Summer don’t care about how he looks. They become his real friends and like him for who he is.
It also teaches us that bullying others is wrong and we should always stand up against it. When Pullman is bullied, his friends help him and show that they care. It shows that a small act of kindness can mean a lot to someone who is going through a hard time.
Wonder is a must-read book for everyone. It is a story that will make you laugh, cry and think. It has encouraged me to be nicer and see the good in everyone, no matter how they look or where they come from.
