An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.
Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. On a recent day, Mr.Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr.Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr.Kloehn also visits SweetPea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.
In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun.
Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.
Mr.Kloehn says his work is not a social project. He says he is just someone using his skills to help his homeless neighbors.
24. The following are the advantages of the small shelters EXCEPT ________.
A. saving power and energy
B. protecting possessions of the homeless
C. decorating the streets where they are
D. keeping the homeless safe and comfortable
25. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. Greg Kloehn has sold at least 20 tiny houses
B. an act of kindness has made people simple and grateful
C. the shelters are immovable
D. the government has got involved in the action
26. The passage is likely taken from ________.
A. an official report
B. an art review
C. a science magazine
D. a news report
27. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. An artist creates homes for the homeless.
B. A more comfortable shelter on the streets.
C. A successful social project in Oakland.
D. An artist makes a living by designing small shelters.
C 25. B 26. D 27. A
根据倒第三段最后一句“The device is powered by the sun.(这个装置是由太阳供电的)”可知,这种小房子很省电,所以选项A是它的优势,排除选项A;根据第二段最后一句“She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.(她说,这能保证她的安全,保护她的财产)”可知,这种小房子可以保护无家可归者的财产,所以选项B是它的优势,排除选项B;根据第一段第一句和第二句“Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather.(Greg Kloehn建造了非常小的庇护所,让街道上的生活更加舒适。这些建筑为无家可归者提供了一些安全保障,并保护他们免受恶劣天气的影响)”可知,这种小房子确保无家可归者的安全和舒适,所以选项D是它的优势,排除选项D;文中没有提到这种小房子可以起到装饰作用,所以选项C不是它的优势,故选A。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒第二段最后一句“But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man. (但一些人说,他们已经学会用更少的钱生活,他们对那个人心存感激)”可知,一个善举让人们变得简单和感恩。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段第一句“An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. (加利福尼亚州奥克兰市的一位艺术家正在用他的技能帮助无家可归的人)”可知,文章第一句就概括了全文,表明文章要讲的事情,所以这是新闻报道中的导语。根据最后一段“Mr.Kloehn says his work is not a social project. He says he is just someone using his skills to help his homeless neighbors. (克勒恩先生说,他的工作不是一个社会项目。他说,他只是一个用自己的技能帮助无家可归的邻居的人)”可知,这是转述受采访的人说的话。由此推知,这是一篇新闻报道。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段第一句和第二句“An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. (加利福尼亚州奥克兰市的一位艺术家正在用他的技能帮助无家可归的人。Greg Kloehn建造了非常小的庇护所,让街道上的生活更加舒适)”可知,文章主要是讲一位艺术家为无家可归的人建造家园。故选A。

We live in a world of plastic. Shopping bags, drink bottles, your toothbrush and even your clothes are among the everyday items made from plastic. But plastic isn’t fantastic, and neither is the current state of our environment.
Humans have been producing plastic on a large scale since 1950. We produce hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic every year and production is only increasing. Unfortunately, most of it is used only once and then thrown away. Only a small part of plastic is recycled. The majority ends up in our oceans.
A Plastic Ocean is a documentary film directed by the Australian journalist Craig Leeson. It dives into and investigates the terrible influence that plastic has caused to our environment, especially our ocean life. What starts off as an adventure to film the blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, leads to the shocking discovery of a thick layer of plastic floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The film sends the message that our actions and choices can severely impact the planet.
Plastic is so widely used because it is durable and cheap. Unfortunately, this durability is the same quality that makes it so detrimental to the environment. Most plastics do not break down chemically. Instead, they break into smaller and smaller pieces that can persist in the environment for an extensive period of time.
Because it is so affordable, developing countries use plastics extensively and much of the rubbish is washed into the ocean when it rains.
When smaller pieces of plastic are eaten by animals in the sea, toxins (毒素) are released and become stored in their tissue. These toxins accumulate up the food chain and can eventually end up on our dinner tables. The consumption of the polluted seafood can cause many health problems including cancer, immune system problems, and even childhood developmental issues.
根据第二段“Humans have been producing plastic on a large scale since 1950. (自1950年以来,人类一直在大规模生产塑料。)”可知,人类自1950年以来就开始大规模生产塑料。因此,我们广泛使用塑料已有70多年。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“A Plastic Ocean is a documentary film directed by the Australian journalist Craig Leeson. It dives into and investigates the terrible influence that plastic has caused to our environment, especially our ocean life. (《塑料海洋》是一部由澳大利亚记者Craig Leeson执导的纪录片。它深入调查了塑料对我们环境,尤其是海洋生物造成的可怕影响。)”可知,Craig Leeson执导《塑料海洋》这部纪录片是为了展示塑料对环境的危害。故选B项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后的“Most plastics do not break down chemically. Instead, they break into smaller and smaller pieces that can persist in the environment for an extensive period of time. (大多数塑料不会发生化学分解。相反,它们会分解成越来越小的碎片,这些碎片可以在环境中长期存在。)”可知,塑料不会分解,而是会分解成更小的碎片,长期存在于环境中,这对环境是有害的。因此,划线词“detrimental”意为“有害的”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段 “When smaller pieces of plastic are eaten by animals in the sea, toxins (毒素) are released and become stored in their tissue. These toxins accumulate up the food chain and can eventually end up on our dinner tables. The consumption of the polluted seafood can cause many health problems including cancer, immune system problems, and even childhood developmental issues. Society’s huge appetite for plastic is literally poisoning us. (当海洋中的动物吃掉较小的塑料碎片时,毒素会被释放出来并储存在它们的组织中。这些毒素会在食物链中积累,最终可能出现在我们的餐桌上。食用受污染的海鲜会导致许多健康问题,包括癌症、免疫系统问题,甚至儿童发育问题。社会对塑料的巨大需求实际上正在毒害我们。)”可知,最后一段主要讲述了塑料污染如何通过食物链最终影响到人类健康,即“恶有恶报”或“因果循环”的道理。因此,D项“What goes around comes around. (善有善报,恶有恶报;因果循环。)”最能表达最后一段的主旨。故选D项。
D
Does Fame Drive You Crazy?
Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi(狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids(小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature!
According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people—worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villarreal says, “they feel separated and alone.”
The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his soldout readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain(抱怨) about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about filmstars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.
Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever.
If fame is so troublesome, why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.
Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
32. It can be learned from the passage that stars today ________.
A. are often misunderstood by the public
B. can no longer have their privacy protected
C. spend too much on their public appearance
D. care little about how they have come into fame
33. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Great heroes of the past were generally admired.
B. The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.
C. Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.
D. Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers.
34. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?
A. Availability of modern media.
B. Inadequate social recognition.
C. Lack of favorable chances.
D. Huge population of fans.
35. What is the author's attitude toward modern celebrity?
A. Sincere. B. Sceptical.
C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.
B 33. B 34. A 35. D

So when we hear the ocean is in trouble from the effects of overfishing, climate change, and pollution, it’s easy to feel powerless.(每一种生物都依赖海洋。因此,当我们听到海洋因过度捕捞、气候变化和污染而陷入困境时,我们很容易感到无能为力)”以及后文“But there are plenty of action s you can take that will make a big difference for the ocean.(但你可以采取很多行动,这将对海洋产生重大影响)”可知,前文讲述面对海洋问题,我们很容易感到无能为力,后文讲述我们可以采取行动,所以E项“Many of these issues will require leadership from governments and businesses.(其中许多问题都需要政府和企业的领导)”承接上文,和下文构成转折关系,符合文意。故选E项。
分析设空,为本段小标题,根据后文“The more you learn about the ocean, the better prepared you’ll be to inspire change-and help others do the same. Thankfully, there are many ways to educate yourself about the ocean and the challenges it faces, from books and documentaries to websites, museums, art exhibits, and more.(你对海洋了解得越多,你就能更好地激发变革——并帮助其他人也这样做。值得庆幸的是,有很多方法可以让你了解海洋及其面临的挑战,从书籍、纪录片到网站、博物馆、艺术展览等等)”可知,本段主要讲述了要提高自己对海洋的认识,所以A项“Increase your ocean IQ.(提高你的海洋认知)”符合本段主题,为本段小标题。故选A项。

根据前文“Consider booking your next trip through a responsible travel company that’s committed to protecting wildlife and using guides who are aware of rules and best practices. Once you arrive at your destination, be respectful of marine life and habitats. And be careful about your purchases.(考虑通过一家负责任的旅游公司预订你的下一次旅行,该公司致力于保护野生动物,并使用了解规则和最佳实践的导游。一旦你到达目的地,尊重海洋生物和栖息地。买东西时要小心)”可知,本段主要讲述旅游时注意保护海洋生态,购买东西时要小心,所以G项“Purchasing items like shark products damages delicate ecosystems and threatens endangered species.(购买鲨鱼制品会破坏脆弱的生态系统,威胁到濒危物种)”符合本段主题,是对前文的举例。故选G项。

After college graduation, I became an editor of our city evening paper and was promoted to the deputy (副的) editor of the paper five years later.
One day, as I parked my car and walked towards the office, I noticed two boys who appeared to be around eight years old, selling popcorn on the street corner. Curious, I approached them and requested half a kilogram of popcorn. They prepared it for me within five minutes.
“How much is it?” I asked.
“It’s 30 rupees, sir,” they replied.
I then asked their names, and they answered, “Sahib, Asib.”
I asked Sahib why they weren’t in school and were selling popcorn instead. Sahib explained that they were doing it to earn money for their schooling. However, Asib quickly interjected (插话), saying they had no money left after covering food and medicine, not to mention schooling fees.
“Medicine for what? You guys are looking well,” I said.
Asib replied, “Our mother has a kidney (肾) disease, so we need money to purchase medicine for her treatment.”
When I asked about their father, Sahib sadly shared that he had passed away from cancer four years before, leaving their mother to support them with two jobs. I was deeply moved and struggled to find words. Before leaving, I asked whether they would be there the next day, intending to buy some then. They assured me they would come.
“Take care, boys,” I said as I left.
The next day, I returned to the spot where I had met Sahib and Asib the day before, but they were not selling popcorn as usual, standing there with a single bag of popcorn. I asked why and they explained that they had been waiting for me but had to leave because their mother’s health had got worse.
I could see in their eyes that their hearts broke because of sadness, so I decided to do something to help the two honest and dutiful kids.

Paragraph 1
I told them that they were too young to bear the heavy burden alone. With these words, I took out 2,000 rupees and handed the money to them. They were too shocked to say a word. I told them I would try my best to help them go back to school and help their mother cure her disease. Hearing these words, the boys were so touched that tears poured out of their eyes. They cried, “Thank you very much …” Having a sudden idea, I left them immediately and returned to my office.
Paragraph 2
At my office, I penned down this touching story and made the decision to share it with the public. I appealed to fellow citizens to extend their support, emphasizing that with everyone’s contribution of a little love, the kids would not fear to lose their mother or face homelessness. They shouldn’t shoulder so much burden at such an early age and great efforts should be made to help them go back to school. The response to my appeal was overwhelming. With the collective efforts of the community, the mother’s condition got better and better, and the children also saw their beloved teachers and classmates again. It was the joint love that turned a story of hardship into a story of hope.

The device is powered by the sun.
Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.

Society’s huge appetite for plastic is literally poisoning us.
28. How long have we used plastic extensively?
A. More than 40 years. B. More than 50 years.
C. More than 60 years. D. More than 70 years.
29. Why did Craig Leeson direct A Plastic Ocean?
A. To introduce the ocean life. B. To show the harm of plastic.
C. To describe the beauty of the ocean. D. To indicate the common use of plastic.
30. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Similar. B. Difficult. C. harmful. D. Important.
31. Which proverb can best express the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. You get what you pay for. B. There is no smoke without fire.
C. Everything happens for a reason. D. What goes around comes around.
