A girl jumped into the ocean from the boat. At 12, Andrea Marshall was already good at diving. She enjoys the moments with every living thing in the sea and the world they own.
“That tiny little biologist inside of me wanted to talk with each and every one of them,” Andrea said. Now, Andrea has realized her childhood dream of becoming a marine (海洋的) biologist. After studying in her homeland the United States and then Australia, she moved to Mozambique, where she has become a leading voice in the protection of our oceans.
Early on, Andrea’s research focused on mantas (蝠鲼科类鱼). Mantas have the largest brain of any fish, relative to body size, and those bodies can be more than 25 feet across. They are harmless to humans and often invite divers to play with them. Her work has included identifying new manta species and creating genetic (基因的) libraries of these giant animals.
Overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change have caused the populations of mantas and countless other marine species to fall quickly. But mantas are also specifically targeted for use in medicine. In 2019, Andrea led the scientific assessment that updated the giant manta’ s status to be endangered on the IUCN Red List. The work reflected both her professional knowledge on these giants and her rising status in the field of marine protection.
Andrea and like-minded shark expert Simon Pierce co-founded the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) in Mozambique. The organization has grown into an international charity and research network to protect ocean habitats worldwide. Its heart remains in Mozambique, which is globally recognized for its great variety of sea animals, particularly larger species such as sharks, whales and turtles.
4. What do we know about Andrea Marshall?
A. She has a strong love for the ocean. B. She was born and raised in Australia.
C. She dreams of becoming a professional diver. D. She moved to Mozambique to receive education.
5. What can be learnt about manta s from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A. They have unfriendly behaviors to divers. B. They are mainly threatened by lack of food.
C. They have the largest brain of all sea creatures. D. They are caught mainly for their medical value.
6. Why does the MMF focus on Mozambique?
A. Its serious situation. B. Its research network.
C. Its diverse sea animals. D. Its international charity.
7. What may be the impact of Andrea’s work?
A. All marine fishing will be banned. B. New species of mantas will be created.
C. More people will care about ocean protection. D. Larger marine species benefit more from her work.
C
Laughter, in response to funny events, actually takes a lot of work, because it activates many areas of the brain: areas that control motor, emotional, cognitive and social processing. Researchers now appreciate laughter’s power to improve physical and mental well-being (健康).
People begin laughing when they are babies, which helps develop muscles and upper body strength. Laughter is not just breathing. It relies on complex combinations of facial muscles, often involving movement of the eyes, head and shoulders. By activating the neural (神经的) pathways of emotions like joy, laughter can improve your mood and make your physical response to stress less intense.
A good sense of humor and the laughter that follows depend on an abundant measure of social intelligence and working memory resources. Laughter, like humor, typically comes from recognizing the oddness of a situation. You need to mentally resolve the surprising behavior or event—otherwise you won’t laugh; you might just be confused instead. Inferring the intentions of others and taking their perspective can increase the intensity of the laughter and amusement you feel. To “get” a joke or humorous situation, you need to be able to see the lighter side of things. You must believe that other possibilities besides the literal meaning exist.
Laughter creates bonds with others. Linguist Don Nilsen points out that laughs seldom happen when alone, supporting their strong social role. For example, public speakers and comedians try to get a laugh to make audiences feel psychologically closer to them. By practicing a little laughter each day, you can improve social skills that may not come naturally to you. When you laugh in response to humor, you share your feelings with others and learn from the risks that your response will be accepted by others and not be rejected.
Laughter also produces positive emotions. These feelings—like amusement, happiness and joy—build resiliency (复原力) and increase creative thinking. They increase subjective well-being and life satisfaction. Researchers find that these positive emotions experienced with humor and laughter are related to appreciating the meaning of life.
8. How does laughter help improve our well-being?
A. It helps with breathing. B. It activates various brain areas.
C. It affects facial muscles. D. It improves physical strength.
9. What is necessary for experiencing laughter according to Paragraph 3?
A. Having a high level of intelligence. B. Maintaining a general outlook on life.
C. Discovering the strangeness of a situation. D. Understanding the literal meaning of a joke.
10. Why do speakers and comedians aim to make listeners laugh?
A. To show their wisdom of life. B. To demonstrate their presentation style.
C. To make the presentation more challenging. D. To create psychological closeness with listeners.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To stress the positive effects of laughter. B. To provide a general definition of laughter.
C. To highlight the social importance of laughter. D. To instruct readers on how to practice laughter.
D
Researchers have set a new record for data transmission. Using one small computer chip, they could move 1. 84 petabits of data per second. That equals 122 million Netflix movies streaming at the same time.
The Danish team reported this new achievement in Nature Photonics on October 20th,2022. These researchers took advantage of a special phenomenon of light called optical frequency comb (光学频率梳). To make one, you take a laser and shine it through a special passage. Out pops a carefully-crafted rainbow, with all of its colors spaced out evenly.
When a laser (激光) shines through a device called a modulator (调制器), the modulator transforms packets of data from their digital form into patterns of light. Then it controls the laser’s light to create these patterns. One pattern might involve turning on and off rapidly. The patterns then zip along fiber optic cables (光纤电缆) at the speed of light. At the other end, a receiver changes them back into digital data.
Most fiber optic cables have just one core-a single pipe through which that light can travel. To send much data at once, you have to fit multiple rays of light into that one pipe. To travel together without messing up each other’s data, the light rays must have unique wavelengths. Now, a single laser shining into a special type of chip would split into many different wavelengths. This happens because the light travels around a tiny ring made of a special material. The ring the Danish team used created 223 different wavelengths-or a rainbow of 223 colors!
The Danish group also used a new type of fiber optic cable that contains 37 separate pipes. Each can carry the same wavelengths as the others without interference (干扰). So the team started with 223 different colors, and then split each color 37 ways. The grand total was 8,251 different rays of light. Each ray got sent through a modulator that controlled the light to carry data.
Such a high rate may be useful in data centers even sooner because of the “energy and cost savings” it promises, says Bill Corcoran, a physicist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The new technology uses fewer lasers than current methods, which makes it more energy-efficient. And that could help lessen the Internet’s climate impact.
12. What can we learn about optical frequency comb in Paragraph 2?
A. It is the principle of digital communication. B. It is the base of the data-moving technology.
C. It gave the researchers inspiration for the chip. D. It reminded the researchers of the use of lasers.
13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How digital data is carried. B. How a modulator is created.
C. How fiber optic cables work. D. How a laser controls light.
14. What is a must for data to travel along a light cable without interference?
A. A long enough fiber optic cable. B. Different lasers shining in cables.
C. Light rays with different wavelengths. D. Sufficient tiny rings made of a special material.
15. Why can the new technology be used before long?
A. It uses fewer modulators. B. It is cheaper to maintain.
C. It promises larger future profits. D. It is more environmental-friendly.

He was there every morning, sitting still on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so far away and sad. In the morning light, I could see the shadows carved deep within the lines surrounding his eyes.
Each morning, I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. As newcomers, we didn’t know many neighbors. One beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter burst out and greeted him with a cheerful “Hi, Mr. Man!” As she was an outgoing child, I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. However, her cheerfulness faded when he didn’t respond. My daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say “Hi” to her. Hesitating for words because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he’s having a tough day.”
Back home, I did the breakfast dishes and thought about “Mr. Man.” Why was he sad? I wanted to do something to cheer him up. I thought of a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbors cutting her front lawn. After I introduced myself, she invited me to sit and chat on her front porch (门廊) for a while. I learned Teresa was a long-time resident of the neighborhood. She knew everybody and everything. As we drank hot coffee, she talked about almost every neighbor in the community. Teresa was very friendly and cheerful, but when I asked her about the man up the block, she got really serious. “Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.” She went on to tell me that Bob and his wife never had children, and she wasn’t sure if he had any relatives.
The following week seemed to pass by quickly. I talked to my daughter about what we could do to make Mr. Man smile. “Should we bring him cookies or make him a card?” I suggested.

As summer approaches, I’m thrilled to share my plans for a meaningful vacation. Here’s how I’m planning to spend my time.
What I want to do most is to learn a new language. I’ve chosen Spanish, as it’s widely spoken and opens up opportunities for travel and cultural exchange. I’ll be using language learning apps and online resources to get started. Besides, I’ve signed up to volunteer at the “Sunshine Community Center”. This experience is expected to allow me connection with people from diverse backgrounds as well as develop my cooperation skills.
I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and hearing about yours! Wishing everyone a summer filled with joy and discovery.

“No, not that.” She refused, “I have another idea”. After a pause, her little face lit up. “Sunflowers, Mama! Big, happy sunflowers!” she exclaimed. “They look like sunshine!” So that afternoon, we carefully picked the brightest blooms from our garden. My daughter arranged them, tying them into a bunch, attached to which was a card with a vibrant sun and a smiling man. “For Mr. Man to feel sunny,” she explained. The next morning, we approached Bob’s house with the bunch of sunflowers. He took them with his fingers trembling slightly. He nodded and whispered, “Thank you.”
From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greetings each morning. The transformation wasn’t instant, but the morning after we left the sunflowers, he was there again. As we passed, my daughter chirped, “Hi, Mr. Man!” This time, he slowly lifted his head. His bright blue eyes, though still shadowed, met hers. A sparkle of gratitude flashed across his face. Then, incredibly, he replied, “Morning.” That single word filled my daughter with joy. One morning, I noticed the slightly wilted sunflowers still standing proudly in a jar by his door — a silent testament to a small kindness.
