Peking Opera used to sound strange to Dou Yi. The 14-year-old Beijinger said whenever
she found Peking Opera on TV, she watched another program. Like most of today’s teenagers,
she preferred pop music and changed TV channels(频道 ) when operas played, thinking they
were for older people.
This changed when her school introduced Peking Opera classes. Every week, a teacher
taught students famous operas and the four main roles: sheng(male), dan(female), jing
(colorful-faced male), and chou(comic roles). They learned basic movements like waving
sleeves(衣袖) and special steps.
“At first, the singing was too high and rhythms(节奏) were tricky. We laughed trying to
copy it,” Dou said. But with practice, the music became meaningful. They discovered operas tell
stories—some about heroes, others about poems.
Many Chinese schools teach Peking Opera to share traditions. Dou’s school organizes
performances where students act out scenes. “I didn’t know operas included history,” she said.
“One even has a Tang Dynasty poem! It’s like fun history lessons.”
Now, Dou and her classmates enjoy Peking Opera. They discuss it during breaks and sing
parts together. “I used to think traditions were old-fashioned, but they’re part of us,” she
explained. “If we keep learning, this art won’t fade. It’s our treasure!”
Through school, Dou found beauty in Peking Opera. She hopes more teens will try it.
“Understanding our culture makes us proud of who we are, ” she smiled.

Are there any environmental problems in your city? What causes them? Are there
ways to stop them?
One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South
Africa. He noticed a haze(薄雾 ) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to
realize that it was a huge cloud of air pollution.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt it necessary to do something about it, but didn’t know
what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science. He first did
research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk.
He decided to work on it in a cooperative(合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials,
and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as
an idea to improve it.
Through years of work, Chiwewe and his co-workers from South Africa and China
created an online air quality decision support system. Based on historical and real-time data,
the system can predict air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better
decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their
operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson -- a lesson we all need to take into heart if we
are to work towards a better future. “Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your
outside expertise(专业知识 ) may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he
said.
What if Chiwewe hadn’t researched the problem and do something about it? What if
he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter?
As Chiwewe said, “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you
can, in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”
9.Tapiwa Chiwewe worked in________.
A.China B.America C.South Africa D.Japan
10.What was Tapiwa Chiwewe’s job?
A.He was a teacher. B.He was a computer engineer.
C.He was a doctor. D.He was a scientist.
11.Chiwewe found that________ is the world’s biggest environmental health risk.
A.water pollution B.land pollution C.air pollution D.light pollution
12.What can we know from the passage?
A.Chiwewe is a person with a sense of social responsibility.
B.Chiwewe knew more about environmental science.
C.Chiwewe worked on air pollution by himself.
D.The system can reduce air pollution.

Do you like to keep an eye out for discount stickers(折扣标签) on food that is close to its
sell-by date? Well those stickers might soon be a thing of the past, as supermarkets may start
using AI to watch when prices need to be reduced.
Some supermarkets in Europe are already using this pricing system, and have either digital
price tags on the shelves, or high-tech stickers on the products themselves.
The AI system checks if a product is about to expire(到期) on the shelf before it gets sold
and then decides whether to reduce its price or not. If there is a lot of product left, its price might
be greatly reduced. But if this time of year has been a period of high sales for this product and
it’s likely to sell well now, there might be no reduction.
Wasteless, an Israeli business organization, is providing this AI system to many
supermarkets in Europe. It says the system can cut down the food waste in stores by a third. “The
system not only stops food from expiring on the shelves, but also lets supermarkets know what
products are not welcome,” the company said.
But while dynamic(动态的) pricing might mean less food waste, it also makes it difficult
for customers to understand how much the products cost in the beginning. And uncertain prices
wouldn’t be friendly to people who don’t have a lot of money to spend. It could even make
certain products more expensive in certain areas than in others, if they are in great need.
13.How does the AI decide to cut prices on food?
A.By knowing how popular the food is online.
B.By filling the shelves with lots of expired food.
C.By asking customers about their shopping experiences.
D.By checking if food is expiring soon or has too much left.
14.What does Wasteless claim about their AI system?
A.It raises product prices during busy seasons.
B.It forces supermarkets to use digital price tags.
C.It makes discounts available to all customers.
D.It helps supermarkets cut food waste by a third.
15. What does the writer think about dynamic pricing for customers?
A.It makes prices clear. B.It helps to waste more food.
C.It makes prices hard to predict. D.It helps people with less money.
16.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Smart Pricing with AI B.AI and More Food Waste
C.Price Tags in Supermarkets D.Problems with Changing Prices

Water, a common liquid(液体), plays a very important part in Chinese tradition. It’s not
only for drinking and growing plants but also has deep meanings in our philosophy(哲学)
and art. Let’s look at three ways that water is special in Chinese culture.
◆ _____17_____
In Chinese culture, water is seen as the start of all life. In farming, water is needed to

water plays a key role. Rivers move from mountains to the sea, and rain falls to help the
land. This never-ending movement teaches us about balance and harmony in nature.
◆Water teaches us how to think and behave.
In Chinese philosophy, water means something special. 18 The philosopher
Laozi said, “The best kind of goodness is like water.” Water also shows us how to be
persistent (坚持不懈的). Even though it seems weak, water can break hard rocks over time.
◆ Water serves as an art medium.
Water is a popular theme in Chinese art. In poems, water often stands for feelings like
love or sadness. 19 They use mo(Chinese ink) and water to show the beauty of
mountains and rivers.
20 It is a symbol of life, philosophy, and art in Chinese culture. By
understanding the meaning of water, we can better know the wisdom and beauty of
traditional Chinese culture.
A.Water teaches us how to be kind.
B.Water shows the power of life and nature.
C.Water also brings harm if people do not take good care of rivers or lakes.
D.In traditional paintings, artists use water to make soft and flowing lines.

Math isn’t just numbers in textbooks. It’s all around us, making our world more beautiful
and convenient.
Math in Poems
In Chinese poems, the numbers give us the freedom to imagine. As Li Bai wrote, “I’ve
sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day”, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far
away”, “The waterfall rushes down three thousand feet from high”—these numbers show what
Li Bai saw and how he felt. When we read the lines, there are pictures in mind.
Math in Paintings
Art and math might seem different, but together they create wonderful works! Some studies
show that when Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, he followed a special math rule called
the “golden ratio”(黄金比例). The ratio was hidden in different parts of the painting, like the size
of the canvas(画布), the face of the lady and the background behind her. This makes the painting
beautiful and impressive(印象深刻的).
Math in Traffic
How do traffic lights “know” when to change? Traffic engineers use traffic flow models(交
通流量模型), a kind of math model, to help cars move smoothly. They collect plenty of data like
how many cars pass by, when people cross the street, busy times of day and special events in the
city. With these models, engineers can do lots of math and run many tests to study how the traffic
moves better. This allows them to find the best timing for each traffic light. It makes our city
green, smart and livable!
Math makes our lives better and helps us understand the world in many surprising ways!
41. What does the numbers give us in Chinese poems?

42. According to the text, where was the “golden ratio” hidden?

43. What kind of data can the traffic engineers collect? List 2 examples.
