His goal was to follow the historic route of the Pony Express. Grant records his 142-day adventure in The Last Ride of the Pony Express, describing his travel in the company of his two horses, Badger and Chicken Fry. Elixir After a decade of living in the Scottish Highlands, native Bulgarian Kapka Kassabova returned to her roots in southwestern Bulgaria’s remote Mesta valley, a rural region known for its wild crops and their vast medicinal properties. Over several seasons, the poet and writer travelled to study the deep relationship between the area’s people and plants, as well as with the land itself. The Life Cycle British writer and cyclist Kate Rawles has a liking for raising awareness about environmental challenges through her own adventures. Her 8,288-mile, 13-month journey across the length of the Andes Mountains on a self-built bamboo bicycle is the basis for her new book, The Life Cycle. Driving the Green Book From 1936 to 1967, the Green Book served as an annual travel guide for African Americans. Award-winning broadcaster Alvin Hall first learned about the Green Book in 2015, and he was immediately attracted. Several years later, he set out on a 2,000-plus-mile cross-country road trip from New York to New Orleans. The result, Driving the Green Book, is a 288-page journey along America’s open roads, exploring the country’s racial past and detailing the Green Book’s life-saving history. 1. Which book focuses on the exploration of Bulgaria’s Mesta Valley? A. Elixir. B. The Life Cycle. C. Driving the Green Book. D. The Last Ride of the Pony Express. 2. Who intends to show America’s racial past? A. Kate Rawles. B. Will Grant. C. Alvin Hall. D. Kapka Kassabova. 3. What do the four books have in common? A. Their authors are journalists. B. They are related to travel. C. Their target readers are tour guides. D. They show the significance of history. B Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. My son has lost his admission to a good school. We have moved from a big house to a smaller one to reduce our living expenses. My wife has a lot of extra stress. On top of that, her father died a week ago, which has added fuel to the fire, putting our family in a worse situation. And now I have had an accident, too! In these conditions, I have two mental choices: either to feel depressed and keep thinking about my problems, losing my peace of mind and affecting my family life; or replace my negative (消极的) thoughts with super mental powers that depend on self-confidence, positivity, and keep applying for new jobs with a positive attitude. I choose the second option because I believe that the pain I am experiencing today will strengthen my character. My strengths will then improve my confidence and make me a successful man one day. I understand that time does not stop and does not remain the same. I understand that good and bad days are part of the package called life. While good times make me happy, bad times strengthen the ‘inner’ me. I believe in the quote which says that God takes men into deep waters not to drown them, but to clean them. I also believe in the four spiritual powers; one of which says that whatever is happening is the best thing that could have happened. After two months, I got a job which is very exciting, full of professional exposure and offers a nice salary. Time has healed my wife’s mental stress due to the death of her father, although such a loss is irreplaceable. My son and daughter have got admission to a good school. 4. What does the first paragraph suggest? A. The family used to have a small house. B. The author is in a good situation. C. The family is in a terrible situation. D. The family is threatened by others. 5. What does the underlined word “accident” in the first paragraph refer to? A. The author has had a car accident. B. The author has difficulty in the mental choices. C. The author is under a lot of pressure of work. D The author’s house is on fire. 6. Why does the author choose to be positive about life’s challenges? A. He believes it will make him less stressed. B. He thinks that will make him more powerful, confident and closer to success. C. He wants to overcome all the challenges in his life. D. He hopes to experience real life. 7. What happened to the author after two months? A. His son and daughter dropped out of school. B. His wife recovered from her illness. C. He got a lot of help from others. D. He got a satisfactory job and everything got better. C Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to restore (修复) artworks. At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings in the church. Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, noted how difficult the restoration process was. One reason was the glue (胶水) used to attach paintings to walls in the 1960s. It was nearly impossible to remove the glue completely. “My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean frescoes (壁画) in Italy,” Bosch said. Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. That was more than ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church paintings’ restoration. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The money of the $4.46 million project is given by local organizations. The process involves feeding small amounts of the glue — made from animal collagen (胶原) — to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free. Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, restorers of artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that took hours and damaged the paintings. Bosch has also used her bacteria method process in other restoration projects in Italy and Spain. 8. What made Pilar Bosch come up with the idea of restoring artworks with bacteria? A. A paper she had read. B. The inspiration from her mother. C. Her desire to help her mother. D. Her role as a microbiologist. 9. What challenge did Bosch’s mother face in restoring the paintings in the church? A. No financial support. B. Removal of the glue on paintings. C. The lack of traditional cleaning methods. D. Damage to the paintings caused by the weather. 10. What does Paragraph 3 focus on? A. The mother-daughter team’s contribution to the church restoration. B. The materials used for cleaning the paintings. C. The money used for the paintings’ restoration work. D. The working mechanism of the bacteria-based restoration method. 11. How does Bosch’s mother feel about restoring artworks with bacteria? A. It is fairly convenient. B. It is environmental-friendly. C. It is efficient and time-saving. D. It is worthy of wide promotion. D It has been 750 years since the Italy’s famous traveler Marco Polo first entered China. Over two years ago, a woman in her 70s, a follower of Marco Polo, retraced her footsteps along the Silk Road. After more than 850 days, travelling 14 countries across Eurasia, and covering 22,000 kilometers, some have called this Italian traveler, Vienna Cammarota, the “Marco Polo of the New Era”. In 2024, Cammarota arrived in China with The Travels of Marco Polo in hand. On August 29, “Vienna’s Journey to China’s Silk Road” officially kicked off in Kashi, Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Starting from Xinjiang, Cammarota will follow the ancient Silk Road. “I have personally experienced the connection, inheritance, and creation between the ancient Silk Road and the modern Belt and Road Initiative. Through the exchange of culture and goods, people from all over the world are striving to break geographic barriers and create new prosperity, ultimately achieving cultural exchange and mutual (相互的) learning,” Cammarota said. She hopes to measure China’s land with her own feet and share her insights on China with the world. Cammarota carries an old, well-read copy of The Travels of Marco Polo with her and writes down her observations in its blank spaces along the way. During her journey, Cammarota habitually compares her experiences with the details recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo. She mentioned that the book describes vast cotton fields near Kashi. As she walked on the road to the Aksu Prefecture in Xinjiang, it was a harvest season, and endless cotton fields stretched as far as the eye could see, filling her with joy. Cammarota’s journey in China has just begun. 12. What happened to Vienna Cammarota on August 29, 2024? A. She started to cross Eurasia. B. She celebrated her 70th birthday. C. Muttering to myself, I wondered about the rewards and compliments (赞扬). I would receive from my mother when I told the news to her. Just then, I remembered the bookstore near my house. Didn’t my mother give me some money for lunch? I could use it to buy my favourite books! I thought about the books I would have and walked towards the store with a spring in my step. On the way to the store, dark clouds began to gather in the sky and loom over the neighbourhood, swallowing up the sun. As I heard the thunder, my brows furrowed. I gazed at the dark sky, awaiting the arrival of the rainfall. Instinctively, I opened my umbrella to shield myself from the raindrops. After struggling to keep my umbrella from being blown away by the wind, I carried on with my journey to the book store. I picked up my pace, eager to get to there before the rain became any heavier. Just then, I spotted an elderly lady. She had wrinkles on her forehead and her stick-thin arms were filled with countless bags of her groceries. To my shock, she did not have an umbrella! The heavy raindrops beat on her as she slowly made her way home. “Oh no! What if she catches a cold? However, the bookstore will close soon. Should I help her?” I thought. Paragraph 1: At that moment, I knew I had to make the right choice. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally, we arrived at the lady’s house. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 励志高级中学2024—2025学年高一年级下学期期末调研考试 英语试卷 (时间:120分钟 满分:150分) 考生注意 1. How much is the shirt? 根据Elixir部分中“native Bulgarian Kapka Kassabova returned to her roots in southwestern Bulgaria’s remote Mesta valley, a rural region known for its wild crops and their vast medicinal properties. Over several seasons, the poet and writer travelled to study the deep relationship between the area’s people and plants. 故选A项。 根据Driving the Green Book部分中“Alvin Hall first learned about the Green Book in 2015, and he was immediately attracted. Several years later, he set out on a 2,000-plus-mile cross-country road trip from New York to New Orleans. The result, Driving the Green Book, is a 288-page journey along America’s open roads, exploring the country’s racial past (Alvin Hall于2015年首次了解到《绿皮书》,并立刻被其吸引。几年后,他开启了一场从纽约到新奥尔良、里程超2000英里的全国公路之旅。最终成书的《驾驶绿皮书》是一本288页的作品,沿着美国的开阔公路展开旅程,探索这个国家的种族过往。)可知,Alvin Hall通过跨越美国的公路旅行,探索美国的种族历史。因此,意图展现美国种族过往的作者是Alvin Hall。故选C项。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。四本书的内容均与旅行相关:The Last Ride of the Pony Express讲述了记录骑马重走历史路线的旅程;Elixir描述在保加利亚山谷的实地考察;The Life Cycle讲述了基于安第斯山脉的骑行冒险;Driving the Green Book围绕美国公路旅行展开。因此,四本书的共同之处在于“与旅行相关”。故选B项。 B Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. D The family is threatened by others. 5. What does the underlined word “accident” in the first paragraph refer to? A. The author has had a car accident. B. The author has difficulty in the mental choices. C. The author is under a lot of pressure of work. D. The author’s house is on fire. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。本文主要讲述了作者在遇到人生低谷的时候,用一种积极的态度面对它,最后走出低谷的事情。 【4题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. My son has lost his admission to a good school. We have moved from a big house to a smaller one to reduce our living expenses. My wife has a lot of extra stress. On top of that, her father died a week ago, which has added fuel to the fire, putting our family in a worse situation.(失业了,我现在很沮丧。我儿子失去了一所好学校的录取资格。为了减少生活开支,我们从大房子搬到了小房子。我妻子压力太大了。最重要的是,她的父亲一周前去世了,这使我们的家庭雪上加霜。)”可知,第一段中作者提到自己失业,儿子没被好学校录取,为减少生活开支从大房子搬到小房子,妻子压力大,妻子的父亲去世,自己还出了意外。这些都表明这个家庭处于非常糟糕的境地。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第一段内容和第二段“In these conditions, I have two mental choices: either to feel depressed and keep thinking about my problems, losing my peace of mind and affecting my family life; or replace my negative (消极的) thoughts with super mental powers that depend on self-confidence, positivity, and keep applying for new jobs with a positive attitude.(在这种情况下,我有两种心理选择:要么感到沮丧,继续思考我的问题,失去内心的平静,影响我的家庭生活;要么用依靠自信、积极的超能力取代我的消极思想,以积极的态度不断申请新的工作。)”可知,第一段中划线的单词“accident”指的是作者在心理选择上有困难。故选B项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“I choose the second option because I believe that the pain I am experiencing today will strengthen my character. My strengths will then improve my confidence and make me a successful man one day.( 我选择第二个选项,因为我相信我今天所经历的痛苦会增强我的性格。我的长处会增强我的信心,使我有一天成为一个成功的人。)”可推知,作者选择积极面对生活挑战是因为他认为这会让他更强大、更自信,并且更接近成功。故选B项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“After two months, I got a job which is very exciting, full of professional exposure and offers a nice salary. Time has healed my wife’s mental stress due to the death of her father, although such a loss is irreplaceable. My son and daughter have got admission to a good school.( 两个月后,我找到了一份非常令人兴奋的工作,充满了专业知识,薪水也不错。时间治愈了我妻子因父亲去世而带来的精神压力,尽管这种损失是不可替代的。我的儿子和女儿被一所好学校录取了。)”可知,两个月后,作者得到了一份满意的工作,并且家里的情况都变好了。故选D项。 C Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. A No financial support. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. Though eye tiredness typically isn’t harmful, it can cause dry and watery eyes, headache and so on. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to protect your eyes when you use a computer. Sit far enough away from the screen. ____16____. To make sure your computer is positioned right, try the high-five test: if you can properly high-five your computer screen with a full arm extension, the distance is just right. ____17____. If you’re using any books or papers while working, you can tire your eyes when you don’t position them properly. If they’re too low, your eyes will have to refocus every time you glance at them, leading to eye tiredness. Reference materials should be located above the keyboard and below the computer’s monitor. Blink (眨眼) often. We naturally blink about 20 times every minute, but when we focus on a screen, this figure can drop by as much as half. ____18____. Since your eyes won’t blink as frequently as they naturally will, you’ll have to be aware of this and force yourself to blink. Adjust your screen brightness. Your screen should be adjusted depending on your environment. ____19____. If the room is not bright, lower the settings. Take regular breaks. It is recommended that for every two hours of looking at the computer screen, you should take a 15-minute break. ____20____. This is good advice to protect not only your eyes, but your health in general. A. Visit the eye doctor annually B. Place reference materials properly C. This means your eyes are at greater risk of drying out D. Surrounding lights can reflect off your screen and tire your eyes E. It is suitable to keep a distance of at least one arm from the screen F. During this time, you should blink, close your eyes, and allow them to rest G. If you’re working in a brightly lit room, you can increase the brightness settings 【答案】16. E 17. B 18. C 19. G 20. Holding on to the straps (背带) of my school bag, I skipped out of the school gate with a wide smile. It was one of the best days of my life! I had scored an unbelievable 100 for my Mathematics test! 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: At that moment, I knew I had to make the right choice. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally, we arrived at the lady’s house. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: At that moment, I knew I had to make the right choice. Without hesitation, I dashed towards her and offered her my umbrella. “Grandma, let me share this umbrella with you,” I said. The lady gave me a weak smile of gratitude. I then sheltered her with the umbrella and helped her to carry some of her grocery bags. As we walked on, I asked the lady where she lived. “I live over there,” she replied, her wrinkly hands pointing in the direction we were heading to. While walking with the lady, I constantly thought of whether the game store had already closed. I wondered if helping the lady was really a good choice. Paragraph 2: Finally, we arrived at the lady’s house. The lady gave me a weak grin before thanking me repeatedly. “Thank you, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I would have been left helpless!” she exclaimed, shaking my hands over and over again. At that moment, I felt a surge of happiness and my heart soared with pride and joy. It finally dawned on me that helping others and being thoughtful was much more important than video games. It was a memory to treasure and remember for the rest of my life. 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲:dash/rush ②帮助:help/assist ③感觉到:feel/sense 情绪类 ①感谢:gratitude/appreciation ②喜悦:joy/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1] While walking with the lady, I constantly thought of whether the game store had already closed.
