When I saw Ronny for the first time, he looked like other kids in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as a Reading Mum. However, he usually arrived at school wearing old clothes.
On the day when it was Ronny’s turn to read, he sat very close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he tried to speak out “Bud the Sub”. It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his difficulty with the alphabet (字母).
The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress, but he was still below the level of the grade. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award (颁奖) ceremony. I had gifts and certificates (证书) for everyone. It took me a while to think about which Ronny fit; I believed the gift could cheer him up. I finally decided on “The Most Progressive Reader”. I showed his certificate and a book.
A few days later, I saw Ronny reading the book when I went back to the school. His teacher said, “He hasn’t put that book down. That’s the first book he’s ever owned.”
Fighting back tears (眼泪), I came near Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He nodded. And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more smoothly than I’d ever thought. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said, “Good book.”
At that moment, I knew I should do what an author (作家) had done—care children and make them excellent.

Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly while you are working, or when your best friend does not wait for you after school?
If you do, you need to take control (控制) of your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry with people can make you lose friends.
Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, has written My Feelings Are Just Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teenagers how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. Getting angry is not a natured (本性的) way to act. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily—all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.
When a baby falls over, it only cries if people are watching it. Like a baby, you should only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
The book gives many tips to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three:
★Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.
★Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.
★Do something different. When you get angry, walk away from the problem and somewhere else. Try to laugh!
43 The writer thinks that if you get angry easily you will ________.
A. lose your job B. get ill very easily C. lose weight easily D. lose your friends
44. Which tip in the book can help us to control anger?
A. To eat more snacks when angry.
B. To walk away from the problem and try to laugh.
C. To stay in the same place and think about the problem.
D. To tell your friends how angry you are all the time.
45. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. How to keep a record. B. How to keep cool when you get angry.
C. When to stop getting angry. D. How to use the book.

Have you ever wished that your life was like a reality (现实) TV show? Well, like it or not, things might be this way in the future.
This is because of Google glasses (谷歌眼镜), this kind of glasses is the latest technology (科技) from Google. They have more useful features than you could possibly imagine.
For one thing, people who wear the glasses can shoot videos and record the sounds around them. So if your friend is wearing Google glasses, he or she can record your every move and broadcast live on the Internet for the world to see. For another thing, there is a GPS system in the glasses. So if you get lost, you can say—OK, Glass, where am I? And it will find where you are and tell you where you need to go. Lastly, Google glasses are a bit like a helpful secretary (秘书). You can tell them what you want to write in an e-mail and they will type it for you.
Since April 16, Google glasses have been on the market in small numbers. And by the end of the year anyone will be able to buy a pair for about 2,500 yuan.
Some people are not sure whether Google glasses are cool or not. When someone is wearing Google glasses, it is not easy to see whether or not he is using them.
46. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. what Google glasses can do B. the designer of Google glasses

C. People don’t believe they can find Google glasses.
D. It’s hard to find whether someone is using Google glasses.

Have you watched the recent TV Three-Body? Changed by Liu Cixin’s science book The Three-Body Problem, the show is very popular with people. One of the most exciting parts must be Operation Guzheng.
In order to find the important information on a huge ship, people plan to cut it into pieces. They set up many thin strings (线) across the river, which are made by high technology. Looking like Guzheng, the strings quietly cut the steel ship into pieces as if the ship was soft tofu!
Is it possible to cut ships with thin strings in real life? In fact, strings are very good at cutting. For example, the egg cutting machine uses thin strings to cut eggs into pieces. A kite line can easily hurt people if it gets circle around their necks. This is because the thin strings have a very small contact area, leading to a high intensity of pressure (高强度的压力) when they cut things.
In the program, the strings are as thin as human hair. To cut the ship, the pressure needs to be 200 MPa. How strong is that pressure? Imagine an elephant standing on a string! In real life, scientists won’t be able to make such thin strings that wouldn’t easily break, at least for years to come. The cutting will also create lots of heat. We don’t have the things to bear (忍耐) that high temperature while it’s also thin enough to cut through. It’s still far away from the technology in the program.
50. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. The important information. B. The thin string.
C. The science book. D. The huge ship.
51. How does the writer tell us “strings are very good at cutting”?
A. By giving examples. B. By telling stories.
C By showing numbers. D. By telling rules.
52. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 want to tell us?
A. Cutting things creates lots of heat. B. People need strong pressure to cut ships.
C. Making thin strings is easy. D. People break strings with machines.

Many parents ask their children to do chores around the house. Mary, a mother of three children, never did that before. She always thought her children were too young to do chores. However, a TV show called Old Enough changed her.
It’s a popular reality show (真人秀) in Japan. The idea of the show is from a children’s picture book. The book describes a mother asking her five-year-old daughter to run to a store near their home to get some milk. The child is nervous about going alone but she finishes it successfully. The TV show has a similar story: children as young as two or three years old go out alone to run errands (跑腿) for their family. After watching the show, Mary decided to have a try. She then found a way on the Internet to make her children interested in the housework.
Mary used an app called You Rule Chores. It can make doing housework more like playing a game. Every time the children finish a chore, they can get a coin (硬币) on the app as a prize. The more chores they do, the more coins they can get. Then they can use the coins to watch their favorite movies or take a trip. Now, her children can do lots of chores themselves and they become more independent.

Fighting back tears (眼泪) I came near Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He nodded. And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more smoothly than I’d ever thought. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said, “Good book.”

A. The important information. B. The thin string.
C. The science book. D. The huge ship.
51. How does the writer tell us “strings are very good at cutting”?
