Get Closer to Nature
Autumn is a special time to enjoy the outdoors, when the weather is cool and refreshing for experiencing the sights and sounds of nature. Research shows that spending time in a natural setting has many benefits — it can help reduce anxiety and stress, improve concentration and attention, and even lead to better sleep. Here are some ways to get started.
Go for a walk, bike, or hike
The easiest way to get closer to nature is to simply step outside. Gather family or friends and go for a walk or bike ride in your neighborhood or a local park. Besides getting exercise, you’ll be stimulating (刺激) your senses, from seeing a variety of colors in autumn leaves to feeling a gentle wind blow through the trees.
Try bird-watching
November is a great time of year for bird-watching. It’s when many bird species take flight on their migratory (迁徙的) journeys to warm destinations to the south. You can visit a bird reserve in your area or learn more about the birds in your neighborhood. The highly-recommended Merlin Bird ID app is a free bird guide with photos, bird sounds, and maps that can help you identify the bird species you hear or see.
Plant a fall garden
Fall is a good time to plant because it’s less hot for plants but the soil is still warm. In parts of the US where the weather is milder, you may be able to plant leafy crops like spinach, broccoli, and kale through December. You can also bring nature inside by having plants in your home.
21. Why is it good to get closer to nature?
A. People can plant leafy crops. B. People can build new friendship.
C. People can improve their fitness. D. People can learn much about climate.
22. Which way is recommended for bird-watching?
A. Referring to maps. B. Turning to a bird guide.
C. Using an app for birds. D. Taking photos of birds.
23. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A course plan. B. A health magazine.
C. A travel brochure. D. A museum guidebook.
C 22. C 23. B

The Chinese New Year parade isn't the only place to watch a lion dance in. the San Francisco Bay Area. At weddings, grand openings of new businesses and other celebrations, the traditional Chinese art is performed year-round, thanks to the contributions of lion dance groups and young people increasingly embracing the activity.
Connie Lu, a senior at Lincoln High School in San Francisco, has been practicing lion dance for three years in a youth lion dance club. She performed as the lion's head at a high school competition during the weekend in San Francisco's Chinatown to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
“I officially started performing in my freshman year, but I had been a ’tail’ in a Chinese school for some years. I was only following the head’s steps,” Lu said. “I think being a head is more fun because you can play out the lion.”
Lu’s team — eleven girls and two boys — participated in the competition, along with four other teams of about 100 players. The event also attracted hundreds of tourists. Blinking big eyes and shaking the body, the yellow lion played by Lu and her teammates jumped up on a narrow bench to the beat of drums and gongs and picked up a hanging flower bouquet. The dancers’ skillful movements won a big round of applause from the audience.
Each performance has a unique meaning. Lu’s performance tells the story of a lion who tries to cross a river to get a flower for his friend, but he is afraid of the river at first. Finally, he conquers the challenge and gets the flower to his friend.
“The meaning is that everyone has struggles in life and it can be scary. But when we work together and work hard, we can achieve it,” said Sophia Lee, a teammate of Lu’s. “The practice of lion dancing serves as a way to celebrate our cultural heritage with audience abroad, giving them a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich Chinese traditions.”
24. What might be Lu’s favourite role in a lion dance?
A. The head. B. The tail. C. The body. D. The leg.
25. How many teams joined in the competition in total?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
26. What can we learn about Lu in the competition?
A. She was unfamiliar with a lion dance. B. Her role is still scary for her.
C. She gave up in the face of difficulty. D. Her performance tells a story of a brave lion.
27. What does Sophia Lee agree with about the lion dance?
A. It focuses on individual spirit. B. It's a chance to share Chinese culture.
C. It's hardly accepted abroad. D. It doesn't require a high level of skills.
A 25. D 26. D 27. B

Louise, who is a believer in “tough love”, made her 14-year-old son sleep outside in “freezing temperatures” without a sleeping bag to teach him a lesson, as she thinks it’s important that her kids know how to deal when things go wrong.
The single mum with a strict parenting technique has admitted some parents might disagree with her method, but that it’s her job to “equip them with the tools to deal when things go wrong”. So she’s “proud” that her children have the resilience to deal with life’s challenges.
The mum explained of one particular time when her son Michael, who was 14 at the time, forgot his sleeping bag at home after he was taken to scout camp — so she made him sleep outside in the freezing cold. Louise said, “Did I jump in the car and do the hour-long round trip to fetch it for him? No, I did not. I simply blew him a kiss and drove away. I was fully aware that he would spend the night shaking, with nothing but the tarpaulin (防水油布) of the tent protecting him from the bad weather. But I felt no guilt at all.” According to the mum, her son was old enough to take responsibility for this himself, and she believed he would benefit from the experience. Michael added that his mum is the only parent he knows that would let their kid sleep without a sleeping bag in “freezing temperatures”, but that he hasn’t forgotten an important piece of equipment since.
Another time, her younger son Christian had been off school ill, and by the weekend he was still feeling sore and achy, but she still made him “push through” and play in a match. When it comes to school, Louise didn’t want her children to receive any special treatment, so she asked the school not to give them praise for anything they hadn’t excelled in.
Louise says parents are too soft nowadays and thinks her parenting technique has made her children “share mutual respect and great communication as well as a lot of fun”.
28. Which can best replace the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 2?
A. Power. B. Chance. C. Habit. D. Patience.
29. What is Michael’s attitude towards his mother’s “tough love”?
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Disapproving. D. Positive.
30. How should parents educate their children in Louise’s view?
A. By recognizing what they have achieved. B. By allowing them to do what they like best.
C. By making them solve their challenges alone. D. By asking teachers to praise them often in school.
31. In which column of a newspaper can we read this text?
A. Real life. B. World news. C. Future life. D. Children’s stories.
A 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第三段“Michael added that his mum is the only parent he knows that would let their kid sleep without a sleeping bag in “freezing temperatures”, but that he hasn’t forgotten an important piece of equipment since.(迈克尔补充说,他的妈妈是他认识的唯一一个让孩子在“冰天雪地”不带睡袋睡觉的父母,但从那以后他就没有忘记一件重要的装备)”可知,迈克尔对母亲的“严厉的爱”是积极态度。故选D。

Speed reading has its benefits—it saves time where there is a lack of available hours or days, and the volume of pages is shocking. The problem generated by speed reading, though, can be summarized with the following quote from the witty (诙谐的) director Woody Allen: “This is how I read War and Peace. It was about Russia.” A remarkable summary for a 1200-page book.
I prefer discussing the “way of reading” and not only the speed. Does a slow pace guarantee quality of reading? You can do a very short exercise—which books have you read, let’s say, two years ago? What were they about? Can you recall five ideas from each of them? In most cases, the answer is “No”. So, what difference does it make if we read fast or slow?
In today’s busy times, I suggest “Mindful Reading”, which includes two simple principles. The first is, of course, being mindful. The speed of reading is precisely matched to the speed of awareness. I read to realise. I realise to comprehend. I comprehend to make use of. It obliges (迫使) me to slow down when I don’t grasp the idea behind the words and to go back over and over to one and the same sentence. And thus, poetry requires a slow pace, time for an internal “echo” of rhyme in the soul for appreciating the beauty of the words while the novel allows for a higher speed in order for us to enjoy the plot. But all types of speed have one thing in common: mindfulness.
And the other principle: Post Lectio—Ratiocination. If we read for 60 minutes, and after closing the book, immediately go and do something else, we are missing a key element—thinking over the content while we still remember it, something like a mental digestion. Whoever is not used to this can try at least59/1 compared to 60/0: one minute to think and assimilate. Better, try five, or even better, ten minutes, or why not 30/30 minutes? With this mental exercise, we will not only remember ideas from books read, but we will gain a much bigger benefit from their content.
I hope you did not read this article too fast.
32. Why is Woody Allen quoted in paragraph 1?
A. To show the efficiency of reading fast.
B. To illustrate the problem of speed reading.
C. To prove the director’s ability to summarize.
D. To stress the importance of reading classics.
33. What may the writer agree with about the speed of reading?
A. Fast reading ensures reading quality.
B. Fast reading is superior to slow reading.
C. Slow reading is no guarantee of reading quality.
D. Slow reading prevents us remembering the content.
34. What does the first principle of “Mindful Reading” involve?
A Deep engagement. B. Quick comprehension.
C. Excellent memory. D. Wild imagination.
35. What does the author suggest readers do according to paragraph 4?
A. Take breaks to refresh their mind. B. Read mindfully without interruptions.
C Devote time to reflecting after reading. D. Digest information while reading.
B 33. C 34. A 35. C
根据第一段的“The problem generated by speed reading, though, can be summarized with the following quote from the witty (诙谐的) director Woody Allen: “This is how I read War and Peace. It was about Russia.” A remarkable summary for a 1200-page book.
根据第二段“Does a slow pace guarantee quality of reading? You can do a very short exercise—which books have you read, let’s say, two years ago? What were they about? So, what difference does it make if we read fast or slow?”(慢节奏能保证阅读的质量吗?
根据第三段的“The speed of reading is precisely matched to the speed of awareness. I read to realise. I realise to comprehend. I comprehend to make use of. It obliges (迫使) me to slow down when I don’t grasp the idea behind the words and to go back over and over to one and the same sentence. (阅读的速度与意识的速度精确匹配。我读书是为了意识到。我意识到要理解。我理解了才能利用。当我无法理解文字背后的意思时,我不得不放慢脚步,一遍又一遍地回到同一个句子。) ”,可知,“正念阅读”的第一个原则是深入参与。故选A。
根据第四段的“If we read for 60 minutes, and after closing the book, immediately go and do something else, we are missing a key element—thinking over the content while we still remember it, something like a mental digestion. (如果我们读了60分钟,然后合上书,马上去做别的事情,我们就错过了一个关键因素——在我们还记得的时候思考内容,就像精神消化一样。不习惯这一点的人可以尝试至少59/1,而不是60/0:1分钟思考和吸收。最好是五分钟,或者更好,十分钟,或者为什么不30/30分钟?通过这种思维练习,我们不仅能记住读过的书中的观点,还能从书的内容中获得更大的好处。)”可推断,作者建议读者阅读后思考。故选C。

I hated writing in the process of growing up. But I couldn’t avoid it. Learning English was a must in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganized thoughts into fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers would return my papers littered with red. I was frustrated all the time. ____36____ And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
_____37_____ I liked the objective truths that could be found if I searched properly. In college, I joined a research lab to enhance conductor efficiency, and after a year of hard work, we developed a design effortlessly. However, the joy was short-lived as I had to write a research paper about our findings.
I knew that if I wanted to become an academic, I would need to spend time penning papers. But with my awful track record with writing, I was scared of failing. In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. ____38____
Before I could give up in defeat, though, the graduate student explained those red marks didn’t mean I was a bad writer. _____39_____ It requires revising your work, often several times. I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. I had buried a few key takeaways, and the introduction was missing important context. But with help, I finally made it.
From then on, writing became one of my favorite parts of research. ____40____ But I came around. All it took was some trial and error.
A. “Not again,” I screamed inside.
B. I should view it in a positive way.
C. Maybe I wasn’t born to write.
D. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing.
E. I soon realized writing was my strength.
F. I switched to the world of math and science.
G. I had never imagined it in my wildest dreams.
C 37. F 38. A 39. D 40. G

“be believed to do sth.” 故填to represent。
“During the Tang Dynasty”表明句子时态为一般过去时,主语 “the peony”和“consider”之间是被动关系,即“牡丹被认为”,所以要用一般过去时的被动语态 “was/were + 过去分词”,主语是单数概念,故用 was considered。故填was considered。
故填who。
故填a。
be admired as... 故填as。
“Over centuries” 表示“几个世纪以来”,是现在完成时的时间标志词,强调从过去持续到现在的动作或状态,主语 their rich history, deep symbolism, and aesthetic beauty是复数,所以用现在完成时“have + 过去分词”,即“have made”。故填have made。

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party. They decided to throw a horse-themed party because Madison liked horses so much. She had a horse named Star and she loved to talk about it at school.
“I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert!” Madison said abruptly.
“We already discussed this. You are inviting all the girls from your class.”
“But I don’t like Lucy Gilbert!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. How would you feel if every girl in your class was invited to a party but you?” Dad tried to talk some sense into her. “Come on, Madison. Lucy is a new girl in class. They just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone.”
Madison felt annoyed at her father’s insistence on inviting Lucy. She thought about Lucy always sitting in the corner all by herself, not talking to anyone and braiding (编织) something.
Saturday morning, Madison and her parents were blowing up balloons and getting everything ready for the party. A few hours later, most of the girls were at the party, but she didn’t see Lucy. How she wished that Lucy wasn’t coming! She was afraid she’s going to ruin everything.
Just at that moment, Lucy arrived in a faded dress. Dad gave Madison a gentle push on the back and asked her to give Lucy a warm welcome. Madison did as told unwillingly and turned back to other girls in a few seconds. Lucy placed her present on the table. She looked around the room for a moment and then walked to a chair in the corner and sat down by herself.
“See! I told you!” Madison said to her dad with a satisfied smile.
Later, all the girls were gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Moved by Lucy’s efforts at the present, Madison suddenly felt so bad.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Madison picked up the present and ripped open the giftwrap paper. Inside lay a hand-braided blue-and-white lead rope. It really was beautiful. It was, by far, her very favorite birthday present of the day. “I made it myself for your horse because I heard you talk about it at school. Hope you will like it,” Lucy explained softly, her fingers nervously tracing the braids. Her voice trembled as she revealed she’d stayed up past midnight for three weeks, practicing different braiding techniques until every loop met her standards. It occurred to Madison that this quiet girl had poured more heart into her present than all others combined.
Moved by Lucy’s efforts at the present, Madison suddenly felt so bad. She didn’t imagine the girl she hated would put so much thought in making her a wonderful present. She thanked Lucy sincerely and apologized for her earlier rudeness. “I’m sorry, Lucy. I like the present very much. It’s the prettiest one I’ve ever seen.” Lucy smiled. Madison put her arm around Lucy’s shoulders and introduced her to the other girls, who happily shared the birthday cake together. Later, Lucy taught the girls her braiding tricks, her chair no longer lonely. When Dad snapped a photo of them feeding Star apples, Madison realized kindness, like Lucy’s threads, could weave unexpected friendships.

32 Why is Woody Allen quoted in paragraph 1?
A. Deep engagement. B. Quick comprehension.
C. Excellent memory. D. Wild imagination.
35. What does the author suggest readers do according to paragraph 4?
A Take breaks to refresh their mind. B. Read mindfully without interruptions.
C. Devote time to reflecting after reading. D. Digest information while reading.

B I should view it in a positive way.
C. Maybe I wasn’t born to write.
D. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing.
E. I soon realized writing was my strength.
F. I switched to the world of math and science.
G. I had never imagined it in my wildest dreams.
