三、阅读理解。
On a bright Friday afternoon in spring, Laura Peterson had every reason to enjoy walking on the streets. She had moved to the city nine months before. “When the weather is good, it’s very hard to find a reason to be unhappy with the city.” she said.
Yet she lived in the city during a season of darkness in politics and acts of terrorism around the world. “One day you laugh, and then you are angry,” said Laura.
As she walked toward the subway station, she thought, “Please, God, I want to see something nice.”
At the City Hall station, she sat on a bench. It was just after 2:00 pm. A man stood next to a pillar, waiting for the train. There was an announcement that the next train was two stations away. Then Laura saw the man at the pillar falling forward onto the tracks(铁轨).
Two gentlemen ran over, looked and jumped onto the tracks. They tried to wake him up but failed. The man was not moving. Two more men jumped down to help.
“I don’t know where these men got the wisdom and the quickness,” Laura said. “The man who fell was about six feet tall, a heavy man. He seemed to be stuck in the tracks and hard to move away. It was worrying to know that the train was coming. Will it stop? Will they succeed pulling him out?”
On the tracks, the man was lifted from below to others who rolled him onto the platform. Then the rescuers(救援者) were themselves rescued, pulled back to safety by helping hands. As soon as they were all clear, the train pulled in. People getting off the train walked around this man and left quickly without much attention paid to him.
The man was taken to a local hospital, and fortunately he was not seriously injured.
One of the men who went onto the tracks, David Tirado, told gothamist.com that he had visited the injured man the next day, who had no memory of even being in the subway.
“This city of millions is full of people who are there for others,” Laura said. “Without even knowing the person. It was beautiful to see.”
( ) 1. When Laura entered the subway station, she ______.
A. was angry at the political darkness
B. was excited about the good weather
C. was anxious about missing her train
D. was expecting to see something pleasant
( ) 2. Which of the following statements about the rescue is TRUE?
A. The train was stopped two stations away.
B. The rescued man jumped onto the tracks.
C. The rescued man had no idea what had happened in the rescue.
D. The rescuers quickly climbed back to the platform by themselves.
( )3. We can infer from the text that ______.
A. David Tirado was the first to rescue the man
B. more than four people joined in the rescue efforts
C. passengers from the train offered help to the rescued man
D. there were serious safety problems at the City Hall station
( ) 4. What was Laura’s attitude toward the successful rescue?
