On a rainy afternoon in a small town, a young deliveryman named Alex was making his rounds. Alex had just started this job a few weeks ago and was still learning the ropes. Today, his task was to deliver a precious package to an old mansion on the outskirts of the town.
As he drove along the slippery roads, the rain became heavier, making visibility almost zero. His GPS started malfunctioning, and he realized he had taken a wrong turn. By the time he corrected his route, he was running late.
When Alex finally reached the mansion, he rushed to the front door, package in hand. An elderly man, Mr. Thompson, opened the door. Alex apologized profusely for the delay, but Mr. Thompson just smiled kindly and invited him in to dry off for a while.
While waiting for the rain to case up, Alex noticed some old photographs on the wall. Mr. Thompson saw his interest and started sharing stories about his family. He talked about his son who lived far away and how he was eagerly waiting for the package, which contained important family heirlooms.
Suddenly, Alex realized that there was a problem. In his hurry, he had mixed up the labels on two packages. The one he had delivered to Mr. Thompson was not the right one. Panic filled his heart, but he quickly explained the situation to Mr. Thompson.
Instead of getting angry, Mr. Thompson remained calm. He told Alex that mistakes happen and that they should figure out a solution together. They called the delivery company, and Alex offered to drive back immediately to exchange the packages, even though the rain was still pouring.
With the help of the company’s new GPS guidance, Alex managed to find the correct address. He swapped the packages and rushed back to the mansion. When he finally handed over the right package to Mr. Thompson, the old man’s eyes filled with joy.
Mr. Thompson was so grateful that he wrote a letter of praise to Alex’s company. Because of his honesty and determination to fix the mistake, Alex not only kept his job but also received a bonus. This experience taught Alex that honesty and responsibility are the keys to success, no matter how difficult the situation may seem.
4. Which of the following best describes Alex’s initial reaction when he realized he had delivered the wrong package?
A. He tried to cover up his mistake.
B. He was calm and thought of a solution right away.

D. He blamed the company’s GPS for the error.
5. What can be inferred from Mr. Thompson’s reaction to Alex’s mistake?
A. Mr. Thompson had a habit of overlooking others’ errors.
B. Mr. Thompson understood that everyone could make mistakes.
C. Mr. Thompson was too old to be angry about such things.
D. Mr. Thompson didn’t care much about the package.
6. The author uses the phrase “learning the ropes” in the first paragraph mainly to show that ______.
A. Alex was an experienced deliveryman. B. Alex was eager to learn new skills.
C. Alex had a lot of ropes to deliver. D. Alex was struggling with the new job.
7. What does the story imply about success in one’s job?
A. Success is mainly determined by luck and external factors.
B. Only by avoiding mistakes can one achieve success.
C. Having good communication skills is the key to success.
D. Honesty and the willingness to correct mistakes are crucial for success.
C
It’s very common for students’ grades to experience a decline upon entering high school. Different teenagers deal with the newfound pressures differently, and while some tend to rise to the challenge, others can become overwhelmed (不知所措的) by stress. An interesting study conducted at The University of Texas has found that students’ views on learning and intelligence mindsets can make all the difference when it comes to fighting academic stress.
The research team set out to learn why some students overcame the stressful transition (过渡) into high school and some struggled to maintain their academic skills and standards. Their findings pointed to a direct relationship between a student’s learning mindset and their stress resilience, especially when grades begin to decline. More specifically, students’ learning mindsets were defined as whether they considered intelligence a fixed characteristic that everyone is born with, or a constantly growing one that can be improved over time.
In all 499 ninth-graders from two public high schools in Texas were surveyed during their first term. Researchers assessed each student’s perceptions of intelligence, and asked each participant to fill out daily surveys on their academic stress levels. The results showed that 68% of students saw a decline in their grades during the first 12 weeks of high school. Those worsening grades, however, didn’t cause a higher stress response for everyone.
It turned out that worsening grades only caused greater stress responses in students who showed signs of a fixed intelligence mindset, while students with a growth mindset were able to bounce back much more quickly. Researchers theorize this is because these students are more active in solving academic issues, for example, by clarifying lessons with teachers after class if they don’t understand a particular topic.
“Declining grades may get ‘under the skin’ for high school students,” explains lead author Hae Yeon Lee. “But believing that intelligence can be developed or having what is called a growth mindset can reduce the effects of academic stress.”
8. What does the underlined word “resilience” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. The feeling of being stressed. B. The state of being very intelligent.
C. The process of learning new things. D. The ability to recover from difficulties.
9. How did the researcher conduct the study?
A. By observational study in classroom settings. B. By experimental study with controlled variables.
C. By survey-based study with daily assessments. D. By case study focusing on individual students.
10. What can be inferred about students with a fixed intelligence mindset?
A. They are more likely to seek help from teachers.
B. They are less likely to experience academic stress.
C. They tend to give up easily when facing challenges.
D They are more likely to improve their grades quickly.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. The Common Phenomenon of Grades Decline in High School
B. Ways to Improve High School Students’ Academic Performance
C. Fixed Intelligence: The Root of Worsening Grades for Students
D. Growth Mindset: A Key to Handling Academic Stress in High School
D
Measles(麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗). But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year.
The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work.
But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in. When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger.
That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year.
The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.
Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免) sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine.
Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions.
Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks.
12. The first two paragraphs suggest that ____________.
A. a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trend
B. the outbreak of measles attracts the public attention
C. anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasons
D. information about measles spreads quickly
13. Herd immunity works well when ____________.
A. exemptions are allowed
B. several vaccines are used together
C. the whole neighborhood is involved in
D. new regulations are added to the state laws
14. What is the main reason for the comeback of measles?
A. The overuse of vaccine.
B. The lack of medical care.
C. The features of measles itself.
D. The vaccine opt-outs of some people.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the idea of exemption.
B. To discuss methods to cure measles.
C. To stress the importance of vaccination.
D. To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.

Are you thinking about holidaying alone, but a bit concerned about the dangers? You needn’t worry if you consider these tips first.
1. Safety
Unless you positively invite danger — i.e. wandering around a dark park at 3 a.m. with headphones on — travelling alone isn’t actually that risky. ___16___ In the case of taking taxis, always keep a record of the plate number and ask for an estimated fare before setting off. You should also carry your ID card with you and always keep a back-up. And most importantly, ensure that someone else knows your route and keep in regular contact with them.
2. Plan
Being alone means you can’t use your partner’s phone when yours runs out of juice, or rely on them should you lose your wallet. ___17___ It’s a good idea to write down some key numbers of friends, hotels and emergency services beforehand, and keep some back-up money in your bag, just in case.
3. Eating
Many single travelers have a fear of eating alone. ___18___ You can bring a book to avoid boredom sit at counters to be less noticeable or use the opportunity to practice your foreign language on a waiter.
4. Making friends
___19___ This is another common concern when travelling alone. In fact, acquiring new companions (伙伴) is easier than feared. You can smile at people, have open body language, read something interesting to start conversation, or ask strangers a question. All these help you look approachable. More hands-on tips include visiting bars, joining tours or using apps designed to help people make friends.
5. Enjoy it
Without having to consider others’ needs, the joy of solo travel is that you can be entirely selfish: walk at your preferred pace, eat what and when you want, and go wherever you like to see the sights that interest you. ___20___.
A. What if no one likes me on my trip?
B. The biggest danger is being taken for a ride.
C. It’s actually not so hard to get over your worry.
D. You needn’t get into a panic if this really happens.
E. However well you plan in advance, things will go wrong.
F. Just appreciate your independence and enjoy that freedom.
G. So put emergency systems in place before starting your trip.

I love parties. I love planning for them, making the invitations, planning the games and decorating my own cake. The only thing that I don't like is deciding on the guest list. When 1 was in grade school my mom would tell me the maximum number of friends that I could invite and it was always a number too small for my list.
I also liked all different kinds of people. I never quite fit into one of the many little groups at my school, so I just kind of floated around, accumulating friends from various backgrounds. There was an “in" crowd made up of the cool kids who had the power to rule the school-if a cool kid wore two different colored socks to school one day, everyone thought it was great. But if an uncool kid did the same thing, the other kids would turn away in disgust (厌恶).It made getting dressed in the morning a very scary thing.
Shannon was one of my friends who seemed to unknowingly break the rules of uncoolness" all the time. I don't know why she was targeted, but people found it acceptable to make fun of her. Shannon was a nice girl and wore pretty clothes, but was somewhat overweight and didn't talk much. She was picked on a lot. Whenever there was an strange noise or smell in the classroom the kids would giggle (咯咯笑)and point at her. Shannon never said anything, but it made me feel sick inside. Shannon was innocent, I thought.
One year, to celebrate my birthday, my mom told me I could have a party at our house. I struggled for days deciding on which girls to invite. Once I had chosen all the names, I made the invitations and handed them out to my friends at school.
“Why did you invite her?” asked one of my cool friends when it was discovered that I had invited Shannon. She pressured me to tell her not to come. There were other people I could add in her place who would be more acceptable.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1 :
Unsure what to do, I was put in a, difficult situation.

Paragraph 2 :
Weeks later, Shannon suddenly called to thank me for inviting her to the party.

In all, 499 ninth-graders from two public high schools in Texas were surveyed during their first term.
D. They are more likely to improve their grades quickly.
D 9. C 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“It’s very common for students’ grades to experience a decline upon entering high school. Different teenagers deal with the newfound pressures differently, and while some tend to rise to the challenge, others can become overwhelmed (不知所措的) by stress. An interesting study conducted at The University of Texas has found that students’ views on learning and intelligence mindsets can make all the difference when it comes to fighting academic stress.(进入高中后,学生的成绩下降是很常见的。
根据第三段“In all, 499 ninth-graders from two public high schools in Texas were surveyed during their first term. Researchers assessed each student’s perceptions of intelligence, and asked each participant to fill out daily surveys on their academic stress levels.(来自德克萨斯州两所公立高中的499名九年级学生在第一学期接受了调查。研究人员评估了每个学生对智力的看法,并要求每个参与者填写关于他们学业压力水平的每日调查)”可知,研究是基于调查的,并涉及每日评估。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“It turned out that worsening grades only caused greater stress responses in students who showed signs of a fixed intelligence mindset, while students with a growth mindset were able to bounce back much more quickly.(结果表明,成绩下降只会让表现出固定智力思维模式的学生产生更大的压力反应,而拥有成长型思维模式的学生则能够更快地恢复过来)”可推知,具有固定智力思维模式的学生可能在面对学术挑战时更加挣扎,并且更容易放弃。
结合最后一句“But believing that intelligence can be developed or having what is called a growth mindset can reduce the effects of academic stress.(但相信智力是可以发展的,或者拥有所谓的成长型心态,可以减少学业压力的影响)”总结归纳文章中心:成长型思维是应对高中学业压力的关键。
Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine.

___18___ You can bring a book to avoid boredom, sit at counters to be less noticeable or use the opportunity to practice your foreign language on a waiter.
5 Enjoy it
Without having to consider others’ needs, the joy of solo travel is that you can be entirely selfish: walk at your preferred pace, eat what and when you want, and go wherever you like to see the sights that interest you. ___20___.
B 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. F
根据上文“Unless you positively invite danger — i.e. wandering around a dark park at 3 a.m. with headphones on — travelling alone isn’t actually that risky.(除非你确实是自找麻烦——比如凌晨3点戴着耳机在黑暗的公园里闲逛——独自旅行其实并没有那么危险)”以及后文“In the case of taking taxis, always keep a record of the plate number and ask for an estimated fare before setting off. You should also carry your ID card with you and always keep a back-up. And most importantly, ensure that someone else knows your route and keep in regular contact with them.(在乘坐的士时,一定要记录车牌号码,并在出发前索要估计车费。你亦应随身携带身份证,并备存身份证。最重要的是,确保别人知道你的路线,并与他们保持定期联系)”可知,本段主要说明的是个人安全问题,上文提到独自旅行并没有那么危险,可知本句应当是在说明真正的危险是什么,故B选项“最大的危险是坐车被人骗了”符合语境,故选B。
【17题详解】
根据后文“It’s a good idea to write down some key numbers of friends, hotels and emergency services beforehand, and keep some back-up money in your bag, just in case.(事先记下一些重要的朋友、酒店和应急服务机构的电话号码,并在包里备一些钱以防万一,这是个好主意)”可知,后文提到了旅行前一些以防万一的措施,可知是在出发前就要做好紧急措施,G选项中emergency对应后文中emergency。
根据上文“Many single travelers have a fear of eating alone.(许多单身旅行者都害怕一个人吃饭)”以及后文“You can bring a book to avoid boredom, sit at counters to be less noticeable or use the opportunity to practice your foreign language on a waiter.(你可以带本书来排解无聊,坐在柜台前让别人注意不到你,或者利用这个机会向服务员练习外语)”可知,上文提到害怕一个人吃饭,后文则提出了解决办法,可知要克服一个人吃饭的忧虑并不困难。
根据后文“This is another common concern when travelling alone. In fact, acquiring new companions (伙伴) is easier than feared. You can smile at people, have open body language, read something interesting to start conversation, or ask strangers a question. All these help you look approachable. More hands-on tips include visiting bars, joining tours or using apps designed to help people make friends.(这是独自旅行时另一个常见的问题。
根据小标题“Enjoy it(享受它)”以及上文“Without having to consider others’ needs, the joy of solo travel is that you can be entirely selfish: walk at your preferred pace, eat what and when you want, and go wherever you like to see the sights that interest you.(不用考虑别人的需要,独自旅行的乐趣在于你可以完全自私:以你喜欢的步调行走,想吃什么就吃什么,去任何你想去的地方,去你感兴趣的景点)”可知,本段的建议是享受独自旅行,F选项中enjoy对应小标题中enjoy。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Unsure what to do, I was put in a difficult situation. I liked Shannon, yet I was afraid that I would become the target of the children’s ridicule if I insisted on inviting Shannon to my party. I knew the right thing to do, but I struggled with the fear of having to live with my decision. Finally, my consciousness took over. I decided not to say anything to Shannon and let the invitations stay as written, despite the fact that I was worried about what would happen. Luckily, the party worked out well, with all of us having fun together.
Paragraph 2:
Weeks later, Shannon suddenly called to thank me for inviting her to the party. She said my invitation brightened her days. Shannon cherished the memory of that birthday party. It was important to her that I had welcomed her into the fun, and it was a day when she felt accepted and part of a group. She talked about the games we played and the cake we ate, remembering all the details. For me, it was just a simple party. But for Shannon, it was a signal of acceptance.
