Our school is going to add different kinds of labour courses (劳动课程). The courses which will start from next Wednesday can help you get some practical skills.
Enjoying a Good Meal
Do you want to be a good cook? If you are interested in cooking, here is a chance. You needn’t bring any materials to the classroom. The only condition is that you should be free from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Thursday.
Becoming a Master in Cleaning
You must have experienced such a situation: you want to do the housework but you find it tiring and hard. Every Wednesday, a two-hour course will totally change it. You will learn some valuable ways that help you do the cleaning. Miss Rome, a master in cleaning, waits for you at 3:00 p.m.
Planting Your Hope
This course is special because teachers show you skills out of classrooms. Students will plant flowers, vegetables and some trees with teachers’ help. If the weather allows, you can take the course every day between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. from September 20 to October 31.
Experiencing Farm Life

I can never talk without stuttering (口吃). Today I was taking over my friend Rat’s paper job, dropping papers at neighbours’ front doors and collecting payments for the next week’s service, as he was on vacation with his parents.
The first five houses on my list were easy. The envelopes (信封) were right there — in the screen door or on the mailbox, so I didn’t have to say a word to anyone. But the sixth house at 1219 Vinton was my first doorbell. I had never before in my life walked up to the front door to call a stranger.
I heard the bell through the screen door, and the sound made my insides jump. Soon a man in a white shirt started toward the door and then stopped when he saw me.
“I think it’s the paperboy, honey. Where’s the envelope?”
A woman’s voice from the kitchen said she’d forgotten how much it was.
The man walked to the screen door, “How much, son?”
I knew exactly how much. Ninety-five cents. But the word “ninety” was as difficult for me to say as any word starting with P. I was thinking about saying Sixty cents because of the easy S sound on both words, but I would be losing money if I did that. I also thought about rounding it off by saying one dollar, but people might think I was dishonest.
Then I tried a trick that sometimes worked at school. I threw my pencil in the air with my right hand. The moment it spun, the words left my mouth, “s-s-s-Ninety-five cents.” But as usual, I got nervous and it dropped onto the ground.
The man opened the screen door and handed me a dollar bill. I took out a coin from my pocket and offered it to him.
“Keep it, son,” he said, then turned away.
My first doorbell had gone better than expected. I’d even gotten my first tip. And now I had four more houses to go and I felt a little more confident. Maybe this collecting job would be a bit easier later.
4. How many houses in total did the boy need to visit that day?
A. Five. B. Six. C. Nine. D. Ten.
5. Why did the boy find it difficult to say “Ninety-five cents”?
A. Because he forgot the exact price.
B. Because he had trouble with the first sound.
C. Because he was too nervous and shy to speak.
D. Because he wanted to ask for more money for the service.
6. Which of the following shows the boy’s feelings during the paper job?
A. easy→worried→scared→excited
B. nervous→calm→relaxed→hopeful
C. nervous→scared→confident→proud
D. easy→nervous→surprised→confident
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the story?
A. My First Doorbell B. A Kind Neighbour
C. My Favourite Job D. A Five-cent Tip
C
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), I was used to straddling (横跨) two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side lost ground, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin. I felt that they should be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother met.
Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball,” “eat,” “sleep,” “play.” However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more obvious (明显的). One morning, when my daughter asked, “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries of my knowledge?
Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — is a much-needed tool for parents like me.
The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked (贮藏量多的) Chinese section. The tale of the Monkey King soon caught my daughter’s imagination.
When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “Thoughts on a Silent Night” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder fell on my father’s face as he listened to the familiar poem from the mouth of his grandson: the poem that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that.

A. Happy. B. Anxious.
C. Excited. D. Surprised.
10. How did the author feel when she realized that her children were very interested in Chinese culture?

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
In the 1970s, when I was a new teacher at a school in Detroit, I was arranged to teach a particularly talented class. The students included a little girl named Mary Kay, who had spent only one year at our school — the year that I had her in my third-grade class.
Her father was Billy Kim, a quite famous man. He was from South Korea. His daughter Mary Kay could speak beautiful English, and loved smiling. She had great respect for learning and never made trouble in class.
In one class, I asked Mary Kay to read an article in our book out loud. To my surprise, although Mary Kay could speak beautiful, flowing English, she was poor in reading. She even mispronounced many words. Immediately, the kids in the class laughed at her.
Then I said to Mary Kay, “Why don’t you go and write some words in your native language on the blackboard for everyone?” Mary Kay’s eyes suddenly brightened, and she walked with a smile to the board, full of new-found confidence.
The other children watched as she wrote word after word along with her name in her native language. The whole class immediately watched with a bit of respect and amazement, not pity. Then one of the students said, “Write my name Mary Kay.” And she did. Then more students asked. Soon, the whole class had their names on the board, and Mary Kay became a heroine. She could do something the others could not. She went from feeling inadequate (能力不足的) to feeling proud. In the following days, I still often encouraged Mary Kay.
After Mary Kay finished her third grade, I had never met her and lost contact with her. About 30 years later, I happened to meet with her father in a local church. And I decided to ask him about Mary Kay, so I introduced myself first.
Paragraph 1: I said, “Hello, Mr. Kim. I’m Sophia brown.”

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1: I said, “Hello, Mr. Kim. I’m Sophia Brown.” “I was your daughter’s third-grade teacher when your family was living in Detroit. Do you remember me?” I added. All of a sudden, his eyes were filled with surprise, looking at me. Then he said excitedly, “Yes. Mrs. Brown. Mary Kay has been looking for you for thirty years!” Then he sent my phone number to Mary. Not long afterward, my phone rang. It was Mary Kay who had become a grown woman and also a teacher. I was so glad that we contacted each other again.
Paragraph 2: She told me how much my class had influenced her life. It increased her confidence in herself, and most importantly, it led to her later determination to influence her students as I did on her. Not long after that talk, Mary went to further study at Harvard University and became a professor. She continued to influence lives for decades to follow. I had never thought one action mattered so much. Meanwhile, I was so glad that she kept encouraging and supporting her students who might face what she had faced. I was proud of her.
