A fat leopard (豹) at Panzhihua Park Zoo in Sichuan Province once became famous online because of its weight. Now it is under the spotlight because it has failed to lose weight even though the zoo has tried its best. Many people said that the result reminded them of their own weight loss efforts.
The leopard became famous online in March 2024 when videos posted by visitors, showing it lying in the sun, got really popular, as its fat appearance looked like the animated character Officer Clawhauser, an overweight leopard from the movie Zootopia.
The zoo was praised by many people for being the “kindest zoo”, but some were worried that the leopard being too heavy might make it sick, and suggestions were made for the zoo to help it lose weight.
Workers in the zoo said they developed a special weight loss program for the leopard after receiving the suggestions, including changing the leopard’s diet and feeding methods, and expanding (扩大) its living space to 45 square meters.
However, two months after the work of the weight loss program, visitors and reporters visiting the zoo found that the leopard’s belly still appeared round and fat, showing no effect on its weight loss.
Liu Maojun, one of the zoo workers, said that the zoo asked many experts (专家) on how to help the leopard lose weight. “They all said that it was not necessary (必要的) to push the leopard to lose weight and that it should just enjoy its old age in peace. The leopard is between 16 and 17 years old which is like a human being who is 70 or 80 years old. It is fed 1.75 kilos of beef every day, but sometimes it eats rabbit or chicken instead,” he said.
( ) 16. Why does the leopard become famous again?
A. It makes a lot of people want to lose weight.
B. Its appearance and facial expressions are cute.

D. Its weight loss effort wasn’t successful at all.
( ) 17. What were many people worried about according to Paragraph 3?

A. They stopped feeding it.
B. They changed its menu.
C. They weighed it every day.
D. They made its playtime longer.
( ) 19. What did experts think of the leopard’s weight loss?
A. Cruel. B. Interesting.
C. Unnecessary. D. Successful.
( ) 20. Why did the writer write this passage?
A. To show the difficulties of helping an overweight animal.
B. To say the scientific reasons behind a leopard’s weight gain.
C. To describe a leopard’s popularity and its weight loss journey.

Australian scientists have come up with a clever way to learn new information about sea lions and the seafloor (海底).
Australian sea lions are endangered. Scientists wanted to learn more about how sea lions use different areas of the seafloor to collect food. However, studying the seafloor is difficult. Underwater robots are expensive. They often move slowly and they can’t go everywhere. So scientists came up with a good idea — attaching cameras to sea lions. The sea lions could cover large areas of the seafloor quickly, and go deep into places that humans can’t reach.
The scientists chose 8 healthy adult female (雌性) sea lions. ________ That meant the scientists could easily get the cameras back. The scientists put the sea lions to sleep and attached a lightweight camera and GPS tracker (追踪器) to each of them.
The results were exciting. The videos recorded the seafloor in places that had never been seen before. The scientists were able to identify 6 different types of seafloor environments.
Using AI and the information from the videos, the scientists developed a special tool. The tool can “guess” what the seafloor is like. And it’s correct 98% of the time. The scientists now can use that tool to make good predictions (预言) about what the seafloor is like, even in areas that haven’t been studied.
Thanks to the sea lions, the scientists now have a better idea about the kinds of areas used by these endangered animals and where these areas can be found. A researcher said, “They give us a window into their world that we haven’t seen before.”
( ) 21. Why do the scientists use sea lions to study the seafloor?
① Sea lions can go into deep places.
② Sea lions can cover the seafloor quickly.
③ There are plenty of sea lions in Australia.
④ Scientists want to train sea lions to become underwater researchers.
A. ②④ B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ①②
( ) 22. Which of the following can we put into the blank?
A. They were allowed to swim freely.
B. They were taught to dive deeply.
C. Scientists didn’t think female sea lions could do better than males.
D. They chose females because they would soon return to land to feed their young.
( ) 23. What can the special tool mentioned in Paragraph 5 do?
A. It can track the sea lions and know where they are.
B. It can help scientists predict what the seafloor is like.
C. It can help researchers get the cameras back more easily.
D. It can bring people to the seafloor that they haven’t been to.
( ) 24. What does the underlined word “They” refer to?
A. The sea lions. B. The scientists.
C. The underwater robots. D. The lightweight cameras.
( ) 25. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Science Changes the Way We Live
B. The Best Way to Protect the Seafloor
C. Sea Lions Help Map the Seafloor
D. Sea Lions — Humans’ Best Friend

Dear John,
I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in the conservation of giant pandas. I’d like to tell you what China has done to protect them.
First, China has set up many nature reserves to protect pandas and their habitats. These reserves provide a safe place for pandas to live and reproduce. Second, the government has made laws to stop people from hunting pandas. Anyone who breaks the laws will be punished. Third, China has worked on breeding programs to help pandas have more babies. Scientists study their habits to improve breeding success. Finally, China has shared panda conservation experience with other countries to protect this endangered species together.
Thanks to these efforts, the number of pandas is increasing, and they are no longer endangered. I’m proud of China’s work in protecting pandas!
Yours,
Li Hua
